The Drug Enforcement Agency this week said that there are no accepted medical uses for marijuana, leaving it on the list of dangerous drugs like heroin. The scientific community continues to find proof of wide-spread anecdotal reports about the medical value of marijuana. A recent report describes a mechanism that explains how marijuana might improve the appetite of chemo patients. This, along with pain reduction in glaucoma and multiple sclerosis, is one of the most common medical uses for marijuana.
The New York Times reports on a study [link is to abstract; the paper will be published later] by researchers at the University of California Irvine and the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa. The abstract tells us that the scientists were studying the endocannabinoid system in rats. The endocannabinoid system is a set of nerve receptors and related body chemicals that deal with appetite, pain-sensation, mood and memory. The interesting thing about the nerve receptors is that they respond to cannabinoids, one of the components of marijuana.
I have a special interest in this research because my brother Michael was a major contributor to the field. When he first started working in the field of pain transmission in the body, he explained to me that the body creates chemicals that lock into the receptors on nerve endings and prevent the transmission of pain. Nature creates other chemicals that fold up in a way that permits them to lock into the same receptors and prevent the transmission of pain. These include the opioids, like morphine, and the cannabinoids. The receptors that respond to cannabinoids are part of the endocannabinoid system. The principal difference is that the opioids work in the central nervous system, so they depress breathing and peristalsis. My brother said that the cannabinoids generally work further out in the pain transmission nerves, before they get to the spinal column. They don’t have those ugly side effects.
The NYT describes the research this way:
Among rats given liquid diets high in fat, sugar or protein, the ones who got the fatty liquid had a striking reaction: As soon as it hit their taste buds, their digestive systems began producing endocannabinoids, chemicals similar to those produced by marijuana use.
…
The new research suggests that the focus might be shifted to endocannabinoids in the gut, which could alleviate side effects in the brain. In the rat studies, the researchers injected a cannabinoid-blocking drug into the intestines of the rats and found that they lost interest in the fatty food. “The effect is remarkable,” Dr. Piomelli said. “They are no longer interested in feeding. They stop completely. We were amazed.”
The clear implication of this result is that increasing endocannabinoids in the intestines of a chemo patient will increase the desire for food. I believe the technical name for this phenomenon is “munchies”, though that may date me.
The NYT article is focused on the implications for obesity. A lot of people don’t seem to be able to control their eating, leading to weight gains, even to morbid obesity. Many of them claim that they can’t control their weight, and there is some support for this in the medical community. Perhaps in some cases their endocannabinoid systems are ramped up beyond those of other people.
The study tells us that infusing rat intestines with a cannabinoid blocker reduces the desire to feed on fat. That suggests the possibility of drugs to reduce eating behaviors. The NYT says there is one such drug, but it was withdrawn because of “…severe psychological side effects, including suicidal thoughts.“ Hopefully we can find another blocker with fewer side effects. Maybe you really can just eat one potato chip.
The DEA should be fine with cannabinoid blockers. It’s the chemo patients and people who need more cannabinoids who will suffer.

Thank you masaccio. This report pushes my hot buttons. From food to fiber, to medicinal value, I consider the repression of marijuana to be a crime. Because the MOTU would have trouble controlling its legal production and use they insist on repressing the use of marijuana despite all evidence to its many valuable contributions. They even repress the ability to conduct scientific studies to present further proof of its usefulness.
If it deosn’t have any medical use then why does the US hold the patent on medical use?
There’s a whole lot wrong with that sentence but the first thing I noticed was that the DEA are cops, not doctors. I might as well call the SAPD for advice on fixing my tooth!
This is not new. Rimonabant was released as an obesity drug in europe years ago. That was the first CB1 antagonist drug. It is dangerous and has several evil, but interesting side effects. People report a reduction in appetites…for everything. Things you used to enjoy will no longer bring you any joy. People began to report severe depression and some even committed suicide. The people who were on it and stopped reported that it took away their desire to play, work, have..ahem…relations….awful stuff.
The human body seems to accept enhancement of the CB receptor systems just fine, while violently rejecting it’s blockage. I am and will remain deeply suspicious of CB1 antagonists.
Here’s the wikilink to get you started but a perusal of the research will set your hair afire:

