Signs from a 2010 event. Another protest is scheduled for noon eastern time today. (photo: mar is sea Y)
Over the weekend, Barack Obama made his administration virtually indistinguishable from that of George Bush when he fired PJ Crowley for speaking the truth about the conditions of Bradley Manning’s detention. There will be a rally of Manning supporters at the State Department today to protest the treatment of Manning and the firing of Crowley, and a march to the White House.
According to the press release:
Several of the male protesters will be semi-naked and shackled to represent Manning’s humiliation of having his clothing taken from him at night. Others will be dressed orange prison jumpsuits to make the connections between the abuse of Manley and the abusive treatment of prisoners in Guantanamo.
With his firing of Crowley, Obama makes a mockery of his own claim to be a constitutional scholar who supports transparency in government. Moreover, the silence of Democrats like John Kerry — who shrieked wildly over Bush’s firing of General Shinseki when he wanted to score political points for himself, but is now nowhere to be found — reveals them to be little more than unprincipled, self-serving demagogues whose only loyalty is to their own political ambition.
Kerry recently defended the excuse given by sexual sadist Denise Barnes that she is stripping Manning at night and forcing him to stand naked during morning inspection for his own good.
WHEN: Monday, March 14, 2011, 12:00PM – 2:00PM
WHERE: 12:00PM, State Department, 22nd Ave and C St NW, D.C. followed by a march to the White House for a rally at 1:30pm

President Obama, I want my vote back.
I know I’ll never vote for Obama again, this shocks my conscience. It’s likely I’ll have no presidential candidate to vote for in 2012. Pointless? Perhaps. As much as I may disagree with Obama’s policies I could have held my nose and voted for him because he’s better than a Republican. But torture transcends everything and I could never, ever justify voting for someone engaging in or condoning it.
Is there a coherent thought in there somewhere? He’s taken 82 words to say absolutely nothing…with bad grammar.
I wish I lived near enough to participate. Obama ceded his “constitutional scholar” cred a long time ago, beginning with FISA and it hasn’t gotten better since. Only worse.
Sorry I can’t make it but next best thing is to light up the capitol hill switchboard.
I have contact my rep and senators on this matter weekly with a contact person.
I want to see Obama’s law degree and transcripts, as I suspect he obtained his degree via mail order.
I too want to participate but reside just too far away for an unemployed person.
Obama has shirked his duty so many times, and this is the straw that broke a herd of camels.
Let Liberty Ring!
No. Simple answers to simple questions, as we used to say in the old days.
Kucnich should get his butt into gear. He has been given the runaround and is on the Oversight Committee for Pete’s Sake!
I’m telling ya, if the Dems in DC can’t do any better than this, they all need an attitude adjustment.
Yep, sounded Rumsfeldian to me.
Signed and shared. Wish I could be there.
This march will be a success even if just one person makes it, standing up for the rule of law and against torture. Nevertheless, hoping there are many to show their support.
Glenn Greenwald’s tweet is a good poster slogan
CNN says Crowley resigned “under pressure from WH” – detainee abuse is allowed – speaking out against it isn’t.
Black Nixon will never give us Manning just like the TSA will never give up their porno scanners. We are being taught to obey. It’s for our own safety.

