Although I’ve been posting somewhat intermittently for the past few weeks, I’ve been working diligently behind the scenes on the new FDL membership program. And I’m delighted to announce that next Wednesday night, May 11, at 7pm ET, we’re launching the first interactive webinar planning session with members to hear their ideas about shaping the future of FDL.
Two weeks ago, we had our first membership webinar, in which Marcy Wheeler moderated a discussion between David House, Col. Anne Wright and FDL members to discuss Bradley Manning’s transfer to Leavenworth. Despite having spent the weekend moving, Marcy was as sharp and informative as always. The response we got was overwhelmingly positive.
So now that we’ve kicked the webinar tires with a relatively simple format, week we want to shake things up a bit and start having a conversation with members about the role they feel FDL should play in the 2012 election and beyond. What aspects should we focus on? What issues should we try to influence? What positions should we take? How should we structure our coverage?
In order to ensure that a representative selection of ideas and suggestions are heard, this will be the format:
1. Members should submit their suggestions to FDLmembers AT gmail DOT com by midnight on Monday May 8, and indicate whether they’d be willing to read their idea on the call or if they’d rather the moderator (me) do it for them.
2. The FDL membership board will collect all the suggestions and group them into categories, then choose representatives for discussion at the webinar.
3. On the conference call:
- Jon Walker will gives a presentation on Progressive electoral strategies through history, and systemic problems in the US electoral system.
- Members whose ideas have been selected by the board as representative, and want to read them, will be called upon to do so.
- I’ll read the suggestions of members whose ideas have been selected but don’t want to read them.
- We will open up the floor for discussion.
4. The goal of the call is not to come to hard conclusions, but rather identify areas for further group inquiry. Based on what we hear from members, we’ll invite guests to present at future webinars in more depth about topics of interest. If people want to hear about campaign finance reform strategies, or the ballot initiative process, or upcoming redistricting battles or state legislative races, we’ll go out and recruit experts to come and speak to those issues.
5. At the end of the webinar series, the board will draw up a survey for submission to members including the ideas that are both a) achievable within the resources of FDL and b) supported by the majority of participants on the conference calls.
I’m very excited about this series because I think it’s a way to start engaging our members in a conversation about systemic problems and solutions, as well as long-term strategies for FDL. It isn’t going to be dominated by the sexy, hot-button issue-of-the-moment stuff that tends to dominate horse race politics and election headlines. Rather, it’s an attempt at a more substantive and interactive “where do we go from here” conversation that I think many of us are wanting to have these days. I’m really looking forward to tapping into the collective wisdom of our members for ideas, advice and feedback.
So if you’re a member, please send your suggestions and ideas to FDLmembers AT gmail DOT com by midnight on Monday May 8. We’ll be sending you an email with a registration link to next Wednesday’s webinar later this week.
If you’re not a member, and you’d like to take part in these discussions about shaping FDL’s activism and coverage in the future, you can join the FDL membership program here.

About Firedoglake
Thank you Jane for all that you do and have led FDL to become.
Gonna hafta buy a mic for my machine. Damn.
Wonderful! The first call was great. I enjoyed it and hearing David House, Marcy, and Col. Wright speak was incredibly informative.
It was also pretty darn cool to hear the firedogs asking their questions. Ya know, to be able to put a voice to the screen names.
Sounds like the first step in either organizing a viable progressive third party or setting up a MoveOn type org but one that is not in the Veal Pen. Either or both are great, and necessary goals. Be advised, however, that this will lead to much more clutching of pearls by those aghast at such outrageous, non-conformist, anti-PTB/MOTU behavior.
Good for you.
It was pretty cool. We were still learning how to use the technology (how to hand the mic over to people to ask questions, etc.) so we’re excited to be able to have more interactivity this time.
We have an incredible wealth of experience and wisdom in our members, and as we found when we were calling them to thank them for joining, some are regular FDL commenters but many aren’t. The webinars allow for a different type of interaction that gives people the opportunity to get to know each other as well as us. It’s been something we’ve wanted to facilitate for a long time, but it’s prohibitively expensive to do physical meet-ups on a regular basis. And up until we had the webinar software, difficult to do virtually.
We are really excited to see where this goes.
We got good mics for the mods to call members with. I’ll try to find the link. Maybe we should send it with the webinar invite.
Found ‘em on BestBuy. There’s one close to me so I’ll stop in this weekend.
Thought I was through with mics when I came back to the world. Guess not.
This move kind of takes FDL outside of the realm of ‘website’ and into the realm of ‘political organizers’, doesn’t it?
