It’s the first day of Summer so good to know the latest bad news as Republicans try to out strip-mine each other on climate change and Democrats shrug their shoulders while our environment continues to fall apart.
Surface temperatures in the Arctic since 2005 have been higher than for any five-year period since record keeping began in 1880, according to a new report from the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program, an international group within the Arctic Council that monitors the Arctic environment and provides advice on Arctic environmental protection…Temperatures in the Arctic permafrost have risen by up to 3.5 degrees in the past two to three decades
There’s a lot of methane in permafrost which is released as it the temperature rises, which only makes climate change accelerate.
If the current actions contributing to a multifaceted degradation of the world’s oceans aren’t curbed, a mass extinction unlike anything human history has ever seen is coming, an expert panel of scientists warns in an alarming new report.
So awesome, I’m waiting for John McCain to blame immigrants.

About Firedoglake
Someday soon, when we all have to live in a dome, we must kill and eat the global-warming deniers. Otherwise, they will befoul the dome.

You mean the party is over?
Science be damned. Three people have told me within the last couple of weeks that the fires, rains, flooding, bad weather in general is a sign of end times.
And a damn good morning after that lead,
I think of the profit motive as a rabid response to anything by the republicans. Rabies consumes the host after the host passes on the rabid factor. To destroy the world for the last dollar is their wettest dream.
Good morning, pups. It’s Brooks and Nocera today. In “Smart Power Setback” Bobo says discouraging reports about aid in Afghanistan should drive us to consider the deeper forces underlying societal instability. Hint: It’s not always about the material stuff. Well, well, well… It’s dawned on Bobo that there are tribal considerations in Afghanistan. Mr. Nocera, in “Banking’s Moment of Truth,” explains why banks shouldn’t win the fight over capital requirements. But $100 says they will…
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, the cold drinks are in the fridge, and I’ve got toasted Thomas’ English muffins with lots of butter and your favorite jam. The heat warnings have started. Yesterday they warned of the heat index going up to 105° or 110°. No shit — at 7 PM the temperature was 102.4° in the shade at my house. And it’s supposed to be worse today. Maybe I’ll go and add more cold drinks to the fridge… Have a great day.
Interesting..according to the report, the Commission they want to create will be able to basically regulate the high seas regardless of nations…they will be able to levy and fine…etc., plus it creates room for business to implement the Commission’s regulations and investigations.
1779, 1864 and every single summer.
Sorry folks, but it seems a minor ice age is in the offing. Sunspots and such. Now, should I believe global warmers or global coolers? Well, between admissions of collusion from East Anglia and laughable prognostications by the UN, I really don’t care anymore.
Meanwhile the great carbon crisis seems to revolve around the difference in CO2 as .000340 or .000360 of our atmosphere. Whoop-dee-doo. You people need to get a life and quit scaring the children.
I’ve noticed that exactly none of the same people who used the cold weather last winter to deny climate change are now using hot summer weather to accept that it’s happening. Not just wearing blinders but intellectually dishonest.
The U.S. public could care less about mass extinctions. They are a dim and witless lot.
Do you have a link for that or do you, like all conservatives and science deniers just come around and post bullshit that you’re unable to defend?
We are in the midst of a mass extinction that will soon rival the Quarternary extinction event. It’s happening and living with your head in the sand won’t save you or your children.
Excellent job of jamming multiple right-wing talking points into a short post. On a progressive blog. Thanks for playing.
They also assume that mass extinctions will happen to (a) creatures lower on the food chain and (b) furriners. Not us.
They think it’s “mass distinction”.
Margaret, I believe in the science and have no doubt mass extinctions loom on the horizon if they haven’t already started. My point was that much, if not a majority, of the U.S. public could give a rat’s ass. They have their heads so far up the right wing’s posterior they think they are living in Nirvana as they are continually reminded by politicians and the media. If the public cared about anything other than American Idol, professional sports and the smell of a powerful gasoline there would be a revolution on the streets. The planet is “sick” and the U.S. public is the cancer.
And fishin’….they like fishin’. That’s the ticket, no mo fishin’. Nevermind, BP spill didn’t change anything and the Japanese Nuke spill elephant in the Ocean has all but been forgotten…
I didn’t mean yourself when I said “you” and “your”, etc. It was more general. Sorry for being unclear.
Morning, happy summer. At Spiro Mounds, the sun will soon arc over the temple area, Green Mound, and strike Grave Mound One, which will remind the ether that once the sun was favorable toward the chief buried there.
Enjoy your solstice, and here the summer storms have come, it’s entering monsoon season which we’ve been longing for. Cool enough to turn off AC and hear morning birds.
Hey, the storms are already there? We have predictions for rain most of the rest of the week….And do we need it.
Good morning all.
I’ve concluded that rational facts just make them mad. It’s all about domination, and if they dominate a wasteland, it’s okay as long as they’re establishing rule of some sort, any sort.
It started out in the 60′s after a noisy night, and the air coming in the window feels cool and damp. Lovely. Hope it comes there soon.
Politicians and the corporate media are always singing the praises of the “wisdom” of the “public”. When the public is by and large ill-educated with barely an 8th grade reading level they begin to believe the pablum they are fed hence their ignorance and superstition are in fact signs they are geniuses.
The huge amounts the right pours into producing their own story line do pay off. And while we have a high court of wingnuts (who hate women) they’re free to buy the votes.

Unless and until the problem of human overpopulation is confronted nothing we do will really make a difference.

40% of Americans believe Jesus will return in their lifetime. With such forward thinking leaders like this: “History, we’ll all be dead.” Bush sneered to Woodward.
As a species, we’re screwed…just not in my lifetime…so (shrug) why should I care (snark).
And we entrusted our country to the W for 8 years…Molly Ivins tried to tell us….
I always have a link.
New Little Ice Age in store?
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/8578014/New-Little-Ice-Age-in-store.html
And of the contestants at the Miss USA pageant only two admitted to believing in evolution. A nation of American idiots.
Too bad there wasn’t a Molly Ivins warning the country about the current fraud in the WH.
Yes, but it’s preaching to the choir, which has shrunk a bit. . .
The problem remains too many bad things happened over several months around Copenhagen. The public isn’t listening to this now, nor is a critical mass of politicians. I don’t know how that would change with an election cycle coming up. Proving this and disproving that isn’t likely to do much of anything.
Thanks for that link:
Three studies, presented at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society’s solar physics division, all point towards declining sunspot activity into the next decade.
But Joanna Haigh professor of atmospheric physics at Imperial College London, said global warming could override any cooling effect on the Earth’s climate.
She said: “This work suggests that the sun’s activity might be entering a longer period of change – a Grand Minimum, similar to that of the late 17th century.”
However, she cautioned: “Even if the predictions are correct, the effect of global warming will outstrip the sun’s ability to cool even in the coldest scenario.
the Telegraph.
one of the publications that actually publicly apologized for its coverage of this issue.
and referring the the Telegraph, Joe Romm wrote:
but for people like you, that’s not a problem, since you still go there for your information.
It’s all “Greek” to the U.S. public. They just want to know the ball scores and results of America Idol.
the oil and coal companies and the oil kingdoms must employ an army of people to sit around thinking up and promoting these idiotic ideas.
Then there are the unpaid morons that believe the drivel.
