Pictured: the Republicans' 2012 front-runner.
The GOP whining in the Village Daily about their 2012 crop of circus geeks and snake handlers is really quite awesome.
The dissatisfaction with the likely GOP field — long whispered among party activists, operatives and elected officials — is growing more audible in the House and Senate.
Interviews on both sides of the Capitol have revealed widespread concern about the lackluster quality of the current crop of candidates and little consensus on who Republican senators and House members would like to see in the race.
[snip]
Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk, a Naval reservist, added: “I’m a military guy, so we always like Petraeus, but he’s currently running the war.”
[snip]
Another House Republican from a state with an early nominating contest expressed his frustration: “I’m not sure Donald Trump is the answer.”
“A number of people where I live are excited about Chris Christie, but he’s not running,” said Dent. “My sense is that people back home want to see more options.”
North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr flatly predicted: “We’re going to see other folks.”
Shrugged Arkansas Sen. John Boozman: “Republicans have always been for who’s next in line, and there’s nobody in line.”
Ouch. The Quitter and Willard are officially nobodies.
And here’s the kicker.
“I don’t see anyone in the current field right now, and people say that to me, as well. I’m reflecting what I hear,” said California Rep. David Dreier, chairman of the House Rules Committee. [...]
“Everybody’s looking for a Ronald Reagan, and they don’t see one.”

The Republicans have realized they don’t need to have their candidate elected president as long as Obama is in the WH. He’s their ace in the hole. He’s the working and middle classes A hole.
Someone should start a site called PetraeusWatch. Cuz he’s definitely coming to run eventually. Bank on it.
And yeah, they’re all pathetic.
[insert content trolling here]
All the GOP candidates might suck, but at least they’ve got a really good budget proposal…
and perfectly quaffed hair.
Good point. It’s the boat resin that keeps it neat all day long…
Ronald Reagan wouldn’t have a chance in hell of ever getting the nomination in the current republican party. He was no where near as corporate servile as these jackasses. He’d be a huckabee-wannabe now, on the outside with no hope of ever getting the nomination becoz he would never get the money to run … the corporations get a lot bigger payoff from these gop jackasses than they ever got from Reagan.
Z
What all these people are missing is that due to teabagger pressure, every GOP primary candidate is going to be as batshit crazy as it’s possible to be, leaving Vichycrat Obama looking tolerable by comparison.
That’s how he wins. He can be hard right and still take home all the marbles. Maybe.
Maybe they could reanimate the corpse of Herbert Hoover. He had some good policies…
Democrats’ Progressive Base: The Democratic Party’s Presidential Candidate Sucks
It’s a brilliant strategy by the Republicans.
No, he wouldn’t. He passed one of the most liberal abortion laws in the country and he raised taxes.
So right there, he loses the Club for Growth and the fundies.
Reagan would be “the foreign policy” candidate for his hawkishness, and the current leader in that category among GOP hopefuls, according to polling, is, ahem, Palin.
Unless more Progressives wake the fuck up and realize that a sane seeming neoliberal is far more dangerous than a crazy sounding wingnut.
Obama is the sitting President, which is almost enough in itself.
Obama is going to raise a $billion, which is enough in itself.
Obama has no opponent with national appeal (just Confederate appeal), which is almost enough in itself.
Huckabee is now on record supporting slavery. Not a good position for the general.
Romney is still hopeless.
Palin and Gingrich aren’t running, they are just raising money.
Yep. Hell Reagan looks liberal as hell next to Obama.
I suspect this story was planted by the “Liz Cheney 2012″ people, to clear the riff-raff from the field.
Bottom line folks both parties no longer care to put up viable candidates anymore. They know it matters not who is elected, and can no longer bother to pretend. heads we lose tails we lose…..and as long as we go along with it they know there is not a bloody thing we can do about it.
“I’m not sure Donald Trump is the answer.” Now that’s an understatement.
Right?
He’s not sure? Really?
That’s because she can stand on her front porch and keep an eye on those Commie Bastards.
Disagree. They really don’t have a bench.
Disagree. Citizens may not be able to stop the wars, but I don’t think most people are going to vote in a military president.
Reagan, Nixon and Eisenhower, none of whom could make the cut these days…especially not Ike.
My feeling is that Huckabee is not going to run. He keep praising Haley Barbour which would be strange for a rival. Just MO.
