"Why won't Mr. 0 bring all soldiers home?" (photo courtesy of Jim White)
Pouting Baby is talking to us again. — JW
Mr. 0 made his big speech last night and told us that he will bring home 10,00 soldiers from Afghanistan this year. That sounds like a big number and it even has some of the soldier bosses upset that Mr. 0 is bringing home more soldiers than they want. But Mr. 0 tripled the number of soldiers that Little Georgie B left there and now only wants to bring home only about a tenth of the ones that are there, so the soldiers are just being greedy like soldiers always are.
Here’s the top soldier giving a waa-waa speech about Mr. 0′s decision:
Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the military’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, acknowledged that Obama’s plans to withdraw nearly a third of the some 99,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan by the end of next summer was a riskier plan than he had initially wanted. Obama announced the withdrawal timetable on Wednesday.
“The president’s decisions are more aggressive and incur more risk than I was originally prepared to accept,” Mullen told a House of Representatives committee hearing in his first comments on Obama’s plan.
When Mr. 0 announced his “surge” of the last 32,000 of these 99,000 soldiers in Afghanistan, he reminded us how many soldiers Little Georgie B had left there:
When I took office, we had just over 32,000 Americans serving in Afghanistan
But somehow, the soldier bosses are so greedy about having more soldiers fighting everywhere they can that bringing home 10,000 soldiers this year and 20,000 next year is “risky”. Funny, I don’t remember them crying about the “risks” Little Georgie B was creating when he had “only 32,000″ soldiers in Afghanistan.
One person who does like the announcement is the drug-selling President of Afghanistan:
Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Thursday welcomed U.S. President Barack Obama’s plans for a U.S. troops drawdown and said it’s a sign that Afghanistan is ready to take control of security in the war-torn nation.
“The number of troops that he has announced to be withdrawn is a sign that Afghanistan is taking over its own security and is trying to defend its territory by its own means,” Karzai said. “So we are happy about the announcement.”
If the president of Afghanistan can stop his drug-selling long enough to say that Afghanistan can take care of its own security, why should Mr. 0 stop with only withdrawing his “surge” troops? Why can’t he bring all our soldiers home from there? Mr. 0 told us this when he announced his surge:
They’ll increase our ability to train competent Afghan security forces, and to partner with them so that more Afghans can get into the fight. And they will help create the conditions for the United States to transfer responsibility to the Afghans.
Doesn’t the drug-selling President’s announcement mean the surge worked and all the soldiers can come home now?
PS Mommy, what’s a “tongue-bath“?

Pouting Baby & Jim!
We cannot bring the troops home because we have always been at war with Eastasia!
POUTING BABY!
Unacceptably tiny though Mr. O’s number seems to be, It sounds like Admiral Mr. M wants to retire early, (and in disgrace). How curious….
pouting baby!
Perhaps one of the reasons Mr. O won’t bring ‘em all home now is that, in the present economy, having all those battle-harden men and women abruptly idled, but with few meaningful jobs available for them…well, that could prove rather troublesome….
Vizzini in The Princess Bride said that the number 1 thing everybody knows to avoid getting involved in a land war in Asia. In 1987, that was a throw away line, a “duh” statement.
Maybe Mr. O missed that movie.
It has also been conventional wisdom for more than a century that Afghanistan is the grave yard of empires. We seem to be forgetting all the important lessons of history these days (see also economics).
Greetings from Omaha! I’m at the College World Series and having a great time.
Go Gators!
Well, no.
The present troops have contracts of whatever time frame. So doesn’t matter if we bring them home, they’ll just drill and train on local fields, not on foreign ones, and won’t change the domestic employment rates one jot.
True, though I suspect that if we brought them all home, many would end up mustered out for medical issues (mostly mental health from the strains of multiple redeployments). As long as they are on the front lines, everyone can turn a blind eye and ignore the toll this has taken on them.
Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, the Joint Chiefs chairman who will retire Oct. 1…
Parting shot, perhaps…? ;-)
I hear for profit prisons are on the rise. They’ll need guards. It’s getting to be some scary shit when for profit prisons can lobby lawmakers to pass laws to put more people in prison. With that of course comes the need for more cops to enforce the new laws. That’s all we need: More battle vets on the street who are trained to treat everybody as the enemy by default. What could go wrong?
So? Fix them earlier rather than later.
Really, all of this horrorshow should be dealt with sooner, rather than later IMO.
Yep. There seems to be no end of excuses to justify invading that nation, does there?
No argument here. My point is this is just one more thing that the powers that be do not want to deal with.
I should add… Obama taps Army general to lead Joint Chiefs
Top military leaders are reshuffled…
Aloha, Jim…!
All of them very, very bad.
Sorry, having connection/browser problems, so I’ll drop out now. Hope to see everyone next week.
If Obama ends the warz he wins by at least 57-58% easy.
Night.
Yep. I just don’t get it.
Night Jim, Pout.
Margaret, you have just put your finger on what will eventually be the most scandalous condemnation of our times. We are becoming a prison nation in order to feed the hunger of corporations for cheap labor.
Remember the work crews cleaning up the beaches after the BP oil spill? All prisoners.
A judge in Philly was convicted a few months ago, even, of getting payoffs from a private juvenile detention facility to steam roller innocent kids through his courtroom to them….
Me neither, which is why they will never let either one of us anywhere near the levers of power.
