Why does the Pope want to redistribute wealth and destroy the US economy?
Attention media: since Newt and the Frothy Mixture are running as the True Devout Catholics of the Republican Party, could you please ask them what their response is to this Papal decree?
The Pope reached across the aisle of all denominations and all nations to address the issues of global warming.
In a statement on the Vatican website, Pope Benedict XVI made a bold “call to action” for “all people in all nations.”
Here’s the beginning of the statement.
We call on all people and nations to recognise the serious and potentially irreversible impacts of global warming caused by the anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants, and by changes in forests, wetlands, grasslands, and other land uses. We appeal to all nations to develop and implement, without delay, effective and fair policies to reduce the causes and impacts of climate change on communities and ecosystems, including mountain glaciers and their watersheds, aware that we all live in the same home. By acting now, in the spirit of common but differentiated responsibility, we accept our duty to one another and to the stewardship of a planet blessed with the gift of life.
Doesn’t the Pope know that global warming is a secular socialist conspiracy mastermined by Al Gore and George Soros?
As for Newt, he recently proposed abolishing the EPA because of its “attempts to regulate greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, and thereby the entire American economy” and in 2008, wrote, ““I do not know if the climate is warming or not.”
In 2009, Santorum wrote,
“It is one thing for ideologically driven science to indoctrinate children in classrooms. It is another for politicians to use science to destroy national economies and redistribute global wealth. I refer, of course, to the latest scientific non-controversy, man-made global warming.”
Since both Newt and the Frothy Mixture are directly at odds with the teaching of the Vatican, I assume they’ll either recant their previous statements and join the Pope in working to enact policies that curb carbon emissions — or henceforth refrain from receiving Communion.

I am sure that the MSM will be on this very shortly…
Any minute now…
Wait for it…
Er…
The Pope left out any reference to abortion or gays so Newt and that other idiot will say they’re not bound by his decree.
Believe it or not there was a time when the church stood for social justice.
Pffft! Newtie is about as religious as I am. The only difference is he pretends to be to exploit it to his advantage. As for Frothy Mixture, he’s just insane and will no doubt be soon calling for a military assault and the overthrow of whomever got into the Vatican and took over for the real Pope.
~ der popenfuhrer has really got out in front of this issue ~ /s
What’s that, Frothy?
Yeah, NaziPope is really changing the world, one cow fart at a time.
I’ve applied for fourteen jobs so far this week. Of them, I am more than qualified for all and it’s a matter of sorting out the bigots from the tolerants. So far one has turned out to be a scam, by “offering a job” and involving a fake “I.Q. test”, which turned out to be nothing more than deciding if a series of pictures are real or photoshopped. Then you enter your carrier, your phone number and agree to pay $9.99 to be “graded”. Of course I didn’t fall for it and I even wrote back and told them what I thought about their lame attempt at scamming money from me and went on to ask if I passed the “intelligence test”. That’s just fucking evil though.
“Popenfuhrer” XD
I hope so. Then the Pope can turn them all into…newts.
I’m confused: Which part of this statement is supposed to be the funny part?
Capt. Kirk: I am the Kirk, the creator?
Nomad: You are the creator.
Capt. Kirk: You’re wrong! Jackson Roykirk, your creator, is dead. You’ve mistaken me for him. You are in error.
Spock: Your logic is impeccable, Captain. We are in grave danger.
They’ll pay about as much attention to it as they did to both JP II’s and B VXI’s stated opposition to the invasion and continued occupation of Iraq. Which is to say: Nowhere near enough for conservative American Catholics to feel any sort of discomfort whatsoever.
However, it does give us the chance to remind everyone that Cons can be pick-and-choose “cafeteria Catholics” too. (That being the label the CathCons stick onto liberal Catholics who favor birth control, ordaining women, etc. “They want to pick and choose the doctrines they obey!” Well lookiee here, so do you Cons!)
Well hmmmm… verrrry interesting, as I think Sergeant Schulz on Hogan’s Heros used to say.
OTOH we have known pederast-enabler/hider, the NaziRatzi, actually saying something, uh, useful & even more impressive: factual.
OTOH we have known so-called very devout Roman Catholic US pols, who suck at the corporate titty & run scurrying far far far away from anything having to do with good stewardship of planet earth. After all, Mother Nature sure ain’t giving those pols any cold hard ca$h.
Oh what to do? Why I’m sure the Koch Brothers or similar will make it very easy to ignore the NaziRazi Pederast-enabler on this one. As Cuba Gooding, Jr, famously said: Show me the MONEY!!!!
I put a ‘recommend’ on David Swanson’s interview with Harvey Wasserman – a long but important read. It is only viewable so far if you go to another diary (such as the one on the New Progressives). I mention it here because Harvey outlines positive aspects of the antinuclear movement and all efforts to deal with climate change, from Pericles and Athenian empirical strategies on – well worth the time to read and just an excellent interview David. I hope someone else will take the time to recommend it forward. Especially after all the time we have spent considering the Fukishima ongoing catastrophe.
