In a meeting with House Democrats on Thursday, President Obama stressed that his administration would draw a firm line on taxes and revenues both in the deficit- and debt-reduction debates and in the buildup to the 2012 elections.
(…)
“I’ve been very clear about revenues as a part of a balanced package, and I will continue to be,” said Obama.
Underscoring his commitment, Obama noted taxes would be a defining area of contrast with Republicans on the campaign trail. He insisted that he would not compromise again on his position that the tax rates for the top earners be raised to pre-Bush levels.
It’s not that I don’t want Obama to take a hard line on taxes, it’s just that the last time he came out against the Bush tax cuts, he ended up not only extending them, but throwing in a permanent estate tax cut for good measure. He also talked a big game about Gitmo, EFCA, financial reform, government transparency, and the public option, and look how those all turned out.
Obama can say he’ll do the right thing the second time around after initially caving (remember retroactive telecom immunity?) and that’s great, but all I hear is “I promise to stand firm on Progressive Policy Goal X, and I absolutely will not be deterred by anything less than opposition from Republicans and/or conservative Democrats. If they want to stop me, they’re going to have to threaten to filibuster.”
Oh well, it’s not like taxes are at historically low levels, right?

ELI!
BUZZ!
Hey, Eli. If the polls are correct, we will get fooled again. We can’t seem to stop digging.
I was a little torn on video choices…
It’s going to be a choice between bad and worse.
If the perfect is the enemy of the good, does that mean that the crappy is the enemy of the godawful or vice versa?
Oh much better than Shrubya! Yeah go with the get-up-on-your-feet (and I’m being nice) tune. :-)
Unemployment up, Barry wants to raise taxes.
11 dimensional chess again?
I wasn’t sure everyone would get the reference in the title, tho. I tried to rework it to link to the Dubya video, but I just couldn’t get it to flow.
I kinda wanted to post something about Palin’s inane explanation of Paul Revere’s role in the revolution, but I couldn’t think of anything to add to it other than HA HA SARAH PALIN IS INCOHERENT AND STUPID
ELI!
Yeah. Let me know when Elvis gets here.
I understand. Same reason I haven’t used this great video which I think would be a great shovel-out-the-corruption work song/appropriately defiant FDL theme.
Which, really, is not exactly news. Unlike, say, “Barack Obama makes great promises and then does the exact opposite”…
MARGARET!
At some point Charlie Brown just walks away from Lucy and her football.
That’s enough for me!
Really? I’ve never seen him do it…. :-/
Lordi won the Eurovision song contest, didn’t they?
Good evening.
I’m not long for wakey time. But for now, here I is.
I do not merember that. Linky?
It would be cynically easy for a 2nd Term Obama to sign a Tax Cut extension one last time, after all, if he is re-elected, how can the ‘common’ people punish him? By giving him a low approval rating?
If re-elected, for better or for worse we will see the true nature of Mr. Obama; and frankly that thought scares me more then a little.
Well, I mean at some point in the future. Or maybe not.
I picked up Manifest Destiny again tonight. I read about 1/3 of it 6 months ago. Became very repetitive (God is responsible for U.S. greatness; OT rationale right from the Puritan colonist getgo, just like Israel. Rinse. Repeat. Endlessly.)
Turns out that U.S. pols were just as stupid & incoherent as Palin, name your year, for all of U.S. history.
The amazing thing is that USG can tie its shoes, evah.
What does Barack do all day? Does he create jobs? Does he imprison Investment Banksters? Does he conspire in new ways to give Peter Peterson and the Baggers everything they want?
Wikileaks shows Barack does foreign affairs. Barack is interested in helping Haiti. Or he is helping Haitian and US Robber Barons impoverish Haiti more than it is. Barack is powerful. He got the Haitian government to set minimum wage at $0.31/hour-thirty one cents an hour. It had previously been an outrageous $0.61. But Barack got it down to thirty one cents an hour.
What an outstanding corporatist job our taxpayer supported government employees do, keeping wages low in foreign countries.
Barack, you are such a tool.

OK. Got it.
