Hatch is saying what all the pols seem to be thinking. I mean, lets look at the facts. Obama says we’ll all have to share the pain…who do you think he means when he proposes cutting ss and Medicare? Look at Joe Lieberman who thought it was perfectly acceptable to ask a waitress, a factory worker, the poor slobs who work on their feet day in and day out, to work another year before they could get their social security. I think it’s sort of in with the elites to ask the poor to shoulder more pain just most don’t say it as bluntly as Hatch.
Krugman finally concedes Obama is a conservative. He also mentions that Obama’s plan for the first time ever excludes some people from Medicare. This is very scary stuff. The glue that holds Medicare together politically is that everyone gets it.
Orrin Hatch: The ‘Poor’ Should Do More To Shrink Debt, Not The Rich (VIDEO).
The poor need jobs! And they also need to share some of the responsibility.
Senator Hatch seriously needs to get his head out of his ass and take a look around. Unfortunately, these morons aren’t there because they know how to legislate or govern properly. They’re there because they will shamelessly say anything while their puppetmasters rip off the country.
Howard Dean was absolutely pathetic on Morning Joke — calling for a “Grand Bargain.”
(But Jane did get a shout out for “The Breaking Point.”)
I never understood why people thought Howard Dean was a liberal.
Cry me a river. The fact is that half of this country – however situated – pay nothing in federal income taxes and yet are the biggest beneficiaries of the government’s services. Yet when the progs espouse “shared sacrifice” what they really mean is that ” those other guys” need to share the sacrifice amongst themselves.
I’m all for closing tax loopholes. I would even be ok with raising tax rates across the board (and that includes making sure every person pays some income taxes). But not without important cuts in spending. It’s the spending side of the equation that is out of control on an historical basis. Does the military to face some cuts? Yes. But so does every other line item in the federal budget. We can’t live with the monstrous deficits.
Dean was a liberal. His mistake is that he’s sticking with the Democratic Party and towing the party line. It’s time to jettison the Democratic Party along with its Republican Party bedmates.
Good morning and thanks for the linkfest, BT.
Orin Hatch is a vile cretin piece of shit.
When, oh when will someone, anyone, stand up and shout at the very top of their voice “Social Security has never added one fucking nickel to the debt or a budget deficit.
I wonder how all the poor Mormons of Utah feel about their Senator’s comments. Maybe all people in Utah are rich like Hatch.
Having said the above, Orrin needs to be sent out to pasture as soon as possible like his good friend Bennett.
Well, he was anti-war but I don’t think he’s ever been a liberal on economic issues.
Krugman finally concedes Obama is a conservative.
It’s worth noting that even Republicans weren’t suggesting cuts to Social Security; this is something Mr. Obama and those he listens to apparently want for its own sake.
But Dean should know that a “Grand Bargain” — that includes cuts to Medicare and SS — hands the Senate and House to the Rs, no?
We’ve seen this movie before.
Liberals warn Obama against cutting entitlement benefits
notice all the buzz words, they use “liberals” instead of “the majority of people” and they use “entitlement”
the headline alone was written to give obama footing to turn away from the damn hippys
From the article above:
the 51 percent Hatch cites is made up primarily of people who either don’t have income (senior citizens and students) or people who don’t earn enough to reach into even the lowest tax bracket. And regardless of what Hatch says, they do pay taxes.
Can you even see past your GOP talking points, or do you just recite them?
… they use “liberals” instead of “the majority of people”
Yeah, when every poll shows that 60+% of people OPPOSE cuts to Medicare and SS.
He’s dancing to the Democratic Party leadership’s tune. Apparently, he hasn’t figured out yet that the Democratic Party has become the second head of a two-headed monster that fights for the rich and shits on the poor while the country is going to hell.
Krugman has been on Obama’s case for a long time, whether he has affixed a label or not. He now aims and fires on practically every blog post.
