Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks — Milk Shakin’ Mama featuring Lickettes Maryann Price and Naomi Eisenberg, on The Flip Wilson Show, September 27, 1972.
What’s on your mind?
Eve Suz!
I always loved Flip Wilson as a kid. To this day I don’t think I laughed so hard as at one of his shows.
thanx
hey ks — how ya doing tonight? i found a buncha flip videos i’ve bookmarked and expect to feature a comedy skit or two of his in the future.
Hi Suz, big thumbs up on future appearances of Flip Wilson! Like ks, he was always a huge fave of mine; I’ll never forget his character Geraldine ;-)
Suz! Hilarious!
hey ll — how’s nova tonight? there’s some prime geraldine on utube *wicked grin*
hey newton — how’s the west bay tonight? glad ya liked tonight’s video
Nice here, we got rain again (so my prediction of a waterless immediate future was… all wet) today.
How’s it up there?
Hey LL
Oh goody *rubs hands together with glee* can’t wait!
NoVA is murky and damp the last few days…I feel like we’re in the PNW or something ;-)
hiya newton!
payday blues
tonight I’m nervous and excited, yes, all jacked up on coffee — I think it means I have to eat something, and oh, I guess it’d a full moon too.
How is it where everyone else is?
whatcha all nervous and excited about ks?
Dan Hicks is good stuff! I haven’t been all that familiar with him; gonna have to seek him out. Hopefully he’ll come to town in one venue or another around here.
geraldine and joe
just like I said: coffee, full moon. I’ll cook some rice and see how I feel
check out their website (the dan hicks link up top) for touring info — i think they call it ‘see dan live’
ah…here in oregon its election day — so its extra jittery here. my tillamook county ballot was all local measures but portland has a big school levy measure on their ballot. results are starting to come in so tonight is sorta kinda election jittery here (we are a mail in ballot state)
Shoot, looks like they’re nowhere close to me this year :-( I’ll keep tabs on it though.
Add me to the list of Flip Wilson fans. One summer day a few years ago there was a Flip marathon on tv, and a neighbor across the street came to see if I was all right. Yes, just laughing so hard it disturbed the peace.
fork!
Geraldine and Joe Willie!
watching…
Great vid Suz, great vid . . . love Dan N Band, for a lonnnnggggg time. One of the few I don’t have in my music library, sad to say. Got vinyl, but need to buy stuff for all the vinyl transfer . . . someday . . . . maybe . . . lol
Saw him a few times late 60′s/early 70′s round the Bay Area, at least once at Old Fillmore I think, once Winterland. N like others, Flip WIlson just made me laff . . . . he wasw great.
Rain off and on all day, solid thru from 5pm or so to now, still raining.
Incredible for this place . . . High of 58F today, usually mid 80′s, often hits triple digits in May.
I’m lovin it!!!
*G*
How’s everyone else . . . .
hey margot — how’s ohio tonight? i also think of hot summer nights when i think of the flip wilson show — makes me wonder if he started out as a summer replacement series or something.
eveing, Suzzzz – hiya LL, msrgot
hey larue — wow, what a great time you musta had seeing him live. dang dood, you got my oregon temps and weather today
hey ppd — how was your day today?
Classic . . .
Hey Margot, Larue, PPD – be back in a sec, still watching Geraldine…
the devil made me do it
Last summer was mild comparatively, the winter was glorious n cool n wet, spring has been heavenly.
It’s all gonna come to a screeching halt soon, with 100′s days on end.
LeSigh.
For now, tho, it’s good.
:-)
Just driving by, thought Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby singing Whole Wide World would be a fine tune to entertain the good folks here @ LLN FDL. Wednesday is Eric’s birthday.
That has got to be THE keystone Flip WIlson.
Great catches n thanks for the smiles!
hey mr why — how ya doing tonight?
Suz, it was warm and humid (and rainy), then it got cold and rainy. I wish we could divert some of the rain to the Southwest where they really need it…I’ve had enough for a while.
i scare myself
Nice.
