Yes, that is a live cam, and yes, that is me (and Ryan) in the office, talking to people on the phone who want to become members of the FDL membership program. If that’s a group that includes you, click here or give us a call (yes, call me!) at (202) 506-3907.
[But wait! There's More!]
We had a FANTASTIC webinar conference with our members last week. We wanted to know what they thought FDL’s role should be in the 2012 election, and beyond. Every person who wanted to speak about their ideas got the opportunity to do so, and we got to hear a lot of amazing suggestions:
- Marion M: Get nuclear power plant loan guarantees out of the 2012 budget
- Spocko: Build teams and train them to work together to question candidates effectively at town halls
- Tim F: Find a way to communicate without the web, protecting our community in the event ‘someone’ decides to terminate or severely limit access to the internet
- Spocko: Get FDL members on corporate financial conference calls to question their Citizen United and Crossroads funding
- Kelly C: Create a member working group to develop both the standards and technology for FDL candidate scorecards
- KS Populist: Focus on redistricting
- Dean M: Work on campaign finance reform – strike at the root.
- John A: Build stronger media infrastructure, strategic political infrastructure, and coalition building so that we can mass our energies and speak with a louder voice.
- Susan V: My first concern is protecting the environment. If our planet is trashed, we’re SOL
- Donald S: Jobs, jobs jobs.
There were people who thought Obama should be primaried, and people who thought we should stay out of the Presidential race entirely. There were people who wanted to focus on Congress, and others who wanted to ignore elections at the federal level and work solely on state races. Some wanted to work on electing better Democrats, some wanted to focus on the Greens, and some wanted to form a new third party. Still others wanted to use the election as an opportunity to get movement on issues, and ignore candidates altogether.

GOAL: 1,000 New Members
by June 1st
Support our one-stop shop for in-depth news coverage and hard-hitting activism.
Clearly there are a lot of different ideas that need to be explored further. Everyone’s suggestions were treated with respect, and we focused on what kind of “next steps” we could take as a group to learn more about them.
We’re in the exploratory phase right now, and we’re going to be inviting experts on to talk with our members on future webinars before any conclusions are reached. We want to create an environment for learning about what’s possible. We’ll also be dividing up into member committees to explore different options.
And we’ll be constantly asking our members what they think, and what they want to do, in surveys that we share with them so that we can all have an idea of where we stand as a community as we make our plans for the future.
It is a really exciting effort, the 3.0 version of online activism, that allows us to use new technology for a much more interactive working relationship with the FDL community. And we want you to be a part of that.
If you’re not a member already, you can join today right here. Or, you can call me at (202) 506-3907 and do it over the phone. As you can see, Ryan and I are standing by to talk with you right now!

About Firedoglake
Ah, Tim F. is a clever person — that’s occurred to me as well. But I think passenger pigeons are extinct. Can we get tin cans and some really really really long balls of string?
P.S.: I assume that the lower case “r” at the end of the Thread headline (Threadline?) is a typo and probably needs to be removed. I hereby apply for privileges as an informal roving copyeditor.
P.P.S.: Am already a member and encourage everyone who can to become one as well.
Woot! Go get ‘em Jane!
I thought it was a great idea. It was one of those that I went “hmmm, I should have thought of that!”
Ryan is talking to Katherine right now. You can also call me on 202 470 0720 if the other number is busy.
Okay we went down for a minute with the UStream, but Brian is in there taking care of it.
I don’t know about anyone else, but on my computer you are working in a pitch black room. I would like to see you at work, but I just can’t.
I could join if you were to allow 4 or 5 dollar a month paypal or debit card deductions. I’m one of those “Poor” people we’ve been reading so much about. I’ve got 7 bucks in my paypal account. I would love to be a member for four or five bucks a month…
Does this make us all voyeurs?
Remember when Jane pointed to the SUSA polling showing just how badly the Baucus-WellPoint version of HCR was killing the Democrats? Remember the flak she took for it?
Remember how she was proved right?
