Good morning, BT.
I want to know how DSK could have been running for French prez as a socialist.
Mornin’, BT, pups
Man, these southern pols are pulling out all the stops on Southern Strategy 2.0. If ya listen to these people it doesn’t take long to figure out that they’re apparently afraid of their own shadow.
The membership drive sure brings out the trolls and the whiners, doesn’t it? Oh, boo hoo, FDL shows ads by BP and other people we don’t like, boo hoo. WATB.
Damn good question. If that guy’s a socialist I’m a Regressive.
He sure did fall apart fast under pressure.
I suppose who’s applying the pressure makes a difference…
I would imagine most, if not all, of the pampered elite would fall apart after being arrested on a major felony charge. They’re not used to 8 x 10 hotel suites with no room service.
Did he ever see the inside of a cell? Somehow I doubt it. I haven’t been following the story that closely.
When they hold you without bail and put you on suicide watch they don’t let you hang out in the jail lobby.
That thought was sloshing around my brain. But they usually get such a bunch of enablers around them to support them, that they balls it out.
I don’t know what they did with this member of the Galtian MOTU club.
Malcolm X segment on democracynow. Talking about USG targeting him for assassination.
I guess the French socialist party like the Democratic Party “ain’t what they used to be”.
I’ve only read the first chapter of Manning Marable’s bio. Thanks for the heads up. I be sure to catch that.
Evidence is circumstantial but lots of unanswered Qs leaning in that direction.
Marable has recently died. His RA was the guest.
Looks like you’re right. He spent time in a jail cell:
.IMF chief jailed without bail in NY hotel-sex case
Haggard and unshaven after a weekend in jail, the chief of the International Monetary Fund was denied release on bail Monday
His attorney is going to try to have him released on $1M bail and house arrest at a hearing this morning. Right now he’s in a cell on suicide watch. DSK has surrendered his passport and said he won’t leave the country if released.
He died the weekend before the book was released. I was unaware of his serious health issues. Double lung transplant last year. That scares me and I’m fearless.
Maybe he thought “Socialist” meant that he was permitted to socialize with hotel personnel? Just a SWAG…
Morning BT & Firepups:
Rude on Ben Stein…
Wow. That’s quite a medical issue. I didn’t catch if they said what his problems were, but I think they didn’t go into details.
Possibly fits my current hypothesis that the demise of U.S.S.R. allowed a push of all western politics far far to the right.
Apparently pretty much the same way Obama runs as a Democrat, with most likely similar results…
Critic of Marable’s bio guest on dn.
They’re not used to 8 x 10 hotel suites with no room service.
There’s service — whether you want it or not.
Good Morning Everyone
I guess another perk of volunteering during the day is missing trolls. New ones or old ones?
Malcolm X withheld a couple chapters from his autobiography and they are in the possession of an attorney in Chicago, iirc, and Marable was allowed 15 minutes to look them over in a restaurant with the attorney. Covered some of his time with Farrakan. Marable also writes about who he thinks actually killed Malcolm X. The book has been criticized for that.
Talk over between Marable critic & Dyson.
I’m outta here, off to tasks.
Oh, yikes. Thanks for the early morning Ewwwwww.
You have a dirty mind.
Of the few comments on BT’s membership drive post yesterday there was 1 new troll and 1 old whiner, with the same ol’ whine no less.
Love Rude. Bought his book after Book Salon, and have it queued up on my iPad. The DSK stuff is pretty interesting. They’ve linked his accuser to housing for AIDS sufferers, not sure whether that’s true or an attempt to belittle her, but DSK could’ve gotten himself more than he bargained for.
Good morning, pups. Gawd I wish it would stop raining.
Hiya, Demi. I was AFK much of the day and didn’t see trolls either. Saw one a couple of days ago whining about PUAC, and I wasn’t too nice to him/her.
This is all new material to me & I’m not good at multitasking, so I may be misunderstanding. But what I got out of the critic is criticism of Marable’s sources, many of which are from USG, and thus biased.
I didn’t hear any criticism of Marable’s speculation on who killed him.
Tee hee. So do I, that was my first thought!!
good morn almost back to EDT….but cat wakes me up early anyway…damn French chat
yeah me too…basement flooded….yuck
And a potty mouth, too. I yam who I yam.
Molly, you can come sit with me. *g*
Say three “Our Fathers” and two “Hail Marys” and promise never to have those thoughts again.
I’ll have to look at the biblio but I understand he used a lot of the stuff the DOJ had on Malcolm X that he got through FOIA.
What was the general attitude about PUAC? Good Lard, it’s only a couple of hours, very early on a Saturday Morning.
Oh noes. Will you have to pump it out? Critters fine, though?
I’ve seen a couple content trolls at PUAC lately. “Why are you writing about food? This is a political blog.” kinda stuff. Jerks.
the pump wont work unless its 3 inches deep so for now,its wet vac,and dehumidifier, not helping my sore shoulder, but hark i think i see the sun
It’s already the 19th. Our thermometer looks scary.
Or is that a barometer?
ignore, lifes too short for troll recognition
Apparently too much frivolous stuff about gardening and chit chat among commenters. This person apparently had no idea what PUAC was supposed to be, and a couple of us set her straight (my recollection is a female screen name, but I can’t be sure). I told her we are sort of a family and PUAC is a break, and if she didn’t like it, to please move along.
So for some frivolous chit chat, how did your first day with the upstairs honchos go?
Has anyone ever come to Caterday to complain that you’re talking about cats?
