As Chair of the Board of Directors of the FDL Association, let me extend a warm welcome to all of our Founding Members! I hope many more of you will join us. (For those of you who don’t know Ed Walker/masaccio, check out my bio on this page.)
I am a recovering lawyer, so Jane drafted me to put together the by-laws. I knew we wanted to use membership in your public radio station, or your public television station as a model, but those groups are strictly fund-raising, and do not give members any role in the station. In most communities, even the board of directors of the radio station has little role in programming, and certainly no role in determining which subjects are fit for reporting and discussion. That part of the NPR model wouldn’t work for this crowd.
And we wouldn’t want it to. FDL members want information and analysis, sure, but they want more. Many of our readers want to be involved in the issues, writing posts, engaging in discussion in the comments with everyone who posts anything. Others are looking for organized ways to engage in policy and politics more directly. Still others simply want to support a strong national presence for progressive ideas. The By-Laws were drafted to support these goals, and leave flexibility for future growth.
The By-Laws begin by describing goals and purposes of Firedoglake, Inc., the company that operates the website:
i. It provides investigative reporting on matters of public interest;
ii. It provides political and policy analysis, criticism and development from a progressive perspective;
iii. It engages in political advocacy, including but not limited to support for specific proposals, legislation, executive actions/regulations/orders and advocacy for or against specific candidates for public elected office or executive nominations
iv. It provides an internet/blog forum for the dissemination and discussion of all of the above
v. It provides a platform to develop, train, and provide experience to emerging writers, media experts, and others engaged in all of the above.
I didn’t put this into the By-Laws, but perhaps I should have: all of us try to do all of the above while maintaining a unique sense of humor. We also connect to our culture, including art, music, television, food and sports. Next there are the goals and purposes of the FDL Association:
i. To support the writers and publishers of the website Firedoglake.com.
ii. To support the political activities of Firedoglake, Inc.
iii. To practice the principles of cooperative action leading to progressive political change.
The first two are obvious: the FDL Association intends to provide financial resources to keep FDL on the internet, and to encourage direct political action. I’ll take partial credit for that third one, because it expresses my hopes for the future. Slowly but surely we are building tools to enable our community to take cooperative actions at all levels of society, government, private sector, or interest groups, in or out of the Veal Pen. MyFDL gives us a portal for that kind of organizing, and there are many possibilities for breaking away from the corporate/rich people domination of every aspect of society.
I don’t know exactly how this will work out, but I know that I am inspired by the brave and brilliantly organized young people of Egypt and by the self-organizing people of Wisconsin who came together and in the process found their own brand of leadership. I want the FDL Association to push for that kind of effectiveness.
Please help us make FDL all that our board dreams it can be.
By the way, that bio has my e-mail address … just sayin’.

About Firedoglake
Off topic a bit masaccio: My friend in Ehime, Nihon has surfaced and he is fine. Ehime was indeed sheltered from the worst of the tsunami.
I am very happy be one of the founding members. FDL has been my refuge from the untruths on TV since 07… I am in agreement with the By-Laws but also the Spirit of our community, because that is what it truly is…
We owe a lot to Jane and Redhead for the founding and the soul of FDL..
Thanks Ed, Jane, Teddy, RGB, and and and for what has been created!!!
Thank you Ed.
masaccio! Bravo to you and the rest of the folks at FDL for putting this program together. I hope the membership fees continue to support and grow this operation organically for years to come.
So is it just going to be the first 500 who will be called “founders”? Will they then be able to treat newer members with a certain amount of disdain? I’m asking because if that’s so, it seems like a BIG benefit to me to sign up NOW!
Who’s Jane Teddy? ;)
Great news Peg… I sure feel for Japan.. This tantrum of Mother Nature affected the west coast and iirc one man was swept out to sea!
“we wanted to use membership in your public radio station, or your public television station as a model”
You should be looking at Pacifica, not NPR.”
Pacifica is organized to be very responsive to members. Any contributor can run for the board and anyone can submit programming ideas.
