Watching the right’s rhetorical acrobatics over the past few days has been really quite amusing. Check out this strained exchange between Hugh Hewitt and Jim DeMint (T-SC).
HH: Senator, there’s an insipient sort of politicization of this, with people speculating on its impact on President Obama’s 2012 reelection. I think it’s untoward, but it’s also everywhere. What do you think about this?
JD: Well, I appreciate the fact that he has pursued this. Obviously, we’ve got to give some credit to George Bush for making this a decade-long commitment. But we’ve got to give President Obama his due. He continued to pursue it, despite pressure from the left. And he did what even some Republicans said he shouldn’t do, and that’s stage an attack in Pakistan. So I’m here to give him credit for what happened, but I do think we need to realize that the Navy SEALs, the expertise that we had, has been developed over a long period of time, with our commitment to our defense and our military. That’s not something we’re seeing from this administration. So that is a missing link, but we need to remember the intelligence gathered to make this happen came from some of the interrogation centers that have now been dissolved.
DeMint doesn’t say specifically what Obama’s done to undermine the military, but maybe he’s referring to the fact that Obama retained George W. Bush’s Secretary of Defense and all his top generals while increasing defense spending.
Anyway, criticizing Democrats for “politicizing” Osama’s death? Check.
Crediting George W. Bush? Check.
Rationalizing torture? Check.
The talking points are solidifying.

Republicans are loathsome.
Any port in a storm. I don’t think these points are going to get much traction in the MSM, howqever. Hard to see the echo-chamber working these points to death (apart from Fox). De Mint is pissing into a headwind.
If these Senators, Ds and Rs, would spend as much time on problem solving real problems as they do on talking points we might not be in the financial and social mess we find ourselves in.
*sigh*
The meme that will survive — because it will be supported by both sides –is that he did it against the express wishes of the professional left.
Fuckin’ A
So I guess DeMint didn’t get no ‘rithmetic learnin’ during his home-schoolin’ days…
Another talking point in the last 2 days is that “AQ has been franchised”.
Don’t you all realize that we’re in even more danger now? We’ve destabilized the Middle East! We need to redouble our efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan and keep a watchful eye on Pakistan. Oh, and expect to spend more at the pump.
/TalkingPointsGoingForward.
Sad to say.
Does anyone remember “the left” pressuring Obama not to pursue OBL? Did I miss something?
The left always wants to “cut and run” dontcha know…
You must be joking. Really?
I at least thought it would take longer for the right to start criticizing President Obama for forcing G.W. Gump and his team of secret texas rangers to take matters into their own hands and bring down that evil Bin Laden themselves.
How was there a “highly volatile fire fight” when OBL was unarmed, and only his “family” was present. (watching WH presser)
Remember all the folks yesterday who said he couldn’t have been taken alive?
He was unarmed. They double-tapped him anyway.
Yup. If indeed any of this actually went down..the story just keeps morphing..
Yeah, I seem to remember 2 Democratic candidates for president specifically running on getting bin Laden, since Chimpy failed to.
Which is why I don’t believe it happened at all.
Carney saying that BO etal. received realtime minute by minute accounting of what was ongoing…but that things are still being examined to determine what happened…
Say whaaa?
He’s having a lot of trouble pulling the foot in and out of his mouth…he’s really nervous. LOL
Maybe the wingnuts would shut up if only, when he made the announcement Sunday night, Obama had had a big banner draped behind him:
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
For folks like Jim DeMint you really need to simplify things. You’re right. A
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED h/t gwb
banner probably would’ve rallied the right behind the Preznit.
I suggested on Sunday night that Obama just reread the Mission Accomplished speech at the podium. I think that would’ve been perfect.
heh, indeedy!!1!1
The Patriot Act is up for renewal this month.
DemandProgress.Org: Bin Laden Is Dead: Let’s End The Spying
The rightwing talking point that this mission should be more “fairly” credited to the military/special ops/Navy Seals and/or W Bush was very very very quick off the mark. I started to see that meme almost as soon as Obama was done talking Sunday evening, and I definitely saw a number of rightwingers blogging it by Mon morning.
One thing I gotta say: the Kochs/Scaifes/Mellons/Roger Aisles don’t let the grass grow under pumping out scurrilous rightwing talking points that diss this AA POTUS…. but they’re not racists… or Anti-American… or unpatriotic… or something…
Disclaimer: not a fan of Obama; highly skeptical of this purported mission. Just saying….
Wowee. These people are far too immature to be anywhere near government.