FDL: Because we won’t tell you the yellow stuff hitting your leg is rain.
OK, you’re on.
Hi Jane – thanks for everything. You Rock !
I hope you understand if I don’t sign up – have never been much of a joiner of things, and as a non-citizen, i don’t need the NSA file thank you very much. That said, I very much appreciate what it is that you are doing with this site and wish you all the best going forward.
THANKS!
Ooh excellent!
Next person to call & request it can have a special Ustream dog cameo. They’re sleeping now but they said they were willing to wake up to do requests.
Steely, good news! We have a monthly friends membership for $5 bucks! Call Jane and she’ll hook you up!
Hi, Jane. Already a member, due to some wonderful anonymous member who paid for me.
I missed the last webinar because I didn’t get the time right.
But, I hope it’s not too late to add my comment:
Several years ago, when Christy Hardin Smith was posting Constitutional Law issues, we discussed the importance of perhaps asking potential candidates who they viewed as potential SCOTUS apointees.
I’m so sorry I missed the webinar, as I had actually put some real thought into what to bring up. If you could add that to the list off issues that members care about, I’d be greateful.
And, thanks for everything you do.
(If it weren’t for FDL drawing my attention to important issues, I probably wouldn’t be working as a volunteer to help feed the needy and homeless.)
I’m certain you folks have already thought of this, but just in case,
There is winning and there is winning.
If you “win” and lose your ideals, then you have lost everything.
If you win and stay true to thyself, then you have won what the Gods themselves would admire and respect.
the TPs are slash and burning without thought. they just want to “win”. when they get what they want, and they might, they will look around and all they will see is the scarred barren landscape they have created. no more compassion, decency, or integrity.
so how do you go up against the big boys?
don’t fight the fights you can necessarily win. fight the fights worth fighting.
simply, there is no way you can take on the monied men head on. play by THEIR rules and you lose. especially since they can change those rules, and do, when they see fit. you can NOT go head to head against the monied men. that’s a waste of resources.
so how? well I’m glad you asked. learn from success, theirs and ours, and learn form failures, theirs and ours.
the national stage has a very poor cost benefit analysis. it’s literally throwing away money IF HEAD TO HEAD. you can still use the proper leverage to steer somewhat, but that’s minor.
But locally, one can have significant advantages. namely the money issue becomes less relevant. not irrelevant, but just less. locally, door to door and boots on the ground can be highly effective. cement position. hold them. and use them for traction. this should be a state by state action in hard blue states. and prove you are worthy to the people by only pushing for candidates that meet the criteria. they don’t, do NOT support them. oppose them. standards go up. when they start going down or you compromise, THEY ARE NO LONGER STANDARDS.
local politics can have a great deal of effect, as the Rs have shown. learn from it. and local is where one should focus. while keeping the federal situation at stalemate. funnel energy and money into locals significantly where one can have tremendous benefits. federally, the same dollar will have almost no effect. too much money at the federal level. it’s like going up against 1000 Goliaths. so use your resources well. LOCALLY.
lastly, the term progressive is just a name. it does not define you or anyone. it’s just a word. let it go.
it has far too many negative connotations. and it prevents any conversation. AT ALL!!!
how can you reach people when they won’t even listen past the first word? you can NOT!
this is amerika! know your environment. don’t stuck with labels or other useless things. wanna save america? then dump the progressive label FOR ELECTIONS. it can ONLY hurt you. any other choice is purely idealistic nonsense that is actually detrimental to one’s goals. and you know I am correct about this.
this ain’t Canada. http://www.cpcml.ca/
an actual party in Canada. doesn’t win, but they are still around, which in it self is impressive.
this is amerika. secure local positions. hold them for F sakes!!! they serve as a local, and very powerful deterrent, to the power of money and control. have the local people decide who they want to elect, not money and power.
from local to state. and then HOLD THEM!!! getting my point? if you cant hold it, then what good are you? but if you can hold it, then the people will finally get a break and choose their own path, and not the corporation’s path.
in this case, you have to think small. because that is the most effective strategy.
and bloody hell, 2 is better than 1. start linking up with the greenies and the hippies. start linking with those who have similar outlooks without compromising your standards. what do you believe? it’s that easy. so get together with all these groups and get organized. set up a cohesive and flexible group. do it now. well before elections.
you don’t have the strong arm of money. so use the strong arm of the many. talk to the greenies. the hippies. the tree huggers (ie. people like me), and the youth (even if they can’t vote YET). they don’t care about “the gays” issue. live and let live.
