Professor Longhair and The Meters — Tipitina.
What’s on your mind?
Aloha, Suz…! How was your recent ‘fix’ of Jujube…? *g*
aloha tut — how’s paradise tonight? i got enough to last until the weekend when i go back for more — and stephanie will be there too :) she’s flying in for the weekend to see her niece for the first time.
Tipitina! That’s a restaurant in N.O. I’ve made belch promise to take me!
hey kelly — how’s denver tonight? glad ya liked it dood
Howdy there Suzanne and CT!
And speaking of New Orleans, I see that “Treme” will be back for another season very soon.
Ooh, that sounds cool…! ;-)
It rained on my okole today, went for a walk with the Sun shining and then viola, big rain drops suddenly fell on moi and the better half…!
hey chaeronea — how was your day?
hey ce — how’s ohio tonight?
i had sunshine. all day. towards sunset i had high clouds come in so no pictures but dayam, it was purty today.
CE – te j’aime. Comment Ça?
Nothing too exciting here, still waiting on getting more hours at work for the summer season, but I did get to finally get the next renters of my apartment to finally respond back about buying out some of our furniture. That may not see like much, but its taken a little over two months to get them to finally make up their minds! How are you doing tonight?
Too many times we stand aside and let the waters slip away,
And what we put off untill tomorrow has now become today;
So don’t you sit upon the shoreline and say you’re satisfied,
But choose to chance the rapids and dare to dance the tide.
two months? holy moly chaeronea. i’m doing well, thanks.
hey robert — how’s soPA tonight?
Rain, rain, go away….
alan playing the professor
Ca va bien, cherie!
Hey! how do you get diacritics here? I found “Special Characters” in Edit, but not for French…every other language found.
That’s good to hear. Yeah, I was surprised too, basically two gals will be living in the apartment I have now next year, but really didn’t want to commit on any reasonable offer for various things that would be much easier to leave. It was just frustrating because picking up a few bucks and taking a loss for the couch and coffeetables would be a lot easier than dragging them across the state, but they kept being so darn wishy washy about it. Oh well, it ended on a good note hopefully.
Just had a little bit of thunder roll this way, its getting to be that time of year.
Cold and stormy. Very rainy and thunderstorms. Poor potted pansies out front — hope they hold on.
Seems like it’s been ‘that time of year’ for forty days and forty nights around here….
i was looking at the severe weather page earlier and wow…
=/ We need it out this way, gladly steal some away from you.
We have much more than enough to share with the dry….
was the wettest march on record in portland — rained every day but one and i think that one, the rain fell only on the coast.
I wish I had a geiger counter. Bet my lawn would crackle….
Well, I have an old “Alt+” code table. This one looks pretty good though.
So what you do is hold down the ALT key, type a 0 and then the symbols in the 3rd column.
Holding down ALT key + 0153 then releasing would give the ™ symbol.
April showers bring May flowers, or one may wish… it was sunny all weekend though.
It has been a lovely (wet rainy chilly) day here with grape hyacinths and dandelions growing in my front yard. My poppies will bloom soon.
jazz me blues
Open System Preferences (it’s in the Dock). Select (if you want it available always) “Show Keyboard and Character Viewer in menu bar”. When you open it, you’ll see all the possible fonts and characters in your system. It’s massive.
hey margot — how ya doing tonight?
hey aitch — how ya doing tonight?
Oh yes! I’ve used that in blogging at work. Let’s see…
Oye Como Va and goodnight.
doing good, and you? I like your music, I’d never heard this before.
We’ve had 2 snows this April with 4-6″ each and we’re due for another 3-6 tomorrow…so gimmie some a that nice wet rain Baby this snow is fuckin’ with the Walleye spawn for sure!
Keep the tunes hot and the conversation hotter, Sister Suzanne, I gotta go ta bed so I ken get up and do it all over again. Come and join us here in Cheeseland in the next couple a months, gunna have some recall fun and there’s plenty ta share Dear Heart.
hey mr why — thanks and g’nite
hey norske — always a pleasure to see your fonts dood. ya’ll are doing good work comrade
Pas mal, ça va?
