[Editors note: Daniel Ellsberg posted the following statement on the Guardian's website. Reprinted here with permission.]
The WikiLeaks suspect’s mistreatment amounts to torture. Either President Obama knows this or he should make it his business.
President Obama tells us that he’s asked the Pentagon whether the conditions of confinement of Bradley Manning, the soldier charged with leaking state secrets, “are appropriate and are meeting our basic standards. They assure me that they are.”
If Obama believes that, he’ll believe anything. I would hope he would know better than to ask the perpetrators whether they’ve been behaving appropriately. I can just hear President Nixon saying to a press conference the same thing: “I was assured by the the White House Plumbers that their burglary of the office of Daniel Ellsberg’s doctor in Los Angeles was appropriate and met basic standards.”
When that criminal behaviour ordered from the Oval Office came out, Nixon faced impeachment and had to resign. Well, times have changed. But if President Obama really doesn’t yet know the actual conditions of Manning’s detention – if he really believes, as he’s said, that “some of this [nudity, isolation, harassment, sleep-deprivation] has to do with Private Manning’s well being”, despite the contrary judgments of the prison psychologist – then he’s being lied to, and he needs to get a grip on his administration.
If he does know, and agrees that it’s appropriate or even legal, that doesn’t speak well for his memory of the courses he taught on constitutional law.
The president refused to comment on PJ Crowley’s statement that the treatment of Manning is “ridiculous, counterproductive and stupid”. Those words are true enough as far as they go – which is probably about as far as a state department spokesperson can allow himself to go in condemning actions of the defence department. But at least two other words are called for: abusive and illegal.
Crowley was responding to a question about the “torturing” of an American citizen, and, creditably, he didn’t rebut that description. Prolonged isolation, sleep deprivation, nudity – -that’s right out of the manual of the CIA for “enhanced interrogation”. We’ve seen it applied in Guantánamo and Abu Ghraib. It’s what the CIA calls “no-touch torture“, and its purpose there, as in this case, is very clear: to demoralise someone to the point of offering a desired confession. That’s what they are after, I suspect, with Manning. They don’t care if the confession is true or false, so long as it implicates WikiLeaks in a way that will help them prosecute Julian Assange.
That’s just my guess, as to their motives. But it does not affect the illegality of the behaviour. If I’m right, it’s likely that such harsh treatment wasn’t ordered at the level of a warrant officer or the brig commander. The fact that they have continued to inflict such suffering on the prisoner despite weeks of complaint from his defence counsel, harsh publicity and condemnation from organisations such as Amnesty International, suggests to me that it might have come from high levels of the defence department or the justice department, if not from the White House itself.
It’s no coincidence that it’s someone from the state department who has gone off-message to speak out about this. When a branch of the US government makes a mockery of our pretensions to honour the rule of law, specifically our obligation not to use torture, the state department bears the brunt of that, as it affects our standing in the world.
The fact that Manning’s abusive mistreatment is going on at Quantico – where I spent nine months as a Marine officer in basic school – and that Marines are lying about it, makes me feel ashamed for the Corps. Just three years as an infantry officer was more than enough time for me to know that what is going on there is illegal behaviour that must be stopped and disciplined.

Thank you, Mr. Ellsberg, for caring so much. That this President doesn’t care is quite a testament to his callous heart and skewed moral compass; I was sickened that he said he’d answered the ‘substantive part’ of the question. He didn’t even come close. If you think about how many wrongs the man could right by just the stroke of a pen, or a phone call, it makes one sick to hear his passive supporters kvetch that he could have done more, but for those nasty Republicans in Congress.
You did such a great service to this country; try to sleep tonight; it will be hard for all of us.
Thank you, Mr. Ellsberg. You are a true patriot – as is Bradley Manning.
Ashamed for America
Torture/ Murder/ Treason has come home to roost.
This is who we are and what we have become.
