One of my least favorite genres of Beltway reporting is the “If only Political Party A could message Policy X better, voters would like them” piece, and we see a good example of it from Cillizza in today’s Washington Post.
Former Florida governor Jeb Bush argued that there is no simple solution to reversing the GOP’s fortunes among Hispanics.
“Republicans need to make a better effort at connecting with Hispanic voters,” he said. “The more connected Hispanics feel to the Republican community, the more likely they are to turn out in support of Republicans on Election Day.”
It’s true that proposing immigrants be killed like wild animals, comparing them to vermin, spewing nonsense about “terrorist anchor babies” and phantom Mexican beheadings — all while blaming them for everything from unemployment to leprosy isn’t great messaging if you’re trying to “connect” with Hispanic voters.
But the GOP’s main problem with Hispanics is that it favors policies that hurt Hispanics.
Republicans overwhelmingly support Gov. Jan Brewer’s Draconian measures in Arizona. They overwhelmingly support denying health care and education to immigrants and children of immigrants, English-only laws and amending the Constitution to eliminate birth-right citizenship. And in a stark departure from Ronald Reagan, they even oppose a path to legal citizenship for immigrants who already here. (Not to mention their opposition to affirmative action, their disdain for the social safety net, etc., etc.)
It’s hard to imagine that they’ll be able to “connect” with Hispanic voters as long as that remains the case.

morans can’t spell!
they left out the “r” in “excretions”.
Jeb Bush and all of his supporters can kiss my ass in the county square at high noon.
Yeah do they think us Mexicans are stoopid?
Well Meg Whitman certainly did and so did the campaign manager who made enough to retire from her pitiful campaign. That is always a winning message “Get out of OUR schools and go clean my toilets.”
Her?
I’d pay to see that.
I think him.
707 !
‘zup ‘dog !
Pretty easy to see where Jeb stands: Don’t change the policy, just the rhetoric.
I’d volunteer to enforce it.
A terrorist department store mannequin. That’s some scary shit.
Man, I’ll bet she’s a lotta fun to be around. Not.
hey! ‘zup is that my NCAA bracket is completely busted. serves me right for knowing nothing about college hoops…
Yeah, I just love that word, “connecting.”
707!!11!!1
I saw a tweeter (from cbl yesterday, I believe) that said out of the 5.9 million brackets submitted to ESPN only 2 had the final four correct.
I’m sorry. You folks have it all wrong.
The U.S. is an empire. Empires create their own reality.
The message is EVERYTHING.
Policies don’t matter at all.
/s
puke thinktank strategy session:
“ok, how can we better pitch the message ‘we hate you, we want you dead’”
“how bout abortion n gheyz n muslims?”
“nah they’re not stupid old rush t-baggers”
“well .. shit .. “
You’re right. Obama has proved this beyond any doubt. He’s raping the middle- and lower-classes, yet most of them will still turn out to vote him into another term. President ThankYouSirMayIHaveAnother will get millions of ThankYouSirMayIHaveAnother votes.
Unfortunately no snark is sufficient to capture the corruption favoring the rich & corps in the U.S.
Pro-business means anti-worker and screw-the-consumer.
Pro-worker does not mean anti-business.
We need to ask endlessly. If you are pro-business does that mean you are anti-worker?
I don’t know anyone who is anti-business. We all buy their stuff every day.
I do know of businesses that are anti-worker, and businesses who have contempt for their customers (The Banks, Airlines, for example.)
The R’s are not just “Anti (Brown) Immigrant”, they are all pro-business (see the first line).
probably a VCU and a Butler alum!
She must be one with that looker…
Sheesh, had to fix another for ya.
Yeah, I heard the ESPN talking heads say that this morning. I got one correct in the FF, but it was the most important one of all (Go Big Blue!)
It may be one of your least favorite games, but it’s sure worked for Obama. Remember “hope” and “change”? Remember anything Obama campaigned on? Remember his first two years as President, when he controlled the Senate AND the House? What immigration policy did Obama push forward when he could have enacted it?