Keep running at the ball on the T, Eli.
Don’t hurt yurself, plz.
They sure did! “Finnish monsters rock Eurovision” (May 21, 2006)

Ha ha { gasp } ha ha. Seems we’ve been faking it for awhile.
Don’t look at me. I started to suspect pretty strongly that Obama would be worthless after the FISA telecom immunity fiasco, and concluded that he was more evil than weak after the public option debacle. And he hasn’t done squat to convince me otherwise.
All that being said, right now he’s still going to win next year because the Republicans have decided that killing Medicare is a political winner.
Reffed that Haiti story twice today. It was also covered as the last segment on democracynow this morning.
Amazing bc that’s exactly what the PTB have in mind for U.S. economy.
Suggested that instead of inauguration, U.S. should have a coronation.
O thinks that sitting in oval office is all he needed to do after coronation.
Renaissance Fair, complete with court jesters, seems like the appropriate metaphor.
You mean, Republicans have decided that [Democrats] killing Medicare is a political winner.
I don’t think Obama or the Democrats have jumped on board Paul Ryan’s Express just yet. If they do, all bets are off.
You ought to read about the counterfeit colonial paper money. Sometimes I’m surprised we didn’t lose the revolution in the first six weeks.
we keep getting fooled again
obama is not a democrat, he’s a corporatist, he does more damage calling himself a democrat so he can posture and then fold
if it were a republican they couldn’t make believe and the voters wouldn’t buy any “I negotiated”
we need a republican in office who is voted as a republican so we can mount a defense against corporate agenda, otherwise obama will continue that agenda un abated
Wonder where those one trillion dollars in spending cuts that Joe Biden has found — and is bragging about — are coming from?
O is gonna win for many reasons. Medicare is the minor one. The major one is that all R candidates are utter fools.
And not to upstage u, but just to keep the record straight, I was against O even before FISA vote.
With NO evidence. (There was plenty; I just wasn’t aware of what it was at the time. Paul Street’s first book details it.)
My nose knows. I’m crappy at identifying solid citizens. (Edwards, Juan Cole even moreso.) But my intuition at picky out flakes is uncannily accurate. And I hated O from before I knew anything about him.
when it comes to obama, the enemy not dressed in sheep clothing is the better choice
we have a trojan horse, a wolf sheep clothing, a mole, errrr
are there other ways to describe that or did I cover it all
So here’s the thing. The other side (Brits) suffered from both hubris and imperial overreach. Sound familiar?
how do I smell?…I would run but I am worse then edwards for the womenz problem…but I’m not married nor has anyone gotten preggers so I guess I am somewhat better
by the way
HI DAWGS!!!!!
busy season for me, working 7 days a week and no time to chat here too often
I think that’s a trillion over ten years, which should not require Medicare cuts.
I’d like to think it’s all coming from the defense budget and winding down the occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq, but what are the odds of that.
Obama can say whatever he wants. He has made very little effort after the initial weak stimulus package on jobs. Do you know anyone who cannot find work? I know plenty. His scrotum-void leadership on jobs is going to cost him the election. Does he even care? He certainly can’t even fake it. Running for election on what? Being a wussie?
Yeah, there were a bunch of people who were disgusted with him before I was, but I was never exactly excited about him. I wanted Gore (Angry Gore, not 2000 Gore) or, sigh, Edwards – not so much because I liked him personally but because I thought his Two Americas narrative was the conversation we needed.
he’s not going to lose the election because the puppeteers want him in office, they get more corporate agenda passed with obama then they could possibly hope if the republican ran as a republican
he’s in for another round
have to hit the pavers, will see everyone manarrow me thinks
btw
I got meself a word written into the urban dictionary, that one on top in bold
Citizen ecnobuzz:
“Unemployment up, Barry wants to raise taxes.”
You fuckin’ betcha!! Tax the fuck outta the banksters and repeal all the depletion allowances and put a confiscatory, one-time excise tax on the oil cowboys. You betcher sweet ass we should tax ‘em in this time of high unemployment and massive consolidation of capital that has resulted from it!! How ’bout THEM apples??!!!