The “Left” did not want to pursue Bin Laden according to this lying sack of crap. As I recall, Chimpie disbanded the “Bin Laden Unit”. It was not “Leftists” who were friendly with the Bin Laden Family, It was the Bushie Crime Family and the Carlyle group. Did the “Left” hire Bin Laden as the CIA did? Was Ali Mohamed, who was helping Bin Laden while serving in the Green Berets, a “Leftist”?
It was not “Leftists” who protected the Saudi financiers of Al Qaeda and Usama Bin Laden. It was the US Government.
Republicans live in a fantasy reality which is a common trait of all government officials and MSM.
Maybe all those tornados in the Carolinas are God’s will after all.
“God may be on our side. But he hates idiots.” – Clint Eastwood, TGTBTU.
Stop making sense! Facts don’t matter! Stay the course with Orwellian rightwing parseltongue-speak!
P.S. It wasn’t the sanctimonious purist f*cking r*tarded left who permitted ObL’s parents to fly out of the USA on 9/11/2001 when NO other airplanes were pemitted to fly in US airspace. I think that W and/or Poppy Booosh approved that.
…but that things are still being examined to determine what happened…

The answer is to start telling them what they are, instead of letting them tell us what we are. The right is the soft side, the irresponsible side, the incompetent side, the subversive side, the side that said “I really don’t care where Osama bin Laden is.” No one needs to ask them what they think or what they would do. Because the one and only appropriate answer to that is that they, in every way possible, are destroying America. Here’s a meme: Demint and his ilk are the ideological blood brothers and sisters of bin Laden, and the sooner we realize that the safer this country will be.
Ah, you beat me to it. That point, in particular, totally contradicts this:
It was 2002 when Bush declared that he didn’t think about bin Laden that much, 2006 when he disbanded the bin Laden unit.
From what I’m reading, it was Obama’s first week in office when he set the goal and a team in place to focus on pursuit of bin Laden (whatever you think about good/bad decision).
This administration hasn’t shown commitment to the military, or the Seals, in particular? I guess Obama must’ve cut off funding to the Seals and they just continued to train and recruit and practice worst-case scenarios on their own time and dimes, huh?
Immature and stupid are words too mild to apply to DeMint. Hewitt barely reaches the mental level of an ordinary human being.
That DeMint is a “Congressional leader” of any stripe is punishment for 240 years of American sins.
(no, not literally…but sometimes I do wonder)
DeMint started the recession, you know
The only picture of OBL to which I accord any validity at all is that provided by Robert Fisk in “The Great War for Civilization” because I think he is an honest journalist. Everything else I’ve seen I consider spectacle, at best.
Killing seems to be the only way were willing to solve anything anymore.
Whether or not the Patriot Act goes away now that OBL is dead will tell us about all we need to know about the relative threat posed by him and just how much of a “victory” is his death. Two immoveable objects: The need for perpetual war and domestic control versus the death of the principal enemy in that war. Solution: The world is now even more dangerous than before the great “victory” that was the death of the arch-nemesis. And now we’re back to another conundrum: Then what is the meaning of victory?
This is the algebra for war that never ends.
Is anybody surprised that Jim DeMint continues to be an unadulterated sack of shit?
The “commitment” he is looking for is to spread his particular religion and pro-corporate ideology worldwide at the point of a bayonet. And Obama is not 100% committed to that.
You see, you can’t get higher up on the pyramid without expanding the base, and growth is pretty much over, so to make an analogy to the business world, you buy market share through acquisitions. In the imperial case, you conquer countries and change them to be enough like yourself that they serve to expand the economic base, and you can get one level higher in the pyramid, with the swimming pool and private plane that goes along with it.
I distinctly remember the uber-lefty talking point: “Leave Osama Alone!”
Or, you know, NOT.
What the fuck is DeMented smoking? I want some.
What ever happened to responsible republicans?..
I think what DeMint was trying to say was that the ‘defense’ had done well over the last decade and the Left had better not cut spending no it now. But, also that since we’re so far in debt we’d better cut spending on everything else. The Republicans think the Constitution declared the only purpose of gov’t is to defend the lives and property of the rich and to maintain an appropriate business climate of low taxes.
DeMint and those who would keep spending so much on ‘defense’ are a real threat to our sustainability and national survival.
We must move to sanity on both spending and taxation and that means cutting ‘defense’ and increasing taxes to appropriate levels. We have to end the deficits and begin to pay down the debt. DeMint and Republicans don’t want either of those to hurt their pet projects.