Maybe tomorrow, doG willing and the creek don’t rise, I’ll be able to get the main vegetable garden in.
Fuck free water.
i believe snow in april is just forking cruel
hey openhope — how’s the sound tonight? sunshine today was great but its still too wet to plant anything and the grass is too wet to mow.
Buckets of cold rain is cruel, also.
true dat — we got boatloads of buckets this year
The System Pref and Character Viewer is easy, a double click and it’s inserted. For ‘foreign’ languages like French, the Latin submenu under European is what you want.
If you’re using a MacBook…
Now you must say “Snow on spinach and peas always makes them better” in French, you commie.
WNY usually picks up at least one or two patches of snow in April, back in high school we got almost a foot overnight, only to to have it melt the next day.
Not nearly as much as Norske up there though. Keep fighting the good fight man!
It’s actually a nightclub.
hey nonp — how ya doing tonight?
Yeah, we got sunshine with a steady, nasty breeze/wind. However, hopefully that wind will have dried out my planting rows. I kicked ass last fall and prepared mounds for planting to get them above the wet line. Put them to bed with an incredible Alfalfa mulch that I rolled back right before a major rain event. Shit.
I thought I’d be getting a jump on Spring when I was doing it. Guess Spring had other plans!
That quibble does not relieve Mr. B from taking me there, and eating something and drinking many things. So…!
“April had a blizzard just to show she didn’t care” — Dar Williams, Spring Street
Sounds like a pretty interesting place to go though!
been a dayam chilly spring too — i’ve yet to have a run around the house barefoot day so far this year
Spring is getting even with us for saying how beautiful the first snow of last winter was.
Spring is very vain….
Well, I got all the way to Show keyboard and Character Views, not in menu bar but in search box, and clicked on the box. Hoped to see an OK box, but stopped there. Sadly, did not see fonts and characters. Will look again. Thanks!
I know that ‘cut the grass’ in French it is ‘mow ze lawn’. I know that ‘buffet’ means ‘not enough chairs’. But I won’t eat Green Giant vegs b/c in the pics he stands over the corn and pees.
Gardens in Colorado in April….”Back in MY day we didn’t dream of planting before Memorial Day”…*g*
We’ve had an unusually warm 20 years according to the old-timers here in the North Puget. They say these colder patterns for spring are actually in line with their diary accounts from childhood. ? They used to have snow as a winter regularity. Now it’s a special event.
Don’t get hung up on instructions. For instance I’ve always wondered what the hell ALT + 0 plus any 3 characters would make.
So ALT + 0666 = š heh. Shhh!
I so wish to love you. Why must you fail me? :(
Suz iz gonna hate me if I start teaching remedial French on her thread.
And all you good commies already know French, amiright?
You want Show Character Viewer. Then you want European Scripts, and click the arrow to open the submenu, then Latin.
Show me your cedilla!
You are hilarious!
Make that a double….
The French in France tried, and usually they sang their sympathy. O how I loved it there!
the only french i know i learned from pepe le pew
Don’t encourage him…! *gah*
The only French I know
Is Bridget Bardot….
Ooooh, la la!
Second only to Foghorn Leghorn among my everlasting loves!
He is quite sexy. J’approve.
hard to find pepe on the utubes…. i’ve featured him several times on sat nite toons but tis hard to find the old classic pepes lately
Hey, I found it! Those darned French this and that!
Je suis un plagiariste, ç’est dommage.
i say, i say foghorn rocks!
I’m guessing at some Afrikaans that I see from a Facebook friend. “Lekker slaap” means something like good night or sweet dreams, I think.
Ask Jane for a refund. *g*
When my daughter is angry with me, she curses me in French.
I don’t know why, so don’t ask….
i need to find me a course that offers to introduce french in five easy liaisons
Found! And I’m writing this down….thanks! (Horns playing French National Anthem, La Marseillaise).
