The government’s making outrageous secrecy claims again, this time in the Thomas Drake NSA leak case.

Rarely do you see such a strong statement from the Ethics Committee against one of their own, let alone a referral to the Justice Department for criminal prosecution.
Health Insurance Excise Tax Headed for Failure: Premiums Rise Despite Employees Paying More |
| By: Jon Walker Thursday May 12, 2011 12:35 pm |
The excise tax, by only accelerating this cost-shifting trend that, for the past several years, has so far failed to control cost, won’t bend the cost curve.

| By: David Dayen Thursday May 12, 2011 11:45 am |
President Obama announced that he would prefer FBI Director Robert Mueller to stay on for an additional two years beyond the 10-year term he has already served. Mueller, who became director of the FBI one week before 9-11, would see his term otherwise expire September 4.

Moving to the Left? Budget Debate Just Moving to a Bad Outcome |
| By: David Dayen Thursday May 12, 2011 9:36 am |
If you think that this is a good time, with the initial jobless rate rising and the economy fragile, to suck hundreds of billions of dollars annually out of the economy, then sure, this may be good news. Tax increases are favorable to spending cuts from the standpoint of economic multipliers, and a balanced solution favorable to one weighted entirely on cuts. I hear that Conrad’s budget includes a millionaire’s surtax, which of all these ideas is the least obtrusive, because you’re dealing with money that is otherwise lying fallow in a trust fund.
Japan Nuclear Disaster Update: TEPCO Finds Hole, Leak in Unit 1 Reactor Vessel |
| By: Scarecrow Thursday May 12, 2011 8:45 am |
Ever since the Japan earthquake and tsunami disabled the cooling systems at Units 1-4 of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear plant, each of those units has been suffering significant leaks of radioactive water through various but mostly unconfirmed sources. Those leaks could be in the cooling system pipes, damaged valves and pumps, or even related condenser equipment in adjacent turbine buildings.
More ominous would be leaks from the containment structure or pressure suppression pool, and worst of all would be leaks directly from the reactor vessel that holds the damaged, partially melted fuel core.
News reports this morning are now confirming there is a major leak from a hole, likely “several centimeters” in diameter, in the reactor vessel at Unit 1. The utility, TEPCO, discovered the leak/hole in the reactor vessel after making repairs on a related gauge.
John McCain: KSM Lied Under Torture, Just Like I Did |
| By: emptywheel Thursday May 12, 2011 7:50 am |
John McCain has, on balance, a good op-ed in the Washigton Post refuting Michael Mukasey’s embrace of torture. McCain’s larger point is that our approach to the Arab Spring will have a key role in our ability to defeat terrorists, which is a point not being made vociferously enough.
Landrieu, Begich Defend Big Oil Subsidies |
| By: David Dayen Thursday May 12, 2011 6:55 am |
It was inevitable that oil-producing states would get representation like this. And yet every state is a gas-consumer state. Every state is a taxpayer state. Every state has constituents who give their money to the government so a sliver of it can be handed over to the same billionaires who charge $4 a gallon for gasoline. And these billionaires are the same people who think being denied that corporate welfare is actually un-American.
Making Guantanamo Permanent, and Other Portents |
| By: Jeff Kaye Thursday May 12, 2011 6:00 am |
A motley crew of Senate Republicans, joined by Sen. Lieberman, have introduced a bill to make Guantanamo a permanent “terrorist” prison. Once upon a time, this could have been dismissed as GOP posturing. But recent events suggest this is more likely a harbinger of the future fate of the US Naval prison, as President Obama has already pronounced that he will support indefinite detention of prisoners based on unchallenged U.S. executive fiat.
