President Barack Obama made a “very gutsy call” to send Navy SEALs into Pakistan to kill Osama bin Laden, outgoing Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in an interview broadcast Sunday.
“I worked for a lot of these guys. And this is one of the most courageous calls – decisions — that I think I’ve ever seen a president make,” Gates told CBS in a wide-ranging interview aired on “60 Minutes.”
On the other hand, if it involves something “boring” like fiscal sanity and government working and taking care of things like, oh, Americans — courage is in short supply:
The advisers are deeply concerned about winning back political independents, who supported Obama two years ago by an eight-point margin but backed Republicans for the House this year by 19 points. To do so, they think he must forge partnerships with Republicans on key issues and make noticeable progress on his oft-repeated campaign pledge to change the ways of Washington.
Anybody think the GOP is getting less crazy, smarter, or easier to deal with through this “political” negotiating strategy?
It turns out the six-month spending bill Congress passed in April increased discretionary outlays through the remainder of the fiscal year by a bit over $3 billion.

Courage was also lacking during the healthcare debates, Bush tax cuts, closing Gitmo, trade deals, ending these damn wars, meddling in other countries affairs, and on and on.
If the GOP were “less crazy, smarter, or easier to deal with”, they would be able to dress a kangaroo in a suit and beat this pathetic excuse for a president.
Taking on the wingnuts isn’t my choice of stuff to do, actually, but it has to be done if the country is going to keep above water financially. Wish we could do something as effective as send in the SEALs to make them behave, but that’s not going to be possible.
They’d better be worried – not just about the Indies, but the newbie Democrats he got on the rolls and who won’t be back.
The corporate takeover of government is complete, and CEObama is just the new look of Profits Over People, Inc.

Good morning, pups. It’s Brooks and Cohen today. Bobo assures us that “Nice Guys Finish First.” He says that developments in the study of evolution suggest that the survival of the fittest depends as much on cooperation as it does on a competition between self-interests. This is a new wrinkle on how to get Democrats to go along to get along… Mr. Cohen, in “To Fly or To Walk,” wonders if society is moving from metropolis to aerotropolis, a redeye to apocalypse.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got apple walnut muffins that are still warm. After a period of summer-like weather we seem to be back in spring, for which we’re very grateful. We’ll get enough summer later this year… Have a great day.
Good morning all,
If the courageous kill that Dr Martin Luther King Jr.,Gahandi and Jesus were some of the worlds standout cowards.
obama’s no coward that’s for sure and he’s more courageous everyday, even trying to murder Americans abroad with his cowardly drone slaughter of innocents, a real manly man.
Thanks Marion, yep, Bobo usually is pushing the latest wrinkle in wingnut mantra – and always wants to worst for the many. Thanks for reading his drivel for us.
Courage to be the public front man for a psyop about supposedly killing someone who’s already been dead for a decade??? Seems pretty easy to me.
Remember the time (one of the many) the GOP wanted to amend the Constitution to allow the Gropinator to run for President?
Schwarzenegger fathered child of household staff a decade ago. Just before he ran for Governor and denied all those accusations of groping women.
Apparently, Maria found out just before the rest of us.
That’s a really stupid assumption and one unsupported by reality. Swing voters tend to vote left or right, just like partisan voters. Where the “swing” comes in is whether they decide to go vote or to stay home. This strategy will ensure that they stay home in droves and then those same advisers will sagely tell the Democrats that they have to behave even more Republican to win them back.
Stupid.
Canned column for Bobo today — he’s too excited:
“Newtie asked me to the prom! Squeeeee!”
Greg Sargent “I’m not edorsing this view. I’m just reminding folks that there isn’t any big mystery here. This is who Obama is”.
Me neither – but everybody knew that – That he wanted to ‘unite his fellow Americans’ -(and what has that to do with ‘killing’ an ‘enemy’?)
So – if half of his fellow Americans would become the craziest of all teabaggers he would have the duty -(in his mind) to ‘unite’ these crazy teabaggers with all these ‘independents’ and ‘progressives’.
So why don’t we just make sure -(at the next election) – that all these crazy teabaggers get ‘unelected’ again? Than he just has to ‘unite’ your average conservative with independents and progressives. And I’m not edorsing this view. I’m just reminding folks that there isn’t any big mystery here. This is who Obama is”.
And about the ‘killing’ – I think it’s all MY (and Glenns) fault. I yelled at Obama so many times about being a ‘wimp’ and to ‘stand up against the ‘agressors’ that he took me literally and wanted to prove to the American people for once and for all that he is a tough dude. Uuuh the terrible irony!!
Sure! Then Newtie can change his positions depending on the audience and Bobo will insist he didn’t/
No more votes for Vichycrats. Ever. I’ve voted without fail for my entire adult life and I may again this cycle. But it won’t be for more Republicans wearing Democratic clothing or for Marshall Barack Petain.
I don’t know Margaret in poll after poll ‘independents’ declare that they sick and tired of ‘partisan bickering’ and that they want ‘results’- perhaps just not the ‘results’ we want.
(and I’m not endorsing…)
Spoken like Bobo or Milbank. Care to provide a link to these hypothetical polls?