Oh. My. God. Some people actually believe this is all just a political ploy by Obama to make Republicans look bad: http://www.salon.com/technology/how_the_world_works/2011/07/07/reasons_not_to_panic_on_obama_and_social_security/index.html
Jesus Christmas, this sort of rationalization isn’t helpful.
Who pays attention to polls? Certainly not our elected representatives and our President, who just do what they want instead of what WE want.
Sorry, I am feeling very sour lately.
‘Lebenty-dimensional chess, again. How tired that rationale is getting.
Glue that holds Medicare together — that’s not the half of it!
Just what does Obama think holds the Democratic Party together?
Does he think it’s the party of Crazy-lite? Is that it? Is that the legacy of Jefferson, FDR, the Kennedy’s, King etc.?
Does he think that aging former factory worker in Ohio or that Iowa single-mom just barely getting by and caring for her elderly mother in her “spare” time just love awesome O?
I don’t know about you, but the typical Republican friend or family member I know votes Republican because they dream of getting rich and they secretly hope the Democrats will be there with the safety net if it doesn’t work out.
If it weren’t for the signature safety-net programs what identity would the party have at all? You could have said we’re the party of civil rights but that requires supporting the practical policy implications of a just society.
In order to “save” and “strengthen” SS and Medicare Obama must first destroy them. A man who philosophically has abandoned traditional Democratic values, if he ever had them. Primary Obama!!!
Agreed. I said this just yesterday, people vote for Democrats first and foremost to protect SS and Medicare.
Mornin’, BT, pups
oldnslow, Hatch has been a vile piece of shit all his life. Can’t stand the whiny little motherfucker’s voice.
And for the deficit troll, you’re in the wrong place tryin’ to sell that pile of horseshit. Didja have to rent a front end loader to get that pile outta yer front yard?
He thinks it’s the party of BHO. Narcissistic a whole.
You still think the Democrats care about winning elections, don’t you?
They’re just doing their part for the puppetmasters.
Politics in America have descended to this:
Republicans win. Republicans suck. Republicans lose/Democrats win. Democrats suck. Democrats lose/Republicans win. Republicans suck. Republicans lose/Democrats win. Democrats suck. Democrats lose/Republicans win. Republicans suck. Republicans lose/Democrats win. Democrats suck. Democrats lose/Republicans win.
Kabuki is the new name of the game in politics.
And he wants to raise taxes — LOL
Maybe it’s time for progressives to hit the streets – http://xr.com/3zod
18,000 jobs in June, unemployment rate up a tick to 9.2%, downward revisions by 44,000 in April & May, average hourly earnings down in June.
The Truth about the Deficit and Social Security
I think that can’t be emphasized enough. People will tell me I should fear Michelle Bachmann. Well, it’s not Michelle who is in the Oval Office willing to sign the repeal of Social Security NOW. The immediate problem is the administration in office NOW.
Now, that he has expressed a willingness to cut my retirement income by thousands of dollars does he think I’m going to believe it is safe to give him a second term?
I don’t know what Romney will do. I know what Obama is ready to do.
Hi, eCAHN! Have you been getting a lot done outside? I sure have, weather has been great and I’m into a big perennials-and-shrubs-planting project.
This is why Barry is “going BIG.”
And Pluff is saying unemployment won’t matter.
In FL 1300 state workers got laid off earlier this week, to be followed by an unknown number of teachers who are either gonna be laid off or moving out of state. When NASA shuts down at Kennedy that’s another 7000+ jobs. All the while (P)rick Scott is touting how many jobs he’s created in the state. Actual number = z-e-r-o.
In regards to this article:
“…Such threatening language is common any time politicians discuss possible changes to the popular entitlement programs that comprise a big part of the Democratic political legacy….”
Why is it a Democratic legacy? Are you telling me all the blue/gray hairs that vote Republican year in and year out would be fine with destroying Social Security and/or Medicare? Isn’t this what the teabaggers were all about a month or so ago? “Hands off my Medicare…”, etc.
