From the Guardian’s Japan live blog:

The radiation levels at Fukushima Daiichi are now too high for staff from the Tokyo Electric Power Company, which operates the nuclear power plant, to stay in control rooms there, according to Kyodo news.

Also from the Guardian, the French Nuclear agency has ranked the current situation in Japan:

Japan’s nuclear crisis is equivalent to number six on the INES scale of nuclear accidents, Kyodo news agency has quoted the French Nuclear Agency as saying.

The INES – International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale – ranks incidents from one to seven, with one described as “anomaly” and seven as “major accident”.

Six is described by INES as “serious accident”. The 1986 Chernobyl disaster is the only incident to have been ranked at seven, while the explosion at Kyshtym, Russia, in 1957, is the only incident ever to be ranked as a six.

INES describes level number six as: “Significant release of radioactive material likely to require implementation of planned countermeasures.”

This is unbelievable. I sincerely hope that this crisis is the final straw for the idea of expanded nuclear power in the United States. Japan is a modern country, and this happened to them. It could happen here…

Why hire? I know people who would shoot anything scary and brown just for the entertainment. And they’d provide their own bullets.

But at least the GOPers are finally getting a dose of reality: If you want to stop illegal immigration, you’re going to have to shoot to kill. For anybody else, that would be a show stopper and cause a rethinking of immigration in general. I predict a movement to allow bullets to be tax deductable.

A cynic might also suggest that the GOPers have realized that the major reason for illegal immigration is jobs…which is why they’re busy killing all the jobs they can. No work, no scary brown people.

Boxturtle (I see stupid people. They’re everywhere. They wander around just like us, they don’t even know they’re dumb!)

I suggest closing the prison(s) posthaste and making the place a recreation facility (if that is now possible given its notoriety). I know from past personal experience that the diving, fishing, and beaches were lovely. Granted that would require holding a certain President who shall remain nameless to his word, no mean task, given that individual’s track record.

I apologize for the weak attempt at levity given the terrible situation in Japan, which has kept me up all night. I really think it is exceedingly dire, much worse than we think.

Good Morning folks

All this political stuff doesn’t matter, we are all totally fucked. The radiation leaking from Fukushima is going to poison the oceans and make the sea life inedible to humans.
And the reports coming out of Japan indicate that the problem is getting worse,it’s only a matter of time before a full scale meltdown occurs. This radiation leaking will reach the west coast of the US and could ruin Cali’s agriculture.

Sorry for the morbid comment, but I think we all have to face the inevitable, we are fucked

And is the direct consequence of the nuclear industries policy of shitting on its own doorstep.

Illustrated by no plan to dispose of nuclear waste, other than leaving it for eternity in a pond (which can dry up, then the waste catches fire and kills millions) at a nuclear site.

Maybe more like overcompensation.

I will not sit down. I will not shut up. And, I don’t knit. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Maybe some insecurity? I don’t know. Never would have expected it from some of the names that were involved with that behavior, particularly bmaz.

HAARP

1. Based on those antennae it is not microwave (They use mm length antennae, and yagi or parabolic dish antennae). It is HF. The scale is not shown, but based on the construction of the antennae they something in the 5 to 50 m range ( 20 Mhz to 2 Mhz ).
2. Microwaves are line-of-sight, and are not bounced of the Ionosphere.
3. Good luck getting HF to penetrate the earth. Not going to happen. The earth is a reflector (a Faraday Cage) at those frequencies. Ask any Ham radio licensee.

I call bullshit on your stupid conspiracy theory. Please write about a topic on which you can make informed comments.

I did that too, though Kuroneko had apparently been working on me for a while.

I’m out too. An hour at the gym, a stop at Salvation Army to drop off more stuff, followed by more closet painting.

Everybody try to stay cool. The folks monitoring the Japan stuff had frayed nerves from what they were seeing, reading, and trying to interpret, and I think we should cut them some slack this week.

Not that I liked the comments, but let’s put them in context and stay friendly.

Sounds like a good day….we have such a typical day. Reminds me of school: quite cool in am, will be nicely warm this afternoon; never know what to wear….;) Have a good one.

Morning pups. Jane’s demonstration for Manning yesterday got a notice in the local newspaper via Agence France Presse. His case is getting the kind of international attention it needs to put the heat on the Obama Administration. Thanks to Jane, and everyone else here who is working hard to put this on the front burner.

(*munching cereal*) Nicely warm? Not here yet, but getting regularly into the 40s, which is a sign that spring is coming.

Hey Folks, I gotta go too.
Sorry for the negativity this AM, but this Japan stuff scares the crap outta me.
I’ll just leave it at that and say good bye

Good Bye
