A short time ago few knew, even in Wisconsin, who Joanne Kloppenburg was when she was running against long-time Republican Pol David Prosser to unseat the latter in what can only be called an off-month off-year election. Now she’s known as the “
person who isn’t David Prosser” and involved in an extremely close race. Just what we need in the Midwest, another too close to call election. The preliminary results are
here.
Meanwhile, I do not like to pick blog fights with other blogs, okay, that’s a lie, but I cannot help but notice that the Huffington Post’s coverage of the repression of the working person in Wisconsin and elsewhere has a rather hollow ring to it.
And finally, we have the newly released budget fantasy-fiction of Republican Paul Ryan, aka the “cast grandma out on the ice-shelf policy”. I’m sure you’re shocked to know that Fred Hiatt is intrigued.
Thanks ATTATURK.
The fabulous phred did this work on the Wisconsin Supreme Court race thread which is uber important on the national scene.
phred’s calcuations are based on which precincts lean towards Kloppenborg and which lean towards Prosser/Koch/Walker.
This is why there’s cautious optimism that Kloppenburg will WIN.
This tilts the balance on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. It sets them up to block a lot of the illegality in which Scott Walker routinely engages.
It also means the Koch brothers and others in the top 1% wasted a ton of money on TV advertising in the last few days before the election. The ad revenue was incredible. For a few days, it rivaled the Senate race that Feingold lost in November.
Many thanks to phred, KrisAinCA and many others for their rigorous and prodigious analytical efforts to analyze the demographics of the remaining precincts. Time and time again Prosser would sprint ahead and cooler heads would inform the rest of us that all was not lost.
Most people say a recount is likely, regardless of who wins. Depending on the margin, it might be mandated by the state.
Back in November Scott Walker and the Koch brothers had the Wisconsin Supreme Court, the Governor’s mansion, and majorities in both chambers of the legislature. Five months later, they may have lost the Supreme Court. Vigorous recall efforts could flip the state Senate back to a Dem majority. Efforts to recall Gov. Walker could start next January.
It is impossible imho to overemphasize the importance of Kloppenburg winning.
Just curious, is there anyway this could end up in the US Supreme Court?
Not at this point, that I know of.
Some will win today. People I respect say it’s likely that the margin of whomever wins will be within the margin mandated by state law for a recount. Can’t recall exactly what the percentage is. Then they’ll do a recount and determine a winner.
At that point, if JoAnne won, the GOP might try to fabricate evidence of voter fraud. The Wisconsin GOP has no moral compass. I’m not a lawyer and out of my depth at that point.
Maybe others will have more informed opinions.
No moral compass is the part that worries me. Lots of money buys lots of nifty influence, rules, and laws. Thanks.
Jean,
Some info from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
Supreme Court race still too close to call, Prosser has narrow lead
Agreed, the recount and challenges will be a worry, as the wingnuts in WI have already showed that Rule of Law and constitutional issues are in the quaint old piece of paper realm of their moral non-compass.
Good morning and perfect,
This sure does focus on black box voting, maybe that will be overcome soon.
I just don’t get how the taliban republicans pull out all the close races.
Your body can’t register republican if it has a moral compass, just can’t happen.
Look for some dicey maneuver, enacted in the dead of night, to put Prosser over the top. We all know the Republican MO.
Not being from Wisconsin, and getting my news about this election from this and other liberal sites, my sense of the politics in that state is very biased, but in that state of ignorance, what strikes me about the closeness of the election is how well the Thugs are in getting out their base. Given what seems to be the association between Prosser and Walker, and the huge enthusiasm generated on the Left, I would have thought Kloppenberg would have won by a fair margin. Our vote is up, but so is there’s.
If I’m right, there’s a lesson in this. Just as we can ramp up our game, so the Thugs can ramp theirs up, I suppose through the churches, though this is just speculation. It would be interesting to see the voter participation rates in the rural and small-town precincts to see how well they did in getting out their vote.
A final observation: If I am correct in this, then it seems to me that we are effectively in a state of civil war, without guns and without territorial boundaries. The sooner we admit this to ourselves, the sooner we can come up with a strategy to do better in it. The Republicans have seen this as a civil war for a generation, and are good at it.
it also demonstrates the power of advertising lies and distortions. its too bad all ads don’t need to go thru a clearing house and if their substance is blatently false they are not allowed air time.
Good morning, pups. The Moustache of Wisdom is off today, so MoDo has the stage all to herself, and it’s all about her. In “Hunting Birds of Paradise” she says Bill Cunningham scampers after beauty while Charlie Sheen hawks ugliness. It’s an extremely clumsy hook, and a great excuse to tell stories about herself…
Here she is.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got a variety of bagels with cream cheese. It’s almost time for me to leave for work, so I’m off to get organized (as if…!) Have a great day.
Wisconsin was one of the bastions of the Bund Movement in the 1930′s. There are strong fascist sympathies in large swaths of the electorates DNA.
In the words of
Michael CorleoneKarl Rove,“if history has taught us anything – it’s that you can
kill *anybody*steal *any* election.has nat weighed in on who’s gonna win this election?
‘good at it’
If making the world safe for lying about reality is “Good” – then the public doesn’t count and democracy is not a viable system. So for now, I think you’re wrong about that.
Obama received about 200,000 more votes in 2008 than were cast last night.
1 677 211 Obama, 2008
2 983 417 Prez, 2008
1 465 563 last night, 34 precincts, of 3630 total, not counted
turnout last night was less than 50% of Prez turnout
I see the Dems returned and Walker’s budget was passed. Did Walker succeed in selling the Public Utilities to private corps.?
There are 12 precincts missing in Milwaukee County, for Sup Ct. Kloppenburg has 57% of the vote that’s been counted in Milwaukee Co. Abele, the winner for county executive in Milwaukee Co., has 63% of the vote with 100% counted. If Kloppenburg had 63% in Milwaukee Co., she would have 13,000 more and Prosser would have 13,000 less.
Prosser.
Money talks bullshit runs a marathon. Evils tends prevail in America. How could an election with a such a retched man like Posser be so close? America is truly a nation friggin idiots.
I agree. If Pres. Obama were at the top of the ticket….JoAnne Kloppenburg would of won the supreme court set handily. Keep in mind Democrats tend to win recounts.
Fred Hiatt is incompetent! (I edited myself when I wrote that.)
I’ve stopped reading the Huffington Post. Arianna has shown her true colors.
