One of the tradeoffs made by the US administrations to gain support for entering into Free Trade Agreements is that these agreements impose certain standards on the parties – to protect the environment, human rights and union rights.
So what will the Obama administration do when the terms of one of those agreements are blatantly violated?
The AFL-CIO filed a legal petition on Thursday with the United States Office of Trade and Legal Affairs :
Concerning the Failure of the Government of Bahrain to Comply with its Commitments under Section 15.1 of the US-Bahrain Free Trade Agreement
Citing numerous well documented violations and noting that the General Federation of Bahraini Trade Unions which represents all workers in the kingdom has not only had its efforts to mediate the ongoing conflict turned down but union leadership has been harassed, fired and disappeared. Amongst those fired from their jobs are the Deputy General Secretary and five colleagues. And the following filing goes on to note:
The leaders of unions (both GFBTU affiliates and nonaffiliates) have suffered retaliation for their trade union activity. The nine executive members of the Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard (ASRY) trade union have been dismissed …Bahrain National Gas (BANAGAS) fired the entire executive committee of the union … The Bahrain Petroleum Company fired trade union chairman and a founder of the Bahrain trade union movement … On April 4, Rulla el Saffar, president of the Bahrain Nursing Society was detained and her whereabouts are unknown…
The vice-president and four board members of the Bahrain Teachers Association (BTA) were arrested on March 29 and the General Secretary on March 30. They continue to be held incommunicado…
And that is just a small selection.
Article 15.1 of the Free Trade Agreement requires both parties to uphold the standards of the International Labor Organization (ILO) Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work. Not only the above abuses but the ongoing suppression of peaceful political protest are clear violations of the Declaration.
This means that under the FTA, the US is required to suspend the agreement and that is what the AFL-CIO is demanding.
While the FTA was signed under Bush, Obama’s administration is required to uphold the human rights and labor standards of the Agreement.
As AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka noted in a letter to Sec. of Defense Gates which “called for “urgent political intervention…to stop [Bahrain’s] descent into dictatorship.”
The trade union movement in Bahrain is critical to democratic and peaceful coexistence in a pluralistic society…The Department should demand of its counterparts an end to the extraordinary repression taking place at the doorstep of one of America’s largest military installations (U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet). Any lesser response to this crisis undermines our moral authority.

Nobody seems to concerned that the US has descended into an Imperial Plutocracy. We have a lot of balls running around telling everyone else how to run their countries when our elite is really no different then the rest out there, except maybe a bit more arrogant and hypocritical.
All unions should withhold all political contributions to President Wingnut McAsskisser. Speak loudly and carry a big 2×4.
This move by the AFL CIO really calls out Obama not just on his lack of support for civil rights in Bahrain but also for the nonsense of these FTAs – like the one he pushed with Columbia.
They will obfuscate and lie their way out of it. Pentagon-Intel accountability and controllability by American civilians is “off the table,” like the Rebaggars have taken Pentagon-Intel budgets off the table.
is it time to once again put on those comfy shoes and get out there on the union line?
Bwahahahaha.
Was it letter from the unions sternly worded?
Has O already waggled his fingers in his ears & stuck out his tongue at them?
It’s also a “polite” aside about what’s happening in Wisconsin.
This complaint ends up in Solis’ shop. I wonder how this will work out…
Solis who.

Chief of Navy Chaplains Visits Bahrain:
MANAMA, Bahrain – Rear Adm. Mark L. Tidd, chief of Navy Chaplains visited Sailors and Marines stationed onboard Naval Support Activity, (NSA) Bahrain and ships operating in the 5th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR), April 12-20.
Press TV reports mosque destruction and torture:
Press TV: The Bahraini government forces backed by the Saudi Arabian troops are destroying mosques and places of worship. These sacrilegious acts will likely exacerbate hatred across the Muslim world. What can you tell us about the reasons behind these tactics?
Khawaja: I don’t know what the reasons are exactly, but what I can say is that you’re right and they are destroying these mosques and this will definitely cause a greater problem in Bahrain than there already is. These mosques they are demolishing have very important religious backgrounds. Some are very old and some even date back to before the al-Khalifas took over Bahrain. They are not only targeting a group of people anymore but an entire part of the country.
Press TV: According to reports, they have arrested dozens of people. Several opposition leaders have died under torture, and the security forces go to hospitals to arrest doctors and confiscate patients’ medical files. How long will this atmosphere of fear continue to get a blind eye from the West?
Khawaja: I don’t know. We have been hoping it would get more attention. There have been protests everywhere. Just yesterday I was at a protest in New York City and today I was at a protest in Washington D.C. So there are protests everywhere, and people are becoming more and more aware.
Unfortunately, it’s the governments that have remained silent about what’s happening. So what we are trying to do is to get the people to put pressure on their own governments to make a stronger stand against what’s happening in Bahrain. Physicians for Human Rights in the US actually put out a report about the atrocities committed against the medical staff in the hospitals in Bahrain.
Good for the AFL-CIO.
“So what will the Obama administration do when the terms of one of those agreements are blatantly violated?”
Nothing.
I was going to answer exactly like OhioGringo…. but he beat me to it.
But here is what I am doing about Bahrain: Postcards to Clinton, Obama, my two Senators and Representative about the horrible situation there and saying they need to act NOW in regards to Bahrain. I will also make phone calls to these offices.
Now, maybe, if 50 million Americans join me, they will start acting like decent human beings. It is a long shot, however……
And I’m betting the AFL-CIO will endorse him and give him cash anyway.
When is the rank and file going to revolt?
Come on now. Obama will get to this trade issue as soon as he he gets behind the card check issue. One thing at a time. Let’s not overwhelm Obama. After all he is a busy man making sure the banksters are taken care of.
With the AFC-CIO attempting to encourage the Obama administration to “enforce” and “apply” the FTA Schematic on any nation, just goes to prove how far the AFL-CIO has “jumped the shark” or “driven the employee-owned vehicle into the proverbial ditch.”
And how did all this come about relative to their misguided politics?
When Organized Labor “surrendered” or “capitulated” their employee-oriented political agenda, Card Check went down the tubes, and for the peons throughout the Latin America Region, these peons should be advocating for tossing Organized Labor out of the Region. Until this begins to manifest itself, Organized Labor will cater to the political elites, since they too see themselves as the political elites and eqivalent to the Kochs, Scaifes and the Mellons.
Now, we all know that Card Check, once available for our Rule of Law, and further, inserted into the FTA Schematic, the peons in the Region, will commence to benefit for America’s political astuteness. Until then STFU! :-)
Jaango
Why, they’ll be sure to look into the matter.
I’m glad some asked for this inquiry.
Bahrain is also a tax haven. I’d like to know more about whose money they’re harboring, and how we can get that money to move elsewhere.
