Health Care Law as Popular as a Pepperoni and Broken Glass Pizza |
| By: Jon Walker Friday March 11, 2011 3:25 pm |
The reality is that only a few of Affordable Care Act specifics have popular support, like guaranteed issue, Medicaid expansion, subsidies to buy insurance, and allowing children up to 26 to stay on their parents’ plan. But equally important is that some parts of the law are extremely unpopular, such as the individual mandate and the excise tax on employer-provided insurance.

In a 21-page opinion, US Magistrate Judge Theresa Buchanan of the Eastern District of Virginia District Court has just granted the United States Department of Justice subpoena demand for records in the WikiLeaks investigation.
It Takes Al Jazeera to Report on BP Oil Spill Sickness |
| By: David Dayen Friday March 11, 2011 2:00 pm |
I’ve heard the American media described accurately at a bunch of 7 year-olds at a youth soccer game. There’s nothing strategic about the game; all the kids chase the soccer ball in a pack. I thought of that when I read a story about enduring sickness in the Gulf of Mexico. It didn’t come from ABC, or NBC, or CBS, or Fox News, or CNN, or any local outlet. It came from Al Jazeera.
The Logical Consequence of Looting in Libya |
| By: emptywheel Friday March 11, 2011 1:10 pm |
We watched as one man everyone knew to be brutally crazy stole his country’s riches and put them aside for the moment when he would need them. Having watched him do so, we are now limited in the means by which we can pressure him.

Obama Sides with Pentagon over State’s Crowley, Says Manning Treatment Meets “Basic Standards” |

Not only won’t Obama close Gitmo, but he’s willing to rubber stamp the standards introduced there for use on American soil.
House GOP Budget Cuts Funding for Tsunami Monitoring |
| By: David Dayen Friday March 11, 2011 10:03 am |
I’m reminded of Bobby Jindal scoffing in his response to the State of the Union in 2009 at money to be spent on “volcano monitoring,” when not but a few weeks later a massive volcano erupted in Alaska. Silly as it may seem, the government has a role to play in actually preparing for contingencies to protect its people. And traditionally, the US government has played a role in providing humanitarian and disaster relief to allies harmed by natural disasters. There are major cuts in those areas as well.
What Will Washington Do When Saudis Quash Democracy Demonstrations? |
| By: Siun Friday March 11, 2011 9:14 am |
While we hear that Secretary of State Clinton is heading to Egypt and will meet with Libyan opposition leaders and Obama and his advisors consider how to respond to Gadaffi’s massacres, we’ve seen no support for the legitimate demands of people in Bahrain and Iraq. Now with people in the streets of Saudi Arabia, it’s likely that silence will only deepen.
