What’s on your mind tonite…?
Oooh, first? Err, “zed?”
Congrats, tj on the Zed…! ;-)
Good evening, Mr. Tuttle. I read the following at Democratic Underground on how to ‘punk’ those religious nuts who predict or believe the world will end on May 21st:
“Early in the morning of May 21st, gather up a bunch of your old clothes and go near your local evangelical churches and put little piles of them scattered about.
Make it interesting… for example:
- put a pile of clothes behind an abandoned stroller and put some baby clothes in the stroller under a bottle that is half full.
- put some clothes next to a mailbox, and then put a couple envelopes on top of them… maybe have a spilled cup of coffee next to them.
As long as we have to live amongst all the whackjobs who think the “Rapture” is coming to take them, we might as well be entertained. The looks on their faces when they realize they’ve been “left behind” will be worth it.”
My first ever, I think.
Everyone must either be watching the video (when was this series on? Guess I missed it completely, but I see Arlo’s white-haired, so can’t have been the ’70′s…) or reading Margaret’s posts about her new job from this afternoon.
To robert arend: Oh, that’s mean! But hysterical…hee hee.
Aloha CT! I loved that show “Byrds of Paradise”, especially Arlo’s character ;-)
I always pray that they will actually be ‘raptured’…! ;-)
Aloha, LL…! *g* How’s goes your retirement so far…?
Oh it’s wonderful, still wrapping my mind around the idea though – as I told a friend earlier, I’m setting my own pace right now :-)
Sweet vid, CT.
N thanks for your Nakba Update today, too.
Rock on hoss, I can’t stay but that vid is stickin to my ears solid.
*G*
Mahalo, Larue…! Nothing like some Slack key…! ;-)
That would solve a lot of problems for the rest of us, wouldn’t it?
LL, you retired?!! Congratulations of the highest order!
Evening CT and everyone.
It most certainly would…! ;-)
A native version of Jealous Guy…
Aloha, Loo Hoo…! How’s SoCal tonite…?
Hey Loo Hoo, yes I did – almost 2 weeks ago now, it’s fantastic! And thanks for that wonderful pic of the cake!
Hey – on a completely different subject – it’s a pleasure to this former Virginian to hear Ed Schultz properly pronounce Norfolk (NAH-fick). *g*
Although I lost my Va. accent over about two weeks of school teasing after moving to Indianapolis, I still cringe to hear people say Nor-FOKE. Shudder.
Hey tejan, I’m a current (and native!) Virginian! Where did you live? I’m in NoVA, west of DC. And I agree with you on that pronunciation…
Well, Ll, I didn’t realize that, either. Must’ve been thinking of someone else who retired last year…now, darn it, who was that?
Are you sleeping later? Or are you a natural lark?
Serious congratz LL .. stay active or you will morph into a beer-swillin’ RePug tho .. I swear it could happen .. /g
Great tunes Ctut .. thanks and great to see you .. so I missed the Margaret excitement .. so glad their is a light showing in the tunnel for her ..
I’m in Palm Springs and believe it or not it’s cold outside. Weird. How’s paradise tonight??
For years I was a “forced” lark I guess you could say – I worked a day shift for the past 10 years or so, and had to be up at 4:30 AM! Now I’m kind of all over the place; staying up late, sleeping late, getting up early if I feel like it or have an appt or something ;-)
Oh noes, that won’t happen to me, I promise! ;-)
It takes a while to get into the retirement groove, but believe me–you will love it. Don’t be surprised when you mix up which day it is!
Oh, with that nom, of course you are!
I was actually born in WVa, but by age 11 mos., my folks had moved to Staunton. I was six, nearly at the end of first grade when we moved to Indy.
I didn’t learn till much later that my dad’s side of the family actually has a long history in Augusta County, and generations of relatives, right through my grandmother’s cousins, are buried in a little church just outside of Staunton.
My mom’s side, OTOH, are Pennsylvania Dutch. My mom’s brother used to love to tease me by asking me to describe our trip from Staunton to York to visit, because we went through “Cleeyef-ton Fohj.” (Clifton Forge)
Some of my friends from work who’ve already retired have told me the same thing – I’m sure before long I’ll get into my new routine, and do lots of stuff; right now I’m still enjoying the novelty of spending all day in my PJ’s if I want to, lol ;-)
Wow that is so damn good .. have been a huge Ry-David fan forever but those guys have some kinda carmel soul that is delicious ..
