After Haiti was hit with by a devastating earthquake in 2010, killing over 200,000 innocent people, Pat Robertson claimed it was God punishing that country for its “pact with the devil.” The Texas-based Republican activist Pastor John Hagee famously blamed New Orleans’ devastation by Katrina on “homosexuals.” Jerry Falwell, in the wake of 9/11, said the attack that killed over 3,000 Americans was God’s way of punishing us for harboring abortionists, feminists, and the ACLU.
And just recently, Glenn Beck said that the earthquakes and tsunami in Japan was God’s rebuke of that country’s behavior.
I’ll tell you this — whether you call it Gaia or whether you call it Jesus, there’s a message being sent. And that is, ‘Hey you know that stuff we’re doing? Not really working out real well. Maybe we should stop doing some of it.’
Elizabeth Hasselbeck helpfully served as an Amen Chorus to Beck, adding,
I believe God speaks to all of us in ways.
OK.
Well, the states hit the hardest by the tornadoes are all Republican strongholds: Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Georgia. Surely, that can’t be a coincidence.
So is God punishing these conservative states because they’re not taking care of the poor, the elderly and the sick, as Jesus commanded?
Somehow, I doubt we’re going to hear Glenn Beck or John Hagee speculate about this today.

Either that or the affects of Global Warming.
They will reach the conclusion that they haven punished sl*ts, f**gots, ni**ers, etx enough, and must ban sharia law again.
Probably a liberal plot.
Oh and Al Gore is still fat.
NICELY done blue, I believe the only way to stop them from calling every travesty “god’s message” is to send that same message back to them
It’s like these idiots that score a great touchdown and then give the credit to God when it was their talent and skill and luck. Like they are rewarded for being so righteous, but the other team is punished…for something…
Stupid magical thinking.
When I first glanced at your headline, BT, I thought it said Are the Tomatoes God’s Judgment….
Like the race car driver who wins because the leader suffered a horrible or even fatal crash in the last lap. “I’d like to thank God for
letting me wintaking my competitor out….”Well tomatoes are red. Let’s see…..who else likes to wear red….?
But I love tomatoes. Cast no aspersions.
Why yes they are. The Bible quite clearly states that those who pursue Republican policies (Matthew 25) are going to hell. this is clearly devine retribution for their voting Republican.
God’s punishing his people in the bible belt for not doing a good enough job of getting his word out. He’s a loving god but he’ll kick your ass 6 ways to sunday if you don’t do his bidding!
Thanks for highlighting the nastiness, the sheer barking insanity, the blatantly bigoted racism, along with cravenly scum-sucking depravity of the Tent-Show Revivalist flim-flam carnival whore barkers on the right, paricularly of some rabidly rightwing swathes of so-called American “Christianity” (disclaimer: not all Christians think or behave this way, nor should they be lumped in with these charlatans).
But I duly note that these Media Whores never ever vent their nasty homophobic, racist, sexist diatribes when such disasters happen in the Red states. Note the floods in Iowa a couple of years ago. Sorry to the Iowa citizens who endured the floods, but incidents like that were then twisted to yet again point fingers of blame at places like NOLA (by saying that the good WHITE – probably mostly hetero – citizens of Iowa “took care of themselves” and didn’t “need help” like the worthless in NOLA did, yadda yadda).
It’s all bad all the time with such low-lifers as described in this post. My bitterness and loathing knows no bounds. They’ll find some way to twist the devastation from these tornados (my heart goes out to those affected) in some way to point fingers of blame at those deemed “Godless” or whatever. ptoui!!!!!
God in any sport is somehow even more ludicrous than God in politics.
Although I think the Oscar goes to… The Oscar winners. You know, the ones who “first and foremost, I have to thank God” when they get up there?
Yeah, those tools.
Ah, well. To each her own. I can’t stand ‘em.
Now that all those Repub govs are trying to reject federal $$$ for stuff like FEMA…..Hey conservatives…how’s that workin’ for ya! You betcha!
I’d like to see Adam Savage get an Oscar. They probably wouldn’t let him collect it personally though. He’s as atheist as I am.
Blue Texan: You don’t understand the mind of the religious conservative. You see, the reason God is punshing the bible belt states with tornados is because they haven’t fought hard enough against the evil infiltration of progressives. They haven’t fought against the evil Obama. So, you see how that works? God is punishing his believer because they aren’t fighting the progressive surge.
Just ask any religious nut: When an earthquake happens in San Francisco, God is punishing evil liberals. When a tornado hits the bible belt, God is punshing his followers for not crushing the evil liberals. That’s the indestructible logic of the conservative religious loony.
I read cast no asparagus.
I might say ‘Food is my favorite thing to eat.’ There’s little I don’t like.
WWFGS?
Now you shouldn’t cast that at least. I love asparagus.
This is a valuable site to monitor what’s going on with these types of storm systems:
http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/storm-chasers/live-tracker/live-tracker.html
After typing that, I thought there should be some sort of spice or herb named aspersion. They we could cast tomatoes & aspersion together & see how it tastes.