This isn’t just a 3rd rail for Democrats, it is one for Republicans as well. As much as politicians like to piss and moan about it, all seniors count on these programs to one degree or another. To even put up a trial balloon is dumb, regardless of party. You want to not get re-elected, go ahead try to touch it. It is just as taboo as defense/intelligence spending.
If we were actually serious, we’d talk about the fact that the only two things that have brought us to this point are BUSH TAX CUTS and the SIX+ WARS we have been fighting for the past decade. Get rid of those and I think we’d be doing just fine.
Why balance the government on the status quo of today. This situation cannot last. This is unsustainable. Until we are willing to acknowledge that and take action to bring those things under control, this is all grandstanding nonsense.
Morning BT & Firepups:
It’s a Big Club…and you ain’t in it.
Good morning SoDrag.
The entire Senate seems to be is populated by hopeless assholes that have not the faintest idea how to solve problems. And what passes for a Democrat these days would make the Democrats of my youth physically ill.
Yes, getting outdoor work done. Stamina coming back. Tractor on the fritz, though. Maybe starter switch.
Is there a recall effort of Scott in FL?
Private sector jobs up 57,000, so public sector were down 39,000.
And slightly o/t, but slightly not o/t…
Rude weighs in.
It’s time to start pulling up the paving stones. To the barricades!
O to speak about jobs report later this morning at 10:35. cnbc advance read is that O will say that it’s the USG deficit that’s holding the economy back.
IIRC, prez & FRB chair get the jobs number in advance, maybe last night.
Maybe if we lower public sector jobs even more, private sector jobs will soar. /s
Yes — and move to the structural unemployment argument.
Heh. The more centrist anchor on cnbc is asking the wingnut Santorum if he’s happy that pubic sector jobs are declining.
There are no provisions for the recall of state level elected officials. Yet. Various counties and cities have recall provisions in their charters, eg, Miami-Dade mayor recalled earlier this year. I’ve heard rumblings of an initiative to put recall provisions into the state constitution on the ballot but that’s what they are so far, rumblings.
Yeah, U.S. workers are just too stoopid & lazy to train for the really great jobs that are in abundance.
Ezra on Morning Joke: We need stimulus.
Fuck you, Ezra.
I don’t know if they care about winning elections but it’s time for people to take their votes back and use them more creatively. I don’t have any illusions about winning at least at first but we owe ourselves and our children a place for a vote against this corrupt system even if we see no chance right now that such a movement can win the day.
O will say that it’s the USG deficit that’s holding the economy back.
All that SS money being locked up is really slowing things down…
You bet, O…
I hope Barry says unemployment is up because they haven’t made a deal — and that has increased uncertainty. I wanna see The Shrill One’s head explode.
“The Shrill One?” I’m afraid you’ll need to be more specific for this obtuse mind, as I find there are too many to count these days…
I have to wonder just how many private sector job openings are created by normal retirement. That figure alone has to be in the tens of thousands each month.
Time to roll out Melia and Sasha.
Years ago somebody called Krugman shrill. He’s been known here as The Shrill One ever since.
Have a friend in Naples, one of the few liberals in the city, and he just couldn’t believe that a crook of the magnitude of Scott was elected by the “good” citizens of Florida. The electorate chose poorly.
What the USA needs is out of the norm. The Democrats need to replace Obama now!Fine someone to the left of Obama mabe a republican.Someone who Respects The USA Building, and Production of Goods Laborers.Someone that not been involved with the last 40 years of moveing Production of Goods to slave labor nations for self and not for the good of all USA Citizens.Democrats theres a Man that can fill what’s good for all the USA Citizens keep Obama and keep worse than a Republican. We need someone that’s worked with Commercial Building, worked with Production of Goods. We do not need Goverment looking for another Slave Labor Nation. The Baby Boomers that been liquidateing all the Greatest Generation built for the real security of the USA was the labor of the common person.Investing in slave wages is not good for the Citizens of the whole USA and World Citizens.
