It’s Memorial Day, where I wander around the neighborhood collecting cheezburgers.
Memorial Day’s always been a conflicted holiday for me. A day dedicated to honoring those killed in action defending the country, and yet it’s the first big outdoor bash of the summer season. Growing up, ’twas opening day of the swimming pool, and just about the last day of school – happy excitement. Huge contrast to the death and destruction of wars. TROOPS.HOME.NOW.

About Firedoglake
Good morning, pups. It’s Dowd, Friedman and Kristof this morning, and they’re all out of the country. MoDo, in “For Office Civility, Cherchez la Femme,” has a question: Can a woman who made it in a man’s world go to a man’s world and make it safe for women? She’s developed a schoolgirl crush on Christine Lagarde, who’s poised to take over running the IMF. The Moustache of Wisdom, in “Pay Attention,” says the Egyptian revolution is not over. It is now in the utterly vital phase of deciding who gets to write the rules for the new government. Mr. Kristof, in “Slums Into Malls,” says watch out, China: With its liberated news media and booming economy, India could nibble your lunch.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got French toast made with challah and a bit of cinnamon. On disadvantage of being an early riser by necessity is that even with the alarm clock turned off I still pop up like a piece of toast at 6:00. But of course, I can always go back and take a nap… Have a great day.
You, too. Have a good one. Ive got the same habit: pop up. Why? Greet the day, I guess.
Good morning. Today’s agenda is fence-painting so I’ll miss all the Sunday talking heads.
Good morning all,
I’ll learn more in the garden than I would watching the Sunday morning drivel drizzle.
Good Morning!
Agree. If not the garden, then the skyline, books, or the net.
Elliot,
The pic is touching. Very nice for those of us that have had vets in our families.
And I just like to say:
STOP THE WARS! Why have more lost souls to memoralize over oil and gain?
Looks like this was the day for a sleep-in…not a bad idea.
Well Kuroneko has decided that normal wake up time is 5:30 because that’s the time I get up during the week. After I placated the queen, I was able to get a few more winks.
The politicians say they “support” the troops but in reality they just love war.
Good Morning, Elliot and Ladies
I woke up with a little sinus headache to discover mother nature is watering my yard for me. Prolly a little coffee will help.
On edit: I see Bluetoe’s here, so I’ll add …and gentleman to that good morning.
Might want to listen to Jesse Jackson’s “Keep Hope Alive” today. His call in show is on how vets are treated in Obama’s Amerika.

Morning Demi and all FDL pups.
Good morning to everyone. IT’S NOT RAINING! (It’s not “sunning” yet, but maybe…?)
I got up for a trip to the loo at 6:30 a.m., decided it was too early, and crawled back in and amazingly, went back to sleep. But I had the most bizarre dream. I think I should have just stayed up at 6:30!
Good morning. I’m going to go out and break the newest “law” that gets you arrested…so I’ll just go out and “dance” in all the public places I can. :)
Bizarre you say? It’s hard to understand how our subconscious minds work, isn’t it? If you were to turn on the Sunday morning talking heads, it would be more nightmares.
Good for you…I had a similar visit…and I really must cut some nails. Wow.
What new law bans Dancing In The Streets? I must have missed that. Tell me about it?
And John McCain still shows up…Just amazing.
Here ya go:
http://networkedblogs.com/isguO
Dancing is illegal now? OMG! What are people going to do if they take that singing and dancing off of tv?
Oh, good grief. The next thing you know, they’ll ban singing and lighting candles. (Thanks, lsls)
Wow! I had a bizarre dream when I went back to sleep too. I was loading paper with Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson. No idea why. I haven’t seen a movie with him in it in literally years.
Margaret,
I miss you during the day. However, I’m so happy you have income. Hope it continues to work for you.
Be careful. I understand that networkedblogs makes you display your private Facebook information. Avoid those sites like the plague!
And while you’re at it, read this and maybe change your passwords! There’s a helpful video about how to construct a safe password.
