The conventional wisdom, in reports from Washington, D.C., to Georgia, is that the answer will be no. Top campaign staffers from his 2008 GOP primary challenge haven’t heard from Huck, and in many cases have signed up with other candidates.
A particularly scathing account by Andrew DeMillo for the Associated Press explains a likely motivation for bowing out:
Mike Huckabee always had an eye for business opportunities. As governor of Arkansas, he churned out books on topics ranging from youth violence to weight loss to supplement his official salary. As a Republican presidential candidate, he ducked off the campaign trail in 2008 at the height of the race to do paid speeches, including one in the Cayman Islands.
Since he left office, Huckabee has made himself a multitasking, moneymaking conglomerate, with a Fox News Channel show, a nationally syndicated radio program, speaking engagements, book deals, novelty sales and even a newly launched series of children’s videos.
… Huckabee had hinted months ago that he was reluctant to give up his media empire, saying in a February interview: “The day I say, ‘I’m running,’ that’s the day I don’t have an income.“
By the way, you may have heard a little in the past day or two about that “series of children’s videos.” If you haven’t (or even if you have), check out TBogg’s précis on the subject. And also check out the video above by Rachel Maddow, which offers plenty of snarky humor but also some chilling examples of Huckabee & Co. seeking to reshape young viewers’ attitudes regarding history — not just via passing references, like reducing the dark McCarthyite blacklisting era to a glib aside that Ronald Reagan “worked against Communism in Hollywood,” but an explicit instruction that the videos’ content “isn’t always the same as what we read in books or see on TV… but so what? We know the truth, and that’s good enough for us!”
There you have it in a nutshell — the conscious indoctrination of children into shunning any information that isn’t ideologically approved, avoiding the reality-based community in favor of tribal thinking. All of the far right’s adult tactics (lavishly funded think tanks, the war on science and public information, incessantly “working the refs” in the media, unlimited campaign spending) are set up neatly by that simple message to kids.
If Orwell hadn’t been writing so early in the age of television, he undoubtedly would have foreseen something like this. In the meantime, if Rupert Murdoch ever sets up a Fox children’s cartoon network (he hasn’t already, has he?), he’ll have some core programming ready to go.
And until that time comes, Mike Huckabee will be raking in a few bucks here and there from the faithful.
If you listen closely, somewhere out there, Sarah Palin is gnashing her teeth.

This may be the best news I have heard in a while. Huckabee as really the only one in the Gooper pack that worried me. He has cred with the base and is still presentable enough that he can pass as sane and reasonable. For the rest, the base hates everyone who has a shot at the general.
I guess the conservatives won’t get their “savior” candidate just yet then. cHuckabee was the only one that could have cruised to the nomination.
I was going to say,
Huck: “Why should Sarah Palin get all the scratch?”
But this
is better.
Millions of Americans share your pain, asshole.
And, as I said above, had a shot at the general.
Maybe I’d feel sorry for him if he didn’t have legions of believers begging to write him checks. Poor cHuck.
Yep, that was a spot on comment DrD. cHuckabee was the only one I would have thought had any chance at the general as well. Maybe JEB but that’s far from clear. The Bush name is still too toxic I think.
OTOH, Newt Gingrich has figured out how to make running-for-president(or is her?) into an income-producing scam.
Damn it. I’m going to fret and worry all weekend now. Gotta give myself the best chance I can of getting this job Monday without blowing it.
Guess it’s true, then: the powers that be have decreed that Obama will be a two-term servant of the moneyed elite. Oh, well, I guess that frees me up to vote for Ren Hoek.
If not, then the simple possibility of 3 presidents from one family in a quarter-century ought to be enough.
I mean, didn’t we revolt against royal dynasties? There’s too much of that at lower levels of government going on as it is.
Who?
Suspense sucks, doesn’t it? Have no fear, we’ll keep your mind busy.
I honestly think Newtie is just fundraising. In fact, out of the entire Regressive field, announced and expected, I think the only one that actually wants to be president is Willard and I stand a better chance of getting the Republican nomination than he does.
Ren Hoek.
Mitt could possibly win the general, but too many ong the Gooper base hate him either for Romneycare or because he is Mormon. Maybe Pawlenty, but he is floundering so badly now that it is pretty clear that he is not ready for prime time yet. I think you are right about the toxicity factor for Jeb, who might otherwise be able to win the general.