…Palin’s inane explanation of Paul Revere’s role….
Oh, this calls for much more serious mocking.
Everybody knows that Paul Revere really rode to Plymouth Rock in Vermont to warn those aboard the incoming Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria that the sushi in San Francisco was really shitty that week….
I like those apples and usually I only like first harvest macentosh
Unfortunately, it would probably be more accurate to say that Barry *says* he wants to raise taxes…
“The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming!”
You’re not running for office, so not on anyone’s radar.
JAYT!!!!
I MISS you, haven’t been around much meself and have to go now, hope to see you round
am 2
I readily admit I’ve given up on Obama and I have ZERO interest in re-electing him in 2012. The one caveat to my defeatist view though, I think we may want to impress upon our representatives in Congress that they need to stand aside and stop supporting Obama. They only do themselves a disservice by doing anything he wants. If they already have a (D) by their name, they are already in the hole, but it is imperative that they start talking the talk (if not walking the walk) if they want to get re-elected.
Obama’s fate will be the same for the vast majority of any representative that shares his party affiliation. They will be judged by Obama’s actions next time elections come around. Based on the unemployment numbers, it isn’t like things are going to get better and make us forget where we are headed.
Outstanding!
she is the snot heard ’round the world.
have a good one perris
I think a lot of them are “progressive” in much the same way that Obama is, unfortunately.
I wonder what their definition of a progressive would be. I don’t think it’s the same as mine.
It’s probably similar to Lanny Davis’s definition of “liberal Democrat”…
There’s gotta be a way to make Obama the pathetic one-termer he deserves to be.
“Shout” – Tears For Fears (live, Antwerp, Belgium, 2006)
If you haven’t done so, I’d suggest visiting Dan Carlin’s Common Sense site and listening to his most recent episode. He did a really awesome job discussing the New Yorker article on the NSA eavesdropping on private citizens. It is an hour podcast, but it goes by quickly.

Night all.
Niters eCAHN and eConstance. :-)
That’s because only the Tea Party has the guts to challenge the status quo.
God, I hate how logical that is. Replacing Obama with an R so we can at least challenge the corporatism. I can’t believe that’s where we’re at. Depressing, to say the least.
I think it is clear that when OB set up the deal with the goopers on unemployment compensation and the tax cuts being extended, he wanted the expiration to come in 2012, SO IT WOULD BE the key or a key issue in the election campaign.
He he will waiver on this.
Yep, that’s what it looked like to me. “Gee, I really *wanted* to let those tax cuts expire, but we have this election to win…”
Plus with a Republican majority in the House and only a slim Democratic majority in the Senate, the *only* way to let the tax cuts for the rich expire is to let *all* the Bush tax cuts expire. And he’d have to stick his neck out to veto any extension Congress sends him.
Bwahahahaha!
The Tea-Party is just as much status-quo as the rest of them. Or hadn’t you noticed that they’re running the GOP?
You put up your marker, Eli.
But the election is going to about the tax cuts. Americans will vote in tax cuts for the rich, or they won’t.
It’s a phrase. “Things you say to get Elected”.
I ready to solve the puzzle Pat.
you smile and move your lips
Zero chance.
Pretty much Obama’s entire re-election strategy is to be the “reasonable” moderate in the center. Sure, on occasion he will still blow some smoke up our collective asses that might make him sound progressive-ish (and without a doubt his promise on tax rates is pure smoke), but by and large his strategy is to be the non-partisan, village approved, wall-street sponsored tool that he is. Unfortunately, this prevents him from going toe-to-toe with the cons over the debt ceiling (or really any issue of import, can’t offend the idiot swing voters), so rightward we drift… straight over the cliff and into the abyss, I’m afraid.
Spot on – indeed protecting the tax cuts for under 250,000 folks is number one on the excuse for not taxing the rich.. – not even funny any more – just sad.
