"Why won't BP finish cleaning up their mess?" (photo courtesy of Jim White)
Pouting Baby is talking to us again. — JW
When I make a mess, my Mommy makes sure I help clean it up. She even makes me clean it up the same day I make the mess. The people from BP made a really big mess in the Gulf of Mexico and the wetlands around the Gulf, and even though it’s been a whole year now, they are saying they finished cleaning when it really isn’t clean. My Mommy wouldn’t let me get away with that.
The Pensacola News Journal had an article in late February about BP saying they were finished cleaning, but now they have cleaned that article from their website. Lucky for us, what looks like full copies of the article are here and here. The article tells us about BP cutting back on cleanup work:
BP is out of the full-time, onshore oil cleaning business, eight months after 16,000 cleanup workers and 60 pieces of heavy machinery invaded Florida beaches to begin daily rituals of picking up tar balls and digging up submerged oil.
Now, a contingent of about 200 workers on all-terrain vehicles will patrol beaches from Perdido Key to Port St. Joe, looking for and hand-cleaning what’s left of tar balls and mats that wash up.
But it sounds like they didn’t finish the job:
“BP has finished the deep cleaning and is asking us to sign off,” said Keith Wilkins, the [Escambia] county’s point man on environmental issues. “They are comfortable with the job they’ve done, but we are not.”
I think Mr. Keith and my Mommy would get along really well.
Some of the people who worked on the early part of the cleanup or who live where the oil came ashore are really sick now, and it looks BP doesn’t care how sick these people are:
Jamie Simon worked on a barge in the oily waters for six months following the BP spill last year, cooking for the cleanup workers, washing their clothes and tidying up after them.
One year later, the 32-year-old said she still suffers from a range of debilitating health problems, including racing heartbeat, vomiting, dizziness, ear infections, swollen throat, poor sight in one eye and memory loss.
Ms. Jamie is not the only one in her town with these problems:
The local doctor, Mike Robichaux, said he has seen as many as 60 patients like Simon in recent weeks, as this small southern town of 10,000 bordered by swamp land and sugar cane fields grapples with a mysterious sickness that some believe is all BP’s fault.
When they were asked about it, BP said everything is just fine:
“Illness and injury reports were tracked and documented during the response, and the medical data indicate they did not differ appreciably from what would be expected among a workforce of this size under normal circumstances,” it [an email from BP] added.
“Mommy, does BP stand for Bad People?”

pouting baby! bp sure does stand for bad people — stay away from them little guy
Suzanne! If only we could stay away from all bad people…
Bad BP.
I can’t help pointing out that the first thing a bee girl does after she is born is clean up her room. We should send BP slobs to honeybee school for learning.
if only the justice department would do their job and put the bad people who made the mess in jail …
BP – Bull Pucky
That works.
That would be sweet! (So to speak…)
That would clean things up a bit.
Yes. This has been another episode…
The DoJ is not into cleaning up messes.
The Pentagon, OTOH, is content to make sure it noncombatant, terriss, exceedingly threatening to homeland security guys who are permanently detained, are at least equipped with adult diapers when they are moved about with ear mufflers & blocked goggles.
Happy to note that there are SOME in the USG who are concerned about messes.
Good evening.
Pouting Baby and Jim! (is that redundant?)
BP has covered up rather than cleaned up and our government, the folks who are supposed to protect us, are complicit in the matter. It’s absolute BullPucky.
If only that “nice man” Mr. Obama would make them…
Evening. What’s news, besides the usual array of treachery and death?
He’s too busy at his fundraiser/sing-alongs.
Did they cover it up with a diaper?
For one thing, Florida is in even more trouble than I thought.
Curious philosophical Q. Does a diaper represent a cleanup or a coverup.
Unfortunately no. That would’ve been far more absorbent than that nasty corexit.
I’m going to go with cover-up.
Oh dear, thread is only into the low double-digits & already I owe you a drink. Whatcher pleasure?
Milk for Pouting Baby and an Anchor Steam for me. Thanks.
Would that be coverup for $100 or coverup for $800?
evening, eCAHN – how’s the valley tonight?
Cover-up for $800, Alex.
Will take a few mins for PB’s milk to reach right temp then both will be sliding down the bar.
BTW, do you need a special certificate to bring PB into the bar?
My son’s first bar experience was at his 7th day. My late husband quipped that while he (Herb) had been going to that bar for 20 years, his son had been going there all his life.
Buzzing.
Cool diary. I missed that earlier.
A quick google reveals a wiki that links coverup with snowjob.
Hmmm. Snowjob for $800. Sounds like presidential material.
the gulf DISASTER was the final straw on this camels back…horrifying,
evil mofos
culture of death and depravity…im going
Bush’s coke + Clinton’s exploits = Snowjob.
I can do Preznit math!
And it’s still going on with so little attention. That just keeps making it worse.
Yeah, that’s just lovely. The woman is either suffering from a psychotic disorder of some kind or she believes absolutely everything she reads (and has questionable tastes in literature, I might add). It’s getting pretty ugly when a Democratic candidate can make the teabaggers look sane.
I would’ve worked Obama into that joke but he hasn’t produced ANY jobs. So… Meh.
Complicit media for $100, Alex.
how bout this?
http://www.americanrivers.org/newsroom/blog/akober-20110421-getting-the-full-story-on-fracking.html
after katrina and seeing the lack of federal response, i have to admit i wasn’t totally surprised to hear that one year later there is still oil killing critters and marshes. hell, bp denies there are health risks because the govt isn’t forcing them to admit the toxicity poisoning the gulf.
That’s a very good editing job.