*hanging out with these damn French commies late at night – WHY? WHY? WHY?*
Ooh! I hear a lot of that at the photocopier when we have French guests.
Thought you were une consultante… non? Si?
You, madame, need a spannking. Hmph.
Wait,…tres kewl isn’t french?
May the doggess be with you!
Heh. I just bagged the Marseillaise same time as you at #92.
i learned some french from this too
unfortunately, no liaisons means yes i am :)
They think that we DON’T know…
happy lucky 100 kelly!!!
Et Le centième! Ha ha ha!
La nuit est à moi! [The night is MINE!]
I think cursing in a language you invested money and time learning would be satisfying.
I, myself am the brunt of the Euro joke.
” If you speak 3 languages you are trilingual.”
” If you speak 2 languages you are bilingual.”
” If you speak 1 language you are American.”
Had to open Dashboard and paste that into the translation app.
Bon soire, mes amis!
Damn them Frenchies and their great pastries, restaurants and their wine, women and song….
Why are they not suffering like everybody else is supposed to?
hey bg — how’s nm tonight?
Have you viewed Labelle’s Can I Speak To You Before You Go To Hollywood? My fave Labelle.
(No link, there’s a great live version on YT, but it’s quite long…)
Because they’re sensible. The Germans are too.
And at this point we’re only going to argue about style.
(A time ago recently I asked Kelly if the ‘L’ weren’t redundant, as the ‘G’ covers the ‘L’, he passed, as usual.)
the french have it tough learning ‘merican
Sigh, Why, WHY can’t we live there? I mean, I would work hard.
i’ll look for it and give it a listen. i love her voice
C’est la vie….
bgrothus! Merde alors! I’m going to tell your mother, you potty mouth!
Two different groups of people deserving their own identity.
nope, just old and straight
we need an french commune for fdlers to escape to
I second that! It sucks.
We sure do… goodnight kisses to all!
I don’t argue or debate on the Internet — it’s futile.
Sweet dreams, ChristineEdmonson.
All three sing, it’s a dramatic wonder.
Gomez: Oh, Tish, that’s French.
Gomez: Cara mia.
Morticia: Don’t torture yourself, Gomez. That’s my job.
You’re not old by any definition.
Must you taunt?
No, Lesbians are entitled to the “L.” “G” is not redundant for women.
“Gay” comes from “gay cat” a turn-of-the-century prison term for a handsome young man who would yield favors in said prison for protection.
“Lesbian” comes from the Isle of Lesbos, particularly a poetess of Catullus’ time who was a famous poetess and lover of women.
Lesbian is actually the older term.
some days i feel older than i am — today is one of them. on the plus side, its balanced out by those days when i feel like a 17 year old again
Um, no, this one
this takes me right back
I didn’t think I was arguing or debating. But, apparently, that’s one of my blind spots as a personality.
Sorry. I’m saying that Lesbians are women and Gays are men and no one under the Sun has figured out a way to keep those two genders on an even keel without allowing them their own identity.
Whew. That was a mouthful.
I have enjoyed several evenings at Tipitina’s. It is a great music club.
I used to take a taxi back to the Cafe’ Du Monde and sober up with chicory coffee, biegnets, and the soulful late night sounds of the Crescent City. Those were the days.
hey oldgold — how ya doing tonight?
‘Gay’ comprises both despite etymology. ‘She’s gay’ and “He’s gay’ won’t be confusing to anyone, and they’re ordinary locutions now. But my broader point the other day was that frigid women and impotent men, and asexual people who couldn’t care less, must feel excluded from the current embraces of sexualities, and I think they need to be included in our embrace of humanity and caring.
Love comes with many labels, un ami….
A better song is “Out here on my own” from Fame.
Says it better from my point of view.
Oh, you weren’t arguing at all. I would have to disagree or argue in response, and it’s futile to do so on the Internet. I make my point, you make yours, and we hang out together, which is very cool.
Fine. Enjoyed your music tonight. It brought back some good memories.
