I have bad news for all of you election/schadenfreude junkies out there… like all good things, Newt Gingrich Humiliation Week is drawing to a close. Yes, there may be a few last sparks from whatever Sunday talkfest Newt is gracing with his presence this weekend, and he’ll continue trudging through the small towns of New Hampshire and other early primary/caucus states next week. Between the media’s gnat-like attention span and a presumed (if woefully late) improvement in message discipline by Gingrich and his press secretary, though, most of the fun probably has already been had.
The good news, however, is that starting Monday, it will be Tim Pawlenty‘s turn in the barrel… with Michelle Bachmann lining up a possible announcement toward the end of the week, and Jon Huntsman claiming dibs for sometime in June.
It’s downright considerate for the Republican presidential wannabes to present themselves to the public like this — one after the other, close together but evenly spaced like… um, well, like the revolving ducks in a shooting gallery.
Which probably isn’t how they envisioned it, of course. Given the amount of hubris involved in thinking one has a shot at the White House, the candidates and their staffs likely imagine it as more like scheduling the big opening weekend of a Hollywood movie. You know, the kind of thing where you want to have the spotlight of public attention all to yourself.
Unfortunately, running for the GOP presidential nod isn’t quite like that. It means subjecting yourself to the crossfire of multiple litmus tests, struggling to differentiate yourself from your competitors even as you all pander to the same interest groups, practicing your dog-whistle techniques… in short, advertising your unlimited affection for the fiercest lunacies of your party’s base (a group with more collective resentments than common sense) while trying to simultaneously hide it from any sane voters who may be watching.
No wonder it goes so badly for so many of them.

About Firedoglake
I confess, I really really enjoyed this week
I hope left leaning people get a chance to ask Oblahblah some good questions on the trail.
They are both from the same state a poll of likely GOP primary voters from that state could mess up Tim as Michelle seems to have a lock on the Fundy vote as long as Sarah is out.
2 Evitias split the Tea Bagger/ Fundy vote so a Corporate GOPer can win. But only if we assume the Evitias are equal but in Minnesota would even Sarah beat Michele?
How can Tim run if he comes in second in his home state to Michelle in the polls?
More importantly how can Tim get fund raising or even be considered for VP if he comes in second?
SWOPA!
While I had the best week I’ve had for years. Now I know how to make sure my luck is good: make sure Newtie is miserable.
Aloha, Swopa…! Another outstanding post…! ;-)
The GOP planted the wind and now reaps the whirl wind:) The Fundies won’t so up for election day unless they get someone who can deliver the hate with Trump gone and Newt humbled Mitt, Tim etc can’t deliver the hate.
The GOP primary is a Rock Concert an emotional experience a Cult of Personality a last minute change from Death Metal to John Denver (I like john Denver) is going to cause the stadium to refund a bunch of tickets.
Now seems like the time to throw down with Trumka and let everyone know that progressives have had enough. Also.
I am still on strike I refuse to research any GOP candidates until one of them can beat Obama in the polls. I mean 10% unemployment, gas prices over $4 a gallon and the GOP can’t find anyone to beat Obama?
This is the first time in History any sitting President with these numbers has out polled the entire GOP field.
I guess voters don’t believe that tax cuts for the rich will create jobs yet despite the polling only Newt seemed to realize the GOP agenda was killing the GOP.
But of course Newt got his Balls handed to him by his party and was forced Mao style to criticize himself and say sorry.
The GOP’s emotional choice voters heck us too can see that as a sign of weakness Newt is done, his fund raising is done.
Does anyone have a convincing argument who the GOP primary leader is now? Mitt is at the top of the polls but not with Fundy GOP primary voters.
You know he ignores us and many of us are not voting for him just real Lefties down ticket.
“Now seems like the time to throw down with Trumka and let everyone know that progressives have had enough. Also.”
A progressive movement with union collaboration and the disenfrachised. Strikes, boycotts, walkouts, sitins and unified demonstration by all groups. Summertime is right. College grads might be down for it too. People are pissed.
I’ve been saying since 2004 that the GOP’s problem is that they need to find someone to put a bland, unthreatening face on their cruel agenda — my shorthand name for it is “the Reagan trick.”
This person also can’t have too much of a record, lest the agenda be revealed too clearly (or worse in the eyes of the base, contradicted). So they need some other route to building up name recognition.
They were able to pull it off with Bush, who came across as personally innocuous but had the family name to make him marketable (otherwise, he’d have been another Pawlenty).
Lacking someone who has that built-in name recognition, though, they’re kind of stuck. Assuming a 2012 loss, there will be immense pressure on Jeb to run in 2016.
In the age of Internet and U-Tube the Nixon strategy of running Right to attract the base in the Primary then running toward the Center in the general election is impossible the GOP is not changing tactics even though the terrain of the battle ground has changed.
Prince Eugene of Savoy fighting the Janissaries ( the Turks slave elite mostly Former Christian commandos ) said of them they have forgotten nothing in a hundred years…and they have learned nothing in a hundred years.
(Not exact Quote )
Jeb we can take down easy and if Obama would give us a hand and declassify a few things Cheney’s secret energy meetings comes to mind we could take Jeb down easier than Sarah.
what about Palin? does she need to embarass herself again? i mean she did it in ’08? or is she just a natural and can ALWAYS be counted on to embarass herself without even trying?

