Hey, CT. Hi, Mauimom. Since it’s a little quiet tonight, I thought I’d just mention to Mauimom that I lived in Houston from 1956 to 1962…….having moved to Spring Branch at age 12 from California. Brave new world. I think you were in Houston at the same approx time.
I caught a temperature anomaly map for the US for this week. The whole country was beet-red except for a bit of the Northwest and here. It hit 92 today, several light showers. It should be under 90 for the rest of the week.
Spring Branch!!!! That’s where I went to high school [and junior high & elementry school starting in 4th grade.]
I also moved there from CA. Quite a change. My “usual” story is about how my brother and I, upon discovering “colored” and “white” water fountains, would go up to the “colored” ones, push the button, and be mystified re why colored water wouldnt’ come out. That’s what the sign was for, right?
Yo Brother CT, great tunes as always…my son and I have been turnin’ his 2 younger sisters (my 2 daughters) on to some a the real truth from back in the day. Haven’t gotten as far up into the 70′s and 80′s as the Doobies and there’s so much between Zepplen, Hendrixx, The Pearl and The Dead that we ain’t got to Styx.
How’s mountain sky watchin…been up there lately?
Keep your eyes on District 10 over here in the land of the free cheese, Shelly moore is up 8 points and risin’…gunna maybe turn some of the professional citizens upside down here. If things keep goin this direction, we might turn 4 or 5 of the 6 districts up for grabs (only need 3).
Been fishin’, talkin trash and stayin away from the real world for 2 of the last 3 weeks…tell me again why I came back?
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, NOBODY WILL FIGHT THIS ONE FOR YOU!!
Good evening all .. thanks for hosting CT .. and all the best with the potential “position” .. that whole “climate change” concept is gaining a foothold I hear? .. we have the coolest dampest spring/summer in my memory .. consistent with the “vagaries” of global warming .. err “climate change” /s
Red Rocks is a fine venue. I saw Dire Straights there. I also saw Michael Hedges there for an afternoon show. There were probably only 20 people in the audience for that one. He was playing a double-necked acoustic – thing. Guitar and bass combined, I think. Lotsa strings. He kept them all humming.
I always wondered over the years when you mentioned your years in Houston! Stories to share! I’m dwrushing AT aol DOT com if you ever want to share recollections of those interesting years. Did you ever take drama with Ms.Grillo?
Apparently [according to sports writer son, who's following on-line], Rays have used 9 pitchers.
We went to the local baseball game last night. 10 total runs in first three innings. Son said talent was no as good as what he’d covered at the high school state championship in VA.
Damn, but that song brings back some special memories .. my cousin and I were planning on coming down to the US of A and enlisting in the Marines .. and a funny thing happened that summer .. her name was Mary Jane and I ain’t never been the same again .. 1-0 Red Sox going into bottom of the 16th ..
I generally find DKos useless and only read it if I want to become severely pissed off or hopeless, but there was an amazing post which confirms Truman’s Theory of Elections, concerning independent or “moderate” voters that lean Rep or Dem. Basically, the data shows that parties win elections when they motivate their base, and moreover shows that parties that motivate their base capture a larger percentage of self-styled independents. This analysis flies in the face of Obushma and the Obushmabots who claim that bipartisanship is the summum bonum and that compromising at all costs is a political virtue.
Truman’s Theory
“I’ve seen it happen time after time. When the Democratic candidate allows himself to be put on the defensive and starts apologizing for the New Deal and the fair Deal, and says he really doesn’t believe in them, he is sure to lose. The people don’t want a phony Democrat. If it’s a choice between a genuine Republican, and a Republican in Democratic clothing, the people will choose the genuine article, every time; that is, they will take a Republican before they will a phony Democrat, and I don’t want any phony Democratic candidates in this campaign.” Pres. Truman, 1952 speech
Exactly. There are very few actual swing voters. It is more a matter of turn-out. Give the people something to vote for, and they show up to vote. People in this country are HUNGRY for candidates who stand for progressive values and then fight like hell for them once elected. They aren’t looking for appeasers and deal-makers.