Ever heard this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtfEfO_BnoU&feature=list_related&playnext=1&list=MLGxdCwVVULXeNUG1uyf5N9a-cS4wL6Nd4
To add – I was homeless when I saw that movie and heard that song for the first time.
I’ll. Never. Forget.
There are no frigid women, only a vain search for a soulmate.
There are no impotent men, just a tragic lack of female understanding.
There are no asexual people, just a combination of both of the above made worse by too much thinking….
oh that’s sweet oldgold — its familiar it a not been heard in long time kinda way…. love that acordian and his voice. from the 60′s?
With all due respect, no.
You sound like my father explaining to me, a woman, why it was a folly to introduce words as clunky as Congressperson into our vocabulary, just awkward. In his mind, we should make due with Congressman until something better was agreed upon.
There is no time to wait for the new definitions to appeal to the masses. We have to define them and embrace them together.
There is sexual dysfunction.
I’m always so excited when I hear people with no similar experience tell me what my experience was/is like./s
Drives me nuts. Sounds like the same thing for you.
Yes. It was recorded in 1961.
Canned Heat did an rendition of Sugar Bee in 1970. It is not nearly as good.
I really try to be mellow and not formidable. I’m so fuck that one up!
A great movie, every frame of it. Alan Parker made many great movies. I saw Fame when I was already old, but thrilled to its hopeness: I never relinquished The Search, not even as we speak.
My query about the ‘L’ is provocative. not proscriptive. When I rented an apartment in a duplex with a poet living downstairs, my gf said, “She’s gay, you know” (I knew). I asked, “What’s your point?” She couldn’t answer my mean question. It’s easy to despise me sometimes.
Note to Suzanne: When I moved in, I played the ‘Janis’ movie the 2nd or 3rd night I was there, and the poet left me a welcome note and a candle gift. The note asked me to keep the noise down during the times and days she specified.
i was living in algiers, across the river from n’orleans, from 60-63. was exposed to all kinda music in those days when i was so young and impressionable.
That would have been an interesting place to come of age.
Tipitina!! That is a joint in New Orleans. I have been bad there a few times.
hey mary mac — how’s sac tonight?
I know it’s a different Algiers, but Albert Camus’ “Summer In Algiers” is a must read. Unhappily it’s not on the net.
I was in New Orleans for a week, a month before Katrina.
I want to die there….
kisses. C’est oui?
mary mac — there is a part of me that thinks you have been bad a few times everywhere you have been :)
Look, it doesn’t work for everyone, but all I can say for myself is this series of clichés:
* Don’t take one ounce of shit from Anybody, Ever.
* In the World of Impossible to be me, it’s Impossible to be free.
* Those who take, always will – Those who give are damn near nil.
* The only way to be Equal is to Act Like It.
* Acquaintances are cheap, true friends are dear; know the difference.
my brother was born there and went there to get married… his plan was to retire there and live out his days.. but the fucking stock market wiped out all his savings toward retirement
Ha! It is a great place to die. New Orleans is a brilliant combination of light and dark.
Maybe, maybe not….
Lillian Hellman wrote a great book about growing up in New Orleans. “Pentimento”
I love that word.
False premise, but it’s a free country. I resent the implications but won’t harbor any of it. Tomorrow I wake anew.
Bad is good. Within moderation. Who’s definition of moderation I have no clue. :]
Moderation is a word not often muttered in New Orleans.
Have you been able to find Jill Tweedie’s writings? I mentioned them a time ago. Je t’embrasse et plus.
excess in moderation
That is so sad. When I retired in 2007, my retirement councelor urged me to withdraw $90,000 from my account and roll it over in a higher yield stock market investment.
Even then, I was very aware of the thieves that had taken over financial products on Wall Street; so I passed and didn’t withdraw a dime.
I get 4% annual interest on my retirement fund. I won’t be rich, but it is very secure….
Semantics, semantics!! I’d have loved to visit New Orleans.