Been lucky to catch Amy Rigby a number of times since ’00 at fests out here, always a thrill solo or with a band. Never seen Wreckless Eric . . . he’s new to me! Thanks!
pretty good, thanks Suzzz – Dad’s still hanging in there.
i hear ya…. i’m tired of the wet and cold — weather dood is saying that starting tomorrow, we will get 4 days in a row of no rain.
i’ll believe it when it happens.
has all the family made it to see him or are still others coming?
Ok, I gotta run . . . thanks for the vids Suz n Pups, great stuff.
We do it again in the morrow, in the meantime hug ‘em close n make ‘em smile.
g’nite larue
Okay, a mystery has been solved for me after watching the vid
In the booth
In the back
In the corner
In the dark
That had always stuck in my head and couldn’t remember where I’d first heard it – thank you Suz and Geraldine ;-)
g’night Larue :-)
ice cream
Joe Namath can’t keep a straight face hahahaa
Almost everyone between last week and weekend, Suzzz
nimoy’s ears
a very bittersweet time
Warm thoughts to you and your family, PPD
Those Jackson kids were so cute!
folks, as you know, fdl is running a membership drive. if you are not already a member, please click on this link and join.
if it takes me calling you to getcha to join, let me know in the comments. i’ll contact you via email and set up a time to call ya tomorrow and set up your membership.
I know, I love it that he cracks up…
and for our lurkers — send me an email at suzanne (at) firedoglake (dot) com and i’ll set up the same deal for ya.
Hey PPD
Got my card in yesterday’s mail, and huge thanks to the anonymous kind and generous firedog who helped me get that membership! I said I’d pay it forward, and I will – very soon…
(I didn’t get a phone call, but that’s okay :-) )
i love my card — cracks me up everytime i look at the back and see ‘card carrying member of the professional left’. i got my tote bag last week and can’t wait to take it grocery shopping. it comes with its own little bag to store it in and folds up really tiny — hardly takes up any room in my purse.
ooh I’ll have to get a tote bag too! Sounds very cool :-)
Jimmy Hall, y’all.
I put my card in a special place in my wallet: right next to my IAFF union card – seemed fitting!
hey that guy — how’s your new job?
Suz, they put me off for a week, apparently IT hasn’t got all my stuff in place and they don’t want to pay me for sitting with my thumb up my ass. So I took a gig tonight and played loud guitar.
Too Tall to Mambo!
sweet dood…. where was tonight’s gig? san jose again?
to clarify — that sweet was for the gig — not for them putting ya off a week
Congrats on your new job, ThatGuy, very happy news! I was also thrilled to hear that Margaret got a job too, that is awesome.
First saw Dan Hicks in 1964 when he was a folkie, then a year later as a member of The Charlatans. Been to his house in Mill Valley, because my business is moving pianos and he has one. Also has some nice guitars.
First time I got laid was also the same day I saw Dan for the first time, at a folk music workshop and camp out weekend at a ranch in Santa Rosa. That will make you remember.
Santa Clara. Easy gig, they want me in the band but they’re not good enough. I’ll play a fill in but playing with these guys after playing with Lee Roy or Delbert just doesn’t measure up. I’ll take their money for fill in stuff but they’ll never take it to the next level and my band will.
Ghod I wish I could sing like Jimmy Hall.
hey repack — holy moly — wow. how forking kewl to have that musical memory and to have moved his pianos. how ya doing tonight?
They all wanted to see Dad while he’s still here, so the positives far outweigh the negatives for us.
hi margot
i wish i could sing — i can only do it when there is absolutely no one around — like when i’m driving. if my downstairs neighbors are home, i’ll not sing. i have a horrible voice.
Loudonlib; Thanks man. It’s been a long dry spell. I’m finally able to spend some of the cash I’d saved up, for things like fixing my truck’s front end, getting another tooth fixed, things like that. MIGHT go on the Delbert Cruise if Lee Roy goes. But J and I have already decided, no Lee Roy, no go. There are “issues” and he may not go.
Nice to have new shocks and a tight front end again.