Par-cooked asparagus, cut on the slant, penne pasta, S&P, makes a great stir fry with tomatoes & herbs added at end. And beautiful colors too.
Me too!
Thanks…now I’m really hungry! I’m also getting new glasses…:)
Wait! Wait!
I’m still trying to catch up, eCAHN.
God’s will?
I thought the personal “excuse” when spending more time with one’s family was always a tearful, “The Devil made me do it.
The political class gets more mileage out of God and the Devil than my daughter’s Yorkie-Poo gets out of “cute”.
(BTW, you certainly stuck a bee in daughter’s bonnet … science project, for certain, next year … thank you, from both of us.)
;~DW
Well, well. Looky here! And they didn’t even need Sharia law to do it!
Kewl site. You can see that we’re having thunderstorms in the east, and lots of rain. Had only 2 nice weather days so far this year. But of course the east coast is no longer “blue” politically.
BT, God would never punish Conservative states in this way.
On a serious note, please remember to direct metta toward those who have been harmed by this odd weather these last few days.
You are very correct, enemies of god get smited while true believers are punished for not doing enough. This god fellow sure is fickle.
In a word, “yes“.
AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Blue Texan:
You don’t seriously believe that any of these fascist lunatics will even make a connection with their previous articulations of theology or even care about the devestation brought down on those poor, miserable folks who live in those states do ya? The irony is, of course, that many of the people who have been hit by this devestation believe that God is punishin’ ‘em for SOMEthin’ just not what He actually would be punishin’ ‘em for if He even existed.
I think that there will always be a political base for fascism because there are so many states in which folks are so ignorant and have never had even a taste of prosperity that they figure everyione deserves to be brought down to their level. We ‘mericans are somethin’ all right!!
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, WE’RE ALL IN NOW!!
Interesting to find out he he’ll pay the $250,000 fine…his mugshot looks like he’s good for the money…cough
Good. Write up a diary when she’s finished it.
I learned a lot too.
One of the most interesting was that someone mention, besides Russians & Italians, there are also Carniolan bees, which I had never heard of before. I emailed Chris to ask him about them, and he emails back that mine are actually a cross between Russian & Carniolan. Why he never told me that before, I’ll find out when he comes to inspect the hive and another couple of weeks.
Yes.
Thanks for the reminder. Every time I see a picture, I can’t imagine what it feels like to have one’s home & possessions in shreds around one. Not to mention the loss of life and injuries.
Well, look at it this way. Beck is on his way out and he’s basically a giant fucktard. Hell, most of the right wing media darlings are nothing more than bags of hot air and a motley collection of venereal diseases.
Either way, it’s kind of sad that 200+ people died and we shouldn’t poke fun at that even if those right wing retards derided the unfortunate souls who endured previous natural disasters. I pay them no mind — karma gets them eventually.
I found out the other day how much more accurate the stormchasers were than the weather reports were.
Cooooompletely OT, but awesome and funny.
I just got a fax here at work that reads as follows.
Awesome. I wonder if he’ll gain any traction?
That is exactly what I was going to say.
Dick. /s
I live in one of those states.
On Monday, I saw large trees knocked over onto roads, one of which hit a moving car. As only one person in this state died as a result of the weather and that person does not live here, I can only hope that the person who was driving the car is ok.
Then, late yesterday, there was hail almost the size of golf balls coming down for about 10-15 minutes. Anyone who was outside during it could have been easily hurt.
Metta.
I was going to write the same diary today but thought it might be considered in bad taste. I was wrong, about it being in bad taste. Thanks BT.
One ton tomato!
We had possible hail in the forecast for today, but I haven’t seen any yet and can live without it.
Nice!
Ah, the “logic” of loons. You gotta love it.
LOL.
Could also be wonton with mayo.
Climate change is only a theory! Unlike religion *snort*.
Actually, since God is a myth, nothing to worry about one way or the other on this topic. The beauty of completely replacing thought with faith is that regardless of the outcome, the answer to why and how is always “God’s will”.
I do think it is important that the Republican victims of these tornadoes bootstrap their way out of this without any help from the federal government.
/Tithes via paypal, thanks.
I was watching live when the tornadoes hit, and it was terrifying and heartbreaking to realize the magnitude of what was happening at that very moment….It is a catastrophic situation.
I’ve never seen hail like that before. It was a little scary, actually. It seemed to come out of nowhere, lasted for about 10-15 minutes, and then turned to rain. I hope there’ll be no hail by you.
Hail often signifies tornado possibility.
I’ll be able to check it out tomorrow. Storm chasers sez light rain, weather sez mostly sunny.
Gov. Perry prayed for rain and the storms are wiping out the rest of the South. They should ask Texas for compensation.
The only time I’ve seen hail was last spring. It was small (maybe 1/4 size peas), which was plenty big enough for me. It lasted about 10-15 min but then hung around for an hour or so bc it had piled up. Took a lttle paint off my garage too.
Don’t forget the pets who are killed, injured, lost, displaced, etc., including those whose owners perish.
Nice post.
You fail to understand the fundie mind, such as it is.