Obama blew the greatest opportunity our country has had in 30 years to right terrible wrongs. He promised to reverse policies that will shape the lives of generations to come. What has he done? He’s treated ALL working class Americans, especuially Democrats, with disdain since day one in office. Obama is a disgrace, arguably the worst President of our lifetime.
Yet your focus is on bashing Republicans.
Yet your focus is on bashing Republicans.
“You shouldn’t be writing about anything but Obama” — another of my least favorite genres.
It’s not Obama coming up with these ideas, it’s the Regressives. Obama just says okay. He’s a neoliberal like the Regressives. Their think tanks are the ones calling the shots.
Jeb has a Mexican wife is he going to try and sell himself to the GOP for President as someone who can take Hispanic voters away from the democrats?
Yep, it’s yet another Content Concern Troll. You seem to get more than your fair share of those.
I’m sorry but Friday afternoon the Republicans in Wisconsin violated a court order and published a law that there was a restraining order in place against and so far today, I’ve heard crickets. What’s up with that? Anybody know?
We can attack Obama when he is wrong and the GOP when they are wrong I don’t see BT playing favorites.
When we can I like that we try and come up with better solutions to problems than Obama and the GOp does.
hope you saw my condolences about your furry baby…gonna donate yummy kibble to the shelter in her name,i gotta tortie too
Bill in the diaries had something on that it sounds to me like Gov Walker is in Contempt of court. I hope he goes to County and gets a nice Orange Jumper.
I’ve noticed that as well. I think it’s the “Texan” part of his pseudonym. I’ll bet if he’d called himself “Blue Escarpment” for example, he wouldn’t get nearly so many of them.
Another Mexican at the Lake? Cool!
empty out corporate DC
we can start again
Not much, no. Not that it matters–the judge isn’t going to issue his contempt citations based on the media coverage.
then all the cliff dweller trolls would show up
Trolls seem to show up for specific topics or when they think what ever we are doing is actually working. BT should be proud he attracts so many trolls when your enemy thinks your effective that is a compliment.
I did see that. Thank you, for that and the donation.
I think it’s the snarkyness of so many of his posts. The moran trolls can’t tell the difference and get all woodied up an’ shit.
Yeah, of course I don’t expect that but I would have thought that there would be some news about it. The unions filing a complaint for example.
she was a beauty…and torties are the smartest cats…imo
Well personally I think Bailey’sBlog has a nice ring to it. I wouldn’t go there but bailey2739 would never have cause to gripe about the content.
Jeb expects the GOP to lose this election his plan seems to be to lay the groundwork of blaming the GOP’s defeat on the GOP’s Hispanic voter problem and of course offer himself up as the solution.
That pic still kills me.
I’m really not surprised. The media showed their colors a long time ago.
It’s a goodie. I love it when evil devours itself.
jebs a big fat pussbag…
Or coolio! Wait! Just joshing! Pardon.
Back to work.
Namaste
could of been worse coulda said excretions
He’s a Bush. What else need be said?
He would if we showed up.
The problem for Jeb is the GOP is racist they won’t abandon racism just because they lose an election Glen Beck, Lou Dobbs have been spreading hate for years even if they both went off the air now the GOP’s Reputation for racism will still be there.
The Border Patrol Militias control the Tea Baggers in the border states. How can Jeb ever hope to win GOP Primaries without Texas and AZ?
707! That much is certain.
Agreed but I am sure he wants to run for President.
Its Cool
Been a while since I haven’t had a tortie. Like havin’ a tortie and a calico at the core of the colony.
If I ever get employed again, I want to get Neko a companion. I was thinking of a tortie.
iIf my choice was was Jeb or “Clarence Thomas” Obama, I’d campaign, fundraise & vote for Jeb. Why should any Democrat WE elect honor their promises to us if they know we’ll vote for them regardless?