Seriously, it’s was in the polling. I guess she’s the most neocon of the neocons.
I was actually surprised Newt wasn’t on top.
It’s no better on the Democratic side, that’s for sure!
Scary how true that is.
He’d have to give up his cushy FoxPac gig, as would Princess Dumbass…
Kind of tired of voting for a new Mob Boss every four years.
The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the political demise of sellouts.
A new party must present viable candidates in order to overthrow this shitty establishment. Out with the entrenched. In with real representatives of the people. And when the new party becomes entrenched, another new one will be needed to replace it.
The only reason they probably won’t field a legitimate candidate is because Obama has oriented his presidency toward fulfilling the demands of corporate power. Why would ruling corporations destabilize that state of affairs? Right now the GOP acts as a magnet to pull dem politicians further to the right and terrifies dem constituencies into voting for incumbent democrats. In my opinion, there’s really nothing to see here. It’s the same dynamic we’ve seen for the past 30 years.
Depends on what the question is.
Is there a potential candidate who will never run but will tease everyone for two years and never stop spewing excrement from his mouth and give cable news higher ratings with his clownish ass hattery? Yes: Donald Trump
We’ll see.
It will be Huckabee and Romney, one will be on top and one on the bottom. Wake me when it’s all over.
Blue Texan, I think the next subtitle should be “Progressives: Our Democrat Candidate Sucks!!!”
You’re talking about Donald Trump, right? Mitt Romney? Virginia Fox?
That tree of liberty is getting a lot of fertilizer from all the crap teabaggers are hurling at it.
Is that snark?
Knox said it all..
‘Democrats’ Progressive Base: The Democratic Party’s Presidential Candidate Sucks’
Lie down with batshit crazy people, get up with batshit crazy people.
I agree. The only reason they will run anyone at all is to help the down line races. If it were just for the Presidency, they would save the money. They already have the Republican they need to carry out their policies.
Of course, the logic runs both ways. Why does Obama need a billion bucks if he’s a shoe-in already?
Yeah, Reagan who did not believe in regulations and who thought ketchup was a vegetable… even with high fructose corn syrup.
{ LOL } You sure have a way with words, eCAHN.
What about Caligula? Can they exhume Caligula?
I think that’s sadly the case. Nobody any good would want the damn job anyway. It is long hours, low pay, and if you have what it takes, you can do better in banking. The Pres is just a paid flunky nowadays.
Our what now?
He wants a billion dollars for his ego. Most ego- driven human I have ever seen. He appears to think he was elected king.
Cheney already had his 2 terms.
and where is this new party? If one were to emerge do you know how long it would take for this party to have enough seats in congress to be able to do anything of significance? years. how is this party going to get its message heard above the billions being spent by the entrenched system? A new party even it could emerge in the current system would take so long to have any real power, and by then what little semblance we have of rule of law, freedom, middle class, etc will have long vanished.
I don’t know, obama seems to be pretty good
Pluses: strong on defense
Minuses: Pagan, probably teh gey
Edit: Responded to wrong comment. Sorry. Because he is for sale. Money must be exchanged.
And, me, all out of batshit crazy flea powder. *g*
The difference between the parties is that R’s suck ass and D’s suck testicle.
Not to mention incestuous.
Edit: And add “dead” to the pros.
I found one! Guess they had their gay blinders on.
Well, he did begin life as a Democrat… before he switched his party to Republican.
He doesn’t count, silly. Only the adopted son of Raygun counts.
Obama is their bench.
Because he was a racist asshole, yep.
Just like his first two marriages, right? Those don’t count towards his family values cred.
I thought they were looking for someone with some of President Ron Reagan’s success as a Republican. Not necessarily the name. And, I don’t see what his son’s sexuality has to do with it anyway.
:)
These Republicans want Obama to win. That’s why.
In Obama, here is someone who pushes radical tax cuts for the millionaires, puts social security, medicare and medicaid, and and other middle and working class entitlements on the chopping block. What is not to like about Obama for these (social liberal/economic conservatives)neoliberal Republicans?
What about the Working Families Party?
There are people trying to make it viable… I suspect that if we started posting about it, it might lead to something.
For example, note that Trump, like Ron Paul, is against the Iraq War. The Corporate Republicans will be closer to Obama than they are to Trump!! At least Trump is real.