One wonders if Spain and South America stole babies from Lefties in those countries with something like this in mind?
I don’t have an argument but my guess it will Mitch Daniels.

Any bets the GOP wants to break Unions and replace them with a similar system? Imagine an America where all civil servants like police, firemen etc got religious education/brainwashing to ensure loyalty.
Of course the GOP would never give them pensions but other than that it does seem this is where the GOP is heading.
His personal life could be a problem.
Just my opinion, but I don’t think the R candidate emerges from the current clown car.
Again, just opinion, but what I think will happen for the R’s is their candidate will emerge between late August and early October. Just enough time, say 90 days, to get a consolidated ground game going in IA, NH etc for the January runs.
If Petraeus quits in July, my bet is on him for their candidate.
Palin was perfectly positioned to be a “Reagan trick” candidate, but her ego got in the way.
A complication with the “Reagan trick” is that the front person has to be willing to be (or duped into being) a puppet for the Nixon/Cheneyesque forces doing the real dirty work of implementing the GOP agenda. But the vanity inherent in a successful politician makes it hard for them to be willing puppets.
He can’t get 50% approval in his own state last I checked the polls and his wife left him for another man though she did come back. The strong family GOPers will wonder why she left her 4 daughter to marry another guy just what could be so bad plus she would leave? Or if its her fault why did he take her back? Until he answers that the Fundies won’t vote for him.

Ethnic Syrian very well might trump Mormon as a No for the fundies. However I admit he might be the GOP’s next flavor of the month.
I am still on strike I am not doing heavy research this was 5 minutes of Google.
But that’s exactly why Obummer co-opted his sorry ass as CIA Chief…! 8-(
Think about it. Huntsman is running after Obama made him Ambassador to China, and he quit and is presumptively running.
What’s to stop Petraeus from doing the same? Nothing.
And one more thing; Obama has spent much capital on currying favor with the military/CIA.
Why wouldn’t one expect a jiu-jitsu maneuver from the Right to take a rehabilitated war failure to be an acceptable R nominee? No corporation would oppose Petraeus and despite the social piece of the far right and Teabaggers, they’d all support Petraeus – War God.
The R’s play to win, not to lose.
Agreed but just who can the GOP run against Obama who is getting at least 50% though 60% in his home state would in a normal race would be my minimum before making a pick?
Just what GOPer can run even never mind beat Obama in a poll now? I agree nobody running or even thinking about running is good and the GOP will realize this in july and begin a lock step everybody talk up and draft someone who is for right now off our radar.
But who can they draft that won’t be a sacrifice pawn?
Me I can’t come up with a single name…and I like to think of myself as a politics junkie. Maybe the Righty blogs are floating names?
I agree it is a very real possibility, but, I think Betrayus is looking more at 2016, what better place to build one’s oppo warchest than Langley…?
Lost two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will likely run on keeping both wars going when a majority of Americans want both wars over with Ossama dead Petraeus only looks good if we get another 9/11 attack or Iran invades Bahrain.
The Lizard Brains love emotion and war but hate losing wars.
It’s all just conjecture. But I never take for granted the depth the R’s will plumb.
Thinking they’re just going to sit out 2012…well, I just don’t see evidence in history of that. They are solidly proven fuckers, they play mean, and they play to win.
Yes but since when has that been a problem for wingnuts. :)