If Melia and Sasha aren’t sure that Michelle and I can pay our bills, hey, they don’t do their homework.
Fuck Axelrod and Plouffe. Primary the Prick!!!
A lot of stay at homes caused that. I’ve yet to find a Regressive who will admit to having voted for Scott. A former consultant to the R Party here said on the radio the other day that many Republicans would like to leave the party because its become a party for the personal enrichment of the leadership and elected officials.
cnbc advance read is that O will say that it’s the USG deficit that’s holding the economy back.
many thanks. will look for a link to listen live.
But Al Gore is still fat.
Just bc cnbc sez it doesn’t make it so.
Bachman was on cnbc & she said that stim didn’t work. Just increased the debt. So that is prolly the R talking point.
Waste of time, energy and money. Put those resources to work electing local and county folks who are on the left.
(delong drives me nuts econ-wise, but for shrill humor he rocks)
I sorta remember that I’ve seen Krugman refer to himself as “shrill” too. His sense of humor is a hoot.
you mean that O may not be making a statement or that cnbc description of statement could be massively & wildly wrong?
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.
US KIA Afghanistan: 1,656
US KIA Irak: 4,469
Iraki, Afghan and Pakistani casualties: estimates vary to over 1.5M
US MBS 2011: 23,312 and counting
No war but class war
Never. Give. Up.
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things
sadlyyes said Bernie Sanders was tweeting this yesterday:
Bernie Sanders tweets: On SS surplus
Social Security has a $2.6 trillion surplus and hasn’t contributed 1 cent to our deficit.
Amy Goodman just played Sanders’ statement on DN!
And apropos of the final shuttle launch…
That’s great: I love Sanders’ messaging … and it just *happens* to be true.
Hey, Sorry I missed you; got here late.
2 TX items: Yes, Leal was executed yesterday. Just ignore those treaty provisions. We can see what happens to a US citizen next time in Mexico.
And fellow in stands at W’s old stadium dies when he fell out of the stands as he tried to grab the baseball. Wow, that gives me a headache in more ways that one.
exactly, and the millionaire media is handjobbing their billionaire bosses
… didn’t realize it was W’s old stadium. Very sad story.
Treaties are so … well, you know, *quaint* ~ I guess Mexico is out of favor for some reason. Or Perry is in favor. Or SOMETHING.
want to lose a shitpile of money, listen to CNBC….always late info, always wrong info
There you are, sadlyyes ~ @71, I cited you citing Sanders. Thanks!
Good morning, dear!
met him at a seminar…like him a lot
The WH telephone number is 202-456-1111.
If there isn’t a primary challenge to Obama and he wins the nomination I’ll be writing in Bernie Sanders.
you have it right, again.
How freaking stooopid can this guy get, do you suppose?
Bernie Sanders is now the ONLY pol that seems to speak to me. All the others seem to be liars.
No, I pretty much feel that way all on my own. Half this country has earnings that go untaxed at the federal income tax level. Yet they suck out more resources that anyone else.
Fuck Orin Hatch. He is a disgusting human piece of shit.
How much of that is tax-sheltered by the wealthy?
Actually, private sector was up 157K for June
I have written my congressman and senator expressing my disgust with putting SS and medicare on the table with the debt ceiling talks. Not that it will do any good in the great state of Missouri. Most people here vote against their own interests all the time. What to do?
Mabye the wage earner that does not pay Payroll Taxes Needs a raise so the Owner can get off welfair labor. This nation is going in a deep hole with the none produceing business Owners that pay less than a liveable wage.
That’s not fair to shit.
I know but didn’t know what else to say. My loathing for these motherfuckrs in Congress doesn’t even begin to express how I feel about them.
And they are seniors, students, and those who don’t earn enough to even be minimally taxed. You are being intentionally obtuse. But I am wasting time with you. Just take your bogus talking points somewhere else.