Wish I could be there; best to those who go. Keep us posted.
I made the mistake of listening to NPR briefly yesterday. there was a “nooz” commentary about PJ Crowley resigning over his comments about Manning’s detention. However, the “nooz” didn’t include Private Bradley Manning’s name, nor did it say *anything* about how he’s been held for months without a charge, nor did it say *anything* about how he’s being tortured. I had to turn over the radio stat before busting a vein. Creeps.
I haven’t signed the petition that’s circulating to keep funding going for NPR because it’s almost as right wing as FAUX “News” these days. Who cares if it dies? No loss at all.
Well, after all, a Prez is allowed to rely on the work and words from his or predecessor’s Justice Dept. that what was previously considered torture is not torture if we do it or ask other countries to do it for us. No court has found anyone guilty anything for writing that (POS) memo of Yoo and Bybee, et al., so it’s still valid, no? /s
This is one of the few times I wished I lived in my hometown again. Instead of sitting on that little wall with the fence feeding squirrels I’d like to shackle Obama to the fence. And walk away.
Completely agree with you, Margaret. I understand when people say that NPR is one of few/only alternatives in certain swaths of the country, which is ruled by Fox & ClearChannel. I am sorry about that, but I haven’t contributed to NPR/PBS in quite some time bc, to me, they (like Obama) are more insidious than Fox bc far too many citizens still believe that NPR/PBS is more “fair & balanced” than the rest of the media. These days, imo, NPR/PBS is no more “fair & balanced” than Fox, thanks very much.
If NPR/PBS go away: oh well. I’ll miss some of the weekend shows & Masterpiece Theatre, but the “nooz”: not at all. Too disingenuous & lying & perfidious for me.
If only someone would pitch the idea to Obama that going against the grain of the Bush Administration would show Obama is important and powerful. His idea of power is go along [with Republicans] to get along…
I cannot locate the comment thread where I read this, but a commenter pointed out the Crowley’s use of the word “stupid” echoes Obama’s use of the word “stupid” when Obama was criticizing the arrest of his friend Professor Gates for talking back to a police officer, or contempt of cop.
Wouldn’t put it past the State Department to make that diplomatic word play…
America, Fuck Yeah!
Naked guys and orange jumpsuits–brilliant marketing! I hope this gets some TV play.
Isn’t it about the time for the dKos people to start screaming “Leave Obama aloooooone!” I am soooo looking forward to that part of the 2012 election season.
Their credibility is fading as fast as CNN’s and just like CNN, they’re responding to that by becoming even more right wing. Yeah, guys, good idea. Here’s another one: If your house catches on fire, pour gasoline on it…
Kerry and all the fake dems are silent, but Dennis isn’t.
Of course the Vichycrats are silent. It doesn’t fit the narrative. Policy is no longer allowed in the public discourse, only the narrative. Ask PJ Crowley.
I duly note that David Koch, amongst other rightwing zillionaires, is now prominently “funding” various programs at least on PBS. The rightward swing of CNN & PBS/NPR simply reflects the PTB who are the true funders & “leaders” of these corrupt media organizations. The Elites only want propoganda to be available to citizens, and that’s pretty much what’s happening.
The Vichyrats don’t give a sh*t about Private Bradley Manning’s torture. Their silence is an *endorsement* of the torture. They want Manning to be tortured as a *lesson* to the rest of us serfs to not question the Elites. The so-called “Democratic” pols, esp at the fed level, ARE part of the upper 2%. Do the math… they’re not going to rock their boat over a serf like Manning, who they perceive to be *dangerous* to their own self-interests.
Sure. The Koch’s figured out a way to insinuate their corporate slant on something that is at least nominally publicly owned. Pure evil.
Yep.
Thank you Jane for making this happen. I am another one of those who fought for the election of Barack Obama–gave money I didn’t have and time canvassing neighborhoods and making calls to states that were up for grabs like North Carolina. While I have been extremely disappointed by the actions of this administration, this is the first time I can say that I am actually disgusted. Politics aside, Obama’s reaction shows a complete lack of morality.
And yet I note – from a blog I visit that archives various rightwing forwards pumped out by rightwing thinktanks – that conservatives are being ginned up to *freak out* because George Soros allegedly (not sure if he does or not) funds programs on PBS. Of course, such rightwing emails *never* mention all the rightwingers who fund programs on PBS/NPR. It’s just booga booga scary scary George Soros!!!!!! geez.

From the previous thread:
““For your own good” is now the new “national security.” …..”
“For Your Own Good, Hidden Cruelty in Child-rearing and the Roots of Violence”
By the late Alice Miller describes very well the source of much sadism. She holds culturally approved abusive child rearing responsible.
Yeah. I used to be a “member” of National Public Radio. That was a long time ago. Let’s put NPR out of its misery.
Me too. And PBS. I’ll bet the Kochs get invited to events and things that my contributions would never get me though.
I signed as well. I am disgusted that this is happening, but realize with a Neo-Liberal in the WH it is expected. It will only get worse so says Naomi Klein.

Justice for Mannig? A Joke!
Great job PrezO! When one’s actions scream louder than, cheap words? Bless the Truth-sayers. Reject the liars.
Like most of us, I wish I could be marching with you, but live too far away. Although Obama’s been dead to me since the great cave in last November, I still find it hard to believe he signed off on Manning’s torture, but the evidence is there before our lying eyes.
Maybe bad conscience, as if he were being forced to do something against his will. If so, he should do the right thing and fall on his sword.
My sentiments exactly!
It’s curious how the administration mimics Quantico. When White House chief of staff Bill Daley learns what Crowley said, he responds, “He’s done.” No back talk! Do as you’re told! Rather than take away his boxers and flip-flops, Obama’s henchman Daley—banker, Democratic Party sachem, dynastic Chicago pol—strips him of his State Department job. It’s like doubling down on the “ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid.”
Before the firing, Obama could plausibly deny knowledge of Manning’s treatment; the White House could have quietly taken Crowley’s criticism as a legitimate team-of-rivals policy squabble, and indeed, it’s possible Crowley intended only to raise the profile of the dispute. Instead the White House came down solidly and publicly for detainee abuse. It may not be, as Talleyrand quipped, worse than the crime, but it’s certainly a mistake, unless Mr. 11-Dimensional-Chess sees victory in treating his base to death by 1,000 cuts.
Even the ‘bots on Daily Kos find such high-minded stances troublesome to prop up. Though they’re undoubtedly working at it! Yet if they were to interpret Obama’s statement on Manning as a statement about them, they might not be quite so eager to defend the indefensible.
Obama is worse than Bush: HE’S TORTURING A UNITED STATES CITIZEN & MEMBER OF OUR ARMED FORCES ON U.S. SOIL!
IPU’d
Is it time to bring back the “Torture is Wrong” banner from way back when?
Huge thank you to Jane and the FDL team for staying on top of this!
Me too.Hopefully someone will film er video this. Good luck folks.
Please correct headline spelling….Surely someone noticed.
If Dennis runs a primary against Obama next year, he’s got my vote and as many others as I can get to.
Yeah, kinda French, isn’t it? :)