I know what you mean. Riles me up if I have to be at a certain place at a certain time!
Oh, and another trivial pronunciation point – Staunton, for all you non-Virginians, is pronounced “Stan-ton.” Not “Staahn-ton.”
Town legend says it was named for a Lady Stanton, but the town fathers couldn’t spell…well, in the 18th century, nobody agreed on how to spell much of anything.
That’s a beautiful area of the state, love it down around Staunton, etc.
Some of those western and southwestern VA pronunciations are great! I was in Claypool Hill years ago, and the residents say “Clay-pull Hee-yull”!
Aloha, tearloch…! Glad you enjoyed them…! Here’s some Hapa…!
How’s BC tonite…?
Wow — 4:30 am! Quelle horreur!
I am such an owl! Getting up in the morning is torture for me. Going to bed is torture, even though it feels good once I’m in. Always have hated going to bed…not sure why.
And, here I am! Prolly lots of us here at LLN are owls, hmmm?
Totally. I spent half of the first six months of retirement in my pj’s. So decadent! Then I decided to give all my old teacher clothes away and have some fun.
Spring finally sprung and if it ever quits raining I shall mow the jungle I call a lawn .. maybe .. I may just go native ..
yep. Love the Shenendoah Valley; I imprinted on mountains, I guess, and still love them…though currently in the abstract. Texas Hill Country not far away, but they’re hardly the Alleghenies.
(And yes, I know, the Alleghenies are hardly the Rockies…but they are beautiful)
I detect a story there…what are you wearing now that you gave away the teacher clothes?
Wow, that is weird, Loo Hoo…! It was a gorgeous day, all day…! First in over a month it would seem…! ;-)
One of my grandmas was a real night owl, and my dad is too; I take after them a bit. I can relate about having trouble going to bed – sometimes I feel like a little kid: “I don’t WANNA go to bed!”
Sometimes an owl, sometimes a lark. Doesn’t matter now!
Nite all .. take care .. good to see you .. /s
I actually need to get some clothes, after wearing uniform for 27 years! Days off gear was always jeans, clogs, and weather-appropriate tops, don’t have any good clothes.
The Alleghenies and the Blue Ridge are beautiful and dramatic in their own way :-) I’m lucky where I live, not too far away from the Catoctins over in MD and close to the foothills of the Blue Ridge. Great for day trips.
g’night tearloch, good to see you too!
Just a newer, fresher wardrobe. No rules.
Are/were you a nurse? Can’t remember if I knew what you did for a living.
Sometimes when I’m trying to get dressed in the morning, I wish I wore a uniform…boring, but easy! I’ve been known to get to work and realize something doesn’t really quite match…or what I thought was navy is black, etc., etc.
Ah, nice there too. Camp David’s in the Catoctins, right?
In the mid-90′s I took my then-husband, native Tejano, from Baltimore (parents) to Charlottesville (to Monticello-he’s a Jefferson fan), and he was quite impressed with the beauty of my almost-native state.
I was a police and fire dispatcher, concentrating on fire and rescue for the last 7 years though. Uniform is great actually, you know what you’re wearing every day and saves wear and tear on your own clothes.
Oh, yes, I did know that…once. I remember a discussion about 911 calls and handling them from your end – coupla years ago, maybe?
LL, now you’ll have time to shop sales. It’s really pretty incredible what you can get if you have time to go through the racks during sales. Don’t hold back, girlie. Don’t feel like you need to dress like a retiree! Have fun and you’ll feel great. I’m having more fun with clothes and shoes than I’ve ever had.
Well, I’d best head off to bed, too. And give somebody else a chance to “talk.”
Goodnight all…thanks for the music, ctuttle!
Sweet dreams, tearloch.
Yes indeed, Camp David is in the Catoctins. If you’re familiar with US Rt 15, I’m not too far from there – and hence Gettysburg PA is only about 90 min. away!
I bet your ex really loved Monticello, that is quite a place. Just amazing, all the ingenuity in that house.
