Ohio Activists Gather 200,000-Plus Signatures in a Month to Repeal Anti-Union Law

By: David Dayen Friday May 20, 2011 1:15 pm

The passage of SB5 in Ohio triggered a 90-day period where opponents could gather signatures to force a referendum, a “citizen veto” of the law, in November. The law does not take effect until the results of that referendum. Labor and progressive activists immediately went to work to try to overturn the law, which would severely limit collective bargaining rights in the state, eliminate the right to strike and even hit public safety positions like police and firefighters.

Karl Rove, Bankster Bailer

By: emptywheel Friday May 20, 2011 12:30 pm

I’m not surprised that Karl Rove has weighed in on the foreclosure fraud scandal with an erroneous op-ed in the WSJ. I’m just a bit baffled why he did so now.

Trumka Wants “Independent” Labor Movement, Divorced from Party

By: David Dayen Friday May 20, 2011 11:45 am

It’s practically a rite of passage for a labor leader to stress their independence from the Democratic Party. In the end, the alarm bells almost always go off, and labor runs back into the waiting arms of the Democrats. Not to mention that labor is intimately intertwined with the Democratic Party. They have seats on the DNC, fercryinoutloud. So will this time be any different?

Libya, Day 60: Congress as Much to Blame for Lack of War Powers Resolution

By: David Dayen Friday May 20, 2011 8:40 am

Today marks the 60th day of US operations in Libya. Under the War Powers resolution, this should trigger a Congressional authorization for the war. The idea that the President could unilaterally attack in Libya, a country that did not threaten the United States, is dubious in its own right. But the War Powers resolution is pretty clear that after the 60-day period, the executive must come to Congress.

Gallup: For First Time, Majority Supports Marriage Equality

By: Jon Walker Friday May 20, 2011 7:45 am

For the first time since Gallup has been polling the issue the pollster has found a clear majority of Americans now favor a law recognizing same-sex marriage.

Congress Could Use Reconciliation Process for Deficit “Grand Bargain”

By: David Dayen Friday May 20, 2011 6:53 am

There’s your real reason for the delay. A reconciliation bill would only need 50 votes. There’s nothing untoward about this; in fact, reconciliation was built for deficit reduction. Of course, the House would have to comply with this as well, but seeing that this makes any deal much easier to implement, I assume they’d go along with a reconciliation strategy. So this makes any bill harder for liberal Democrats to stop. Harder for Tea Party Republicans as well, but in the Senate that’s not big enough a faction.

Early Morning Swim: Ryan Plan Wreaking Havoc on GOP, Reports Rachel Maddow [VID]

I’m sure the Democrats will figure out a way to screw it up by introducing their own Medicare-killing bill.