I’m certain you already knew this. and I could probably keep going for a lot more points, but I think you get the overall idea. put out or get out (meaning, get it done, or get out of the way).
niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Got my FDL card and stickers in the mail yesterday, and I’m proud to be a card-carrying member! And many thanks to the anonymous donor who assisted me. I will be paying it forward very soon!
Thanks Jane and Ryan :-)
dog or dogs?
what kind is it (or they)?
I actually have to step out and vote and then go to work. But if you point me to a link I will join tonight when I get off work…I did try calling earlier….
Heh. I soooo want to crank call you right now!
But I’ll resist my evil impulses – this time.
If you go to Jane’s Facebook page, you can see photos of Lucy and Katie, Standard Poodles. Poodles with oodles. (And, still, RIP, dearest Kobe.)
Thanks so much demi. Hope you can make the next call!
Talking with new people who are joining. A lot of them aren’t commenters, but longtime readers anyway, so it’s the first chance I’ve gotten to talk with most of them.
It’s really great to hear someone’s voice.
Don’t be shy, give us a call! (202) 506-3907
Wrong number?
Citizen Hamsher:
I left you and Ryan a message please have someone contract me about the inquiry I made. I just got back from a local meeting with the state chair of the Democratic Party in Wisconsin and we’ve got some ideas that FDL can help facilitate with us for our recall candidate. (If we could get all the help we need from the state party I wouldn’t be askin’.)
I encourage all readers to become commenters and members. I know that many people are shy or hesitant to log on and add to our threads, but it would be wonderful to have (especially long time readers) join our discussions.
Jane – I won’t be calling because I want to leave the line open for New Members. I hope you’ve read some of my diaries. That’s my voice. *g*
This is more in response to what you said at 21, but I actually am a bit introverted; plus I’m already a member.
This place is really my home on the internet and I want to thank you for having created it.
Hey, We can accept a 5 dollar a month donation for the Friends level membership! You can use a debit card that will be charged on the same day each month. Call us up!
Ryan
here you go Hoss! https://members.firedoglake.com/join-month/
You’re awesome Demi.
Just felt that needed saying. Thanks for all you do here AND at that volunteering gig (which is just AWESOME IMO).
Citizen Hamsher:
That line keeps gettin’ forwarded…you must be gettin a whole lotta calls.
Citizen Ryan:
I want to increase my monthly contribution, Brother Ryan, but I need someone to respond to my message requesting information first.
Can ya get a little bigger cup, Jane? *g*
I was thinkin’ the same thing. LOL
OFG
Thanks a lot. Just doing my little bit to help.
Who’s got conference call capabilities on their cell? Ha.
I’m at work so I gots conf call capabilities. That would be a hoot. On speaker phone no less.
Ah ha. We could do that. But, I’ll just wait for the next webinar to hear your glorious voice. In my head you are a resonate bass.
None dare call it blog whoring, though it’s the best I’ve ever seen.
(P.s.: Over the phone Jane sounds a zillion times better than on TV or blog clips — and truly live.)
Basso Profundo
No doubt.
Go get ‘em, Jane and Ryan. What a great idea!
Call ‘em up folks. You can be a member of the most dynamic activist site on the web, and for as little as five bucks a month! Jeez… what are you waiting for?
Whiskey and cigarette bass with a southern accent.
And bad attitude
Who wouldn’t want to be a member of a group with such wonderful progressive news and activism. Not to mention brilliant PR work. This was indeed a great idea. Where are all the guys who had/have a heeuge crush on Jane? C’mon, folks. Call her up.