Was tweeting about the fracking spill yesterday. Just disgusting.
and this
CEO kills 8 people, destroys 38 homes, and is awarded $35 million
I’m sure PG&E would balk at paying out $1 million for each home destroyed, which would be $38 million, but they have no problem rewarding failure and manslaughter with a $35 million golden parachute. What a disgrace.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110422/ap_on_re_us/us_pipe... ;
Pacific Gas & Electric Corp.’s top executive is stepping down with a $35 million retirement package following a “challenging year” that included a gas pipeline explosion in a San Francisco suburb that killed eight and destroyed 38 homes, the company announced Thursday. Chairman, chief executive and President Peter Darbee will retire on April 30, PG&E said in a statement.
Darbee spent the first half of his career in the financial services industry before joining PG&E more than a decade ago, and now plans to devote himself to nonprofit work, said Brian Hertzog, a spokesman for the parent company’s utility division, PG&E Co. Darbee, 58, will leave with a $35 million retirement package, but the value of the executive’s stock holdings could fluctuate depending on future market circumstances, he added.
this country is depraved
the country is depraved, and nobody cares enuf,to stop them …
I watch Swamp People on History, guys who hunt alligators in the Louisiana swamps. The new season just started a few weeks ago and was filmed over 30 days last September/early October. So far I haven’t seen a single mention of oil. I may well have missed it because I channel surf quite a bit.
It’s just struck me as odd that with such a monumental disaster that has likely effected some or all of the hunting grounds nobody has mentioned it.
I knew there was a link I was searching for.
Going to toddle off early tonight. Tomorrow is a travel day with lots to get done before leaving.
g’nite jim
Nite Jim and Pouting Baby!
sweet drams of a cleaner Merika…with more regulation
Oi! The Sharkies have two goals in the last minute or so. 2-0 lead. I’m a happy sports fan.
How are Florida oil beach prices doing? If they don’t go back up then pollution effects the GOP real estate speculators tend to be GOPers beach front property in Florida attracts real estate speculators I see an opening.
There’s an old old old racist joke about a word that rhymes with snowjobs that I couldn’t possibly type on FDL without getting modded.
Good night, Jim and little guy.
Oh no, we’re gonna keep pouting bb up until he starts wailing.
i think ill go all morpheus too! nite all
OK got your biochem hat on, eCAHN?
g’nite sadly
something to do with noglobs?
Nite!
I’ve got a pizza on the way and the Sharks have a 4 minute power play. Can life get any better right now?
G’niters SY
Yeppers.
Sure two more Goals!!!
Um, hesitating to say yes bc your comment sounds like a suspiciously loaded Q, which is gonna get me in trouble.
If they don’t score on this double minor I’m gonna be pissed. Although they’ll still be up two, which isn’t a bad spot to be in :)
1. Naomi Klein’s “A Hole In The World” is required reading or viewing (GritTV via YouTube) No link, y’all can google, though y’all doubtless have read it or watched her about it. We are doomed as doomed can be.
Hence 2. The killer tornadoes from last week are new on Earth in their number and intensity. One of the factors was called “particularly warm water” in the Gulf of Mexico.
eCAHNomics @ 61: You are free to reply if or as you wish, bee keep. What do you think about this?
I had a biochem hat once. I got it at a garage sale. Didn’t work.
Looks like I’ll eat my words before I eat my pizza. Sharkies score.
Oil plumes trapping heat?
SCORE!
Same general principle as in economy. Recent disaster is multiple times prior one, and ‘fix’ on this one is a joke, while prior fix (Sarbarnes-Oxley) while not honest, was at least a step in the intended direction.
Gonna say gnite all.
g’nite ecahn
Concur.
G’nite eCAHN. The bee post was a thriller!
According to Klein-according-to-ocean-scientists no one knows anything except the little they’re learning when they inspect the deep underbottom core samples. A few months ago the samples were not unusual. Since then, they show unambiguous evidence of an altered ecosystem. Tomorrow promises to show something no one can imagine today, according to the ocean scientists.
G’nite Major Yeoperson.
OT: I haven’t been around, but has anyone faced off with Gov. Goodhair to see if he still wants Texas to secede?
I find it ‘interesting’ that he is asking for my tax dollars and my local CA firefighters to help him save his state. I’m all for helping the people of TX….and all citizens in need. But someone should call the f*ucker on his prior nastiness………….arrogant sommubich.
It worked!
Oil giant BP will send $1 billion to the federal governments and the five Gulf coast states under an agreement announced Thursday to restore habitat damaged by the Deepwater Horizon spill.
Disgusting. Makes me ill to think that the 20 billion is reduced to one.
“BP pledges $1 billion to restore oil-stained Gulf” (Yahoo! Canada, Apr. 21, 1:19 PM):
A pledge. Uh-huh.
Ya know I have a Bridge for sale.. interested??
{ LOL }
Tangential– Fracking is not an improvement in the situation:
(excerpt from “Drilling Disaster, Again: Fracking Spill in PA,” Apr. 21, 2011)
Your mommy’s got more sense then our governor, pouting baby. Maybe she’d like to run for office down here?
Oh, and check out http://www.LEANweb.ORG for the good information on the spill. They have videos of people testifying about the health problems they’ve had since cleaning up or living around the spill that will break you heart. They’ve also done blood tests on all kinds of people–including a three year old–that have petroleum toxins in their bodies.
We keep getting sideswiped by national disasters and no one helps clean up the mess. Still not done with the Katrina aftermath and I doubt we’ll ever be done with the BP aftermath in my life time.
hugs jim!
kat
Pouting Baby please know that BP stands for Barack’s Pals.
http://renovomedia.com/politics/obama-top-recipient-of-bp-campaign-contributions/
Please tell your daddy that you want to start taking golf lessons so that you may also have pals someday. BP also stands for Big Puppy; one that likes to have its ears rubbed occasionaly in return for its affection.
