With US-Pakistan relations strained over the US mission that killed Osama Bin Laden and the push by many in Congress to accelerate withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan in the wake of Bin Laden’s death, Senator John Kerry (D-MA) finds himself at the nexus of these two vital issues. Recall that Kerry was one of a number of US elected officials who visited Pakistan during the Raymond Davis saga, claiming that he felt his visit would achieve Davis’ release “within the next few days” after his visit. Davis was eventually released four weeks after the Kerry trip. Today, we see Kerry featured prominently in the news for his plan to visit Pakistan again in an attempt to repair damage to US-Pakistan relations arising from the Bin Laden mission and for his statements suggesting that a new Afghanistan strategy is now needed.

It seems that the Wisconsin State Journal, which first reported on this, now leads on the article linked in my story with a huge caveat.

AG Settlement Just About Cashed, As Principal Reductions Exit the Picture |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday May 10, 2011 5:16 pm |
Whatever shallow hopes remaining that the 50-state Attorney General investigation into foreclosure fraud would yield anything meaningful has been dashed by this leak of the latest settlement terms, which eliminate mandated principal reductions as a penalty.
Once again, we’re going to have to look elsewhere for justice and accountability in foreclosure fraud.

The Obama Administration was gung ho to brag about the GM IPO last year. But if I’m not mistaken, this is the first time the White House has bragged nationally about jobs created thanks to the auto bailout.
Democrats Unleash Plan to Cancel Big Oil Tax Subsidies |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday May 10, 2011 3:53 pm |
Democrats unveiled their legislation to repeal Big Oil tax subsidies today, giving the high-profile legislation to three Senators with elections next year in tough states (Claire McCaskill, Sherrod Brown and Jon Tester) along with Bob Menendez, who appears to be the point person on oil-related issues in the caucus. Given that he was so successful in getting the oil spill liability cap lifted- oh wait, he didn’t, and I suspect that this legislation will end up somewhere on the same shelf with that one.