LOL -
I suspect you are more religious than Newt.
Seems one can cheat on wife as a Baptist who didn’t have time to worry about the morality of his actions because he was busy worrying about the nation, but there is no cheating as a Roman Catholic – who knew?
:-)
Bwahahahahaha.
Yeah, the same people that believe that the earth is 5000 years old and we’re supposed to trust their science on climate change? You have got to be fucking kidding me.
Whether the climate warms or cools, the science should be devoted to adapting to the changes not trying to prevent or minimize them. I may not go to church on Sunday because of this and if I do go, I’m not giving any money.
Uh, the Catholic Church doesn’t teach that the Earth is 5,000 years old. And the science isn’t coming from them.
Nothing back yet from the temp agency? I admire your perseverance — not that you have a choice, of course.
My sister is also job hunting, and ran into one of those scams not long ago. Evil bastards!
But the R.C.s did excommunicate Gallileo & didn’t reinstate him for 400 years. I also think I gathered from the ether somewhere that the current pope thought it was a mistake to reinstate Gallileo, though the memory is so vague, even I wouldn’t take my word on that.
Beat me to it, BT. I have no use for the Catholic church (or any church) but we should at least try to be accurate.
What does the trial of Galileo in the 17th century have to do with anything?
“Whether the climate warms or cools, the science should be devoted to adapting to the changes not trying to prevent or minimize them.”
Wuh…? I guess you agree with Gingrich and Santorum.
Whether the R.C.s have any respect for science.
Not so much when they are as ideologically driven as the fundies are today. The R.C.s pick & choose their own science that is comfortable for them. Gallileo happens to be the most outstanding example, but is hardly the only one.
Stop making sense! /s
I think Newt stopped caring about living up to his faith by the time he got to his second divorce. He thinks that what people say matters more than what they do, anyway. Or does he think that not bothering to practice what you preach just applies to him?
I’m sorry, that makes absolutely no sense. It’s just a smear.
By your logic, Americans are all racists and sexists because the original Constitution had no respect for civil rights and women.
I mean: over 400 years ago. Really?
The Nuns taught me evolution, thank you very much. Get your facts right, please.
In any event, you seem to have missed the entire point of the post, which is that Santorum and Gingrich have to make a choice.
Well, let’s see: Newty is a serial sex abuser and Frothy, believes in rights for living corpses…… seems very much in keeping with Vatican traditions.
Classy.
I’m not going to pretend I suddenly give a crap what Pope Rat says.
Stopped clock right twice a day and all that rot.
Clearly, you’ve missed the entire point of the post.
Copernicus was Catholic. Galileo was forced to stop popularizing his discoveries before he fully understood them.
In any case, bashing Catholicism is not productive.
(Agreeing with BT here.)
The Pope is taking the position that all of us are responsible to take care of our planet, but he’s not saying we should tax green house gases. That’s silly. There is always a balance, so it’s a call for us as a individual person and Nations to be more responsible. This is not Dogma, or a Doctorine of the Church, so not all Catholics are required to follow the Popes statement, but all Catholics are required to listen to what the Pope says and think about why he feels it’s best for the world, and how we can best help him in reaching this goal.
Yep, they taught me evolution, too. No problem for them, but my stepdad threw a fit! Seems he was old enough not to have that teaching (when was that trial, anyway? I believe stepdad was born in or around 1900!) Nuns called it “mitigated evolution” meaning that at some point, He put a soul into man and separated him from the animals. Works for me.
Nobody teaches that the Earth is 5,000 years old. A man named James Ussher “dated” the Earth to October 23rd, 4004 BC. This is the root of Young Earth creationism. Maybe before you go questioning peoples’ facts, you should get yours straight. Just a suggestion. Anthropogenic climate change is real and it is happening. No matter how fat Al Gore is.
I first got interested in science at St Francis Cabrini elementary school. They saved the creationism for Sunday school.
Just the old white males, as I’ve read here many times before.
I think you would enjoy Pullman’s “His Dark Materials”.
David Dayen has another fresher cross-post ready: Medicaid Pays for the Majority of Elderly in Nursing Homes
Looks like the Catholics are also taking exception to BONER:
that is literally one of the most ignorant things i have ever read. You truly know nothing of Catholicism.
Hard times bring out predators like lobbyists at a congressional picnic. Sorry you had to go through that.
This post isn’t about Catholocism. It’s about Newtie and Santorum. Maybe you should try cleaning your
glassesbrain and reading it again. Your first comment in a month and you use it to remind us of how ridiculous your comprehension skills are.Dallas isn’t the only place where there’s a gulf between what goes on Saturday night and what’s talked about on Sunday morning.