From another thread on Wednesday, “founding member” would be printed on the membership cards of those that signed up during the first year of the program.
shit Kris for a lousy comma… gimme me a break (:>))
4 swept out to sea, 1 confirmed dead. 3 others still missing. Crescent City, CA.
ED!
So I was wondering about a 2 part question/idea:
Aside from the geographic groups like CO-01 for instance, how about making issue groups? Like Women’s Rights, LGBT, etc. And also, if FDL could ever make it so that if one used #LGBT like a twitter hashtag in the regular tags for a post, that if you belonged to that group you could get an email alert that “Hey, there’s a post about a group you belong to?”
I, am a terrific abuser of, the comma! I think it’s, grossly, under-utilized.
That would be pretty awesome. The ability to follow trending discussions from the front page would change the way we use the site, I’m sure.
I was also thinking yesterday that email notifications for responses to posted comments would be cool. There are a lot of instances where responses happen hours after a thread has been left and the commenter never gets an answer.
ya mean not in the first week???… I could’a waited…(:>)) (:>)) ☺♣♠♦♥
so I missed it… blame Mendocino..
I like that idea. :)
Edit: Okay that turned out weird. Never mind.
First time I saw that page. Very inspiring.
ROLFMAO!!
*smooch*
I was thinking that it could make MyFDL more powerful. You wouldn’t have to actually KNOW other peoples email addresses, especially lurkers. And POW you would get more coverage for one, and could probably organize a geo or issue oriented action more easily.
All still staying anonymous if you wanted to.
Yeah, I see enormous potential for issue organizing. Kinda like a special interest group.
It’s going to be very exciting to see how FDL members develop the enterprise in ways we’ve talked about, and in new ways we haven’t yet foreseen. The first of these, of course, is the scholarship membership sponsor program, which people simply came up with in comment discussions early this week. I’m always amazed at the FDL community; this was another in a series of special moments: “how can I help someone I value who can’t afford this right now?”
Another way to figure out how membership will benefit all of us is the self-organizational part of the equation, as Kelly mentions above. Whether we organize geographically (and whether those geographic organizational elements are large or small) or based on issues, we’ll certainly find ways to manage ourselves and our memberships in novel ways.
You’ve undertaken a challenging role, Masaccio, and I’m delighted to see you post this re-introduction today. Thank you for taking this leadership position; we all look forward to working with you to make FDL a better place as we win the future.
And about the Geo thing. Is there a parent/child relationship with the Congressional Districts and the State built into the groups database?
Again the CO-01 group gets you microtargeted to DeGette, but all CO gets you Udall or Bennet.
I really don’t see why it couldn’t be done.. Not that I am a programmer but just using a group list to send email via most mail services should be as simple as the poster sends an email link of the Diary to a group email address list that the interested parties have joined…
Massacio . . . what a delight to read your diary and the link to the others.
I vaguely knew a lot of their backgrounds, but your link puts the players into a depth of understanding I didn’t have . . .
And it was kewl to read the info/bylaws you shared.
Is FDL a 501,c,3 as Marsdragon recently posted? Just curious, no agenda on my part other than to sort out riff from raff . . .
Had we a dime we could spare FDL would get it . . . alas . . .
I remain a great and devoted reader and fan of The Lake/MyFDL since Libby Gate and thank you and all of FDL/MyFDL (RAYNE!) for what you all do for us readers.
While this is not the ONLY PLACE I get news from it ranks the highest priority for me in terms of depth, breadth and here’s one for the rabble, FDL/MyFDL ranks the HIGHEST in terms of those who comment and add to the dialogue.
All that’s lacking is a better level of trolls, but I guess ya can’t be all things to all people all the time.
*G*
Bless YOU, and each and every one of yaz who work and comment in these forums, I value it greatly and would contribute if I could.
Until I’m employed, I can help in my town if ya want, somehow . . . that I’d contribute . . . *G*

Well when you ARE working again and you will be. Next trip out this way let me know.