That’s a false dichotomy. There are other options than Democrat or Republican. Since there is no real difference between the parties anymore, rewarding the Republicans in order to say “fuck you” to the Vichycrats is merely perpetuating the very system which you claim to deplore.
I’d go third party before I’d vote for Jeb.
Gods, the sociopathology of that environment growing up…
Yep. Prescott as a grandpa and Babs as the mother? Not hard to see why they are like they are.
Sensitive, huh? Did I say you should only write about Obama? How about writing about the Democratic Senate we elected to help Obama enact his policies to effect “hope” & “change”? Remember, the ones who gave us our wonderful much needed HCR?
Illegal Alien or Immigrant? I think a lot of immigrants feel there’s a difference.
If only the Dem majority in the Senate for Obama’s 1st two years reasoned as you do!
Well, Jeb, if your party wasn’t constantly telling Hispanics to get out of the country, maybe they’d pay more attention to what Repubs are saying.
You running for something? You’ve got my vote!
See BT? Bailey2739 isn’t demanding that you just write about how shitty Obama is. Writing about how shitty any Democrat, individually or collectively is is okay. What are you going to do with your new found literary latitude?
It’s always nice to see a Content Concern Troll keep an open mind.
707!1!
I’m sure glad someone gave BT permission to write about stuff. That’s wonderful! I’m sure He’s beside himself with excitement.
That’s a tough one & obviously a preference. BUT, I sure wouldn’t waste my vote if it might get “Clarence Thomas” Obama a return trip!
Not after they get harassed for being Brown by the locals and or the cops. I knew some Salvadorans who got angry about being called Mexican until they they realized that it didn’t matter what they were they spoke Spanish and were Brown thats all that mattered.
You’re pretty much on the mark. WE put them in office & look what they’ve done to us? If this is what they planned to do, why didn’t they campaign on it? Come to think of it, next time they run they probably will – they know they’ve got your vote!
What is the waste of a vote a vote for a third party is a vote that Obama is not getting given the economy Obama needs every vote he can get no President has ever been reelected with real unemployment numbers this high.
Granted Jeb is a weak candidate as is all the GOPers running for President right now but if they can’t beat Obama without my help in this economy…well that says something about their fitness for office right there.
Absolutely mistaken as you would know if you paid as much attention to other commentators as you do to your own inflated opinion of yourself.
I thinks its better to tank one election to show the Dems we do mean business than support Obama or the GOP. Plus given the economy, wars in the middle east, Japanese nuclear problems the time is ripe for a third party.
BT used Immigrant above when the story was clearly about Illegal Aliens. And now TCU says there’s no difference.
Probabln not a “Hispanic Problem”, just messaging.
Large portions of the Lake have been critical of Obama since he sold us out on healthcare. I can’t speak for Margaret how she votes is her deal. But many of us have been talking third party for months now.
None of us have ever considered voting for Jeb. There is no way you can persuade anyone here to vote for Jeb especially the Hispanics at the Lake.
I would be interested in seeing an FDL poll of who would we vote for if we had to vote for a GOPer. I would like to see the results broken down by race, religion or lack of, age, gender, economic class and education.
Also who do we think is the easiest GOPer to beat and why. Plus who is the most dangerous GOPer and most dangerous because they can get elected GOPer.
Sometimes I think you do it on purpose, other times I just don’t think you can keep up… The Repugs don’t want votes from undocumented immigrants, illegal immigrants, or illegal aliens – they want votes from registered Hispanic immigrants and their descendants. But, those are the folks, the legal and naturalized immigrants, who are treated poorly because they speak Spanish and are Brown.
No, he didn’t. Certainly not in the post you claim to be replying to. Is it too much for you to represent what others say honestly?
The only messaging problem around here is yours.
For practical purposes living in America there is no difference. The anti Immigrant crowd does not want any immigrants coming to the country legal or illegal Alan1tx the anti immigrant guys think we the legal and illegal are all taking their jobs.
So I think BT is right with his word choice.