Please stop torturing an innocent until proven guilty AMERICAN President Obama
FDL readers are doing what they can to get our elected representatives interested: http://my.firedoglake.com/edwardteller/2011/03/11/helping-keep-sen-begich-informed-as-he-prepares-to-responded-to-the-inhumane-treatment-of-pfc-manning/
Maybe president obama should lay off the random assassinations , via drones, till he regrips reality.
Do the drone missiles have nose cameras so the CIC can see the look on the targets before they are blown to hell? Does he get his jollies watching snuff films he authored ?
Does the president have access to the psycho-sexual live feed of the early morning standing at attention review of Bradley Manning ? ***Edited in Moderation***

Thank you, Mr. Ellsberg — you’re a true American patriot in an era where the term has been debased almost beyond meaning.
Those wanting to help Manning can go to http://www.bradleymanning.org or http://www.couragetoresist.org.
This is getting legs in Europe. I passed one of Jane’s posts last week to friends in France, and got a response that it was going to be put in the right hands. I’m sure I’m not the only one.
“When a branch of the US government makes a mockery of our pretensions to honour the rule of law, specifically our obligation not to use torture, the state department bears the brunt of that, as it affects our standing in the world.”
This is just embarrassing. The whole world can see the mistreatment of Bradley Manning and see through the White House and Pentagon dissembling. The king is wearing no clothes yet the government persists that if they believe in and insist on the contrary others will too.
Given all the anguish so many of us have felt during this Bradley Manning saga, I have forgotten to be thankful that he’s had a lawyer.
My gawd, that’s the fine line that’s kept information coming out and some hope alive.
Your forthright comments about Mr. Manning’s abusive mistreatment, about the direction for that coming from those in high office, and about the long term troubles this will cause the Corps are much appreciated.
Mr. Ellsberg
The nation and it’s people owe you a great debt of gratitude for your honesty, bravery, and steadfast vigilance in keeping citizens informed of the treason and skullduggery our so-called elected officials and this President try to enable not only in the dark of the night, but also in broad daylight!
As wendydavis and others here have stated: Thank you sir!
And just one more thing I think you failed at was not having the former administration prosecuted for the Torture/ Murder/ Treason you now wallow in .
That was the historic infamous fork in the road you were presented with and you cast your lot on the wrong side of history.
You would have been hailed as Martin ‘s twin brother breaking us free from the bondage of fear of our ” other” brothers and sisters. You failed, we pay.
You would have crushed the party of greed and hate for our lifetimes with prosecutions and prison time or to put it another way, righted our wrongs. You didn’t place torture/ murder/ treason at the front of the line and we pay, to this day.
Seriously, did anyone think that they would ever be more ashamed of their country then you were under Bush? I know I didn’t.
I wonder if Michelle is still so “proud” of her country.
When is Obama going to have Bush and Cheney arrested for their attack on New York City?
To the mods
Sorry, thanks for holding me back from crossing the line.
Torture has been effectively legalized because the US failed to prosecute the people who decided to torture at Abu Graib and Guantanamo. Cheney and Rummy.
Same here.
In fact, I’m ready to call for Obama’s impeachment. I strongly suspect he is the first American president to ever torture an American soldier.
Thank you very much for sharing this great article with our community here.
“That’s what they are after, I suspect, with Manning. They don’t care if the confession is true or false, so long as it implicates WikiLeaks in a way that will help them prosecute Julian Assange.”
I agree that this seems the most likely reason for their conduct. And I won’t be surprised at all to hear it reported that Manning does indeed “commit suicide” once they’ve got their “confession.”
And I expect that this is only the beginning, unfortunately.
I do, however, find it astounding that they are allowing this all to play out on such a public stage. It’s like they just don’t care anymore.
Not In My Name!
Pfc Manning is being Tortured by most of our laws and treaties we have ratified…
It sickens me to see the Government take so lightly the welfare of a natural born citizen who is only “Alleged” to have leaked “Secret” documents… Unlike the out right lying by Bush about the Iraq War… WTF did I give 3 years of my life for??