What? You haven’t seen me in cowboy drag? Heh.
Would LOVE to see as Audrey Barkley. ;)
LMAO! It’s been about twenty five years!
Great job, Mr. Chairman!
Including lurkers can you declare a quorum? Yes? Good. May I move that the By-Laws as presented here be adopted? Do you require a second? No? That’s good too. You could deem them to become adopted by unanimous consent barring any objection (counting to 100 slowly)?
I just joined. It was the most expensive T’shirt I ever bought. LOL
I joined yesterday, and I am thrilled to be a card carrying member of the Professional left. I admit I was a little jealous of Jane when she flashed her card.
I have couple of questions. I was a little surprised when the form did not ask for my pen name. Of course you are respecting our anonymity, but how do you know if your commenters have had a chance to join, especially in reference to Boxturtle’s scholarship program? In view of Twitter’s order to reveal their member’s ISPs, I imagine that we would not enjoy anonymity if Homeland Security did not want us to. We gave you our e-mails, so our ISP’s could be matched up with our names and addresses, right? I always assume that nothing I write is safe from our own US spies…so I guess it doesn’t really matter. I am just sort of wondering out loud.
I am proud to be a member. You have to put your money where your mouth is.
As one of the first 100 members, it feels good to be here.
Could we get an FDL directory of black and white hats of media pundits? Sort of a Progressive wikipedia of political punditry From old 60 grit to Lanny Davis to David Fucking Brooks et al? With the abundance of information just on this blog alone it would be nice to have a reference with links back to prior FDL posts. It would be a big task, but spread among several authorized firepups with reviewable edits from all readers it could become quite the resource. Naturally it should be absolutely loaded with snark.
Hey Kelly! I’m on the road, and was hijacked by family. Sorry.
I’m almost always the last in a thread so I don’t expect a reply, but I didn’t see Rayne in the list.
This last in line used to be called EPU for the commenter Extra Parallel Universe or something like that, but I haven’t seen him/her around for years or seen a reference to being EPUed.
FDL was a light through those dark Bush years and thoughts of Caribou Barbie in our White House. Now I’m drowning in a tsunami of toxic corporate tea….and find that there is a chance to join others who are as far left as I am.
Woo Hoo! Your Membership Price is is far cheaper than moving to Canada and much more satisfying.
I don’t think of us as far left; more “leftish.” We’re not Communists (well, perhaps some of us are, in which case, as Seinfeld would say, “Not that there’s anything wrong with that”), Marxists, or anarchists (ditto Seinfeld quote).
Right-wing bots would say we’re far left, but I don’t think we should contribute to our own marginalization.
Thank you for your support.
Wear that shirt with pride!
Hi masaccio,
I’ve been a financial supporter of FDL for the last oh three years. Before taking it to the next level to make the commitment you are asking, I have some questions for FDL.
From the By-Laws goals and purposes:
“iii. It engages in political advocacy, including but not limited to support for specific proposals, legislation, executive actions/regulations/orders and advocacy for or against specific candidates for public elected office or executive nominations
v. It provides a platform to develop, train, and provide experience to emerging writers, media experts, and others engaged in all of the above.”
1. Is FDL committed to using its resources and supporting candidates exclusively for members of the Democratic party?
2. Does the “advocacy for special proposals [and] legislation” include single payer?
3. As to v., is the platform available to advocates of candidates, issues, specific proposals, or legislation that fall outside FDL’s agenda and goals and the two party system.
As for this passage:
“Members-only planning . Members can make their voices heard within our organization by participating in exclusive members-only discussions, planning sessions, workshops and voting. Members will work with us on improving MyFDL to offer tools and features that will help community members facilitate their own local organizing.”
This sounds good. This sounds like FDL is seeking to take a step towards being a more democratic organization. I support that. In a case where a majority of members vote one way, and the people at the top oppose, which group carries the most weight in decisions that are made?