I can’t find her second husband’s name either did the CIA wipe out his identity was the guy a meth dealer or what even Newt can’t get the press to stop talking about his wives and he has tons of Clout.
Is Mitch’s Clout the Left Hand of Satan this kind this size of a media blackout on a person who has been in politics decades is unprecedented heck once Bush got into office we found out about his coke use and his not finished National Guard service.
We found out Laura ran her ex boyfriend over with a car. But we can’t find a Governor’s wife’s ex husband’s name?
If what I read about G. Bush was true all the lying that was done to get him elected I am sure they would spin the negatives for whoever they run. And really do you think those on the right really care about the personal stuff. Their only goal is to run a candidate who might have a chance against O. Again I am only speculating but Mitch is a “serious” person./s I don’t think it matters who they run the PTB want Obama to win so he can finish the job he started.
Wife leaves the husband gets married again it does not work out she comes back fine. But why hide the ex husband’s name nobody Left or Right can find out as if we don’t have enough locals in California who could do some digging?
Criminals hide their identities and keep low profiles either Mitch has Satan level CIA clout to hide this or more likely his wife took up with and led a criminal lifestyle for a few years.
Lisa is from California maybe I’ll ask her we need locals to get this story the Net seems wiped clean.
If the GOP field was not so weak I would laugh at Mitch running but I will accept he very well might be their best candidate to go against Obama.
I don’t seem him winning though.
Re: Mitch Daniels:
between helping Bush destroy the economy and his weird marital history, it’s hard for me to imagine that he will run.
He would have to be more vain and stupid than Gingrich, and I don’t think that’s possible.
Call me naive but it’s naive to think that any serious person with political ambition won’t wait to see the effects of the CItizens United ruling: 2012 could very well be a proof-of-concept toss-up/throw-away, with only jagoffs in the ring. Someone like Petraeus, whose halo glows honor and devotion to duty, might not want to be beholden to the warmongers who made him the first time around; or, conversely, to watch the money being used to undermine and (easily) destroy his self-valued halo.
You are probably right but don’t put it past these wackos to try it. As I stated I am merely speculating but I am thinking in terms of someone who would seem not to be a loony tunes. Besides the Fox viewers will believe anything they are told. :)
Obama will win because that’s what the PTB want. I think we agree on that.
Agreed:)
agreed.
that’s why they have no real contenders.
Palin won’t run because of that and because she’s making too much money in her current status.
this is all kabuki theater.
and those running are just part of the game – fundie ball.
fundie ball is amusing to watch. much like reality TV, it distracts from the real issues at hand, namely O selling off america.
I thought I had enough popcorn to last till Nov 2012 but I guess I need to go to Aldis and stock up. :)
I guess I was wrong.

THERE IS NO REPUBLICAN, ALIVE OR DEAD, WHO CAN UNITE ESTABLISHMENT REPUBLICANS AND TEA PARTYING EXTREMISTS
There will be no “majority” Republican candidate; only a “plurality” candidate is possible.
The Republican primary debates are going to be like watching a TV reality show that combines the pathos of a West Virginia coal mine disaster and the intellectual and emotional depth of a Jerry Springer “who’s your daddy” episode with the moral integrity of a KKK family get-together lynching at a Baptist tent revival meeting on Casino Night held at a Straights Only trailer park in Salt Lake City.
