There is so much badness, madness, and craziness going on right now that I decided today would be a day to kick back, recharge, and share with you some pictures from the recent Macy’s Flower Show in downtown Minneapolis.
The eighth floor auditorium of the circa 1902 Dayton’s Marshall Field’s Macy’s department store in the Mill City has very high ceilings, making it well-suited for the sort of annual productions that have been held there for decades. (The very best, in my opinion, was the retelling of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, where among the first things the visitors saw was a life-size Hagrid on a flying motorcycle with baby Harry in his arms. But I digress.) This year’s spring production: Flowers, in a neo-faux-classical setting.
The elevators were jammed, so we took the escalators all the way up from skyway level on the second floor. Getting out onto the eighth floor, the first thing I noticed was the scent of magnolias — and that was a good fifty yards from the auditorium entrance. Just being among all those living plants felt good — no doubt it was the oxygen they provided — but looking at them was also a treat.
Without further ado, here is a small taste of the show:
So what’s keeping you sane these crazy days?

About Firedoglake
And Sea Salt by the Minnehaha Falls has reopened for the summer season, so ride your bike on over and watch the flood stage river cascade over the falls while sipping an ice cold Furious! It is finally SPRING!
Beautiful. My roses are blooming today.
Man! That’s beautiful.
I wanna go!
I remember, in college, after a hard, Kansas winter, I’d go up to the park in the university and just lie under the Forsythias ( they must have been 50 years old). there I’d lie, soaking up the yellow for an hour or so.
It worked wonders for coming out of the winter’s blues.
I adore flowers and plants; to me, they are absolute avatars of the spiritual quest we are all on ( whether we know it or not)
Thanks!
They put out a lot of “energy”.
Oh, PW – I looked at the top photo and thought this was a trip to the Philadelphia flower show – same sort of over the top stuff. Today’s sanity work? Well, I helped the DH trim our apple tree; we also had a visit from the person who is going to help us move all the bushes and plants so that the septic system guy can come and put in the aeration unit which is replacing the ‘on its last legs’ sand filter behind and above the house (a definite bad news/good news story since we were anticipating that the county health dept. would tell us that we had to replace the sand filter with…another sand filter – luckily they are considered not acceptable technology but aeration units now ARE, which means that they can put the damn thing in the front yard so we no longer need a pump station, the biggest septic pump made, an alarm system in the house and so on). Mostly, once it warms up a little bit, I’ll go out and do some work in the garden – soil temps are only up to 43 here so it’s not warm enough to plant seeds yet but I can dig up and move around some perennials.
There’s a drift of snow lingering in front of the cabin, clouds are heavy, hanging low, the lake still frozen solid. But the pair of swans are flying overhead and the Canada geese are grumbling from the wide spot in the river nearby. Dreamin’ Minnesota dreams…the state that gave us Daytons…and still does.
Huzzah!
They’re perfect, IMO. they take in water,CO2 and nutrients from the soil and give out oxygen to enable others to live. Then, they burst forth in ecstatic blooms which must be a spiritual, as well as sexual, experience for them.
On some plants, every bloom is different and I use these to point out to people I mentor how each spiritual; experience is different, and addresses some level of growth.
I think we can learn a lot from watching plants and what they do.
My garden is becoming more and more a place to which I retreat for escaping the madness that is called society these days.
So wonderful to focus on beauty and life instead of the relentless drumbeat of death and war.
Thank you so much for this.
(BTW, one of my Gene Boerner rosebushes has almost four dozen roses …on one bush alone!)
Beautifully said.
When I was child, I was given a seed packet each year to grow my own little “garden”. I don’t know if parents or grandparents do that anymore, but it is a wonderful learning tool.
And if the seeds are for vegetables, hey, you can actually eat the bounty!
Damn flowers. They’re tryin’ to take over! We must not allow a flower gap!
Heh…
Morning PW & Firepups.
Heh! Was at Sea Salt yesterday and had a glass of Surly Furious. Not sure if it’s that great of a match with fish — will probably go with a lager or wheat beer next time — but it is delicious on its own.
‘Mornin!
Ooooh! Nice! We want pics!
PW,I would love to accomodate you,but a techie I’m not!LOL.
(But I had Mr. G. take a photo on his cellphone, but he’s gone out of town this A.M.)
I’m probably going to go out and work two of the three soil containers on my deck so I’m ready when it comes time to planting my tomato seedlings outside (heh!).
Been battling some trolls over at HuffPo, thus suffering severe finger sprains. I am becoming convinced that paid troll plants are a reality and, in fact, a nascent threat. That movement needs to be throttled in the crib.
Ah, lovely.
Not sure I have been staying sane this week, but flower pix sure help. They are wonderful, PW.
Love the second one – those are some of my favorite colors.
It is spring here, so that helps. But it’s been a bad, bad week – so sleepy now I’m gonna have to go back to bed. Anger keeps one awake.
Thanks for the pretty pictures.
Troll plants grow like weeds.s/
As was I! Perhaps someday we will know what each other looks like in order to say hello! Mad Dog and Prairie Sunshine seem to be from around here also. I wonder how many more?
Absolutely beautiful flowers captured in great photos.
I like your report; must have been a very good show to attend. Just the thing for a Saturday!