Thanks:)
I think it’s telling when people use the term “illegal alien” to describe people who have a tacit invitation to work here for low wages and no benefits by corporate America.
Obviously he did. And restated it in #84.
Anything you’d like to say?
Are you working for Jeb or Karl Rove I’m just curious if messaging is what they think the problem is then all the hate crimes done to Hispanics because of the messaging you send us. You really think won’t cost you any Hispanic votes?
(smacks hand on forehead rolls eyes)
David Dayen has a fresh cross-post available: Polling Shows Tight Race for Wisconsin State Supreme Court
Don’t mention it. ;-)
Jeb Bush won’t run since he knows that 2 of 3 white voters won’t vote for Obama, and Bush, can’t get 2 of 3 “racial and ethnics” to vote for him. Thus, Bush’s candidacy is doomed from the get-go.
So, who in the Republican Party will become the nominee, and subsequently, dooming the Republican Party for the foreseeable future?
And here in Arizona, my youngest daughter turns 18 next year, and is one of 43& of all Hispanic kids un 19 years of age. Thus, next year, over 50,000 Hispanic kids will be voting in a presidential election. And as this applies to Arizona, in four years and when McCain’s seat becomes vacant, a Democrat will have a “lock” on McCain’s seat. As such, “democratic” Destiny, writ large.

Oops, here comes the Grammar Police. :-)

Anything you’d like to say?
Yes the GOP has a Hispanic problem as I stated because the GOP’s anti immigrant hate speech affects every Brown person and Spanish speaker.
The GOP can’t fix this by pretending that their anti immigrant hate is not Code Words for get all the Hispanics. They can’t pretend that legal Hispanics are not effected by this speech and won’t blame the GOP for it.
Think of it this way after Reagan Lied about Black Chicago Welfare Mom how many African American votes does the GOP get now decades later?
Cool we are out in force today:)
I notice no response from alan to BT@86.
Apparently that did the STFU trick.
I guess it could be irony.
Put up a picture that makes fun of people saying “English is Our Language”, and then misuse the word Immigrant for Illegal Alien.
Too clever by half.
Except they are immigrants – undocumented immigrants but immigrants nevertheless.
Sorry.
The only time I use “illegal alien” is to describe:
1. a foreigner who has entered or resides in a country unlawfully or without the country’s authorization.
2. a foreigner who enters the U.S. without an entry or immigrant visa, especially a person who crosses the border by avoiding inspection or who overstays the period of time allowed as a visitor, tourist, or businessperson.
It doesn’t matter if they’re working or not. It doesn’t matter who invites them or if that invitation is explicit or tacit. It doesn’t matter if their wages are low or high or if they have benefits.
It’s a term with a definition that BT either misused, in describing the article above, or worse.
Hmmm. Well, here’s my thinking: we are presented with a choice of rewarding either a bad Rethug candidate or a disingenuous, insincere, lying Dino candidate. Third parties will never make the cut. I’ve seen other elections that went sideways (Gore vs Bush; Bush vs Kerry wherein Kerry got smeared and shellacked and wasn’t considered good enough for the support of all Dems, and Indy’s apparently believed the election year lies the Rethugs spread (swiftboating, sailing, etc.) and that strategy of teaching the Dems a lesson didn’t end well. Either way, we got nothing but bad choices ahead as far as I can see. If there’s a candidate out there with potential, if someone could please point me at them, I’d sure appreciate it.
You could make the argument, as BT did, that since our country is run by the corporations (through proxy politicians) that hire these illegal aliens, and these corporations employee these folks at substandard wages with impunity, there is an understanding that it’s okay to come here, just don’t get caught.
As long as companies continue to employee illegal aliens without consequence, illegal aliens will continue to come to the US looking for work. The problem lies not with the people who are seeking a better life but with the corporations who continue to offer it even though it’s illegal, and with the government who continues to allow the said corporations to do so with little or no consequence.
If we’re going to argue about whether or not they’re “immigrants” or “aliens”, you’ve missed the point of the article entirely.