This IS not the way Our country is supposed to work… FUCK!!
I am not sure what upsets me more. The people calling themselves Democrats or Liberals who would be up in arms if Manning received this treatment under President Bush remaining quiet, or the fact that this hypocrisy is going to be used by the right wing..and rightfully so.
Because it is hypocritical.
Ratigan mentioned this on his show tonight TRANSCRIPT and if you go on twitter #ratigan, you will see the wingers gleefully remarking on this.
And it pisses me off. But it would not be happening if people held ALL politicians to the same level, and didn’t give members of “their team” a pass.
I got really indignant this afternoon when Ratigan bad mouthed the left for ignoring Manning, until he backtracked a bit and acknowledged the “great work” firedoglake and Glenn Greennwald have been doing seconds later. Nice to get a shout out from time to time.
It a sad commentary on what our country has become. Thank you for speaking out, Mr. Ellsberg. The current situation with poor Bradley Manning doesn’t bode well for the future of our republic. When we torture even one of our own, the end must be near!
Yeah…I tweeted him about FDL and Greenwald just before he finally included them.
But he was correct…there should be an outcry from the Dems…and it is only the groups referred to as the FAR left by the MSM talking about Manning.
Indeed, if we impeach (and convict)Obama, we would lose the problem of having this pathetic milque-toast running in 2012.
While Biden is a bit of a fool when he runs his mouth, I do not believe is he is so easily rolled as the Big O.
I didn’t watch Ratigan’s show, but he’s mostly correct to call out the left for ignoring Manning. Other than here & the foreign press & Amnesty Intern’l, there’s precious little about Manning. When I tell my trad-Dem & progressive friends, they are mostly *clueless* about this; attempt to change the topic when I use the words “torure a US citizen being held without a charge on US soil.”
Frankly, citizens mostly don’t want to know about it, for shame for shame for shame.
Thank you for sharing Mr. Ellsberg’s wonderful words; I have heard/read him defending Manning for a while and speaking eloquently about it. The situation is abjectly appalling, and I would like for nothing more than for Obama to be impeached at this point. I am beyond of the point of merely being livid with rage about what’s being done in my name… this is so wrong on so many levels.
At this stage, rightwingers are *somewhat* correct to point out the hypocrisy, I suppose, but how ’bout they get off of their lazy butts and actually *speak out* in Manning’s defense. Frankly conservatives who wish to sit on the sidelines indulging themselves endlessly in casting stones just because it’s not their “team” are a full of it as anyone else.
Get up and stand up for what’s right or STFU.
Free Bradley Manning!! What’s being done to him is a travesty of justice, is criminally wrong and must end as soon as possible.
Then the rest of the day it was crickets… Cenk, zip, tweety, zip, LOD, zip,
rachel loud crickets….
Ratigan is right, TPM, zip, Kos quiet, and he has Jane on regularly to keep the story somewhat alive.
Today’s presser with the president was gobsmacking.
Just when you think this guy couldn’t plumb a greater depth of betrayal, this presser happens.
My head exploded when he gave that curt, dismissive response. The same sociopathic response his predecessor would naturally give.
If we know what we know and this guy unblinkingly gives a pass to this kind of torment to an uncharged American citizen, what the fuck is that Nobel Peace Prize doing in his possession.
his is the worst vote of my 62 years, I am so sorry.
Definitely should be some outrage from the left. He was spot on to point out the hypocrisy because we all would have been apoplectic if this had been a Bush trick. Kos almost never mentions Manning.
Yeah well Sherrod Brown was on Cenk last night preaching how Obama had his “big microphone” and was going to “do something” about the situation in WI. Bugger me for a joke about that, much less anything to do with Manning.
I may be missing something, and truly hope I’m wrong, but I haven’t seen ONE word being said by *any* Democrats in support of Manning so far, much less calling on Obama to stand up for once and do what’s right. I’m willing to stand corrected on that, but that’s what I see: NADA, Bupkiss as usual from what we laughingly call the “Democratic” politicians. Worthless useless bought off hacks, if ya ask me.
