What I do not understand is why we are not seeing the kinds of protests shown in that video here. Using the real numbers (U6) we have at least 16% unemployment and long term unemployment is actually as high or higher than during the great Depression. so what the fuck are our leaders dithering about? The fucking deficit, when we can borrow all the money we need at 3% interest or less. No fucking jobs, no fucking improvements to our decaying infrastructure, no fucking taxes on the parasitic rentier elites, and no bloody hope of anybody giving a damn.

Here, I think it depends on the presence of a strong union movement and substantial radical left. NYC and Madison both have those, but unions are fading in much of the country and the radical left has largely been moribund for 40 years in most parts of the country.

Probably not. It does not seem to register a level of awareness sufficient to grasp that rather elementary point.
I have very dear friends who are as liberal as they come who have been in survival mode for so long long that they can’t imagine “making waves” and agitating for change. They are so terrified of losing the precious little they have that they won’t risk being labeled as “radicals” or whatever. Maybe Joplin was right and freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose. I think people have to lose much more before they get angry enough to risk losing their jobs or homes or communities, etc.
As for myself: well there’s also a certain amount of freedom that comes with being a member of arguably the most discriminated against group in the United States. All I have left to take away is my birthday and I’d willingly give them that.
We have to go with the trolls we have, not the ones we wish we had. :)

For the record I don’t think it’s a big deal that Obama has to take sole responsibility for raising the debt limit. But he does. It undermines his intention to run in 2012 as the guy who closed the deficit, and that’s why he is cussing mad. Well, that and the fact that he has to undergo ritual humiliation at the hands of the GOP every 2 months to get what he wants.
The irony is that the kool aid drinkers are so out of touch with who Obama is and what he wants that they don’t realize their cheering for this deal is like twisting the knife. It makes it impossible for him to reject in the end, which empowers the GOP to hold out.
Cantor offered a temp deal 3 times tonight, and by both Dem and GOP accounts, that’s what made Obama snap. You gotta feel sorry for the guy. His most ardent supporters are the dumbest motherfuckers in the world, and don’t even realize he thinks they are digging his political grave.