In my district, I’m voting to get the worst Rep in Congress, that on the floor accused a sex slave in the Marianas of being inclined to be on the streets anyway, so I’ll vote for Vichycrat if that is what’s the other choice.
Hope your interview went well?
I’m able to endorse that:’No more votes for Vichycrats’. But like Greg Sargent I also understand ‘reality’ and what it ment in the election in last novembers. But somebody has to get punished for his own ‘principles’ and if it’s US!
Besides, Independents constitute roughly a third of all Americans. So there are two problems I see right away:
1) Roughly a third of all voters think Obama is from Kenya. ‘Nuff said
2) A third of the electorate isn’t going to be electing anybody. If Obama’s base, (me et al) stay home, he’s going to lose. period.
disclaimer: I don’t believe that much in polls but I remember one where the majority of the ‘independents’ were really happy that Obama found this ‘compromise’ at the last ‘tax-or-no-tax-for-the-rich-desaster.
Amen. One would be better off assuming that a truly “independent” voter does not exist. Obama needs all those who voted for him in 2008 to turn out and do so again. Period. They weren’t “independent” in 2008 and they won’t be “independent” in 2012. And most won’t be voting for the Republican challenger.
He’s back to the pre-OBL-killing approval numbers — with an economy that may be double dipping. Millions who voted for him feel that he has fucked them over in favor of banks and the wealthy.
His strategy is twofold: remain “most likable” and hope the Rs run a loser. He’s not trying to win over “independents.” It’s all about “likability.”
Pretty well I’d say. I leave for my first day in about twenty minutes.
And me, I’m tired of voting for the “lesser of two evils”. If they want to destroy the country, they can do it without my help and definitely without my endorsement. Until there are consequences for their behavior, there is no motivation for them to change it.
But you still don’t care to provide a link. You know, I can say that purple pigs fly backwards but without some kind of citation, nobody would, (or should), believe me.
and if the ‘independents’ are the ones who decide who ultimately will be president? -(Because the ‘right’ and ‘left’ just votes the way they vote) -
Or in other words: The political power of such a small group like the teaparty amazes me – But that’s how it is in these democracies – If you are the one who can tip the scale – You are the ‘decider’!
Because, like I said above, “independents”, (like myself), vote left or right, not left and right. They tend to vote in a partisan way, just like the party members and partisan voters. The difference is whether they bother to get up and go vote. Do you think
PetainObama can win without his base?Fantastic, so glad to hear it. Happy birfday present.
why provide a link for something which was all over the intertubes and discussed here and everywhere else for ever and ever? (‘these ‘independents’ have no ‘principles’) – and if you want to reread the whole desaster – It’s really easy to ‘google’ it!
I don’t think Obama can’t win without his ‘base’ if you were talking about ‘young and enthusiastic Obamabots’!
I hope you know ‘likability’ is about winning over ‘independents’ because voters who don’t go for a certain ‘political ideology’ have the tendency to go for the ,more ‘likable’ candidate.
Love the Petain reference!
Congrats on the new job! I’ve been doing a little dance and humming a happy song since I heard the news!
Seems to me people voted for Obama because he promised change from Bush and so very many were so sick of Bush.
Now that the writing’s on the wall that he’s just an extension of Bush, why would anyone get excited about him.
I, for one, think his second term will be WORSE than his first term. I strongly suspect that he will privatize Social Security, effectively get rid of Medicare and Medicaid will go entirely down the tubes ( for adults anyway) I notice nobody’s taking about Medicaid, a sure sign THAT’S on the table.
I just heard on my local news that the cops can come into my home, secretly and rifle thru my papers at will, (the Patriot Act).
People say he’s better than Bush, at least, but I don’t see it. I think in many ways he’s worse; at least we knew Bush was lying to US.
It’s disgusting to see Robert Gates catapulting the propaganda. Little Black Rambo indeed! If it takes courage to lie, Obama is a GIANT.
Yah – Appealing To The Center Drives Away Voters
Uuuh – ‘politics’ – What these crazy pollsters often forget – that a lot and probably truly ‘independends’ might be ‘none of ALL the above’ – They are no ‘libertarians’ – NO ‘postmodernists’ no ‘whatsoevers’ – they might be very young and ‘Stewartists’ (fans of Jon Stewart) – and perhaps they are just plain and simple completely totally sick of ‘politics’ and they might just want to have a ‘cool’ president. And if the candidate is NOT cool – They don’t vote – and one day these pew-poll-idiots will try to ‘poll’ them too -(through cell-phones?) But until that hasn’t happen don’t worry about it!
so let’s stop with this ‘courage’ stuff or the ‘Black Rambo’ (as you called him) has to prove again how courageous he is!
Independents – the real ones left after Quinnipiac University Polls pull out the lean D or lean R folks – will vote solely on economics – jobs, the economy.
And they are not 36% of the vote – more like 15% after the “leans” are pulled out (there are more R leans then D leans so Obama winning independents that include the leans was unusual – perhaps confirming Margaret’s “stay home” analysis).
But since without the leaners, the base of independents could be as small as 150 respondents in the typical national sample of 1,000, and the sampling error of such a small number would be very large — 15 percentage points, making it hard to take even a seven-point shift seriously.
Makes getting out your base job one – and fixing the economy job 1.1 -
and Obama is a failure to date on motivating the base.
