I’ve done my best to remain blissfully unaware of what it is Rep. Anthony Weiner did to get himself in political trouble. But I did note that as soon as the controversy, um, revealed itself, wise voices pointed out a simple way for Weiner to avoid having to leave office as a result — simply, refuse to resign.
It seems like Weiner has taken that advice to heart. From TPMDC today:
Democrats in Washington couldn’t have made it clearer that they want Weiner gone fast. Within minutes of his nationally televised confession on Monday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) called for an ethics investigation and was seconded immediately by DCCC chair Steve Israel (D-NY).… On the Senate side, Harry Reid more or less told Weiner to drop dead, acidly saying his advice to the lawmaker would be to “Call somebody else.” On the other side of the ledger, virtually no Democratic officials have moved to defend him.
But Weiner has stuck to his guns…
… “He’s not going anyplace,” Hank Sheinkopf, a veteran Democratic consultant told TPM. “He’ll do whatever he wants. Generally, New Yorkers tend not to respond to people in Washington. This is their city and they’ll decide — if his constituents want him gone he’ll leave. It’s that simple.”
To some extent, the reactions by Reid and Pelosi are simply the institutional Democrats’ instinctive timidity at work — if they’d been alive during the American Revolution, they’d have responded to Benjamin Franklin’s famous declaration of “We must, indeed, all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately” by thinking, “Well, as long as we get them to hang someone else first, maybe we’ll get through this okay.”
As the New York Times notes, this knee-jerk reflex to surrender is amplified by Weiner’s longstanding endorsement of the opposite approach to politics:
The scandal swirling around [Weiner] has revealed a truth about his personality and his place in the Capitol: He does not care much about those he serves with, and they do not care too much about him.
In a body full of ambitious and egotistical people, Mr. Weiner, 46, stands out for his brash and sometimes even impulsive style. His aggressiveness has served him well, as he has emerged as one of the most visible politicians in New York City and one of his party’s most camera-ready combatants. Liberal cable television seems to love his style, as do many of his constituents.
This contrast, in turn, is why many progressives are trying to build counter-pressure for Weiner to stay in office:
While most of cable news has focused on Weiner death watch, MSNBC host Cenk Uygur has devoted his time to defending Weiner….
Democrats turning on Weiner is “part and parcel of the correct impression that the Democratic party is weak and the Republican party is strong,” Uygur said.
If you can forgive me a brief Friday evening flight of fancy, I’d suggest to Reid and Pelosi that there’s a way for them to play both sides of this controversy successfully. I’ve argued for years (as Jane can verify) that Democrats have suffered from a poor division of labor — they don’t have designated bomb-throwers/”bad cops” to say rude (but true) things in the media, so that more moderate folks can play “good cop” and make the same points while seeming more agreeable.
If Weiner rejects the pressure to resign, Reid and Pelosi can justifiably turn to the world and say, “We tried, but we can’t force him to do what we want.” And from that moment, Weiner is a free man — free to speak impolite truths in whatever attention-getting manner and forum he chooses, enabling his less brave colleagues to accept media invitations to tut-tut his uncouth tone and choice of words… and then gently add, “But he does have a point about…”
Ahh, but who am I kidding? The Democratic leadership is as incapable of this sort of clever kabuki as they are of standing up publicly for progressive principles.

Look, I’m not a prude when it comes to making clever, suggestive puns but there’s simply no challenge in turning “Weiner” into “wiener.” The way I look at it, we’ve no evidence that Weiner actually cheated on his wife, unlike Ensign, Vitter, Gingrich, etc.And even if he did, so what? That’s a private, family affair. If Ted Kennedy could survive Chappaquiddick for 40 years, Weiner can survive this. I just wish everyone would STFU about it.
For some of you tuning in late, the Mrs. and I really have our backs against the wall. Details are here but the abstracts are that last Monday the MA DOR took our rent money right out of the bank and had levyed my checking account so until it goes to arbitration and if we get our money back, we’ll have absolutely no chance of paying our rent for June. We’re wild-eyed with panic right now.
If he were a Third Way DINO like Evan Bayh, people would be falling all over themselves to defend him, from both sides of the aisle.
Oh I’m glad I’m not an Oscar Meyer Weiner
That is what I’d truly hate to beeee
Cause if I was an Oscar Meyer Weiner
They’d use me in erotic fantasies….
SWOPA!
Wow! You’re being generous to Evan Bayh.
Imagine the cajones youd have to have to filibuster 9/11 first responder funds so the rich can get richer by $400 Billion in the middle of a severe recession, then turn around and claim Weiner should quit because he lied about his sex life.
Swopa!
It’s a good thing for the Reprivaticans that Weiner came along. Otherwise they might have to answer questions about their plans to butcher Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.
The English language is too merciful.