If bad things happen to you, it is punishment by the Big Invisible Authority Figure because of all the ways you are different from me. It’s all your own fault, and empathy (of which I am incapable, anyway) by me would be an affront to the BIAF. Thus the victim is to blame, and any aid rendered by me or society in general is also an affront to the BIAF, as well as raising my taxes.
If bad things happen to me, paragon of all righteousness, it is the work of that noted anarchist SATAN, and not my fault in any way. Thus I am deserving of your
magical incantationsprayers, relief efforts, and of course money. I owe nothing, to you or society in general, in return because it is your duty to oppose the works of SATAN.There are awful ongoing floods right now too.
Right. A neighbor took in some rescue dogs from NoLa for awhile until they found other homes. She (my neighbor) has 2 big dogs of her own.
Re weather extremes, when McKibbon was here hosting a book salon a month or two ago, bemoaning how difficult it was to convince people of climate change against the “flood” of corp BS, I advised him to tie high food prices too climate change, which is something everyone can understand.
We have a survivor (dog) of Hurricane Rita.
All I lost was the back cover to my car’s passenger-side mirror. My family was all sitting with me in safety when it happened, so I could care less about the cover!
I didn’t see tornadoes live on tv in part because I stopped watching tv around the time MSNBC took Olbermann off the air and gave us LO’DoH instead. I didn’t realize just how catastrophic the damage could be.
Lucky.
I stayed on my back porch for part of it, as there’s a wide overhanging roof, but then it started blowing in my direction, I went inside.
Mark Morford has an alternative view on god and weather: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2011/04/27/notes042711.DTL
The Onion tweets:
The Onion
NEWSWIRE: Local Farmer Explains It Was Tornado That Left Him Wearing Ladies Clothes
*snicker*
NOAA says today East Coast will have severe thunderstorms, hail, high wind and rain. Plus tornadoes. Stay inside and safe.
Thanks, BT! This premise completely cracks me up.
So far by me the worst it’s been today is bouts of heavy rain and a bit of thunder.
The curtain drain I had put on the uphill side of my resurfaced gravel driveway last autumn has worked beautifully so far, in the winter snow, the melt, and now these heavy rainstorms, which have the ground supersaturated. Might have been the best project I’ve ever done on or around the house.
I clicked through to the Morford piece, enjoyed it.
But I’m tempted to write a letter to him explaining to him that the BS false equivalency between atheists and religion people is exactly that – BS. He describes atheism as thinking that consciousness is “it”, when that isn’t what atheists think at all. That part of his piece is a little…simple.
Yes, Isis, these extreme weather events are an increasingly worrisome threat throughout the whole world. The topic warrants far more instructive and thoughtful analysis.
Suffice to say, I’m disappointed with this particular front-page FDL post which addresses nothing more than the self-evident illogic of a facile conservative talking point.
No doubt, Pat Robertson and his ilk would prefer that we continue to take the bait and be preoccupied with their every outlandish utterance.
What’s really the “sin” is the South’s lack of basement and underground shelters. They aren’t anywhere near as safe as the Midwest, where nearly everyone has such protection.
Atheists, according to yesterday’s NYT, are trying to get authorized “chaplains” in the U.S. military. Apparently chaplains fill a lot of random nonreligious needs, like counseling, meeting org. They can’t conduct religious services in religions they are not ordained in, so atheist/secular humanist chaplains could conduct no services in any org religion. But there are already chaplains in Buddhism, Hinduism, and there are more self-declared atheists in U.S. military than in the latter 2 religions.
Didn’t know that. Being from the Midwest (and not too far from an Illinois tornado alley), everyone had a basement in that part of the country. Even apartment buildings had utility rooms underground.
So why no basements in southern homes? Too liberal? Or maybe the law doesn’t require it, and it may in the Midwest? Just speculatin’.
One would like not to mention anything political when severe weather happens like this, but for years, the right wingers do just that everytime an “evil” liberal area gets hit with it. So what do you do? Ignore them, or hit back when shit happens to them?
Morford is too much fun to argue with seriously IMHO.
Zeus-Petro.
From the first wave of killer tornadoes two weeks ago:
those states hate the most! just saying… now since they hate the federal gov’t who’s going to assist them? (rhetorical question)
heh – good one and spot-on analysis.
Oh these red states duly have their hands out as far as they can get ‘em when they need fed money. You can bank on it. The rest of the time, though, they rail away about teh eeeevuls of taxation.
I read today that CA state leg Dems are threatening to cut services in CA Counties that are predominantly R and intransigent against raising taxes ever under any circumstances. State Dems are saying: ok, if you don’t want your taxes raised, you get less services. Frankly, at my stage of frustration, I’m all for this. I don’t know if it’ll fly, however.
http://www.sacbee.com/2011/04/28/3584735/democrats-threaten-to-target-cuts.html
And incompetent governors and legislators are God’s judgement against liberal states
i LOVE it!
if it were true, it could change my entire belief system! well, maybe not…
The water table is to high for basements. If you dig a hole it just fills with water.
If they are going to be literal with the BIble, I guess it is.