The top 50 passwords you should never use
Sorry, way OT, but it’s on my mind this morning!
Just the thought of his face and smug attitude gives me a stronger headache. Why, oh why, is still on tb?
This one was really strange, involved a person I knew but not very well, needing a ride, taking a trip, cleaning a mess in the bathroom, all juxtaposed. And minutes after waking up, I can’t remember WHO the person in my dream was.
Maybe I need more tea!
I was thinking you must be sleeping much better these days…NIce.
ACK. I skipped right over that. Thanks (not) for mentioning it. I think I got distracted by the “Mitch Daniels” name at the top of the list.
Thanks. Yep, it sucks not being around as much but I wouldn’t have been around at all without the job!
Maybe the shows have become so scripted that they just have to take whoever will show up…Liz Cheney comes to mind.
I’ve been having some weird dreams lately, too. Don’t the shrinks usually ask How did you Feel in the dream? Maybe you’re feeling empowered lately?
I’ve heard the theory that everyone in our dreams is actually us. That’s more free shrink advice. I feel like Lucy. Nickel?
I had a concussion some years ago, and it was years before I started dreaming again…who knows about the brain?
Wow. That’s interesting. Did you notice feeling different during the time that you weren’t dreaming?
Actually, I was very much in this dream, giving the ride, cleaning the bathroom (where the mess got worse the more I looked at it). It is so weird that I can’t remember the other person’s name at all now.
Not after I was mostly mended, except I did miss dreaming…seemed odd.
(where the mess got worse the more I looked at it).
That’s a perfect description of watching and reading the news we have today, I think.
I didn’t count noses, but it seems there are a LOT of Republicans on again this week. Since the disparity between R and D guests was called out last week in a number of places, I would think maybe the bookers would be slightly more careful for awhile.
Not that there’s any huge difference between the two, mind you…
My private FB information is so boring. I’m not afraid of any of these people. I don’t buy things online. I don’t post anything political on FB…I do get some though. :)
Great observation, demi. I won’t go into what the “mess” was, but you can guess given its location, and it sure fits the news (or the political climate, or this country, or…)
I buy nearly everything online, where it is often much cheaper, so I am very careful of what I display or share.
EDIT: I also post political stuff on FB, but I try to keep it to a reasonable amount and I avoid political rants. I don’t want to see it on FB, so I try not to inflict it on others unduly.
Yes, too bad if they are interchangeable….Not good, huh?
TX just passed a bill that cuts lots from education and health care; waiting for Big Hair Rick to sign it….no surrpises there, I’ll bet.
Yes..I would be careful in that case for sure! Mr. LS does though.
Meanwhile he’s begging for Federal money. He’s such a hypocrite. He has a big skeleton that won’t hunt in any major election.
Ha, ha. It’s all a bunch of crap, for sure. You surely have a vivid and visual subconscious.
Same here. I don’t think there’s anything personal in my fb thing, but I don’t buy anything on line. Mr. Demi does, but he doesn’t have a fb page.
No Newt is good Newt.
Do you ever get my postings? I mostly post flowers or stuff like that. LOL
And I’ve seen rumblings that he is going to run for President. Somehow I wonder how he’s gonna square that with threatening secession? Of course, logic was never these guys’ long suit.
I actually don’t dream often, that I am aware of, but this one was a doozy and I only was back asleep for about an hour. I wonder what my subconscious was up to?
Are we fb book friends? I don’t go there very much. Mostly to keep up with my kids. Photos etc.
Yeah agreed. I wonder if Newtie will keep campaigning. Even the Goopers hate him. I think if I were him I would crawl into a hole and pull it in over me.
Yes. L…S…
I was told that I had to be on FB if I wanted to keep up with my older grandkids, because “that’s where they are.”
Anything particular? We had a good commentary about the negatives, such as the secess. thing + a TeaBagger affinity + the not good image/memory of a TX gov as Pres…Guess what that mean?