How about all three of them go? Nancy, Harry and Weiner? Both Nancy and Harry did such a bang up job hobbling the Democratic party, they can take a flying leap and resign as well. Whoever listens to likes of either of them are delusional. While I loved a lot of what Weiner used to have to say, I have no patience for any of them. They are all corrupted and have no business in the affairs of the American people.
Funny how you can shit in a diaper and pay a prostitute to clean you up while you jerk off and the “mainstream” press won’t say ONE. FUCKING. WORD – if you’re a Republican.
Indeed! The vocabulary is so extensive and multi sourced that puns are ridiculously easy.
I’m up for that! A triple play resignation! Awesome.
Another Perspective: http://www.juancole.com/2011/06/top-things-anthony-weiner-has-said-that-are-worse-than-sexting.html
I didn’t read the details, but it sounds like you are in a very bad situation. Sorry to hear it and best of luck just sounds not good enough. So sorry for your troubles. Hope you have a place to go.
Yep. And didn’t he get a standing ovation from his colleagues? “Comity” forsooth!
Oh, fine, Peggy. Now you have that ditty in my head.
Dinner’s on and I’m going to watch a movie. Catch up in the morning maybe?
I’m almost certain to be there demi.
Great post Swopa. I agree that the Democrats’ response has been shameful. On the other hand Weiner shows the same denial and ignorance in not understanding that the Republicans hope to annihilate every blessed Democrat, in particular the liberals. I heard somewhere several GOPers in the house including Issa had been watching him on Facebook just waiting for this. Paranoia is a miserable state to live in but folks it ain’t paranoia. We are an endangered species and if you walk out into the spotlight you are going to get it full force from the GOP as well as the pussied Democrats.
Hey, Peg, cashed your first paycheck from the new job yet?
If so, bet it felt good. (Even though, as I remember my longer periods of unemployment, the first few checks always left me feeling like there was so much more paying-off and such to do before I would really get my head above water.)
Wow! That sucks ass. I know that feeling very well. I’ll add whatever I can when I’ve got my own bills figured out. Hope things get better for you quickly.
OT/ Margaret, how are you doing?
Very disgusting. Pelosi took impeachment off the table and refused to investigate war crimes and crimes against humanity and now she is acting real tough wanting to investigate a photo of a penis.
The same Pelosi that said in 2006, if you give us majority in both Houses, we’ll end funding the Bush wars. If we’re going after politicians for lying, put Obama and Pelosi at the top of the list.
Heh. Jane was on this topic on Cenk’s show today, and I agree with what she said; that we need a new definition of “obscene” because where’s the outrage (she said “high dudgeon!”) about torture, more wars, etc.
One thing she did not say, but I’ll add; I’m sick of the high-pruderism and therefore the hypocrisy of the MEDIA who is making all this possible.
The same outlets that sell sex so cheaply turn to it so easily to indict and I think that’s bullshit.
Another possible reason for Weiner not to resign is that he’s a cat person. (Didn’t you notice the pix in his apartment, with the two kittehs asleep on the couch?)
Otoh, just saw a comment on a private bulletin board that someone is reporting that one of the recipients of his tawdry emails is only 17. If true, that’s a big oopsie.
Down here in Louisiana we don’t see anything wrong with that.
Yep. I’ve gotten checks for two days, five days and four days, (I don’t get paid for holidays yet), respectively. They owe me for another seven right now. Getting back to my feet…finally!
*heh* Juan was pretty tame, compared to Mondoweiss…
More lies Weiner told us (#9: Jordan River is eastern border of Israel)…
Now reports are out he was in touch with some 17 year old girl. No matter how innocent it was, it’s gonna look bad. Every parent will scream how they don’t want their underage daughters playing with weiner.
Oh you gotta love it. After showing the world his wiener, he gives the dem leadership the finger.
thanks for sharing that. i didn’t know.
Adherents of Leviticus would probably prefer that to some of the alternatives.
I think most of this media/Rethug hyperbol is caused by nothing more than penis envy….
Even Barbara Walters was swooningly impressed….
If true, not a good move for Captain Underpants.
Weiner is a complete AIPAC/Israeli tool…! 8-(
Personally, I’ve never liked him…!
That much is certain.
Weiner’s sin is not lewd pictures but stupidity. We’re talking Palin level stupidity. Is it too much to want a progressive politician with enough simple common sense to understand that he is a public figure whose every move will be watched.
Obviously he has the power psychosis that drives some men into politics and into women’s pants with equal undiscerning force. Power seeking and sex/thrill seeking seem hopelessly entangled in this mean old world… but does it have to be that way?
Weiner is a huge disappointment because he has been unforgivably stupid. Hard to take a man seriously who doesn’t understand how the Twitter works and the implications of being caught trysting there, virtually or actually. Seriously. This is disqualifying stupidity.
