I’m spending too much time on sports message boards. I’m a huge football fan and I love a good cenversation but most sports fans are racist, right-wing d-bags. I’m tired of explaining the definition of the word socialism and why Obama clearly isn’t one.
Can anyone here advise me on mowing a lawn that is holding so much water that walking on it is like walking on a sponge. Is it better to await a spell of dry weather or just have at it wet as it all is now?
The Sweety holds up to me that our neighbor mowed his lawn in spite of all the rain. I am being pressured to do the same to avoid shame…
I know nothing about mowing, btw. But I’ve never ever seen anyone mowing during rain, or while grass is really wet. Seems dumb, somehow.
I was cruising by on my way to bed, but your question really caught me.
I’ve always thought lawn obsession was weird; but 3 foot tall weeds might be too relaxed.
I would wait. I used to be a landscaper for a college and we weren’t allowed to mow in the rain. I live next to a lawn-nazi who has to mow it every week and mine always looks like crap by comparison.
hey Suze – as you might have noticed from my earlier silliness, I was home vegging most of the day. Temp gig over, no new ones materialized yet.
Made it to yoga in the evening..late…I completely lost track of time. But glad I made it…feel so goood since.
Got to go to sleep soon, then hope to accomplish something tomorrow.
Oh, and it’s cold here, too – well, warming up today, but yesterday? Whew…never got above 55! But the wind was a good 30 mph or more…gusty and chill. We were all wrapped up at work and I eschewed one of my breaktime walks outdoors….brrrrr!
Day before it was 90!
Yeah, I know; this is what passes for cold in Texas. But it’s weird – usually stays in the 90′s from mid-April on.
its been a cold and wet march and april here — several records were broken. i’m way overdue for this warmup but know that i’m likely to have another freeze warning or two before the month is up. last year, june was like march all month long :(
The longer the grass grows, the stronger and deeper the root structure will become. If the sun comes out so the grass blades can convert the light. If you mow when it’s wet, the cutters will probably get thick with stubble and hardly work right.
If you mow when it’s wet, the mower will probably leave tracks and the cutting will clump up inside and clog up the outlet chute.
OTOH 6-8 inches is getting into the real bitch to mow territory. I think that mowing effort is a function of the square of the grass height.
What is a two-beer lawn at 3-4 inches could be a 12 -packs-worth at 8-10 inches.
Just back from Napa Valley St. Helena for my birthday dinner.
It was swell. I also watched the movie, Conspirator. It was very interesting and a good movie. I learned a lot.
It’s been maybe two months since we had more than a trace of rain here in Houston. The ground is pulling away from the slab so bad I’m afraid of losing small pets.
Down in Galveston, they’re having to hose off the power line insulators because of the salt buildup creating a path to ground.
Of course. I think of it as my missionary duty. It’s funny how people react. When I comment on something that someone knows a lot about, they agree with my take. An oilfield guy admits that I know what I’m talking about as far as the oilpatch goes, an Air force guy agrees with my military takes.
But they can’t get past the tribalism to agree that my economic comments are right, or my political opinions are well-reasoned.
I steer clear of religion as a topic, although I’m waiting for the next “We are a Christian nation”. I think I’ll ask if we then should be doing “Christian” things like feeding the hungry or healing the sick. The whole “as you do for the least of you, so you have done for me” thing.
I can’t help noticing that the threads I contribute to are probably twice as long as the ones that are nothing but “well said” and Amen’
There is no “just a missing V”.
V is for victory
You obviously harbor secret defeatist sentiments regarding your lawn. Face it, you’re not tough enough to cut it here in Suburbia.Gonna just quit and move back to the city and watch our beloved country overrun with Mexican Heather?
Those back-to-back, 5-1/2 hour flights from DC to Hawaii = lots of zombies!!!
And no, don’t mow the lawn when it’s that wet. Grass and sod will be compressed by wheels of mower; blade isn’t good against wet grass. Wait, even if you have to mow “twice” –> once at a high level, and then again lower/shorter.
I am supposed to be writing up an inspection report, but Alas. You overcame my will with your wiles, you …wiley person. I’m doing to call it a day and wake up early and be productive in the pre-dawn hours.
Ensnared again.
Is there nothing that you can’t find a related song for?
I sent a link to “Mow the Lawn” to a friend who is like the next generation down from me. Prefaced it with this
“Socrates had to drink hemlock for corrupting the youth of Athens. I’ll take mine with a splash”
Did you hear about the new Bin Laden cocktail? Two shots and a splash!
Thank you. I’ve been working with Jane & some of the others on membership.
I only learned AFTER the webinar that I needed to write it up — had not taken any notes while it was going on.
The one next Wed. looks like it will be really interesting, and the ideas for possible follow-ups are exciting too. I urge everyone who can to join & participate.
Sorry to be so late to the party; don’t know if you’ll be coming back in here. My computer was acting up and wouldn’t let me in. Insert sad face here.
good to hear you will be taking notes again mauimom — i always come back to my lnn threads after i get up the next day and look for new comments…. hope your computer stops acting up
evening, Suzzzz
I just noticed the glaring gaffe that proves the photo of the White House crew gathered around the table intently watching bin Laden be killed must be a fake:
Biden’s awake.

hey robert — i’ve always held that too wet to walk on is too wet to mow… hope that helps with sweety. how ya doing tonight?
Good grief – how high is the grass?

No weeds, but the grass is up to about 6-8 inches….

that’s 2 no’s robert – mine and jwill
make that 3
Ooooh, swooon! Get a load of that hair!
Takes me back…I was, of course, a mere babe at the time..
The Sweety will be informed of all yours and the other peeps advise. If she wants the lawn mauled, she can maul it herself….
too wet to plow equals too wet to mow
Pffft! That’s nothing. Sweetie needs to relax!
I think we’re unanimous. Wait till it dries out.
Mah Boys…
hey that guy — how ya doing tonight?
Thanks, everybody.

hey kelly — how’s denver tonight?
Suzanne, can’t help wondering what search terms could you possibly entertain to come up with Zombies on the lawn?
hey aitch — how was your day?
hey strat — i make some dayam strange mental connections with music :) how ya doing tonight?
So strange – but oddly fascinating. Just got back from that one, and a live one, that was on the right-hand sidebar. That was cute.
You find the oddest things, Suzanne. What I learn from LLN.
and now, to sleep, hopefully not to dream of zombies on my lawn.
g’nite tejan
Hi Chris, Suz, everyone.
I got soaked just going to one store. I had to come home and change clothes and turn on the furnace!
