It is really hard for me to understand how any woman anywhere in the United States could vote for Republican candidates given the all out war on a woman’s right to choose that the GOP has waged in the first four months of this year.
Since January there have been more than 915 pieces of legislation introduced at the State and Federal level that would restrict a woman’s right to control her own reproduction. They have been everything from the Republican controlled House passing the a bill that redefines rape or that makes it impossible to have a government subsidy for insurance that would cover abortion services.
There have been the States like Idaho where there is no exception for rape victims if they want to have an abortion after 20 weeks, or the attempt to pass a law in South Dakota which proposed justifiable homicide as an active defense for killing abortion providers.
All of these are pernicious, but there is a worse one. Now in Louisiana a radical forced-pregnancy lawmaker named John LaBruzzo has introduced a bill that would ban abortions outright. No exceptions for rape, incest, or even the life of the mother in the bill.
It goes even further, branding being involved in an abortion, for the woman and the doctor as “feticide” and proposing a maximum sentence of 15 years hard labor for the crime. Mother Jones is reporting that when Rep LaBozo, err I mean LaBruzzo’s office was contacted they said it was a mistake to include the women in the penalties. Not for any kind of compassionate reason but “because it would make the bill to difficult to pass”.
In a perverse way I do have to give Rep. LaBozo (I am going to stick with it for this human piece of dung) some credit. He is out there doing exactly what the forced pregnancy forces want as the end game, namely making it a crime to perform or have an abortion. That the anti-women forces have always shied away from criminalizing women’s part in an abortion has been a logical inconsistency in their arguments, so LaBozo coming clean is at least honest until he got called on it.
The real issue here is not his state; Rep. LaBozo says as much:
LaBruzzo says he’d like his bill to become law and “immediately go to court,” and he told a local paper that an unnamed conservative religious group asked him to propose the law for exactly that purpose.
You see the forced pregnancy folks like their chances with the Roberts Court. They think that they finally have enough votes, or will have by the time something like this appears before the High Court to get Roe v. Wade overturned.
Personally I think it is overreach but it does bring up a good point. If we have a Republican President he or she (gods greater and lesser help us all if it is Michele Bachman!) will appoint at least one Supreme Court Justice and maybe two. If they put hard Right Justices on the Court that very well could swing the weight and invalidate a woman’s right to control when and if she reproduces.
It has always been “ It’s The Supreme Court Stupid” as the final argument for putting a Democrat in the White House. Now with the attacks on a woman’s rights it has become more important than ever.
What is on your mind tonight Firedogs? The floor is yours.