Charlie Cook, of the Cook Report, had made an astute observation…! In that in ’08 and ’10, the Gooper turnout was the same percentage down to a tenth of a point…! Speaks volumes…!
I maintain that the 2010 election will be the best Republican outcome for a generation.
They do an absolutely outstanding job of turning out their base, every time, Presidential cycles, mid-terms, local races, etc.
The down side is – that’s all they got.
If you can find issues or candidates to motivate progressive voters to the polls, you win and win big. That’s what happened in 2008 when we thought we were electing the black FDR. It would not have happened if Clinton had been the candidate. She was the only Democrat who could possibly have lost to McCain.
All the politicians are fighting the battles of the 90s when the Republican coalition was at its demographic peak. It ain’t so no mo’, and won’t be again for the foreseeable future.
Yet more confirmation. Even when we have the facts we’re still outgunned in the messaging department, since DC and the elite punditry spout their bullshit paeans to bipartisanship and all the “serious” people dutifully follow along. Perhaps if we had a liberal leader who could command the bully pulpit? Wait, wasn’t that part of the reason why Obushma was elected?
That’s another interesting data point. The pool of potential dems is far greater than the rep. pool, which is why, as Maddow has pointed out recently, rep. scum are trying to make it harder for traditionally dem. voting groups to actually be able to vote.
Hey Tut an all Firedogs. I am glad to see you may move up the hill to the big eyeglass. I did read Glenn W Smiths piece this morn and i read all the comments more than once. FDL has more soul than i think you could find in any one place. That’s my spiel and i am sticking with it.
The GOP is not getting any traction I see from the comments here our weakness is thanks to Obama we have nothing to sell voters running away from Lefty ideas is like running away from the New Deal. The Dems only hope is change direction and go Left or run on Fear of the GOP taking over.
Obama seems unlikely to go Left so we must assume fear is his plan. But if he cuts SS and Medicare what else is there left to Fear?
Good point. One of my bigger fears is a Tea Bagger or market worshiper making SC and FedC appointments. Obushma did shift the SC to the right by replacing a liberal–Stevens, with a moderate–Kagan. But the shift would’ve been much sharper had McCain or any generic (R) been making the appointments.
It’s all relative. =) I only gave personal info to reinforce the point about so-called “postmodernist” voters. Apparently I’m one of those in the group of first-time voters that voted overwhelmingly for O, but largely stayed home in 2010, although I did vote for the dem. candidate 2010 in a losing bid out of fear of tea baggers.
The money this year is not up to what we have seen in the past. Looking for a tight winter. We cannot afford new parts so we are robbing them from other less used machines. Then having them altered at the local machine shop. Yeah they get to make a few bucks. From now on i am donating 5 hours of my work to the food bank-in cash. This winter looks bleak. But i have a reunion to go to this Sept and it’s all the friends i know who know all the friends i know. We are a large group of people who have known each other at different points in time. Alas we have never all been together at the same time. This may happen in late September. SF seems to be the place and we are all in our 50′s so this will be the big 50 party. May not be a chance again for this. What with this world changing as it is. Hoping for a good band maybe the Dead? Nobody has asked me for money so i count that out. Life is change.
Fitz??
Great to “see” you in the book salon yesterday, CT

Spring Branch!!!! That’s where I went to high school [and junior high & elementry school starting in 4th grade.]

STYX and Yes are having a fine reception on their latest tour – they’re here at Red Rocks sometime in August I think.
Yeah, this Sox fan has been watching that game as well.
However, we’re now watching Friday Night Lights via Netflix, so LMK if there’s a score.

I liked Edwards populism, I’m glad he didn’t make it since they’d probably have impeached him by now…! 8-(
Pleasant dreams, 4cdave…!

Grand Valley State University did a lip dub to that Styx song. See it here.