I actually had a similar thing happen this morning.
A “personal” hypocritical issue.
You’re probably dreaming but don’t remember them. Mr. Demi is the same way, and you both have IT backgrounds. Hmmmmmm.
Maybe your subconscious is “purging”?
Oh, Im assuming an “arnold” thing…;)
I’ll look you up.
Uh..worse politically, but in that genre.
I talk to my daughter about once a week, but I get to see her posted photos there. She just spend a week at Disney World in Florida and posted a bunch. My cute kid. :)
Ohh, I may have heard that…I admire your discretion…;)
Is anyone celebrating the Indy 500? Yawn…what’s this stuff about? ;)
I have read a bit about dreams (long ago, got interested for some reason) and I seem to recall that most people don’t remember their dreams after they wake up, especially dreams in the middle of the night. And I think it is during REM sleep that we dream, and depending on where that falls in the sleep cycle we may not recall what we’ve dreamed.
But yeah, maybe I am just flushing my cache. LOL.
I bought a brand new $55 cast iron skillet for $8 bucks at an estate sale yesterday. Woot! :)
I’ve always heard that if you dream about “some thing” as a subject…you reverse your thinking when awake and be the “thing” and look at your dream from that perspective…i.e., that every thing in your dreams are aspects of yourself…sort of, if you dream about a box that is tied up, be the box and talk from that angle…i.e., I feel like a square box..all tied up..etc.
My daughter-in-law is Executive Director of the Indiana Autism Society and she posted on FB that the IAS has a booth/stand/whatever along the route and is selling brats, hamburgers, beer, red bull, etc.
Now that’s interesting…Good Luck to them…Thanks
Interesting. I’ve never heard that. But I do know that usually I can trace something in the dream back to a “trigger” in my recent awake day. This one, I can’t, and the identity of the young man in the dream vanished when I woke up, although I do know that it is an acquaintance, probably a former coworker.
Yeah it is interesting! My grandson (her middle child; she’s my son’s second wife) has autism and that’s how she originally became involved, and now that’s her job and her passion.
I love a good bargain. I bought a beautiful hand painted platter at the thrift store for $3.98. Made in Mexico with dark, vibrant blue, reds and yellows. The clerk who checked me out said it looked like one she had just seen in a museum at Olvera Street.
Cool! I was actually looking for something like that yesterday. I also bought a Murray 5.0 big wheel lawnmower that started on the first pull…$10.00…Score! So much fun…hee hee
Kudos to her. There is much more awareness of autism these days. I still haven’t watched Temple Grand yet. My son is not interested, at all, in reading any books or watching any movies about it. He said Mom, I live it. I know it.
Score, indeed. I like looking for silver or brass items that are priced as low as $1.98.
And, speaking of silver, I went out to the drug store last night looking for silver polish. I have a huge solid silver tray that I’d like to bring back to life. They didn’t carry any polish, so I’ll have to go shopping today, if I want to work on that.
You should watch Temple Grandin for sure. She is amazing. I guess I can understand why your son is not interested, although it might give him (if he needs it) an idea of what he might be able to accomplish. My grandson is only 8, so he wouldn’t understand any of it yet.
Did you ever read House Rules? I thought you said you were going to. Jodi Picoult has a new one, which I’ve read, called “Sing You Home” that is excellent.
I have been avoiding garage and estate sales like the plague. I love them, I used to go to garage sales a lot, but I do not need to bring one more thing into this house!!
Just wrote those titles down on my board. Some day…
I had a ridiculous polish shopping experience….hard to find or really huge bottles….Good luck; Ill be interested.
I hear you. But, it’s so fun! I did take a large box of books and two boxes of clothes to MEND the other day. So….garbage in, garbage out. To continue the computer references. *g*
And maybe his signature on a Major cut education bill he won’t look so good.
I might have to resort to home remedies, like baking soda and aluminum.
Definitely.
And jewelry stores may have a smaller bottle…don’t know.
