TEPCO plans to spray resin on the ground around the plant to keep radioactive particles from spreading or seeping into the ocean. The company will test the method Thursday in one section of the plant before using it elsewhere, Nishiyama said.

“The idea is to glue them to the ground,” he said. But it would be too sticky to use inside buildings or on sensitive equipment.

I don’t know if I should laugh or cry. Primary dispersal offsite is through the air, not the ground.

At the Rick Santorum link, I also found out from Tea Party favorite Marco Rubio that the national debt is the central economic issue of our time and America faces the very real danger of a catastrophic economic crisis. He also said demagoguery is the last refuge of the spineless. So there.

Marco is raising his profile because this is so serious.

Meanwhile, 30 year Treasury bonds are yielding ~4.54%, 10 year notes are yielding ~3.49%, and 7 year notes are yielding ~2.91%.

Mornin’, BT, pups

From the WaPo Business piece on housing prices:

S&P says a double dip would occur if its 20-city and 10-city indexes fell below their April 2009 lows. The S&P 20-city index is 2.8 percent above that low; the 20-city [10-city?] index is 1.1 percent above it.

Figure in brackets mine.

That’s picking at nits. They’ll manipulate the figures any way they can to avoid saying we’re in a double dip. Newsflash: we’re there already, morons.

Those figures are normally “seasonally adjusted”.

I’m seeing mostly short sales here as well. With the occasional BIG loss. Neighbor took a $30K hit on a $150K house just to get out of it. Somebody got themselves a real deal, as the neighbor get that house three years ago or so for $10K less than was originally paid.

And I live in a good neighborhood.

Don’t you remember a month or so ago, the WH floating the fact that we need to move on from focusing on the recession and unemployment? We need to spin for the next couple of years to get Obama re-elected.

So now we have Libya to worry about, or rather how noble Obama was in putting us in the middle of their civil war. We own it now no matter how much we might try to push it off to NATO, this was Obama’s doing and just like with Iraq, if you break it, you buy it.

Why can’t a single politician be on the side of the people and push the policies that benefit them? Why are they all so slimy that you regret voting for them 10 minutes after you walk out of the voting booth.

Makes me sick.

Me too, BoxTurtle….I live in a nice neighborhood of villas (called “patio homes” in some areas) a couple of miles from Notre Dame, and there have been times over the 7+ years I’ve been here that there have been NO homes for sale in this complex. At the moment there are 7 listings, plus two that aren’t listed but will be soon (deceased owners). A couple have been on the market for more than 3 years, the most recent listing is 6 months old. One (that I know of) is a short sale.

I bought my home at a reasonable price (NOT overpriced) and although I’ve made improvements, I won’t be able to sell for even what I paid, much less cover the cost of the improvements.

There’s a difference between creating an “other” (what the rich have done because they just aren’t rich enough and need more money) and describing a situation created by others (what KO has done because, well, the rich have created this situation in order to steal from the American people).

Disturbing and sad. And people with the means to purchase aren’t going to want to buy in a neighborhood with lots of vacant homes, so it’s a self-perpetuating problem with no obvious end in sight. Even if the economy picks up, how quickly will the glut of homes for sale be reduced?

The salon where I get hair services has been in business at the same location for 16 years. The economy has taken its toll, and the owner was having trouble making mortgage payments that were no problem when business was good. She tried repeatedly to get the bank to work with her, and they refused. So she is simply walking away from it, moving to a smaller place in a strip mall with rent a fraction of her mortgage payment. The bank simply would not help, even though she had been a good customer who always paid on time.

Dead right. Consumer confidence took a deep dive last month. This is what happens when you have 10-odd percent of people out of work and looking, and another 5 percent who have just given up working. And suppose people actually start to believe that their SS is going to be cut in the future? What would they do? Save like crazy. We are in another home-grown downward spiral. It’s hard to fight an economic depression when you’ve got both hands tied behind your back.

I’ve been house-hunting in SoCal, and there’s LOTS of short-sales going on. Some of the houses are worth consideration, but many are huge dumps bc the owners clearly never really took care of them. One house I saw would’ve been really great except it would take at least $100K to bring it up to code. The bank wants waaaaay more than it’s worth.

Sad to say that the owner bought this house 20 years ago for a very low price. Then re-fi’ed for $600k some years ago back in the boom & spent that on??? who knows? Certainly didn’t spend it on the house, and that’s for sure.

Great research by the author, CNN Associate Producer Gabriella Schwarz. Since when it is a given that Social Security is “failing”? Sez who – oh, I guess the genius, Rick Santorum said so, so, you know – if a stupid right-wing mofo says it’s failing, well, who is CNN to question it? At least put it in quotation marks.

In response to BGPelaire @ 92

But believe me, Santorum fans bow and adulate at his feet and agree with his every dulcet “pearl” of stupidity & irresponible lies… more’s the pity. So whyever should CNN, you know, “act” like a *responsible* real-news organization and, eh I dunno, do some research (too expensive for the corporation to “waste” their $$$ on useless stuff like research) or behave like real journalists and put Frothy Mixture’s bloviating lies in “quotes.”