Great advice Loo Hoo, and I intend to do that – my sis just gave me a gift card for a store I really love, and I’m gonna go shopping soon :-)
I remember that! Trying to hide the navy sock when the other was black…
Pleasant dreams, tearloch…!
G’night tejan, great chatting with you…I feel like I’ve been “chatty Cathy” tonight as well!
Heh, good for you having fun. Absolutely no reason to wear old lady clothes or shoes when you don’t feel like an old lady!
nighters.
Agreed! And I’m on the younger end of the spectrum of retirees, 51 in June…way too young for the retiree look!
Oh, one more – yeah, he loved it. May I brag that it was about my 15th trip there? Most of the others were before I was six, tho’ – my parents’ friends who came to visit in Staunton all had to be taken there – we went so often, they were recognized by the guides and given a free pass.
Gettysburg, too – my dad was a history buff, especially Civil War…we visited Gettysburg at least half a dozen times on summer vacations.
My last trip with my dad was about 2002–we went to Antietam, for the first time for both of us.
And here I go yakking away again. Quieting down now.
Loo Hoo, are you in Palm Springs permanently now?
I retired in 2007. The first few months were odd, indeed. I’d get an automatically deposited retirement check that was strangely like, I thought, being paid without doing a damn thing to earn it. I was a bit lost, having been rather consequential as the longtime President of my local union. Somebody suddenly nobody. Where the phone used to ring at home throughout the day, even in the night, the phone went instantly silent. Nobody called me for help anymore.
It took quite awhile to adjust, to find a new purpose.
*heh* How to play a uke…!
Congrats, LoudonLib! Hope you can afford taking some time to decide what to do next.
Sweet dreams, tj…!
My wife retired in 2007. Got bored. Got a part time job. Didn’t keep her busy enough, so she got a full-time job. Now, in the fall, she might have that full-time job and the old part-time job. And she loves it.
Thank you ET! I think I already know what I want to do next – be a bank teller again, part-time. My first “real” job, for about 6 years, and I loved it. Taking the summer off though! I’ll get serious again more towards fall…
I’m one of those public service pensioners that the wingers hate so much, so that monthly check will carry me for a while ;-)
Aloha, ET…! How’s Wasilla tonite…?
Wow! That is good stuff CT!
I tell you! Are you close to retirement, tej?
wow great video tut
The Sweety would love me to get out from under her feet by getting a part-time job. I might appreciate the extra money, too, but with the terrible employment situation around here, I don’t want to compete with a younger person who certainly needs that job and income more than me. Work would be like a hobby for me, but a necessity to somebody in desperate need of employment.
So I write for OpedNews, stories for Circle 8 & TTM books and an online Sci-Fi mag….
Some more Ledward…! ;-)
No, I’m back and forth. Seriously thinking about moving here, but I need to try out a summer first. Guess they can be pretty brutal. I am seriously considering it, though, and renting out my big house and living in this tiny one bedroom…
Aloha, Suz…! Mahalo, how’s your little Inlet tonite…?
Warm. This is my first week of summer break, so I’m doing spring cleanup and getting ready to garden.
I got to conduct a Russian Pops Concert Saturday evening. Shannyn Moore narrated Peter and the Wolf. Here’s the Youtube.
Love it, he’s brilliant :-)
I know exactly what you mean. So busy, then suddenly so free. I felt guilty about the (greatly reduced) paycheck too. At first…then I relaxed and looked back at the forty years I’d worked.
hiya Suz!
That’s busy enough, eh? I’ve got three more years before I can consider pulling up stakes as a prof. And I might keep going then, though. I don’t want to leave if I’m still inspiring kids, but don’t want to stay if I’m not.
Yeah a youtube! Thanks ET.
Social Security will pick up for some of that reduction. I’m a few years away from that, but I’ll take it early in spite of the lower amount just to make sure I get some of what I paid into all those years before I die…
Aloha, homeroid…! ;-)
Our duck and grandpa were fabulous.
Did the Israeli Navy flinch Monday morning?
Peter and the Wolf is a childhood favorite of mine :-) I remember listening to an old 78 rpm record of it when I was little.
Bookmarking your link so I can watch all three parts at my leisure; I did check out about the first 5 minutes and the orchestra sounds great, and you look good in a tux! ;-)
I have an eagle eye for signs of a talented writer. You caught my attention awhile ago. Your experiences living in Alaska, your brief depictions of that part of the world and your life. The 21st Century could well benefit from the works of its own Jack London….
