Army Specialist Morlock Pleads Guilty to Murdering Afghan Civilians for Sport

By: David Dayen Wednesday March 23, 2011 4:12 pm

Jeremy Morlock, part of the Army Stryker “kill team” in Afghanistan, plead guilty today to killing three Afghan civilians in an Army court-martial case. Photos of Morlock and his colleagues posing with Afghan corpses were published in the German magazine Der Spiegel this week, stirring controversy about abuse, torture and defilement carried out by enlisted men and women during the occupation.

FBI Contractor Psychiatrist: Stalkers Are Likely Anthrax-Toting Bioterrorists

By: emptywheel Wednesday March 23, 2011 3:30 pm

The FBI has linked to a redacted executive summary of the report some shrink contractors did on Bruce Ivins. While it is just the executive summary and even that is partly redacted, the report basically paints Bruce Ivins was a stalker which therefore makes him a possible bioterrorist.

Unfortunately for the shrinks who did the report, they start by endorsing the FBI’s now questionable anthrax theory.

Neocon Maximalists Call for Ground Presence in Libya

So, what happens to a no-fly zone when the opposition has no ability to fly?

Gov. LePage Orders Removal of Labor Mural from Maine Department of Labor

By: Michael Whitney Wednesday March 23, 2011 2:05 pm

It ain’t John Ashcroft ordering the coverup of Lady Justice’s bare breast, but it’s close. The Tea Party-backed Governor of Maine, Paul LePage, has ordered his state’s Department of Labor to remove a mural depicting moments in labor history from its walls. LePage also demanded the state rename the Labor Department’s conference rooms, currently honoring labor icons like Frances Perkins and Cesar Chavez.

The Affordable Care Act at 1: Little Has Changed

By: David Dayen Wednesday March 23, 2011 1:19 pm

On this day last year, the Affordable Care Act was signed into law. Even after a year of debate, most people in the country weren’t entirely sure what became law on that day. And that remains the case.

AT&T Confident Its Partner in Crime Will Let It Take Over T-Mobile

By: emptywheel Wednesday March 23, 2011 12:30 pm

AT&T and the government have become so closely entwined in their joint program spying on Americans that the government cannot be said to be an independent reviewer of AT&T’s business.

Saudi Arabia Abandons Yemen’s Saleh, Calls for Transition

By: David Dayen Wednesday March 23, 2011 11:45 am

Riyadh has propped up Saleh in the past, even after he supported Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait. But they have also kept close contacts with the Yemeni military. I imagine their preferred outcome is a military coup.

How Benjamin Netanyahu Sees America

By: Blue Texan Wednesday March 23, 2011 10:30 am

It’s a given that Republican candidates for president must visit Israel and kiss Benjamin Netanyahu’s ring. Willard did it, so has Huck — who called Bebe “one of the world’s great leaders” — as has The Quitter just this week. And they always heap praise on the far-right Israeli Prime Minister, and sometimes take swipes at Obama. And who is this man they’re siding with over their own country?

Eight Years Ago Today, KSM Was Probably Being Waterboarded for 179th Time

By: emptywheel Wednesday March 23, 2011 9:30 am

It seems to me we’re never going to see that report until after the eight-year statute of limitations on torture expire for everything described in the report that clearly exceeded John Yoo’s expansive interpretation of what constitutes torture.

Japan: Tap Water in Tokyo Too Radioactive for Infants

By: David Dayen Wednesday March 23, 2011 8:40 am

This is the first time I’ve seen Japanese officials admit that any radiation existed above recommended levels, if only for infants. Older children and adults are supposedly OK. In fact, they’re still trying to say that any water consumed prior to this point by babies is fine. But they are cautioning against it now because of the presence of cancer-causing radioactive iodine. And that’s in Tokyo – 150 miles from Fukushima.
