By: emptywheel Tuesday June 7, 2011 3:37 pm

We’re going to have to wait until the Canadian court releases more details on the failed extradition of Peter Alfred Adekeye to get a better sense of what the government did to piss off the court so badly. But this is my attempt to the crux of the matter.

State of Polar Sea Ice: Arctic Near Record Low; Antarctic Normal

By: WeatherDem Tuesday June 7, 2011 1:56 pm

Sea ice in the Arctic continues to track significantly below average, with the 3rd lowest readings for the month in the modern era. Antarctic sea ice recovered somewhat more quickly to normal conditions than was the case the month before. Global sea ice area has therefore remained near historical lows for an extended period of time this year. Within the last month, global sea ice area has finally improved from the 1 million sq. km. deficit from climatological conditions that characterized the first four months of 2011. To help put this in context, only 2006 and 2007 saw similar conditions. In 2007, the Arctic (and global) sea ice area fell to its lowest extent in modern history.

Register of Deeds O’Brien Rejects Fraudulent Foreclosure Documents

By: David Dayen Tuesday June 7, 2011 1:15 pm

Only now are we beginning to get the investigations showing the extent of the problems, between Field’s findings, the subpoenas and spade work from state AGs, the HUD Inspector General report showing that the banks filed false claims to recoup government-funded insurance on FHA loans, and the recent discoveries from county registers of deeds. One register, Jeff Thigpen of Guilford County, North Carolina, looked through the records in his office and found thousands of instances of fraudulent documents and forged signatures. Another register, John O’Brien of the Southern Essex District in Massachusetts, has decided to reject all robo-signed records coming into his office, forcing the entities wishing to foreclosure under his jurisdiction to file separate forms.

New Poll Shows Most Americans Think Economy Still in Ditch

By: Jon Walker Tuesday June 7, 2011 11:50 am

The most recent ABC News/Washington Post poll (PDF) found that 57 % of Americans based, on their own personal experience, don’t think the economy has began to recover. Only 42 % feeling it has began to recover and among that group 81% feel the recovery has been weak.

The fact that so few Americans actually feel the economy has recovered highlights the point Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg has been making about the serious failure of Obama messaging over the past few years