Triply so when my whole future seems to be riding on this one shot. To use a baseball metaphor, this is the hanging fast ball that I can crank out of the park but so many things also have to be working and there are some circumstances I have no control over that have to come together too. Think I should mention it’s my birthday to the interviewer?
Exactly. Mittens could beat Obama but he’s not going to get the chance to run against him. Especially after his disastrous health care defense this week. Just lame.
To our friendly neighborhood conspiracy theorists: This is what a real psyop looks like.
LOL.
Btw, I saw your post yesterday about the scam job posting – woke up this morning vaguely remembering a dream: opening a large box looking for a job (it’s a dream!) myself, and an ugly winged critter flutters out…then I realize it’s a scam job, and the box is Pandora’s box, full of nothing but scams.
I find myself suspicious of many of them, especially the ones that appear to have been written by non-native-English speakers. There are some strange ones out there.
Yep. Newt and Palin are just in it for the publicity and have no interest in really running. It would interfere with their grifting.
Good question. Seeing as how I’ve apparently failed all my interviews, I’m not going to venture a guess as to the right answer.
On edit: Hmmm. “It’s my birthday! Oh, really? How old are you today?”
My gut feeling therefore – nope.
I think I’m going to work it in if it feels right.
Yikes! There’s something I hadn’t considered.
i would say that after being offered the job at the end of the interview would be the perfect time to say its your birthday!
Reminds me of the one about when the Okies traveled to California it raised the IQ in both places, so it will be when the Huckster goes from politics to teevee.
Ding!
But then, what do I know?
Yeah, I didn’t either, at first.
But y’know, I tend to overthink things.
All I know is that Neko and I need a job….bad!
we are gonna have a huge fucking party monday nite to celebrate your getting that job margaret.. i feel it in my gut…
Agreed Huckabee is the Most electable GOPer maybe not the most dangerous GOPer but still dangerous enough.
Thanks. I hope so. My guts just feel twisted up.
I’ll drink to that.
job
I’m going to lie down I think. If I can’t sleep, I’ll be back. if I can, Oya!
g’nite margaret
He is plenty dangerous. He is a Teabaggger leaning Talibangelical, but cleans up pretty good for TV and can actually speak English in complete sentences.
If Huckabee does not run then who among the D listers should we start researching? Mitt is Mormon and has Romney care killing him in the Primaries. Newt I won’t bother with until he can get 25% of the GOP primary vote. Sarah and Michelle are the most dangerous but if they both run they split the crazy pie equal and so far they are both not running. Ron Paul’s anti union is dead in the water, Trump needs a new Birther issue.
I like to speculate on the candidates but I am seeing nothing hands for the rest of these guys.
Y’know, Murdoch, Cock Bros., etc. – the wingnut welfare lord complex – have their stable of “talent” in such gravy one way or another, that actually running for office and actual governing are simply hassles and a big step down from the literally infinite lucre to be had in the wingnut advocacy and carpology industry. Sarah is (or was) the Madonna of it, Huck seems more the affable savvy Merv Griffin. But they all know where the happy tit is.
I honestly don’t know who they’ll run. Who among em would bother? Plus who can out-sexy Obama, it can’t be done. The best they could do was frickin Sarah.
Whole thing meaningless anymore anyway.
Night. Sweet dreams.
Huck’s dropout, Mitt’s Mormon problem and Trump’s problems leaves Palin as the evangelical choice. Go Sarah!
I agree he is dangerous because he can get elected but Sarah is more dangerous granted she can only get elected if Obama gets caught with a dead hooker in his car but even at those low odds I don’t want to take chances.
A drop-dead economy is worse than a dead hooker, no?
Sarah could not get elected dog catcher running against a dead goatfucker. She has horrible negative ratings with everybody except a narrow segment of the Republican base. Last I saw she had like a 20% approval rating.
Not with Palin’s negative numbers.
The Fundies seem to be more popular than the corporate GOPers. Look at Wisconsin look at how popular/s Rep Ryan’s corporate GOP budget is.
Will the Corporate GOP and Karl Rove rally their wallets behind Sarah or Michelle? I kind of doubt that so I am at a loss to guess who the new GOP front runner will be.
