In Wisconsin, Recalls Now Taking Center Stage

By: David Dayen Monday March 14, 2011 1:15 pm

Over 100,000 people again protested in Madison on Saturday and welcomed the Fab 14 Democratic Senators back. Protests in smaller parts of Wisconsin grew in size as well – one in Washburn, timed with an appearance by Gov. Walker, doubled the total size of the town. Legal challenges to the bill and the process by which it was passed have only begun; the next hearing in Dane County Court is on Wednesday.

And then we have the upcoming elections and recalls. . . .

Nuclear Industry: Pay No Attention to the Potential Meltdown Behind the Curtain

By: David Dayen Monday March 14, 2011 11:45 am

Officials at Fukushima Daiichi concede that they will have to release radioactive steam for as long as a year as a result of the operations failure at the plant, and that the 200,000 evacuated may not be able to return for years to their homes. It’s not that this wasn’t a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami. It’s that, when such events strike, the long-lasting effects for nuclear plants that fail are far greater than other energy sources. And the PR machine can’t spin their way out of that.

Japan Nuclear Watch, Midday Update: Three Reactors in Partial Meltdown

By: Bill Egnor Monday March 14, 2011 9:45 am

Things continue to develop at the Daiichi and Daini nuclear power stations in Japan today. As you have already heard, a second reactor building exploded at Daiichi, it was the Unit 3 which had been experiencing the same problems as Unit 1, which also exploded.

What is believed to have happened is that hydrogen gas which was released along with the steam to reduce the pressure in the reactor vessel built up in the generation building and then a random spark ignited it. The building is seen to have the same kinds of damage that the Unit 1 building had.

FDL Membership: The Value of the Firedoglake Legal Team

There is friendship and camaraderie here at FDL, without question; but, let’s face it, the real draw is the quality content. The quality of content was always superb; but it has grown, over the years, to be truly breathtaking across the board.

Japanese Nuclear Power Company TEPCO Has Scandal-Plagued Past

By: Jim White Monday March 14, 2011 8:35 am

TEPCO, (Tokyo Electric Power Company) which operates the failing nuclear power plants at Fukushima, has a history of scandals associated with its nuclear power operations. In 2002, one set of such scandals became so severe that the president, vice president and chairman of the company all resigned in disgrace. Most disturbing in this regard is that the scandal related to TEPCO hiding evidence of cracks in the containment vessels of their nuclear reactors. Also possibly related to the current crisis is one report I have found of Toshiba providing faulty gauges that are used in monitoring the reactor coolant systems.

Anonymous Emails Charge Bank of America with Forced-Place Insurance Scam

By: David Dayen Monday March 14, 2011 7:59 am

Forced-place insurance is this: when a homeowner doesn’t pay for homeowner’s insurance for their mortgage, the loan servicer must step in to buy an insurance policy for the homeowner. This policy is supposed to be of comparable worth, but in this scheme, the servicer will purchase insurance for the homeowner that costs ten times as much or more, get a kickback from the insurance company for buying such an expensive policy, and then charge the investors or even the homeowner for the insurance. And the servicer usually reinsures the insurance, which means this expensive policy will never face a claim.