The logic of letting it all expire – going back to Clinton rates, and then passing a child credit increase to 2010 level, and a “marriage adjustment”, and a 10% bracket via tax credits rather than a new tax rate (indeed one can do this for all the rates so we can keep an effective max marginal rate of 25% for those under 250000) along with revising and then indexing the AMT deductions and credits – seems obvious – but the talking heads on TV do not discuss solutions. But Obama’s rich and corporate handlers do not want real solutions and certainly do not want to change the conversation from Club for Growth approved marginal rates to “effective rates” (total tax paid divided total income) where we have one of the lowest effective tax rates in the world. The media is only into he said/she said, who is winning, and promoting the latest GOP thought as the “adult analysis of a real problem”.
Obama is undoubtedly the most dangerous President we’ve ever had. At least with Bush you could clearly tell he was a drooling idiot when he opened his mouth. Obama has his bullshit intellectual game down pat.
the lesser of 2 evils is still evil.
Actually Obama has very very strong re-election cred: he allegedly snuffed bin Laden virtually single-handed on his order; he allowed full-faith and complete disclosure of his alleged birth certificate; and it was on his alleged watch that the world didn’t end on May 21.
Republicans and other challengers, what do you got?
You could add all the less favorable things he did to your list of accomplishments. I don’t think it is as much as what he did (or allowed to happen), but what he didn’t do that will be his downfall. The continued erosion of our civil liberties, snuffing out whistleblowers, getting us firmly involved in another war without so much as getting Congress’s approval. Let’s not even talk about the horror that was health care or how he didn’t allow the government to go after Bush for war crimes.
He has been a disappointment through and through. I don’t see how anyone in their right man could vote for that man.
Meanwhile, those of us f***ing retards keep watching, anticipating that mighty kick that never comes. It gets pretty dizzying after a while.
i going third party but i live in Texas, so it won’t matter, my vote hasn’t meant any thing down here in a long time…. O is a chicken shit, at least Clinton had a part of a set of balls, o has none…..
I don’t see any real difference between Palin and Obama. They both are committed liars and will manipulate reality to promote whatever fantasy they think will help them remain popular.
just look at the group you’re working on, and subtract the ones you don’t like.
At this time Obama’s job #1 is to get re-elected in 2012 rather than to obstinately stand on stated principle, and risk losing that way. So some disconnects between ideology and action are bound to surface. It’s always the case moving toward a second term, but this time around it’s quite stark.
It’s especially tough for Obama because the partisan gulf nowadays is so deep. Trying to appease 51% of the voters will surely cost him the Senate, anger his base, and probably won’t work anyway.
I think he needs to dig in his heels a bit, rework his bloodless personna, but chuck out the histrionics for sure. The center may not be so ripe for the picking as the left comfortably assumes, but there may be ways to lure them in. They’re not lemmings waiting for orders, though.
for progressives, obama is a Trojan Horse. His mission is to destroy the New Deal and eliminate any obstacles to maintaining and enhancing the total absolute corrupt empowerment of the plutocrats. The lefty fools that still support him are…fools.
obama has done far worse than not “stand on stated principles” (presumably that implies left/progressive principles.) obama has in every instance, every challenge worked to undermine left/principles and successfully helped republicans in their ceaseless efforts to undermine left/progressives principles. obama has done so to such an extreme extent that left/principles, policies, and ideas are not in anyway even in the discussion – they are automatically dismissed if they’re even mentioned.
I think you underestimate the centers acceptance of the status quo – as does Obama. Every, and I do mean every election since 2004 has been driven by change. This isn’t working change it. The center doesn’t like the way things are going and are expressing it very clearly.
pleuge @ 80– i like ….Obama is a Trojan horse.
Obama is a liar, same a bush
Heres a budget Obama is completely against

Barack Obama has no credibility and nothing he says is to be believed. Barring any actually display of a spine, from this point on Barack Obama should be regarded as a fraudulent flim-flam man – just like Bill
clinton the NAFTA king. Interestingly enough, President Obama wants to enact more NAFTA-style trade deals just like Bill the Closet Republican. Pretty ironic given the whole Barack Obama vs. Hillary Clinton battle in the 2008 Primaries
It seems that Barack Obama is just as willing to spit upon working people as Bill and Hillary Clinton are.