Once the GOP starts running Newt and Sarah they gave up running candidates who maybe could win a general election.
We have that now and over $4 a gallon gas and Mitt and Huckabee still could not beat Obama in the polls and they were leading the GOP pack.
I doubt Huck will give up the Fox News gig to run.
folks two years is a VERY VERY long time. and a lot can happen in that time.
things that could make Palin or Bachmann, of course with a “stable” VP, seem OK.
are we forgetting about 2010 and how quickly people forget about the last decade?
you put Huckabee, with Palin as VP, and they could pick up some numbers. amerika has proved time and time again, qualifications and standards do NOT matter.
Ok Ok normally the dead hooker is the kiss of death in politics but when was the last time in my lifetime at least has any Dem had to consider a well known frontrunner with 20% approval ratings?
Sarah is dangerous and I concede Obama could be caught with a dead goat in his car and still beat her.
I still don’t want her as the GOP nominee.
Words fail to describe a scenario where Sarah beats Obama but anything is possible.
Time for me to toddle off. Have to get up in front of god, Tom Brokaw, and everybody in the morning and hood my new Ph.D. without strangling him. Take care all.
g’nite dr dick
Add in 15% unemployment and $5 a gallon gas and a dead Goat in Obama’s car. Then add in the GOP promising to have the government create jobs.
Sarah gets medication and Huckabee makes Washington State and the GOP’s law and order voters forget with the help of mind control drugs that he paroled a guy who upon getting out killed several cops.
I got a better chance of wining the lottery, sleeping with Jessica Alba, and finding a way to block all the spam that comes into my junk box forever.
But yes anything is possible and with Sarah I still don’t like those odds.
Here is a great SNL short for all Republicans. Love it!
Oops, I missed Magaret. I wandered off for a bit, reading the complications Boehner got himself and a big law firm into, hiring them to defend DOMA without actually having any money to pay them. Hee Hee.
Of course, these days, we’re always looking Forward not Backward, so my glee is tempered by the knowledge that there will probably be no consequences.
I can’t believe I miss the seventies, but those were the days of Sam Ervin and Barbara Jordan, and Republican AG’s resigning rather than do terrible things for their Pres. Somehow we now have a House and Senate full of weak-kneed spineless folks who can’t stand up for anything, and who confuse cruelty with “responsibility.”
Hey! Is this thing broken?
speechless!
Pretty funny, yes?
hey ce — must be date night or something
It is so hard to stay awake for LLN!
Yes, might even top Justin Timberlake’s finest professional moment, Dick in a Box
I said ‘might’…
Well, heck, you sent everybody over to watch the vid. Takes time!
(I kept looking to see if everyone had to gone to LLN)
lln goes well with breakfast too :)
OMG that is our favorite all time for SNL Short. BTW have you ever seen Justin Timberlake’s Madison Garden show? It is really fabulous!
Oh gosh, not for me.
I haven’t, but more than one person said it was terrific.
Truth said, I never planned to watch it. But once it started and we watched it on, I think HBO, I was hooked at the first. Really!
Timberlake would not have been on my radar as doing a must-see show, but the number of people who yelled about how good it is is a wake-up.
Since then, really, I have a whole new respect for Justin Timberlake. True!
all things being equal …
but this is amerika, and anything could happen.
official unemployment will never get to 15% (although unofficial is already past that), because the powers that be aren’t stupid. pure evil, but not stupid. they know as long it’s just 1 in 10, the other 9 won’t care. the other 9 have their own problems and they don’t want to be like the 1.
also, 1 in 10 is insufficient numbers to really cause a problem. so they will keep the official under 15%.
classic bully tactics. beat down the 1, and imply to the other 9 that this could happen to them and their families. very very effective.
even in Egypt, the problem was high unemployment, AND other contributing factors, ie. high food prices, and other high prices for BASIC living needs.
as I said, evil, not stupid. they know this.
and it’s working. it’s working really well. the wealth transfer has gone off without a hitch. frankly, if it wasn’t pure evil, I would be impressed.
Huckabee is very bad news.
Huckabee is down on abortion; but then, he is also down on women who have babies. You can’t win with this woman-hating corn ball. P.S. I don’t know what all the flap is about the rapper who visited Obama. They claim he is a mysogynist. Truthfully, he’s got nothing over the right wing of the Grand Old Party.