AAAAAAAAAAND, I suspect you’re Too Tall to Mambo!
too dayam tall to limbo for dayam sure dood (laughing) and too forking old — i don’t bend like i used to…
But I bet you can make some Red Hot Chicken!
i like my chicken
i sure hope thatguy and margaret finding jobs means that jobs are starting to become more plentiful. we sure have a lotta hurting pups who need jobs.
I hope so, too.
hope
we need a “like” button here ;-)
aw thanks ll *blushing*
more hope
hopes and dreams
Hey folks!
Just a quick note to say hi. Did you see my ideas mentioned in Jane’s follow up thread?
I’m going to turn the first idea, of training small teams for town hall questions, in a web based seminar. I hope it will be of interest to people.
hey spocko — i did – way to represent dood!!! how ya doing tonight?
ooh really nice!
Margaret found a job? That’s wonderful, I missed it. So glad!
Love Dan Hicks. Didn’t know he could dance, though. I used to always sing “Got My Paycheck Today” to my girls on payday.
Very good, spocko, that’ll be extremely useful!
from her interview yesterday — she has a thank you diary up at my
hey loohoo — how was your day today?
Up in the 90′s now Suz…
ty Suz, I’ll go look
Hey girl, twice in 2 nights we get to chat!
Great, Suz, you’re day? Home from PS.

oooo thanks for the heads up warning ll… i don’t wanna snag ‘it’
g’nite ppd
What are the odds, honey?

myheart goes out to you PPDCUS
Spocko, missed you’re article/discussion. I’ll go check.

g’night PPD, rest well.
happy lucky 100 loohoo!!!
have you decided to live in ps or stay at your old place? or are ya still deciding?
night LL – take care
thanks, ksp — we’re doing the best we can under the circumstances
I am all over it. I have been saying the same thing around these parts. A course in proper vetting 101. Hope i wont be out of town or otherwise too frikkin busy.
hey homeroid — how’s homer tonight?
Aint listened to Dan Hicks since the tape deck died. Gotta find me a new tape deck for the pickup.
don’t need a tape deck tonight — several hicks links for ya to enjoy upthread
Gonna call it a night in a few…the post-retirement slothitude has been awesome, but I really need to get some stuff done! Thanks Suz and g’night all!
I need to spend a summer in ps. If I can tolerate the heat, I may move there. Need to talk to my tax guy. In the meantime I rent it. If I move there I rent my home, which would be better money-wise.
g’nite ll
Good night, sweets. No rules!
wheww, I needed to eat. Serves me right. Now I got the food-lude and my brain’s got the dropsy’s
g’nite LL
and g’nite all
Imma go and look at teh pillow upclose, make sure it don’t move…
:)
my mom and step dad lived in palm desert for almost 15 years and loved it there. they moved to a phoenix suburb last year to be closer to their health care insurance, friends, and my sister lives there.
ooooo that’s encouraging ks — i see an inner eyelid inspection in your future…
I been listening for a while thanks. I am still searching for a piece of electronics they don’t make any more. So i don’t talk much.
on the plus side, you did get a replacement battery under warranty :)
guess its about time for my inner eyelid inspection myself.
g’nite all — thank you for letting me hang out with ya tonight — i’ll check this thread and my email when i get up tomorrow to see if anyone wants a telephone call from me to facilitate their membership subscription.
Ah actually i was looking for a 36v brushed motor controller unit, that was made about 4 years ago but cant seem to find even on ebay. These things are now obsolet. Next move is deconstruct and rebuild.
Good. The right using all sorts of techiques to thwart questions at town halls.
We will have to fight off 1) No questions spoken allowed 2) the general slipperiness of politicians 3) the media who love tea partiers but hate dirty hippies.
Rep Allen West is using all these techniques.
So just having a great question isn’t enough. My plan involves teams of three working together to react to responses and to
Caputure and promote “Macca moments.”
The teams can use people who are researchers, writers,’speakers,’video editors and promoters.
Both introverts and extroverts can help using, technology, teamwork and courage.
It might seem like common sense but if it works we will get some damning video.
O
Nite Suz
Absolutely people need to know how to come to a loaded conversation-armed with thought. I could go on but must retire now. Will hold for later.
