Republican Debt Ceiling Power Play Would Stand Constitution on its Head

By: Jon Walker Thursday April 21, 2011 7:23 pm

House and Senate Republicans apparently now hate the Constitution. The GOP feels despite winning control of only the House, but not the Senate or the White House, they should actually be given the power to unilaterally impose massive change. Since they failed to win enough elections to rightfully get this power under the Constitution, they are now claiming they will use a quirk in the system for financing our debt to destroy our entire economy, unless power is seceded to them.

Unemployment: Giving Away the Future

By: dakine01 Thursday April 21, 2011 6:46 pm

Today’s Initial Unemployment Claims report for last week is out and once again, the economists have their rose colored glasses on.

But hey! McDonald’s is hiring, right?

Gang of Six Won’t Include “Significant” Tax Hikes

By: David Dayen Thursday April 21, 2011 6:09 pm

I’m not sure there’s anyone who believes that the Obama Administration will suddenly reject a budget bill that came out of a bipartisan process. The Administration has encouraged the Gang of Six. They’ve sat in on negotiations. They’ve put their credibility on the line, by saying that Democrats and Republicans have to come together on a balanced approach. Now, if the bipartisan negotiations produce an unbalanced result, will they simply dismissed it? I don’t see that happening at all.

Obama to Pre-Schoolers: Sorry I Had to Fire Your Teacher, But Now I Can Buy Almost 1/50th of a Tomahawk Missile

By: Jon Walker Thursday April 21, 2011 5:32 pm

We found out yesterday that Obama plans on sending $25 million in aid to the Libyan rebels, and we find out today the President has approved the use of American military drones in the conflict. A few million here, a few million there, and pretty soon this mission creeps into us spending some real money.

US Debt Ratio Similar to Private Companies Like GE

By: David Dayen Thursday April 21, 2011 4:54 pm

What Mason doesn’t realize is that Galtian producer class colossi work in those corporate boardrooms, and they can shrug off debt ratios like so many gnats. Only the sniveling government – which by the way sucks at the government teat, has anybody noticed that? – has a problem with debt.

PolitiFact “As We Know It”: Medicare Means Whatever GOP Says It Means

By: Jon Walker Thursday April 21, 2011 4:18 pm

Apparently, if I blow up your Ferrari but I replace it with an old Honda Civic, I haven’t actually destroyed your car; at least according to the bizarre logic used by PolitiFact.

John Ensign Will Resign May 3; Rep. Dean Heller to Replace Him [Updated]

By: David Dayen Thursday April 21, 2011 3:42 pm

John Ensign, the Nevada Senator still reeling from an adultery and corruption scandal, will resign tomorrow, according to several published reports. Rep. Dean Heller, who has already announced a run for Ensign’s seat in the Senate, will be appointed as an interim replacement for Ensign by Governor Brian Sandoval, giving him the power of incumbency and a leg up in what should be a competitive Senate election in 2012. This leaves Heller’s seat open, and a special election will ensue.

Gabrielle Giffords Champions Treatment for Traumatic Brain Injury for Service Members

By: David Dayen Thursday April 21, 2011 3:25 pm

Giffords is living proof of the potential for cognitive rehabilitation therapy. It’s an expensive procedure. But the Pentagon budget, let’s say, has a few bucks to spare in reserve. Rather than putting that money into buying the 1,592nd armored carrier or 15th prototype stealth fighter that will simply be mothballed, that money ought to go to fix the soldiers who are wounded in battle. And there’s nobody better to take up that fight than Gabrielle Giffords.