Being an observant Catholic can be superficially defined as attending church regularly, a recordable event. A more substantive definition would involve actually following the church’s precepts and teachings – “in thought, word and deed,” as the catechism used to say.
Based on his conduct in public office, I would describe Mr. Boehner as a regular attender at church.
I’m hep. Most of them are what I call Sunday Christians. They spend an hour in church, sometimes two and then spend the rest of the week sinning it up so they’ll have something to confess, (and thus be absolved of), next Sunday. The hypocrisy is what drove me away from the Catholics. Reason drove me away from religion.
Sorry but the RC is my piñata as it is thoroughly divorced from its moorings (how many thousands of years and counting?) yet continues to Vogue for us as if that’s not the case and even has left us meticulous documentation of that fact.
What does Dallas have to do with anything btw?
Great link, Margaret!
Exactly.
I notice that you didn’t say it was wrong or untrue. But nice try, trollie.
Wow, BT, the trolls are really after you today! Means you must be doing something right. Congratulations — you’re a legitimate threat to them!
The funny thing is that conservative Catholics like to hang the “cafeteria Catholic” epithet onto liberal Catholics, when it’s obvious that they too are “cafeteria Catholics” — they just pick out different chunks of doctrine to heed. They’re all about anything that restricts women’s freedoms under the guise of respecting life, but not all that keen on truly respecting life by stopping or preventing wars, particularly wars of choice or plunder.
That’s right.
Torture, war, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid immigration — now climate change.
The corporate media never challenge conservative political candidates to show how their religious claims relate to actual religious teachings…and neither do most churches, although they have the greatest investment in the issue. Christian church leaders should be pointing out how the policies promoted by politicians who claim to be “Christian” candidates ignore 99 percent of Christ’s teachings. Where are our Martin Luthers?
My question is what will the six Catholics that have a chokehold on the Supreme Joke do? Will they reverse their anti-global warming rulings? Will they be judicial activists to implement the Papal program?
I find it incredibly ironical that a minority group of religious people (less than 24 percent of Americans are nominally Catholic) control 66 percent of the joke.
It will be at least 30 years before the Catholics can be reduced to their proper portion of representation.
This assumes that the snakehandlers, religious undershorts mob and the general run of believers do not find out that the Supreme Joke is composed of 6 Catholics and 3 Jews.
That all laws will conform to minority religious beliefs is something that a real democracy could not, would not or should not tolerate.
Separation of church and state? Not.
Sharia law is the main distraction by the nitwits right now. They are really doing their nut over Islam now. What will they do when they realize that all of the American legal system is controlled by Catholics?
Nothing, I just spent a week there one day and experienced a few of its hypocrisies first hand. I found them exemplars of the species.
The church hierarchy isn’t much into the poverty thing either, except for parishioners, junior clergy and a lot of nuns. The chastity thing sometimes seems elective, too, rather than compulsory, but then the church did give rise to the concept of Jesuitical distinctions so fine they would humble Denny Crane.
As with all big institutions, the hypocrisy is most often directed at protecting institutional power at whatever cost to consistency or ethics.
There are nine jurists on the Supreme Court whose religions are Catholic and Jewish. But I agree that the Court’s most conservative members are conservative Catholics, who, like caricatures of Jesuits, are the soldiers of institutional power more than models of their saviour’s behavior. That belies their nominal separation of church and state, and is arguably an insult to the teachings of their faith.
I wholeheartedly agree that the “Shariah law” meme has been photocopied and passed around to all the wingnuts coast to coast. If more than two Muslims meeting in prayer is a conspiracy involving possible terrorism, what’s a minyan of Jews or a Catholic catechism class? The gross stereotyping is evil and fruitless, except to market prejudice to the unthinking and demand unaccountable power in return.
As to Catholics, I do not see the Catholics controlling anything – the rich and corporate control us and our assets and taxes and laws- other sub-groups control little of anything else.
The getting the left to attack sub-groups is the classic ploy of the rich to stay in power. Besides folks on the FDL board come to religious discussions with different levels of knowledge alongside their basic biases – which is why it is pointless to join their comments – their opinion will not change and one can not get anyone to study what they do not wish to study – and everyone – on all sides – is certain they are correct.
As to sharia law – the Tenn law is just saying that planning a terrorist act while in a religious building does not get the terrorist planning forgiven under state law as religious freedom. Being in the building or at a meeting is not a crime in this proposed law – it is the planning of the terrorist act. I just wish it covered the kill the doctor anti-abortion crowd. Does seem unfair to limit it to Islam.
“Vellly intellesting” was the catchphrase of Arte Johnson’s Nazi soldier on Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In.
“I know nothing!” was Sgt. Schulze’s.
Just sayin’.