I don’t care if NY wants him or not. I just know that I have become a whole lot less interested in anything he has to say, because behind whatever seeming wisdom may leak from his mouth, stands a man who doesn’t have the brains to understand Twitter.
One more thing;
If you thought it was stupid to impeach Clinton over a blow job, but you’re demanding Weiner resign, you might want to check your consistency-meter. It may be broken.
Please can we get beyond the shiny object and move on to what really being done to us behind curtain #3. We little people are F&^%(* move on please.
*heh* I’ll shed no tears if he’s redistricted out of office, tho…! ;-)
hey, oregon. where in oregon are you? there’s going to be a meeting of the pups in portland while i’m visiting. it’s set for the goose hollow inn at 2pm on thursday, june 16th, next week. so far suzanne, teddy, mzchief, starbuck, votus and myself will be there. plus a couple of significant others.
Are you kidding? Democrats using public toilets will have their resignations bombastically demanded next.
Heh. I resign!
Seriously though, all the Overton Shifting and double-standards enforcement are really only possible with the Corp. Tabloid Media. They’re that 3rd leg of the stool and often get left out of the criticism.
A real media comprised of journalism would have halted a lot of the Bush bullshit. They didn’t. They like it.
The Reprivaticans will be sending Larry Craig in as a decoy.
*tap* *tap*
Yeah well, Larry Craig was whoring around a public toilet. I’m talking about *gasp* – urination…
Thanks, I’ll put it my calendar, see if I can make it. I’m in NE pdx.
Honestly, I was just peeing! Seriously! But still, I QUIT!
“Public urination?!?! Hang him!!!”
Well, I’m off to bed. Peace out, y’all!
As much as Weiner’s defenders try to claim those calling for him to resign are either prudes or hypocrites, the issue here is simple: Weiner’s lying and his complete willingness to use his position in government to attack his personal critics.
Weiner has freely admitted he chose to lie to all America to advance his own personal interests.
Even worse, to cover up his behavior he, as a sitting U.S. Congressman, accused those who would expose him – people who in this case were acting to defend the country – of hacking. “Hacking,” sadly enough, is no longer some geeky activity or trivial slur. The U.S. government is moving to declare “hacking” an attack against the United States. This is a very serious charge – and one that was completely false.
So here we have a person who freely admits they will lie to America for their own personal gain, is clearly quite good at and committed to doing it, admits they can’t always control their behavior, and is willing to use his position in Congress to bring the force of the U.S. government against citizens who would expose him when he’s acting against the public interest.
This shouldn’t even be a question.
Letting Weiner sit in Congress is like letting an admitted drug addict work at a pharmacy, or more generously, like letting a narcoleptic be a commercial airline pilot.
This is not a personal criticism. This is merely a question of qualifications, like getting a security clearance. Weiner is, by his own admission, unqualified to exercise the power entrusted to a Congressman.
ffein @ 11 and CTuttle @ 25 both give examples of this behavior in a deadly serious real-world setting, this time in service not to his penis but to a foreign power.
Weiner should resign, and people who are want honesty in government should demand he do so.
Night EDP.
By that standard who are you willing to remain in Congress?
Your answer should be “about 35 of the 435 in the House.”
The story about the 17 year old is just so much blowing smoke. Both the congressman and the girl says nothing inappropriate was ever said, and the parents have said they would press charges if there had.
Past my bedtime. I’m off to sleep.
That would indeed be an admirable goal.
But that’s not the question here, and the poor behavior of others is independent of Weiner’s.
The choice is simple and clear, if one is willing to see it.
Weiner must go.
I’m out too. Oya.
A politician pulling rank and lying??? Say it ain’t so!
And, just for comparison’s sake, and while I’m no friend of AIPAC or Israeli apartheid, just a little factoid here:
There are about 12 million LGBT in the US today.
There are about 7.7 million in Israel.
One shouldn’t be surprised that forced to prioritize, I actually care about fixing what is happening here in the US in terms of equality first.
Wars and US aggression are certainly top of mind for me, but there are 12 million of my kind here that go to priorities for me.
Pleasant dreams, Peg, EDP, and gw…! ;-)
If you can get Vitter to resign, I’ll join you.
But no double standards. I live with too much of that already.
Very good point, and one that I was thinking about when I started writing this post (although it wound up not being part of it).
Yep! And fourteen Asian Americans. 12 million? Just over four percent? I don’t believe it! That closet must be enormous!
I know! Just using an easily available conservative number to make the point.
Fix Shit Here First.
Then we can do something elsewhere. That’s my whole point about bringing all the troops home and so forth. Fix the damn house we live in first, then look around the neighborhood.
We’re terribly bad neighbors, frankly.
Yep. We’re the loud mouthed hoarder with rusted out relics in the yard and dangerous dogs allowed to roam the neighborhood, etc.
Gonna make good on my threat this time. Nighters.