You make me think of Nora Helmer (in Ibsen’s A Doll House), telling her husband Helmer of the ‘sin’ he and her father committed against her, making her live with their opinions and beliefs.
Hey, Margot, I was watching Ashley Judd and Tavis Smiley. . .hope all is well w/you.
No, I’ve never heard of Jill Tweedie. I’ll google her tomorrow.
’bout time for me to turn back into a pumpkin folks. thanks for letting me hang out with ya tonight
Ashley Judd and Tavis Smiley? Strange combo.
Sins of the fathers. and all that good human story. It’s real.
Good night, Suzanne.
You were homeless because you were gay? Did you eat out of a garbage can when your parents threw you out of the house? You did unutterable things on this blog to get shelter?
That’s my basis from long ago.
You have some similar experience?
That’s an extraordinary performance. The look on the faces in the audience — part astonishment, part deliverance, part envy — tells a lot. There are many live versions of her Maybe, and only by hearing them can you know of Janis’s wish for perfection: her moans are carefully structured and duplicated in all the versions.
Everyone knows it’s a cover of The Chantels ‘Maybe’. They were the first ‘all-girl’ group to make it.
Bonne nuit, Suzanne.
Equivalent, but far from similar. What’s your point?
Thanks again as always, Sweetie. Be well and healthy.
AJ has a book out, Smiley was interviewing her. She is very articulate. She got a Master’s degree from Harvard last year, totally a feminist.
All is well, except my dog has abandoned me for the safety of son’s room (thunder and lightning scares her).
I like both of them.
I’m thinking the point is using your intellectual strengths to find a more active and less institutionally imposed way of looking at the people who are a part of your chosen community.
peace, laughter, strength
I just become absolutely infuriated upon casual dismissal. Call it a failing, I don’t care.
I know what it’s like to be completely down and out, discarded. And it’s the worst feeling in the world.
People who dismiss that, and casually, just piss me off no end.
Is this the rabbit chasing dog? Ever since I misread a comment of your’s to Suzanne, I’ve been visualizing Sarah Palin as a hound chasing da bunnies. Can’t get it out of my head.
I promised myself I would go to bed early. So, I guess I will go to bed now and try for early another nite.
Mr. Sadness went outside, and I hate it that he won’t come in. Nothing I can do but be happy when he comes in for breakfast. . .
I hear you. I feel more anger when it’s in a forum where I automatically expect more. Then it’s a total bitch slap and I’m on my feet.
I have an unobtainable sense of social justice. I was born with it.
I have no institutionally imposed way of looking at anything, the benefit and cost of alienation. Your indictment surprises me. We are all in this together as inextricable partners. No, not all, some are hopeless and inimical.
Heh. Me and my bathrobe, with me in it, are going to take a quick walk around the block as I’m so goddamn pissed off this second.
If I’m not pegged as a lunatic [since people outside their houses in their bathrobes look a bit nutty] and make it back to my porch, well bless me.
Stay safe and be happy, Kelly.
The beauty is within you. Or so they tell me.
The old Colo. joke was to buy a $10 dog and kick the shit out of it !
Bathrobes and walks sound so much more civilized.
You can not simultaneously insult someone and wish them happiness.
We have a problem here.
This is Late Late Night FDL – a safe place to unwind and yuck it up – Suzanne’s house. Let’s respect that, and in the words of one of our own, “Be Good To Each Other”.
Happy 420 !
Is that cuz I brought up the old cowboy cliche? About the $10 dog?
It was not.
oh now, comparing a rabbit dog (that’s what they call beagles in my area) to Palin is cruel! But yes, this is the rabbit-hunting dog. Well, she chases them…
Thanks, I was feeling guilty.
sweet dreams, lurk
If I insulted Kelly I never intended to do so. On the contrary, I like him a lot here. I’ve let his barbs (or insults) pass by without replying or engaging him. Anyway, I can insult someone and also wish them happiness, but it can’t be ‘simultaneous’ since the wish for happiness comes last and is the only important part.