Tooth paste (white)..soft sponge..soft cloth
House Rules is the one about the boy with autism. Sing You Home is about a divorced woman who realizes she is lesbian, and a conflict with her ex husband about using her fertilized eggs from failed IVF procedures to have a baby with her partner.
Jodi Picoult always takes a “condition” (often a medical affliction) and then creates a novel around it, using the condition to examine the characters’ reaction to it. I have never read a bad Jodi Picoult novel, and I’ve read most of them.
They did have a bottle of liquid something to clean sterling silver jewelry. I might try that.
Uh, oh, the mister is watching an interview with Tom Coburn, and he just said out loud, Oh, fuck you Tom. Fuck you and your flat taxes.
Maybe I should go make a nice breakfast. ???
Your local grocery probably has silver polish back with the detergents and such.
I’ll try that before I put the money out for the store stuff. Couldn’t hoit.
I have to go out and get more doggy food, so I’ll look.
I’ll compare the price to a tube of white tooth paste. Thanks all for the suggestions. It’s a really beautiful tray. Large and very heavy, with detailed scroll work.
But wouldn’t you need so much toothpaste that it would wind up being a very expensive cleaner? I have a big jar of Wright’s Siver Cream that comes with its own sponge for $3.39. Not sure when I bought it, but not recently so it probably costs more now. Toothpaste isn’t cheap, and if it is a large platter, well…
Oh, this conversation is so much more fun that sitting and swearing at Tom. Ha.
I made several trips to Salvation Army when I was cleaning out after my retirement. Clothes and housewares and such. Haven’t given away any books, but I should. There are Better World Book drop bins all over town. But I think maybe Friends of the Library is a better choice for donations.
You could be right about that. I use the Wright’s too, and it lasts forever…
Yeah, but I think it’s pretty much just the three or four of us chatting, and everyone else has either moved to another thread or gotten on with their day, which I need to do. Watching the weather, since there’s a neighborhood bike ride scheduled for 1:00, and the forecast has t-storms in it.
Have a good day, everyone.
I lost all of my “stuff” in a flood in 2001…I now have just as much “other” stuff. LOL
You too!
So, two Texans, a Hoosier and a Valley girl walk into a morning blog….
And I think Half-Price is collecting for Alabama libraries that were hit….don’t know the detail.s
Hahahaha
Oh, I hope you can a a wonderful bike ride. Sounds like fun.
Love you.
That’s a wonderful idea.
Love you too, you know.
My fondness for you has no bounds.
I think I’ll get that breakfast going and then go get the polish and wipe, wipe, wipe while I watch some movies. It’s still raining.
Laters.
That is priceless, demi. I am gonna remember that!!
Now I am outta here fer realz. It’s 10:30 a.m. here in Hoosierland.
You too. Don’t forget to check your FB…I sent you my linky in “message”.
PS…I’ll just mention Jane Austin here. Because I can.
I guess I’ll go work on the barn…lata
Morning All!
demi, toothpastes can have grits added, for a valued item I recommend going with a polish specifically formulated for cleaning silver.
Demi, Elliott is right!
Well, ladies…what a lovely morning coffee time. Take care.
Thanks, Elliot.
And, I have one cheeseburger left from last night. It’s yours.
If I were ever to win the lottery, the first thing I would do is arrange a meet up for all my girlfriends at the Lake. Wouldn’t that be a blast?
Fareed asks Fedguy: was Greenspan a total F-up on the interest rates? [my paraphrase]
Fedguy: “We erred.”
No sh*t.
Back to read comments and flip Elliott’s bisonburger….
mMm thanks
Yes, that would be a blast.
*waving*
Elliot, please when you refer to those who are receipients of the Medal of Honor do not use the term winners. Winners are people who win the lottery.
My reason for asking is best summed up in the citations such as those at: http://www.history.army.mil/moh.html
Thank you
An old soldier.
ooo! thanks
good point
Waving back Elliott!!