Shine On, You Crazy Diamond! Sleep well.
(And btw – reminder – you owe me an email about next Tuesday.)
If I saw my dong all over the internet I would surely be freaked and really not know what to do. As to Weiner we all know the size of that dong and also know he has balls. Barbara Walter’s was sure impressed.
If his constituents want him that’s it. Time will tell and Fox news is painting him as a pervert and pedophile. Sorry to say it’s a war and now he’s expendable for the cause. I say let him stay and put him on the front lines to attack the Republican’s. Let Republicons call him names and show their hypocrisy.
We are bad neighbors. Hey Kelly!
CE!
No double standards from me. And I know what you mean – there’s a lot of it here, sadly.
And while I found Vitter’s behavior hypocritical and silly (one might go so far as to call his decision to wear diapers “rash”), I find Weiner’s more of a problem. Vitter didn’t defend himself by accusing those outing him of serious crimes, and I also don’t see how a diaper fetish aligns with the interests of many foreign nations (well, maybe Britain).
But “fantasy federal fucked up fetish football” player rankings aside, I believe people who want truth and honesty in government need to make progress every place we can.
Most of all, if we want honesty and integrity in government, we must first start behaving that way ourselves – which means treating everyone equally and doing what integrity demands and telling Weiner to resign.
Almost LLN,
I had a great birthday this Friday. Mr. and MsCE and me dining out at local bistro. Wonderful.
Vitter absolutely committed a crime; payer for prostitution.
Just to be clear; are you not demanding he resign also?
The Third Wave is the Republican wing of the corporate conservative Democratic Party. I don’t care what Weiner did, he stays, end of discussion. No apologies, no explanations, I stand behind him without reservation. I stand behind my friends. When the DSCC and DCCC come calling along for more money, as they always do, and the Obama campaign, I’m going to tell them to “call someone else.” I’ll be hiking the Appalachian Trail.
I know that. I believe using the force of the U.S. government to silence those who would expose one’s behavior is much, much worse than allowing a woman to be in charge of her body and her sexuality. Not all crimes are equal, and the issue here isn’t a criminal one anyway.
I might argue that Vitter was actually far more respectful than most politicians, because he didn’t demand the woman pay him to fuck her. ;-)
Historically I have, in present principle I continue to do so, in choosing today where most effectively to use my limited resources I don’t pursue it actively.
Wow. I didn’t realize I’d slept with them all.
Oh yeah, EV got the magic chopstick….
Hey, it’s a thread about Wieners – so sue me. ;-)
Are you claiming Weiner demanded some sort of payment? Vitter more respectful? You have got to be fucking kidding me.
Weiner !
it’s still funny.
It’s mind-boggling to me that progressives can defend this narcissist and sexual predator. I absolutely believe he scoped out that 17 year old girl and then had phone sex with her. That’s his M.O.
As for what he’s actually done for progressive causes, let’s see: he sponsored anti-cyberstalking legislation that didn’t pass. He’s all bark and no bite.
How soon we forget — or they think we forget. That attitude by the big three of Pelosi, Reid and Obama — that we are too stupid to remember tomorrow the shit they do today — is reason enough to get rid of them and tuck them into the back of a Texas textbook.
Nice try
EV is 90% correct. This isn’t a left-right issue. This about whether you think it’s okay to have a sexual predator serving in Congress.
An upside to this? Howso?
A few days ago I thought Weiner’s issues would deflate and be beaten down by his admirable, belligerent, brute force. Now I’m not so sure, but he certainly should retain the right to stay put if his constituents are supportive.
The only upside, though, is imaginary for some progressives who are habitually delusional about temporary feel-good stuff, and who stubbornly fail to see the big picture. It will be costly going forward.
As long as it involves consenting adults, what do you care? It’s not the sex, it’s the lying. If Vitter lied, then he should go just as Weiner should go for lying. If you defend and protect a politician who lies, you can’t very well get mad when politicians lie. Yes, there are many dishonest politicians in the WH and in Congress and simply because there are many of them is hardly a reason to defend the status quo…lying politicians shouldn’t be acceptable.
So which FDLers wouldn’t mind Weiner contacting their 17yr old daughter? Let’s see a show of hands.
Until this episode, the only ‘news’ I’ve heard about sexting is that it is epidemic in the teen landscape. Should I be extra-upset if she got one from an adult because she presented herself as one? We’d have a serious sit-down about appropriate behavior in general, although this would have been a topic of conversation for years by now.
Wow, I can’t believe the righteous absolutism paired with slippery slope absolvement in so many of the comments. If you’re OK with a politician who broke a law (Vitter paying a prostitute as opposed to Weiner telling lies), then you can’t very well get mad when politicians break other laws.
Also, haven’t seen any responses to Kelly’s@35 mention about whether the puritans in this case also think that Clenis should’ve resigned.