I like the action. It’s refreshing.
I got headphones w/ mic for around $20 at Target. Worked fine…it was my brain that failed on the call.
Plug and play, too.
Oops, re: my 10-never mind.
Did I join too late to get a welcome call? Rats. Oh well. Being a member is its own reward! (as was the Manning conf call)
dakine01 called me one Sat afternoon.
Thought it was Jane with a whiskey and cigarette voice. jk
Thanks. If BestBuy doesn’t have any in stock I’ll try that French store Target.
We can all be Joe Hill.
Whiskey River
I missed my member call. Figures, I don’t answer anything I don’t recognize.
I’ll think of suggestions. My kneejerk reaction was “come out against Obama” but after about 30 seconds of thought I’m not so sure. Any urging to vote for him will leave me nonplussed.
We should be organizing around principles, issues. I’ll put some more thought into it. Excited for the call.
Heh, I’m the one with the whiskey and cig voice. *g*
I’ll call ya.
Id like to offer my programming skills for the 2012 campaign and beyond. Maybe this site can be taken to a different level that will allow more participation. I believe its currently using wordpress which is very limited in its capabilities. I prefer Ruby on Rails myself. Let me know if youd like to talk about the possibilities.
Thanks.
I’m thinkin’ issues oriented stuff. We can really get bogged down with candidates. I’m also thinkin’ leavin’ Obama out of it altogether. There’ll be enough veal penners bloviating around him.
The Webinar medium is great idea. The blogging format tends to be a little isolated, alienated and always has a “preaching to the choir” problem.
Part of the goal here should be to develop a working consensus. In that regard I would like to lobby for integrating styles of “Participatory Democracy” and “Consensus Democracy” into the structure of the Webinar format. Please read Wikipedia for a great description.
In the case of the issue of “what should be done for the 2012 elections”, I hope that we could move through a brainstorming phase to a point where we had three or four directions – and then have a real consensus building process where everyone tries to develop the best case for each of the directions; in turn those could be boiled into a single narrative that almost everyone could approve.
Back to the idea of expanding the medium.
Of course in this case, the webinar format is used internal consensus building – no ambiguity about “preaching to the choir” here. However, I think that a serious leftist group should have a complementary outward focus to its intellectual activity. For instance, most of the webinar’s I see are canned webinar’s where a company is trying to explain/publicize/sell its technology. I would like to see FDL build outwardly focused canned webinars on keystone issues.
Finally, one other format that may be very useful for internal intellectual activity is a Skype based book club or discussion group. Using Skype would overcome the challenge of physical presence. I haven’t tried this yet, but I would love to experiment.
Ohmigawd.
I missed my call! Thought this thread was dead…I was over at Watertiger’s place laughing at twolf’s version of the Situation Room photo…
Called back, and forgot to leave a msg. (I freeze in the face of awesomeness).
Well, thanks anyway. So thoughtful of you to call me in the midst of everything (I didn’t mean to whine, really)
hey – we’d love to have any help you could provide. drop me a line at michael@firedoglake.com
“Finally, one other format that may be very useful for internal intellectual activity is a Skype based book club or discussion group.”
Oh, so now I have to learn Skype, too?
You just won’t let a person relax in their rocker and get old, will ya?
(Not if i want to survive old age)
I assume yer temp gig is over?
I’m having similar thoughts. In a way I think I would take more pleasure in just pretending he doesn’t exist, except to make fun of him, than take an official position.
Jane,
How long isthis webinar scheduled for?
Last one was great.
Thanks for all you do
Our political system is hopelessly corrupted by a war economy and an increasingly repressive Police State. What to do?
In 1968, the Yippies and Hippies, in similarly hopeless situation, came up with a solution. Nominate a Pig for President, Pigasus.
I suggest we nominate Veal For President. Call the poor critter “VealPen”.
I believe they want to schedule it for 1 1/2-2 hours, but that’s the decision of the board. We should know more tomorrow.
Oh I like making the calls. It’s just a matter of having the time to do it. I’ll call you again when I get a minute.
Yep. just vegging at the computer today, I’m afraid. Tomorrow for the vigorous back to the job-of-finding-a-job. Needed a rest (ok, not intentional, just happened.)
For anyone who missed the initial webinar, I posted a brief summary.

It really was fun, and so cool to hear Marcy ask her intelligent questions and manage the discussion.
We’re still working to familiarize ourselves with the technology, so I hope everyone will be understanding about our learning curve.
Please, join & c’mon down!
