Watching Al Jazeera — They’ve just finished talking w/Pakistani correspondent in Islamabad, who says that so far there’s no reaction aside from sighs of relief, though it’s early yet.
Another analyst says that while the next few weeks will require vigilance as what’s left of AQ will want to lash out (to show they’re still relevant if nothing else), AQ has lost lots of support with the US pulling out of Iraq and with the far less violent revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt showing that change doesn’t need terrorism to happen.
I am. Screw it. I am indulging in an entire evening of schadenfreude. I’m not sorry. I haven’t had this much schadenfreude since Falwell died. Time for some cognac.
So far, per AJE, the Arab world in general is relieved. They were glad to see the US start leaving Iraq, and glad to see the revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt show that terrorism isn’t necessary for change, and now they’re glad to see that the guy who ticked off the Westerners is dead and so now maybe the Westerners will leave.
Only U.S. personnel were involved in the raid and Obama’s decision to launch it was not shared with any other country, including Pakistan, whose most powerful intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate, has long been suspected by U.S. officials of maintaining links to extremist groups close to al Qaida.
After all these years i got notice Saturday that i had paid the IRS all i had owed from before the 89 PWS oil spill. Which ended my lively hood,at that time. Doubt i will run out and open a bank account though.
Maybe interesting, maybe flotsam. Brian Williams and Pete Williams were just yammering away, and one of them mentioned that (DC’s self-fellatrism party of the year) the Correspondents dinner was last night – – and no one leaked the ongoing operation.
So not leaking is the new standard of excellence in governance.
Big time and since I don’t have any kind of coverage, it’s going to have to rot out of my head before it stops hurting. The best I can do is try to control the infection.
Have not been around much lately .. great to see you out and about, Margaret .. evening Ctut, and all the folks, as Dr. John would say .. Hmm, I remember reading about some “National Detainee Handbooks” needed stat by April 29, 2011. Saw it on a number of progressive sites, but, at this time, googled this:
The U.S. Government needs 350,934 National Detainee Handbooks printed by 29 April 2011. Here’s a 2007 English version of the National Detainee Handbook. I don’t know if that’s the same document as what has been ordered below.
The GPO solicitation went out on 18 April and the handbooks must be delivered by 29 April. Is eleven days a short time for something like this? I have no idea, but clicking on “Jacket Number: 735-412/413” brings up a specification document, which states the following:
TIME CRITICAL:
Notify Ron Boyum at 312-353-3916 x 17 or at rboyum at gpo dot gov of the delivery status in the morning 2 days prior to the first shipment to meet the at destination delivery date. [sic]
This is a time-critical order. For the purpose of this contract, the provision in GPO Contract Terms Pub. 310.2 (Rev. 6-01) for schedule extensions does not apply. No automatic extensions of schedules will be made. All interested contractors must commit to the original schedule. Shipments must be made by a carrier that will guarantee delivery at destination within the specified schedule. Carrier’s “targets” in lieu of “guaranteed” deliveries will not be acceptable.
They seem pretty serious about needing the handbooks by 29 April.
Beatiful touch Tut .. I have loved that lady since I was a kid .. Both Sides Now .. she sang a Joanie song and helped get Miz Mitchell started .. and always found her pure and sweet ..
After 10 years of war and the death of Osama bin Laden, it’s time to bring the troops home from Afghanistan. With al-Qaeda driven from the country and Bin Laden now dead, the rationale for war has evaporated. It’s time to stop now.
The swift withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan must begin immediately.
Bring them home.
Sign our petition and we’ll deliver it to the White House this week.
What is so critical that these thousands of detention procedure manuals had to be delivered by April 29th, 3 days before the announcement of the killing of OBL?
Somebody must be expecting something that would provoke mass detentions, methinks….
A Pakistani blogger tweeted from a hilltop during the entire raid. He claimed to have seen or have gotten reports of a helicopter crash with 1 dead, 1 wounded. Here’s his twitter page.
I understand. Like Larue, I suspected OBL was long dead one way or another. It’s really very convenient he wasn’t captured to stand trial, isn’t it? I think the celebrations of OBL’s death noted in Jane’s thread are macabre. Obama’s “jokes” about drones at the correspondent’s dinner then a Sunday night news dump– why?
It cost the US trillions to get OBL. The CEO’s of the institutions what brought on this financial miss management. Of our world order, will not come down till we spend hundreds of trillions. And they will still make money off of that.
I have a stack of wood i will trade you for your bag of mangos.
I hear what you’re saying, and you are apparently not alone.
But while I sincerely hope there are none of the Uday & Qusay-type pictures distributed as so-called ‘certainty of death’, there will be an international standard of proof that the ‘findings’ will need to meet. Other nations will (and should) demand rigorous examination for satisfaction that this isn’t a scam.
That would be a difficult standard to meet indeed, if OBL has been in a freezer somewhere for several years.
Part of me had always wished we had caught him, but felt that keeping him locked away from family any any recognition from the world, might have been a betting punishment for him. Being forced to live out his days with no access to the world. Dragging him in front of the Hague would have been worth it too. When you send 10 full SEAL fireteams, you mean one to do one thing…
Update: It is now confirmed that Osama Bin Laden was killed in an air strike last week, and the US has the body. Expect the media to be drowned with stories of imminent terrorist “retaliation” which will push a flight to USD “safety” and purportedly drop commodities.
I never thought I’d see the day a sitting U.S. president tries to manipulate the market in such an obvious manner using nonsense and bullshit on TV, but wonders never cease. Obama has become a penny stock scam artist. Is the US dollar rally over? Did Obama just blow his wad for a few upticks in a measly US dollar ‘pump and dump’ scheme? Man oh man, BTFD.
Hmmm … I really don’t think the USD sell-off is going to stop on Obama’s announcement.
And we know in our hearts that it will never be what we all want to see. Those files do not exist in file or any other form. One must remember these people don’t keep files and they don’t make noise. Some of them do believe the dirty hippies. But don’t hold your breath.
Fuck punctuation and fuck spelling i am tired of being the last asshole on the threads. I have tried to be clear but the time is not fast enough. from now on it will be from head to keyboard an ya all kin sort it out.
There are a few things to consider about this I’ve yet to see mentioned.
1. This announcement very, very effectively keeps people away from Obama’s past.
Trump, distasteful as he is, by bringing up not only the birth certificate (where the real story isn’t the document but what’s *on* the document – his biological father is not the Kenyan Barack Obama Sr. but in reality the American Frank Marshall Davis) but Obama’s shadowy past as a whole, was getting people to think about whether the mythic tale of “Barack Obama” is anything more than a fabrication.
This fiction wouldn’t be any different than the marketing image of Dubya (as successful businessman and military pilot, instead of failure and boozing deserter), or Reagan (as staunch cowboy American, instead of schemer who collaborated with the Ayatollah to hold Americans hostage so he could win the election), or JFK (as princely young statesman and not wealthy playboy with severe health problems) or FDR (who was never shown in his wheelchair). But were it ever to become known that the story of “Barack Obama” as that character was marketed to the public was an embellishment if not outright fabrication, it would bring down the entire government.
2. Some very, very bad new sh*t is coming down.
bin Laden has most likely been dead since late 2001, and wasn’t involved in the false flag attacks of 9/11 anyway. But he still had huge PR value because his spectre could be trotted out whenever the powerful needed something scary with which to stampede and direct the herd.
That this character is being retired means either the need for such indirection is over, or there’s a new character going to be created to take his place. Just like with any other fiction, when a new character is brought in to replace one that’s being retired, the new character needs to have some kind of convincing introduction. That suggests a new false flag, or perhaps many.
It’s likely these new replacements will be anonymous, because one of the downsides of having created “bin Laden” is there was then a name and face that, when not delivered (because he was in fact already dead), acted as a reminder of the overall failure to achieve the claimed objective. With the new replacement bin Ladens, by making them faceless and anonymous there will never be any way to suggest the continued prosecution and escalation of war isn’t valuable, and isn’t successful. Every death will be of an al Kaydee leader, every Arab and enemy of the state will be a bin Laden follower.
3. The economy is going to get a lot worse, and soon.
Wars are expensive, and even though the U.S. government is willing to borrow money forever (signing the public’s name on the iou’s, of course), the rest of the world isn’t willing to keep lending it to them. If the U.S. is going to stop fighting the wars at the current level and pull back, it can’t just tell the public the truth – “we have to stop fighting because we’ve spent all your money and we haven’t done any of the things we claimed we’d do by fighting them in the first place, we’ve simply taken all your money and your rights.” If the U.S. needs to stop fighting because it’s broke and wants to “declare victory and go home,” it first needs to declare victory.
And the U.S. can’t declare any kind of victory without claiming it killed bin Laden.
What this also does is provide an almost unassailable position from which to argue the destruction of the Republic was “worth it.” The collapse of the economy will now not simply be the result of the failures (or perhaps the successes) of the powerful and the greedy, it will be the heroic price we’re all willing to pay in order to have protected America. We’ll pay any price to protect the world’s freedom! Yes, your children have starved to death, but you wouldn’t want bin Laden to still be alive, would you?
So we’ll have a false equivalence between the collapse of the country and the “success” of the last decade of war.
This wouldn’t be necessary unless one were fairly sure the economy was going to collapse.
4. It seals the entire story of 9/11, never to be examined again. 9/11 and all it was used to justify becomes the new status quo, and the guilty go free.
Hard as it has been to examine anything about 9/11 or the damage to the public done in its name, it will be even harder now. Because this small “success” is recent and the rest is a decade of tragedy we’re desperate to deny and forget, this announcement will act as a tombstone sealing it all from ever being disturbed again.
And since “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” get ready for a future of more of the same.
Sorry, just posting what they were putting on two channels last night, they had the raid numbered @ 40 personnel. So just ten 4-man fireteams, most likely. And yeah, that’s a heck of a lot.