And Thomas is up to his eyeballs in it. It’s insane.
He could do that, and I would applaud that, but nope, that ain’t happening.
Frankly, if Obama would unilaterally withdrawal all troops from the Middle East including Bahrain, Libya, Irak, Afghanistan, (& wherever else I’m forgetting) by Christmas 2012, that would be intense, and I’d vote for him again.
Odds of that are entirely shit, of course.
Oh, sorry Pouting Baby — see you next week. Love that face.
Hiya All!
Boy, everyone hated that speech.
FDL, you need to do a daily expose of Clarence Thomas–turn the heat up until he’s forced to resign….
The latest incarnation of the Old West’s ‘Hang’em High’ judges…! ;-)
Remember when we were asking why GW didn’t just bring all the soldiers
home?
Different President, same shit.
CT, in my view, this entire prison-industrial-complex is geared to the recreation of the old pre-Civil War plantation system of cheap labor. If something isn’t done now to halt its growth, most of the next generation will be endentured incarcerated slaves for the corporalists….
That’s because Rove makes the reality.
Something has to be understood about bringing the troops home: Yes, the military is fat right now because of the warz® but those people all have enlistments to finish out. They aren’t conscripts so troop reduction would be by attrition and not immediate. They will increase the standards needed for retention and advancement and gradually the less fit, able, trained, knowledgeable, etc will be weeded out and separated up until four to six years in the future. That’s how long the economy has to absorb that population. The obvious drawback there, (for the rest of us), is that it will be the less qualified, able, (stable?), well trained, etc who will be dumped into the workforce. Those are your next prison guards, police officers, private security personnel, etc. Lucky us!
Yep. I’m painfully aware of that reality.
The DSM-IV has a name for people who create their own reality.
Maybe DSM-V will change that term to Deranged Politician Syndrome or something similar.
Think I will call it an early night and toddle off. Did a seven mile hike this morning and i am still getting in shape, so I am beat. Take care all.
I favor just changing it to “Republican.” Short, simple and inclusive.
LOL…! K.I.S.S…!
Pleasant Dreams, Dr. D…!
Or even “Conservative”. Some of the ‘baggers want us to believe they aren’t Republican.
Night DrD. I’m out too. Been a long day and a long week.
‘Night Night Peg-a-roo!
*heh* First step in diagnosis should be a measurement of the afflicted individual’s Amygdala…! ;-)
Declare victory and come home. That way Obama can declare hisself the first Commander of a foreign power to have defeated Afghanistan in the history of warfare. Works for me.
Aloha, OFG…! Have you ever journeyed up to Ft. McMurray’s Tar Sands…?
Excuse me, but Obama, in front of a bunch of donors at that NY donor thingy , just said “I was born this way.”
You know what, jerk? “I was born this way.”
I think that’s in Canada. Not far from where I am now, near Minot, ND. No, never visited the tar sands.
I just posted a Diary on those Tar Sands…! To the Last Drop…
If anybody’s interested…! ;-)
You got it. O just needs to say, “Both Iraq and Afghanistan have declared their ability and desire to take over their own security…blah, blah, blah…..and we’ll be bringing ALL our troops home. We’ve completed our agendas.” And, yeah, the damned contractors can be paid strictly by the companies that hired them, or by the Iraqis or by the Afghans. No More From The American Taxpayer. Ever. Again.
And, hey, OFG, nice to see you here. You are so sensible.
You’ve been to Calgary and/or Edmonton, tho…?
Mayor, from New Paltz,NY is on Rachel now.
Canucks won’t let me in–convicted felon that I am. As a young man I ran long hard miles on cheap fuel, if you feel me. Received the full benefit of our outstanding criminal justice system, unlike constitution shredding torturers scheming to bilk old widow women out of their pensions. They tell me I can buy my way in for a $400 “rehabilitation fee.”
$400 “rehabilitation fee.”
Are you serious…? I did know that Canada doesn’t like American Excons crossing the border…!
Kelly, that’s a diary.
OFG, I pray you and yours are safe and sound from the massive flooding…! 8-(
I’m lurving you a lot, but you know what?
I’m sick of that diary business.
I have HAD IT from here to tomorrow with all this crap. I know what is right, I know who should be doing it, they aren’t, and I’m sick of all of them including You-Know-Who.
evening, firegods
Last year, Panetta said there were 50 – 100 Al-Q left in Afghanistan. That’s about 990 soldiers/Al-Q member. So . . . ?
so Mr. O is now Mr. zer0… sly, but not unnoticed!
NPR covered Mullen’s newspeak about it being the pres’ decider thing and he was just saying how it wasn’t what he would have wanted but why should the white general’s opinion outweigh the mulato?
Afghanistan is Mr. O’s Vietnam. In the end, all the killing, all the money and lives wasted won’t mean a thing and will have changed little except make the world more dangerous.
Why is Mr. O building military bases there? For the Taliban to run them? More importantly why did Mr. O make the announcement now, when it means really nothing at all? What is he hiding? His stupid illegal war in Libya?
War is peace.
Pouting Baby & Jim White! I never hear more sense from anyone than I do from Pouting Baby.
I read that if we leave civil war will break out. So what else is new? There always has been and probably always will be civil war. We can’t keep our finger in the tribal wall to stop the flood just waiting for us to leave. Let them go on with their way of life so we can get on with ours. Pull the plug NOW!
