Another day, another lawsuit for the big banks – in this case JPMorgan Chase and the Royal Bank of Scotland – over their mortgage and securitization practices. Only this one comes from the National Credit Union Administration, a federal agency.

Why the Market Will Not Reduce Health Care Costs |
| By: Jon Walker Monday June 20, 2011 12:30 pm |
Looking at how the incentives in our health care market are currently set up, there is little reason to hope the “market” will magically come up with innovations to reduce our national health care spending. It is no surprise given looking at our structural innovation issues that for decades we have seen health care cost grow so rapidly.
Obama War Powers Treachery and The Founders’ Remedies |
| By: bmaz Monday June 20, 2011 11:30 am |
If our society and political discourse cannot seriously discuss impeachment for the type of executive perfidy demonstrated by Barack Obama in relation to Libya and the War Powers Resolution, and could not discuss it during the Bush/Cheney crimes, then the impeachment provision of the Constitution has no meaning and should be stricken.

I think if the President had spent the last three years repeating some variation of this, he’d be in much better shape — as would the Democratic Party.
Why AARP’s Support for Social Security Cuts Matters |
| By: Daniel Marans Monday June 20, 2011 9:54 am |
fter AARP’s policy director, John Rother, told the Wall Street Journal on Friday that they were open to cutting Social Security benefits, AARP issued a clarification supposedly “denying” that this was true. Or at least that’s how most people interpreted it. “Oh, don’t worry, that was a gaffe. AARP has clarified for the record that it’s not true.”
A closer look at AARP’s damage control statement, entitled “AARP Has Not Changed Its Position on Social Security,” reveals it to be a non-denial.

I found it hard to believe that someone from OFA (albeit a volunteer) decided it was a good idea to approach two committed LGBT activists at their panel and tell them they couldn’t support marriage equality because Obama “hasn’t gone officially on record for it” — as if the President had to take a position before it was possible to form an opinion on the subject. I realize the guy was young, but nobody forced him to go running up to the stage with the cameras rolling.
House Will Vote on Limiting or Ending Funding in Libya |
| By: David Dayen Monday June 20, 2011 7:41 am |
This could be a consequential week for the President’s war in Libya. The House of Representatives will vote on limiting or ending funding for the military operation, and given the rising anger on both sides of the aisle about the abuse of war powers it just might pass.
Dinner? Really, Mr. President? |
| By: Janet Rhodes Monday June 20, 2011 6:20 am |
Imagine how thrilled I was when I opened my email and discovered a dinner invitation from President Obama, except, of course, it was actually an invitation to buy a raffle ticket. I’ve been mulling it over–imagining what I would say if I had dinner with President Obama.