You’re definitely an inspiration to me, ET…! ;-)
doing ok today tut — had sunshine even and the forking winds died down… weather dood is predicting showers tomorrow and then (gasp) 4 dry days in a row
wow dood…. wow
hey ll — live without alarm clocks is a wunnerful wunnerful thang
— if I’m not relieved of having to cover the Palin Zombies soon, it will be more like HP Lovecraft, Robert.
The french horn wolves were awesome, too.
i’e got them qued up on utube to play one right after another
It is, it is! I even turned the ringer off on the phone in my room…but then I missed a call from my Dad earlier, oops…
Let me know if you think it’s good enough to post at MyFDL Art Saturday.
oops. after i retired, i was able to confirm that my normal body clock is set to a swing shift — i naturally wake up around the crack of noon and get sleeping at oh dark hundred.
et – where did video #2 go?
Truth.
Don’t let your state suffer under too much identification with Palin. When you retire, write about all the good folks and beauty of life in Alaska. From what I read of your Palinless depictions of Alaska, there is still many marvelous and adventurous stories to tell about the real Alaska….
Oh absolutely, people will love it and it’s perfect for Art Saturday!
It is, Ed*ard! Please do.
Woo Hoo…! Congrats, Loo Hoo…! *g*
I may be trending towards that myself; back when I used to work 3 to 11′s I felt that was the perfect shift for me. But if I intend to go back to work this fall I’d better not go too crazy ;-)
Much applause. I bookmarked in favorites….
i agree with ll — perfect for art sunday
3 to 11 isn’t bad.. i was working 4p to 3a and that is harder to bounce to day shift from…
I’ve been watching The Freedom Riders on PBS American Experience. What awesome courage them young people had back then. What ever happened to courage like that?
Don’t even shy away.
Oh yeah, that would be a tough transition for sure. I think my most hated shift was the old 2-2-4: two days, two nights, 4 days off. The days off were great, but it was hard as hell to swing from a day shift to a night shift the very next day.
Thanks.
Suzanne – I got reel two to load.
*shrudder* my dept considered itself ‘progressive’ and didn’t have those kinda forking schedules altho neighboring agencies did when i first started. when i hired on in 80, we had yearly signups for a year long shift — no bouncing except maybe that one shift when ya made the change.
i’m not seeing it at your blog but found it on the recommended next at utube…. am playing 2 now…
I don’t know, but I wish we’d see that kind of courage again…
That is progressive! My agency finally went to permanent day or night shifts, 12 hrs, back in ’94. The only bad thing was that lately our asst. director insisted on making transfers every 6 months, for “more well rounded” employees…everyone was in turmoil all the time with child care and family issues, etc. Last I heard, before I left, that was going to cease.
we ended up switching from 9/5′s after the fisa change and went to first 4/10′s and then 4/11′s… the 4/10 had 3 days off and the 4/11′s was a 4 on/4 off shift. through out it all, the only unit that bounced was traffic and they switched from days to swings quarterly but that was eliminated when we went to 4/11′s. now its all team policing and working with the same dispatchers and same beat partners all working the same days and having the same days off.
Well I’d better split, it is rather late here! CT, thanks for the great tunes, and thanks to ET as well for Peter and the Wolf…will be looking for it on MyFDL!
Oh! Forgot to say – I received my FDL card in the mail today, w00t!
G’night all :-)
Missed that I got the century!
Sweet dreams, LL…!
Well, I shall leave ya’ll with a Hawaiian Lullaby…!
Mahalo for the great conversations tonite…! Aloha Oe…! *g*
When I was in the USAF, the Security and LE folks worked “3s” (3 day shift, 3 swing shift, 3 Mids, and 3 off).
Of course, I also had a friend that the PTB were trying to screw with (he was a technician in the Comm Squadron) and he was working “2s” – he would go to work at midnight on Sunday night get off at 8AM Monday, midnight Monday night off at 8AM Tuesday, go in at 8AM Wednesday off at 4PM, 8AM Thursday off at 4PM, then go in at 4PM Friday off at midnight and 4PM Saturday off at Midnight until midnight Monday to start the next cycle.