Personally, I am unexcited about the Democratic Presidential field.
Though we all cheer for weak Republican prospects, I am afraid the end result is weak Democrats in a race to the bottom that serves no one but corporations and other small segments of the population who are able to leverage the weakness to forward their radical agendas.
Krugman outlines Obama’s tragic cave to the conservative elite. The costs off his cave in policy is so tragic for so many our neediest as it takes almost all the Democratic programs heralded as party planks to the political landfill to be unceremoniously dumped. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/11/opinion/11krugman.html?src=ISMR_HP_LO_MST_FB What a tool Obama turned out to be endless war, healthcare for the well to do and nothing for the rest of us. His policy and budget is so heartless one has only tears for the underclass being created.
I respect your point of view, but if we wait until tomorrow, it will never come. There are good people in the Democratic Party and we all know who they are, but as an instituttion, it’s been hollowed out and corrupted beyond repair. I say we start working on a new party and we do it today.
Ah,yes. I’ve heard good things about them as well.
TPTB probably want Obama to remain in the WH since who else but him could nationalize Romneycare in his first term and possibly even take a ride on the third rail with Social Security. With Obama in the WH, Obama will do everything the Democrats try to scare us about Republicans.
I say again: Unless he was molesting children sometime in his past, David Petraeus can snap his fingers and have the GOP nomination for 2012.
And if he takes it, he’ll probably win, going away. He’s not an out-and-out bible zombie, nor, an already-rejected loser talking shitspeak…therefore, he can probably beat Obama with one hand tied behind his back.
No George Bush to save Mr. Centrist, in this one.
It took a Republican to “open” China to the West. It will take a Democrat to trash the philosophy and concrete expressions of the New Deal. The Plutocracy has found just the Quisling to do it.
Wiki has a piece on the WFP. Gotta like their platform.
Of course as soon as it’s considered viable, the smears will come fast and furious.
You’re right about that!
Nobody listens to the establishment RINO Boobs mentioned in this post anyway. Any current GOP potential candidate will destroy Obama…the approval numbers and economic indicators dont lie.
I said this on an earlier thread today, and I feel the same goes here:
Cue the Kabuki Show.
The Repubs parade around a bunch if flaming idiots, racists, dingbats & nutbars bc the Koch Brothers have figured out that it’s a winning formula to distract the rubes. The Southern Strategy is ever reliable in making a signifant percentage of the population believe that their “needs” are being catered to by the PTB. Works like a charm.
Obama’s the fair-haired boy of the upper 1%. My bet is that the Great Pretender will win and win big. Why not? Obama does exactly what the Oligarchy wants… every frickin’ damn time. He’s very very useful to them.
So all the rest of this shite is just Kabuki Show put on the entertainment of the masses. Too frackin’ bad that we have to waste so g-damned much money on a Kabuki Show.
Not sure how well Betrayus would do in a general election considering how most Americans feel about military adventurism just now.
Unfortunately, since none of us are perfect, you’re right, of course. But, I suppose since that’s the case, I shouldn’t allow my imperfections to keep me from standing up and saying what I believe. What if they found out about my “issues”. Know what I mean?
They should take a closer look at Gary Johnson.
I was trying to say that earlier. You said it much better.
At least tea partiers think they’re taking on the establishment in some way.
Far too many on the left will just vote for Obama.
Norskeflamerthrower thinks there is a coalition of support that can grow out of the Wisconsin alliance of youth and labor.
The Progressives started there. How fitting a setting for a national alliance.
Note the crickets from MSM. They are aware of this potential and are studiously ignoring it.
You’re identifying part of the problem. The establishment has made it nearly impossible to organize in order to oppose it.
There was a time when the Republican Party was new. There was a time when the Democratic Party was new.
If you’re saying that there’s no possibility for a new party that is for the people and that people can support to electoral victory, then you’re saying that we should all just shut up and start enjoying being screwed royally.
Who needs Reagan when we have Obama!!!
The dissatisfaction with the likely GOP field …is growing more audible in the House and Senate.
[sigh!] Then why in hell don’t they and Obama just come out of the closet and nominate Obama????
Then we can have a REAL Democratic Party.
And as Southern Dragon is so apt to say: “No war but class war”
If Wisconsin is a microcosm, the birth of a new movement could be at hand.