Step back, friend – that’s legitimate news and interest since it was just revealed.

Do you have a linky to the 10 Seal teams…? That’s basically 2 Navy Fleet’s worth of Seals…! 8-(
This site is a bit out of kilter. Things will not load.
i have never confused Obama’s name with Osama Bin Laden’s. How come these stupid news anchors have such a problem keeping it straight?
We recommend that you clear your caches and history, and relaunch your browser.

Now MSNBC is reporting Bin Laden has been buried at sea. Well, I guess that settles that….
Thanks Mod. That worked. First time i have had that happen.
Congratulations!
For the heck of it, I was wondering how the announcement on a Sunday night could affect financial markets. Durden at ZeroHedge.Com says:
M. Keiser says:
Hmmm … I really don’t think the USD sell-off is going to stop on Obama’s announcement.
Meanwhile, “2011-05-01: IrishLeaks Launches Submission Platform” which may mean more whistle-blowing on crooked financial institutions.
89,347 international signatures so far toward the target of 300,000 to free Ai Weiwei. 538,210 international signatures to stop the torture of Bradley Manning. What is the status on the move to dismiss his trial since “President Obama Makes a Fair Trial of Bradley Manning Impossible By Declaring Him Guilty” (by Kevin Zeese, Apr. 25, 2011)? Wouldn’t it have kewl of an Administration announcement of the trial dismissal?
I still await the ‘key’ to the BoA files…! 8-(
Well, I shall bid ya’ll another fond adieu for the nite…! Mahalo for the great conversations…! Aloha Oe…! *g*