By the way, I just started reading a Rita Mae Brown book that is co-authored by her cat. I love Rita.
oh shit thought it was the 18th,lost another day…jet lag sux
I have never had water in my basement in this house, and I hope I never do, since it’s finished and carpeted. I think someone said we are “up” 11 inches in rainfall this spring. And Texas and elsewhere are dry dry dry.
It’s the cat in me. They’re like toys, I can’t resist battin’ ‘em around a bit.
it is not my house,or i would permanently fix the problem,it sux
very good…it is good for laughs
It was wonderful. Lupe’s a super nice woman and so are the rest of the Volunteer Team staff. I’ll see how it goes, but my knee jerk reaction is I might be spending more and more time there. A lot more similar environment of which I am used to. (terrible syntax, I know – coffee just starting to kick in.)
PS – Thanks for asking.
OMG Mike Fair! Mike Fair was a star quarterback for Parker High School in Greenville, SC, graduating in 1964. Parker High School’s major curricula were textiles, machinining, carpentry, ets. You working class romantics–Mike Fair is a child of the working class. His parents were workers in one of many of Greenville’s then many textile mill. After a lackluster business career, he used his football stardom to first win public office. He’s been there ever since. Of course he’s innumerate, ignorant, and bigoted. That’s what the powers-that-be in South Carolina wanted all workers to be; his school was less likely to have teachers with a different opinion.
And yes he was good enough and his offensive line was tough enough that, for my high school, he was a quarterback we loved to hate.
this guys the rage in France
must get you a coppy for Caturday
A lot more similar environment of which I am used to.
That is something up with which I will not put. (WC)
Back on topic: I loathe McCain, but the Frothy’s statement that McCain doesn’t understand torture just makes him (Santorum) look incredibly stupid.
I love it that when Rachel was discussing Santorum the other night, the display behind her was a Google search page with Santorum on it. Didn’t need to say anything. I wonder how many people Googled his name? LOL.
Who you calling “OLD”?
Boxturtle (MyFDL comment structure *WHINE*)
The environment is more similar to that which I am used to. ???
poor little Ricky..he seems to have lost any neurons he was born with, dropped on head,as a baby?
You can probably do as much — or more — good helping to run things and make them efficient (assuming that would be part of your contribution), than you can on the front lines passing out food. Lots of good people can pass out food, but not everyone can do the administrative side.
I’ve always donated food to the Postal Workers drive, but never thought about where it went once the letter carrier took it away. I assume it goes to local food banks. Good to have a better picture.
That’s because Frothy knows that real torture produces the truth.
I am so turnin’ you in to the grammar police. *g*
Whoever pays attention to the syntax of things will never wholly kiss you.
Mine too, BoxTurtle. I hate it! And I’m not sure I like this new moderator comment flag stuff either. (That’s today’s WHINE)
Wasn’t you. Old, as in regular.
The environment is much more familiar to me.
The flag’s been there. It’s the text that’s new. Unless folks asked most didn’t know what the flag was for.
I hadn’t even noticed. Too much screen clutter, IMHO. As someone (maybe BoxTurtle) put it on the moderating system announcement post (which I hadn’t seen until last night), we asked for un-nested comment threads and restoration of the edit and format tools, and we get a new mod system.
But of course, it’s not my “house” and I don’t get to pick.
Coincidentally enough, she’s got me researching certain aspects of volunteer “handling”. We’re going to be putting together questions for interviews. It takes a specific ability to supervise a large number of volunteers, well any people actually, and the staff in the food department are more like “islands”, if you know what I mean. How to get them to communicate more efficiently will be the challenge.
Thank you. I forgot less is more. And, KISS.
Can you point me to that, please?
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.
US KIA Afghanistan: 1,581
US KIA Irak: 4,452
Iraki, Afghan and Pakistani casualties: estimates vary to over 1.5M

No war but class war
Never. Give. Up.
Here ya go.
Sorry, Demi, I had gone off to fix some breakfast, and I see that SD beat me to it.
Apparently they’re going to start with myFDL and roll it out to the entire site eventually. The idea is that Firepups will have more of a hand in the modding. But some commenters raised some pretty cogent objections. We shall see…
Thanks. And, thanks to Molly too. I’ll read that when I get home this afternoon.
Hope you have good days.
The same way Tony Blair ran as a socialist. The parties want to win so bad they will take anyone who they think will defeat the Right. It’s a devil’s bargain. Strauss-Kahn would have been a disaster for the Left, and would have reopened the door to Le Pen’s daughter. The old Communist Left working class vote has pretty much migrated to the far right because they don’t see themselves in the technocratic elite that makes up a good part of the present-day French socialist party. Fabius is a good example. Mitterand succeeded because he was a snake, one of the best since Richelieu. The Right wouldn’t have him because De Gaulle detested him, so he went to the only other formation that could carry him to power.
The French left was resigned to Strauss-Kahn mainly because they figured he could win the second tour or round. French elections are in two phases, about two or three weeks apart. In the first it’s like a primary. Everyone votes his true preference. The second round pits the two top vote-getters against each other, and each side rounds up its closest members. That’s why it was such a shock when Le Pen edged out Jospin for second place. The classical left was forced to vote for Chirac.
In my view the Left are better off without DSK. I will check this out with my friends in a couple of days, as I am flying to Paris tomorrow night.
Is there no nervous anticipation of the surprise the WH promises in today’s Obama speech?
Last night the WH leaked that he may promise money to good foreign governments and tell bad ones to stop being bad – but there will not be Hillary’s requested grand announcement of a US plan for a two state solution that we push on Israel.
I am sure it will be a great speech./s