We are all Egypt now.
Sure, but let’s face it: It’s a heck of a lot easier to believe that you’re “taking on the establishment” when the “establishment, itself, sets up a mini-Kabuki Show in which Tea Partiers can direct their “rage.”
The Tea Party is largely funded by David Koch, their “rallies” get tons of media on Fox & all the related media entities and then there’s the 24/7/365 spin cycle on Fox, Clear Channel, etc.
Just saying…
IMO the best shot for a military type at the Presidency has come and gone. That said, I’m always wrong about these things.
Absolutely. I think the Obama campaign knows this, too.
FWIW, this is from yesterday’s Times Magazine:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/10/magazine/mag-10lede-t.html?_r=1&ref=magazine
Feh! Egyptians have better cell phone service.
And would constitute a badge of legitimacy.
OBAMA WHITE HOUSE HAS DONE MORE TO DIVIDE DEMOCRATS THAN TO DEFEAT REPUBLICANS
The Republicons and or Teabaggers DIDN’T create the disillusionment of Democrats; the Obama, Biden, Emanuel, Gibbs, Summers, Geithner WHITE HOUSE DID!
Making the calculated decision that they could afford to IGNORE liberal and progressive voters was IMMEASURABLY DESTRUCTIVE to Democrats! At times, Gibbs sounded like a faux news spokesman.
The abandonment of Howard Dean was TREACHEROUS and SELF-DEFEATING to Democrats! How many NEW Democrats did Tim Kaine and Rahm Emanuel get elected?
The messaging/communication mismanagement of health care reform legislation was a smoke and mirrors face-saving public relations disaster for Democrats!
Openly and repeatedly criticizing the “professional left” was political FRATRICIDE. Liberals and progressives felt BETRAYED! Voters made INDIVIDUAL decisions to sit out the midterm elections. Democratic voters staying home wasn’t ORGANIZED; it was a spontaneous en masse reaction to feelings of ANGER and DISAPPOINTMENT.
APPEASING Republicons, Blue Dogs, the religious right and perpetuating Bush’s wars, legal battles, secrecy and corporate protectionism/favoritism, while the working class was losing their jobs and their homes, made traditional Democrats feel HOPELESSLY FORSAKEN!
Who was the Obama White House’s political advisor….Karl Rove?
Democrats should have blown the looney tunes GOP away, but due to the repeated political and PR miscalculations of the selectively deaf and dumb Obama White House, the GOP staged what should have been an IMPOSSIBLE comeback. This should never have happened. To deny that the Obama White House needlessly ENABLED it when they could have PREVENTED it is every bit as self-delusional as today’s Teabaggers believing that Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh and Jim DeMint are selfless servants of working class Americans.
…hey, let’s just listen to Boehner and the failed GOP, and go back to cut taxes / cut govt that we tried for the 3 decades of the Reagan/Bush era. In fact, let’s get ANOTHER big tax cut to the wealthiest as we did in 1981 and 2001.
I mean, that worked SO well to deliver Trickle Down prosperity. Almost nobody is unemployed now. And the banks and oil drillers and health insurers, heck – they POLICED THEMSELVES!!! Get government out of the WAY by golly!
Abe Lincoln would have said;
“You can fool some of the people, ALL of the time”… ;^)

Reagan looks like a tree hugging bleeding heart compared to corporate tool, O.
It’s been confirmed!
“Using data from MRI scans, researchers at the University College London found that self-described liberals have a larger anterior cingulate cortex–a gray matter of the brain associated with understanding complexity. Meanwhile, self-described conservatives are more likely to have a larger amygdala, an almond-shaped area that is associated with fear and anxiety.”

Sigh – but WE DO HAVE A GOOD BUDGET PROPOSAL FROM THE LEFT.
From US Representative Michael Honda, a member of the House Budget Committee and the Congressional Progressive Caucus, we get this very interest alternarive budget to the Ryan Plan – but has Gergen discussed this as “serious”, or ideed has it goy any Sunday media play?
http://cpc.grijalva.house.gov/index.cfm?sectionid=70§iontree=5,70
Over 10 year Window)

Can we work around Obama?

“Seriously, it’s was in the polling. I guess she’s the most neocon of the neocons.
I was actually surprised Newt wasn’t on top.”