How ’bout we start with radically *cutting* ALL of their salaries and their benefits? That’s some budget cuts I’d really like to see happen.
“President Obama Says He’ll Take the Pentagon’s Word for It: Treatment of Bradley Manning Is Appropriate” (ABC News, March 11, 2011, 2:46 PM)
WTF? D00d, that’s tewetelly bass-ackwards. “Lawyer” guy, it works like this: 1) the civilian leadership directs the military, 2) the Geneva Conventions are what apply. If Obama can’t get that straight, he ain’t no commander-in-chief as the tail is wagging the dog and he gets to wear his failure as the whole chain of command all the way down to the jail keepers at Gitmo West sure look like they have lost their sh#t looking for a scapegoat. What a waste being a body shield for the banksters as they will only throw Obama and the military under the bus in the end.
My vote for the Great Pretender makes me feel ever more sick with each passing day, but I’m also ticked off with what passes for the “left” in this pathetic country anymore. Where the eff are the people? Why can they NOT be bothered to open their eyes and SEE what’s happening, much less respond in kind??
The acceptable torture of one is the acceptable torture of anyone.
Maybe O is the anti-christ after all. He sure is good a lying. And normalizing torture.
I am not holding my breath on Obama getting involved in the entire issue of the GOP governors working to take away union rights, voting rights for traditional Democratic voters, etc… It is one thing to not provide leadership…but so many politicians are not even following the will of the Democratic voters.
And while I raged when the issues going on in so many states like Wisconsin, Michigan, Florida, Indiana, Ohio, etc were mostly ignored by our supposed free press and replaced with fluff pieces or Charlie Sheen news…I cannot rage that the horrendous tragedy that took place in Japan will be filling up most of the news. The Republicans will use this for their advantage, but I hope recalls do happen and this does not get forgotten for too long.
The new USMC indoctrination manual http://www.jabulela.com/animals-humans/inquisition-torture-tools immunize the jailers.
Yes we are inseparable all for one one for all E Pluribus Unum.
John Donne..“ … any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.. ”
— Donne, Meditation XVII[15]
Obama owns Manning’s torture. The I have actually asked… drivel from today’s presser just confirms it. There is no way such a high profile prisoner’s treatment isn’t followed and allowed by him.
And its high time other decent members of the administration/gov/mil take a public stand. Your conscience and our country is at stake. So where are you?
Ernest Hemingway chose that quote in his book about the Spanish before the preface civil war
TKS
I’ve sent yet another email to President Obama requesting him to take Manning off POI, allow him to sleep through the night and the exercise whenever he pleases.
There was an article at Kos today. Included a couple of links to Marcy here, too.
[UPDATED] Clinton Spokesperson Denounces Treatment of Manning/President Responds
Perhaps at least the torture of Manning will be used to beat Obama over the head with when he tries to extradite Assange. Assange’s assertions that he could end up in Guantanamo were laughed off, but having seen that Obama doesn’t need to send you to Gitmo to get the same results – even without a trial – have to make an successful extradition iffy, no? The US is fast leaving the orbit of civilised nations, and they can’t turn a blind eye to it forever.
The on-line NYT description of the President’s response re: Bradley Manning: “The president said he had been assured that measures such as forcing Pfc. Bradley Manning to sleep without clothing were justified and for his safety.”
That is a classic! Is this man even human?
I’m about to actively campaign for the libertarian candidate in 2012 just to throw the asshole we have as president now out on his ear. He if just plain horrible. He is so inept he can’t even get Florida to agree to a high speed rail project and now he is defending the treatment of Bradley Manning. Someone needs to tell him to just “SHUT THE FUCK UP” Obama – you look more stupid as each day passes. To my African-American brothers – too God damn bad. The first black president is a total loser.
When the standard is “anything that doesn’t kill you isn’t torture”, that’s not saying much.