The GOP is not looking for the votes of people who can’t vote. They’re looking for the votes of people who can.
Ah, shucks, I’d like to see what you suggest for Dems candidates. Do we have a Dem candidate waiting in the wings that has what it would take. There are a few I like, but I doubt they’d be acceptable to all, and maybe not even to a majority. But do we actually know who’s on deck? What comes after Obama?
From your mouth to you know who’s ears! Got any ideas who?
Jeb Bush, on bended knee,
Will kiss the ass of Paw-len-tee,
And Paw-len-tee then will try,
To kiss Romney’s ass, nice and high,
And so its been, since ol Nixon,
Jeb Bush will never miss,
The chance for so sublime a kiss.
Kind of like Obama’s economic policy. Unemployment isn’t a substantive problem to him, it’s a political problem. This is what comes of having your politics run by ad men.
Immigrants are immigrants until they stop following immigration law. Then they’re illegal aliens.
They may still have expired documents.
I can’t argue with any of that, including:
I get that way sometimes.
Their plan to connect with hispanic voters is by connecting the hispanic voters fist to their nose.
Holy shit.
Now who is being too clever by half? No matter how much you might holler about it, they are still immigrants. The terms are not mutually exclusive.
And I agree with KrisA as you are missing the point of the post to argue a tangential point
I’m the wrong guy to ask. Just as many voted for Obama because they’d had enough of “Chauncey” Bush, I’ve had MORE than my fill of “Clarence Thomas” Obama. He’s been disastrous for our country at a time when we gravely needed a President to fight for the “hope” & “change” he campaigned on.
I won’t throw away my vote unless he’s sure to lose. If he doesn’t have the honor & gratitude to say “thanks, but I’ve decided not to run”, I’ll campaign, fundraise & vote to return the Presidency to the opposition.
Actually, Terror Anchor Babies is a creation of the very fertile imagination of US Rep. Louis Gohmert of Texas. A classic debate for the Comedy Channel would be a debate between Crazy Louis and Michelle Bachman.

“U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, said terrorists are sending pregnant women to have children on U.S. soil so they can “come back in 20, 25 years” to “blow us up.”
All across America, if one looks deeply into any community, a Great Scribbler can be found, and generally speaking, they tend to reside on the Center-Left. Howerver, here in ARizona, one can be found on the Center-Right, and her name is Linda Valdez.
Her short history was that she was “the” Mexico City Bureau for the Arizona Republic, since she was the only staffer assigned to Mexico. As such, a great advertising stinkbomb, and still recognized. And after working in the “outlier community” (Mexico) she was brought home and assigned to the editorial staff and primary political page with the additional responsiblity to write a column or two of her own choosing and within a reasonable time frame.
Yesterday, being Sunday, she did the Hispanic Community a “favor” at least from my perspective, given that what she writes is already well-known for Hispanics but not for the white folks. To wit, they-white folks, are oblivious, unless its tax cuts and the politics of the extremists, as all this is “entertainment”.
Yesterday’s column and titled, “Legislature now Latino-bashing” can be found at the Arizona Republic, page B-11 and in the section titled Viewpoints. And since I don’t do links, you will have to fend for yourself, to garner a far more even-handed response, given that Jeb Bush, will have to overcome the fact that his wife is a Latina, and which don’t mean much to anyone of the Hispanics here in the Sonoran Desert. And having a “Latina-wife” has been a “novelty” for Bush “to sell” to his simple-minded acolytes. Therefore, what started out as a perceived “respect” necessary to address anti-immigrationists, has for many years, morphed into an expression for Hate and Ignorance by these extremists and perhaps, even moreso, when affiliated with the National Alliance.
Needless to say, this moderate-to-conservative Journalist, is slowly catching up to the rest of us, and whom have known for many, many years, that the Right advocated that the Poor should be “taken out back since they are a burden on society.”

I think they were trying to spell NO EXCEPTIONS !