Do you mean Newt on top of Palkin?
Now, there’s a picture…
It appears neither party can attract decent candidates. Seems to me like we a new party that can.
Haven’t had time to read all this, but noticed in Huffington Post:
“GOP Lawmakers Concerned About Quality Of GOP Presidential Pool”
That’s because they look just like the GOP constituency!
That was Nancy, or her astrologer, whatever her (his?) name was. She made every relevant decision that ever came down the pike… except for maybe the Ketchup thingy. Ronnie proly got that one from his mom.
Check out Ryan’s picture against that of the Gipper above. A little hero worship?
http://firedoglake.com/2011/01/28/ayn-rand-fanboy-paul-ryan-used-social-security-hammock-to-put-himself-through-college/
I agree with Republicans: “Congressional Republicans: All Our Presidential Candidates Suck”. In my book almost all Republicans suck.
But then, even though I worked for Obama after Clinton lost in the New Hampshire primary. I think for the most part Obama sucks as well and he is owned by Wall Street, especially Goldman Sachs, surrounding himself with those that CAUSED the collapse of the economy. He also keeps cow-yowing to the wealth who have never paid their share. They just continue to steal from the poor!
I wonder if anyone will make a 3rd party bid? Seems like now is the time— the GOP hates their leading candidates, and Democrats aren’t exactly thrilled with Obama. If ever we are going to take down this rotten 2-party system, this seems like an opportune moment.
Really don’t think anyone has the nerve–or the dough. Independents or greens could try, but they already have no traction to speak of. When the Republican party began, it was to replace a political party that was no more. I think it would take something like that today. Of course, Democratic party leadership seems to have taken a hike, so maybe that would qualify…
I think former Presidents Reagan, Nixon, and Eisenhower COULD get elected today. Why? Because they are all white, male, and authoritarian type personalities which go over well with conservatives.
“Interviews on both sides of the Capitol have revealed widespread concern about the lackluster quality of the current crop of candidates”
Since when has quality mattered? They are only a public image on TV, and enough advertising dollars can polish any turd. Reagan himself is perhaps the most definitive example of this. In light of the realities of corporate financing of candidates, the centrality of looking good on TV, and the enormous sums of money it takes to win the WH or Congress, the owning class should just forgo all the bullshit and put up computer-generated candidates. It would amount to the same thing. And we could all stop kidding ourselves that the shadow was something more than a shadow.
‘Dragon, Petraeus didn’t conjure up the Afghan and Iraq adventurism, and if the shit hits the fan in either place between now and November of 2012, the GOP is going to claim that it’s Obama’s fault. With, it must be admitted, a fair degree of truth, since he’s had the time (and the mandate) to get us out, and didn’t.
The short of it is; Petraeus hasn’t got all that much warbot tar sticking to him. He’s just following orders. :o)
And let’s face it: the repubs are getting more desperate by the week.
Of course, if Petraeus is willing to take the CIA job, that’ll be that, for any preznintial run in 2012.
Here is the sad bottom line… All of the presidential candidates will either be neo-liberal, neo-conservative, and/or social conservatives. There is no “lesser evil” in regards to what is best for the citizens of the country. None of the candidates care about the citizens… they are all over the top narcissists or sociopaths who will be compliant with their biggest corporate funders. This is the “best” we can get for a presidential candidate in a country of over 300 million people???
Actually, I think we need more of the GOP’s corporate philosophy to be implemented. Under Bush, we didn’t have the collapse; just the threat of the collapse. It was enough to get Obama in, but not enough to make him beat hell out of the people who created it, using that big mandate we gave him.
Cowardice, stupidity, or corruption…you name it: it kept him from mounting any kind of a salvage operation.
Gotta have the whole thing, or we don’t get a “New Deal”.
Reagan for Prez…..in 2012
thats brilliant ….ill put up my$$$$$$
they would shit a brick
David Dreier is looking for a lot more than another Ronald Reagan, believe me.
He’s looking for another Mark Foley.
It’s wasn’t any different during the Clinton presidency- welfare deform, don’t ask don’t tell . . . a GOP wet dream.
At least he was married…
Have they considered the guy currently in the WH?
And the current Rs would condemn them for being too liberal.
Don’t be so modest Congress Goopers; YOU ALL SUCK!
Athenae is upstairs!