I assume that is the drug Acomplia, described in the New York Times article. The NYT article seems to say drug therapies might work. It sounds from your link like the endocannabinoid system operates at a pretty deep level, and you can’t just manipulate one part of it.
Even if marijuana were the fountain of youth and cure-all for every disease that afflicts humankind, it would still be illegal because big pharma and the booze industry control the DEA.
The only way to get corporations out of government is to file a bullet-proof lawsuit that would force the Supreme Court to overturn the Citizens United decision, also, put an end to ‘corporate personhood’.
Voir dire’d in a possession case, an Assistant DA
once asked me if I had any particular view as to
possession and culpability.
Really entirely honestly I responded, perhaps exactly:
“THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, is identical to
anandamyde, one of your brain’s natural endorphins.
This has to be a degree issue, if an issue at all,
not a right or wrong issue.”
He said I was excused from jury duty (that case.)
I’ve a compromise on the issue in mind: young kids
can understandably, regardless of their parents,
lack judgement. Selling to minors, maybe, should
remain illegal. But legalizing pot otherwise is still
enough, probably, to end the carnage South of the Border,
the unproductive incarceration of vast numbers of Americans,
and the loss of potential state tax revenue.

Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground–everything that has the breath of life in it–I give every green plant for food.”
BIBLE, Genesis 1:29-30
Just info for the tighty whities, their bible taken literally empowers us to use and enjoy.
It is about control and you will never control people whose minds have been illuminated.
Interesting in light of repression.
The hallucinogen DMT is a part of our physical make up. The pineal gland releases it at birth, death and dreams.
I would say that no one has the right to tell anyone that they cannot ingest mind altering plants. Obviously, they are not for everybody and should be used with wisdom and guidance.
This is about control and you cannot control someone who has ingested or smoked any number of these substances.
Any society that prohibits their use is suspect and no society I want to be a part of.
This post, which is excellent, makes me laugh and cry. That it even has to be written is a sad testament to the condition we are in. I laugh and shun the fools who think they control us.
In the words of one who really did not partake, Mr. Zappa “Whatever happened to all the fun in the world.”
Sorry to veer off a bit but this is a very sore subject to a free spirit.
And for info on just how heinous are government is, and this is just one of many horrors they inflict, check this out

People have been studying endocannabinoids as retrograde neurotransmitters at NDMA receptors for years. They limit oversignalling in the neocortex in processing related to memory formation.
I apologize for the repeat sentences. I am using a laptop computer and cannot for the life of me miss the mouse pad when typing. I typed this four times lost it twice. It is driving me crazy he says laughing.
I second the motion.
The DEA creed is fanaticism in pursuit of the evil of illicit drugs, especially marijuana. They are a religious cult in nature. They must protect their $2.6 billion annual budget at all costs. Their jobs, families, and entire careers depend upon their level of zeal in that pursuit. Read “The DEA Nobody Knows” by R. Ronneberg if you have, or have access to, a Kindle e-book:

It’s an eye opener of investigating reporting.
Please remember that the people that make the laws also own stock in the prisons that incarcerate the offending individuals. These lawmakers get paid by the day per prisoner as stockholders. One of the old axioms is that a police state cannot exist without enough criminals. If you do not have enough criminals you must create them. Create them by passing nonsensical laws that cannot be obeyed. This is about money not medicine. I am glad that mechanisms are being explored and being understood.
The marijuana issue is vitally important to any overall progress because it is the epicenter of a. Psychosis in our political processes. The validation of delusionary thinking which keeps cannabis illegal spreads throughout our political process like cancer, and consumes every last shred of realism, compassion and courage in our system, leaving us with a Congress of Lunatics in charge of ruling our nation.
Accomplia is only one brand name. It is sold under different names in different countries. The non-trademark generic drug is Rimonabant.
