CBS News has released a new poll and, not surprisingly, with official unemployment around nine percent, it found that an overwhelming 51 percent of Americans said jobs/economy is the most important problem facing the country. By comparison, the national debt comes in second with a mere seven percent of Americans saying it is the most important problem, followed by health care with five percent.

US Passes Command of Libya to NATO as Questions Arise About Benghazi Rescue |
| By: David Dayen Wednesday March 23, 2011 7:05 am |
Under the terms of the deal, NATO would manage the no-fly zone, while political oversight of the mission would be outsourced to a separate body made up of members of the coalition, including Qatar and the UAE. But I don’t think this gets the US out of the lead role, necessarily. NATO member states will still command the mission. In fact, US supreme allied commander in Europe, Admiral James Stavridis, would be the likely candidate to run it. Furthermore, all 28 NATO members would have to agree to take command, and that degree of unanimity does not yet exist.
Elizabeth Taylor, Actress, Aids Activist, Dead at 79 |

No, it is not typical to cover breaking news on celebrity deaths here at FDL, but this deserves notice. Yes, Taylor was a giant of the silver screen, but it should also be noted that she lent her fame to AIDS activism before most politicians even knew what it was.

NEA, NAACP Swallow Bankers’ Line on Swipe Fees |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday March 22, 2011 5:28 pm |
The amendment to the Dodd-Frank legislation reducing the cost of interchange fees for debit and credit cards passed with a supermajority in the Senate. It went through the normal process and it won. Now the banks, in a slightly stronger position than during the Dodd-Frank debate, are trying to get the changes delayed, and effectively killed. They’re using a silly argument that this will result in higher costs for consumers. They have the ability to control those costs.
Gov. Snyder Losing Michigan, and Voters Want to Support Collective Bargaining |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday March 22, 2011 4:52 pm |
Add Rick Snyder to the list of Republican governors who over-read their mandate and now find themselves quickly unpopular. First it was Scott Walker in Wisconsin, then John Kasich in Ohio. Now Snyder, whose budget includes large corporate tax cuts while increases in taxes for the working poor, and who pushed through a strengthened set of laws for emergency financial managers, who would be allowed to void union contracts and even fire elected officials, sees his ideas get the thumbs-down from his constituents.