If I didn’t already have a crush, that would do it, fer sure.
That’s a BLOGGER SIZE cup, bitchez!
Agreed, Steely Dan. I’d join right away if they found away to make monthly debit card deductions.
In year 2 of no cost of living increases for SSDI.
They aren’t having any trouble debiting my debit card.
We can totally do that. Give us a call! (202) 506-3907.
You mean like this?
Hey Norske, I read your suggestion on the membership webinar the other night. People liked it.
707777777777777!
Nope, we can handle it. Thanks, Tuezday!
Ohhhh, pretty …. BIG!!!!
Heh, sometimes it can be a good thing.
Citizen Hamsher:
I left a message on the phone line, I have a request for information and direct action help that goes to the heart of what FDL is all about…quid pro quo, you return my call or email and I’ll bump up my monthly contribution…how’s that for negotiatin’? (Gampa Ole would shoot me!)
Hell, I could feed 2 people outta that thing. *g*
And 6 cats???
Not without a fight.
Ryan got me in.
Nice talking to you, Jane :)

Hey there, sent you an email. lets chat offline (well online) but through email!
Big love to Jane, Ryan, Reader,OFG, SD (of course) and everyone else. Gotta run. Laterz.
(And, best wishes to our dear Margaret.)
Am I already a member? I received a couple of messages from dakine01. Not sure of my status.
PS I just made a spice cake, so I’ll leave some slices on the side bar before I run out to do some errands, right over here. Jane, I’ll leave a coupla slices without frosting for your girls.
Okay, where are the dogs? If they’ve been shown I have consistently missed seeing them. Heck, I might join a second time if I get to see them! :^)
Citizen Ryan:
I just checked the window box that serves as the perch for the carrier pigions that haul my email…haven’t received your note…I will wait another 15 minutes and try again…if I don’t get your response then I’ll throw another torch. Thanx bro’.
One goggie on the floor between Jane and Ryan. She’s black and you can see the curve of her back against the hardwood floor.
OH!!! Nom. nom. nom. Delishiious! Thanks, demi!!!!!
Yep, that’s Katie. She says “hi.”
Hi, Katie!! Who’s a good girl? Katie is!
Looks more like she was sayin’ “Rub my tummy, Mom.”
Okay, that was AWESOME! Got to talk to some very cool people today. I was having some connectivity issues with my Skype, so I think we have to do this again tomorrow.
Whaddaya think?
That is a very safe bet, whether you can see Katie or not.
Good idea.
Gotta keep at it ’til you get it *right* … that’s all there is to it! :-)
I’m all for that but put the phone number block towards the top vice in the middle of the screen.
Heh, I was never any good at knowing what two-leggeds wanted but four-leggeds I got down.
Yes! In fact, one or two days a month would help to put you in front of people and let them see how dedicated you are. We already know, but those that have not been around very long may not be able to see it.
Whenever I catch you on the tv, I make an effort to let everyone here know so they can be a counted viewer. We support you in every way we can and the few times we get to see you and those behind the scenes is awesome.
Oh yeah. Jane, please consider coming down my way for the big Dem Convention in Charlotte.
Dang’it .. I joined last week .. if I had I waited, I could have talked to a real, live FDL celeb? .. oh woe is me … /w
Jane, glad you are doing this for recruitment purposes. In the meantime, you were going to call some of us who joined weeks ago, me included. Give a call!
Like the intent.
It might be an occasion for Walker to scream “outside agitators.”
“Because we won’t tell you the yellow stuff hitting your leg is rain.”
Loved it.
Jane, since you didn’t mention it in your post I want to add a link in the comments to the idea I discussed: No Confidence Protest Vote 2012 and the follow up FAQ post. I really hope the community will give this idea some serious consideration.
I joined the webinar last week and it was impressive! I am encourging my friends to join FDL…I was so impressed by all of the members last week that when Jane called my name to speak up I fumbled my way through the call:) I look forward to doing my part and the work being done is great! Thanks Jane! Greg B
