We’ve had “vigorous” on and off-line discussions. One time, getting right down to it, she asked me “why do you think we get to ‘daggers drawn’ sometimes?”

I said “Attitude. I’ve seen things get better for gay people over the years. Change is possible. I’ve seen it.”

She responded [paraphrasing] “Ahh, that’s it. You’ve seen advances. I haven’t [for women].”

So, being a single, ardent feminist, for EVER, I’m not surprised by what she wrote. This shit matters to her as much as the Marriage Equality, Equality at all, matters to me.

That said, and the blog can’t be Editor For Everyone, I don’t blame her for one instant.

There’s a lot going on, tons to cover, and a certain “you’re not blogging about what I want you to blog about” but the War On Women could use a leg up in my view too. Just saying…

Well, not to be too pessimistic, but I can’t see that we Progressives have accomplished much of anything…..I am tired of signing petitions, sending money,writing letters, making calls, emailing. Obama just isn’t interested in us……ask Dan Choi and a long list of whistle blowers. Bradley Manning didn’t get a respite from our efforts, but from the group of lawyers (? — it’s late and I’m too tired to google) who have more clout than we have. We ‘liberals’ have been called “fuckin’ retards”… “the professional left” and probably way more derogatory terms by Obama and his cadre. We not only didn’t get single payer, but we were sold out and then lied to about the “Public Option.” Obama won’t fight for anything Progressives believe in and voted for. So, really…….we all need a rest!

But I feel that even if the recalls are successful there is a chance that the repugs will continue to do whatever they want to. In other words, we aren’t hunger or hurting enough. I have been thinking about this a lot. Look at what is happening in the Middle East. Those people have a much harder life than we do. I worked in Ohio for years, and mnay of my friends are fighting the good fight…but maybe not enough support. We are getting punched from all sides. Imagine that FLA governor wanting to drug test state employees without any good reason. How far will the Righteous Right push before we push back? It requires intelligent folks to recognize what is happening. We had a court administrator in Ohio who figured he would drug test the staff…..just for the fun of it…..and we fought back and backed him into a corner. I wasn’t trying to be harsh, it’s just something I’ve become particularly sensitized to; now that you have the idea, note the times you hear “thug” and see if there isn’t a very ugly pattern.

I found I had to put the kitteh food up where the dawgs couldn’t reach and everyone was happy. The dawgs didn’t mind it when the kittehs got bold and ate out of their dish as that’s the pack thing to do. I was food traffic cop on the circus tricks the integrated pack would do for treats. They loved the show and so did the humans watching. It can work but there’s just a bit of fine tuning. I detest when perfectly good words get corrupted. If you heard a few snips of people on Fox saying “thug”, you’d hear exactly what I’m referring to. Living in CA, I am around lots of people who think racism is a thing of the past. I’ve spent too much time in the south to believe that, and what I see is a nation sliding down the slippery slope after working so hard to crawl up the hill.

I would put the dawgs in sit-stay, feed the kittehs round robin while the dawgs watched then, when the kittehs are done, reward the dawgs with a release command and a come and get it for some *very* stinky, fishy treat which they thought was worth the wait and extremely exciting (the kittehs just want to eat but the dawgs are playing this game, right?). They all were in heaven and eventually they would take turns getting a treat as everybody knew they’d get their fill.

Stand UP! I like her voting record, but she’s too meek. I think we need to be going after our Reps…….if they are Dems you might have more force. If they are Repubs….work to get them out. I’m fighting for myself, but also I’m fighting for my children and grandchildren. agreed. I think it stems from tribalism over laws or ethics.
Much of the news makes me feel slimed too.
I just know I can’t live like that.
But how to convince people not to act like that?

I keep saying “Look to the gay people’s activism; we’re the only ones to achieve actual change.”

And let me tell you why.

It’s because coming out is uncomfortable. It’s also a never-ending process. We keep keeping-on, once we’re out.

Once out, one can’t go back. When you see an obstacle, you have some options; around, over, through, or ignore.

It’s not easy to be in a perpetual kind of conflict, but when you find you have no choice in the matter, and that participation is paramount, what is left to do but PARTICIPATE, regardless of how difficult it may be?

It’s an un-ending struggle, to be different, and that is what Liberals, Progressives, whatever we want to call ourselves need to understand.

Since media is Conservative, to be Liberal is to be Different. Wearing the mantle of “different” just isn’t easy. Ask Jane Hamsher.

Just Get Out, Stay Out, and Be fucking Proud and Loud. No Apologies to Anyone Anytime for What You Know, and What You Are.

Working together is a different story. But you get the big idea…

But that’s ok. People talk about different things all the time and still have a conversation.

Me, I’ve always been different. The out-of-town kid, the brainy loner, the last drunk standing, the ex-military in teh hippie crowd, teh navy nuke in both paisley and plaid. Always the outcast, picked on at school, black sheep of the family, drop out that aces any test. student and teacher, the singer who won’t dance, the performer who never likes an audience.

You’re right. Being different is a constant struggle. And I applaud you for keeping it up, dude. My current one (of many) I can tell you someday if we meet facetoface in some meeting sometime. But really, Life is the struggle.

Many people have not had the internal change of outlook you describe. It is foreign to them, viscerally, I think not necessarily because of sexuality, but because of ‘breaking the rules’. Most just do what they’re told and stay out of trouble. And are too poor to have many other options. You, and I believe, we have had the luxury to see the world differently than many. The luxury, the education, the culture, the encouragement to be able to stand up and say ‘I’m here! Y’all just better deal with it!’ and do it in a way that is individual and thinking and personal all the way down to the cells.

Again I applaud your forthrightness and Pride. Be Your Own Man. And see, I have a drum too and it’s different than yours. And I’m sure that’s ok, too :)
