Joe Burns’ incredibly important new book seems to me much larger than the labor movement. I hope he will share with us today some insights into his view of U.S. labor history and the potential for a U.S. labor future, but also his perspective on how this impacts our society as a whole. Are we right to look to the labor movement as a possible ally in the struggle for justice and maybe even peace?

Obama DOJ’s War on Free Speech & Activism |
| By: Kevin Gosztola Saturday June 18, 2011 1:00 pm |
A few days ago, rallies were held in cities all over the United States in support of veteran Chicano activist Carlos Montes, who had his home raided by the FBI on May 17. The rallies coincided with Montes’ arraignment hearing for felony charges, which were filed against him by the LA County Sheriffs and FBI after the raid.
The target of an ever-expanding government investigation into antiwar and international solidarity activists, Montes demanded that his charges be dropped. The District Attorney denied his request. Montes asked to see the search warrant and police report on the raid of his home. The District Attorney initially refused the request but then agreed to release heavily edited versions of the documents. Montes was also told he would not be allowed to show the documents to the press.
Feingold for Governor: Scott Walker & WI GOP’s War on Good Beer |
| By: bmaz Saturday June 18, 2011 12:00 pm |
I don’t know what the fine Cheese-and-Bratheads up in Wisconsin did to piss off the political gods, but they have been blighted. It was bad enough to cause national outrage and solidarity when extreme right wing movement conservative Governor Scott Walker and the crazed GOP majorities in the state legislature started attacking the working men and women of Wisconsin’s unions, teachers, cops and firefighters. But now they have gone a bridge too damn far.
And that is why I am supporting Russ Feingold in a recall election against Walker, and you should too.
Obama Spokesman Denies 1996 Gay Survey |
| By: Tracy Baim Saturday June 18, 2011 11:00 am |
In January of 1996 he filled out the IMPACT questionnaire, and it appears to be in his own writing, and uses the first-person “I” throughout. While the IMPACT questions were a bit more complicated, Obama did say he would oppose any attempts to outlaw same-gender marriage, by supporting a resolution stating “the state should not interfere with same-gender couples who chose [sic] to marry and share fully and equally in the rights, responsibilities and commitment of civil marriage.”
AARP – Don’t Fork with My Social Security |

I was so disgusted to read that AARP now supports cutting Social Security benefits today that I wrote the following email to them cancelling my membership.
Flood of Rumors along the Missouri River |
| By: Peterr Saturday June 18, 2011 9:00 am |
The flood of waters continues, but as usual during a natural disaster, the flood of rumors is rolling right along with it. Mythical levee breaches compete with imaginary government policy decisions, all of which combine to try to drive those who are dealing with the actual flooding bonkers.
And don’t even get me started about a Fukushima-style disaster in Nebraska . . . Get a link, people — and it ought to be from someone closer to Nebraska than Hawaii.
Rumors flow faster than the water during a disaster like this. The folks who are working on protecting homes, businesses, and communities have enough to do without having to beat back rumors — but this, too, is part of dealing with a disaster.
Obama Ignored Advice of Top Legal Advisors, OLC in Waging War in Libya |
| By: David Dayen Saturday June 18, 2011 7:52 am |
We now have an innovation in executive power. During the Bush Administration, mid-level functionaries would be found to write legal justifications for waging war, committing acts of torture, or what have you. Now, during the Obama Administration, the top lawyers are free to give their considered opinion on these issues. But the President will simply overrule them.
Come Saturday Morning: I Called the AARP Debacle |
| By: Phoenix Woman Saturday June 18, 2011 6:45 am |
My guess is that they were thinking of doing so as a way to give cover to Democrats wanting to cut a debt ceiling deal with the Republicans before the August drop-dead date, and who are too cowardly to back tax hikes on the rich and corporations as the only real solution. The timing is certainly suggestive: Announce it soon, then do a nationwide bullshit blitz on the virtues of cat food, so that the Democrats don’t suffer too much come 2012.
Pull Up a Chair |

What are you doing for Fathers Day? Anything special… dinner or brunch? Maybe a movie? We might do that, too, since I have budgeted enough money for both. If we go to a movie, I might eat some butterless popcorn or some raisinettes. What are your plans?
