Last month, as the mess in Wisconsin unfolded, Paul Krugman weighed in on the power games being played by Governor Scott Walker and the GOP. Busting the unions in Wisconsin, said Krugman, is “not about the budget; it’s about the power.”
But then he went on to say something that set off all kinds of thoughts that resonate far beyond Madison:
In principle, every American citizen has an equal say in our political process. In practice, of course, some of us are more equal than others. Billionaires can field armies of lobbyists; they can finance think tanks that put the desired spin on policy issues; they can funnel cash to politicians with sympathetic views (as the Koch brothers did in the case of Mr. Walker). On paper, we’re a one-person-one-vote nation; in reality, we’re more than a bit of an oligarchy, in which a handful of wealthy people dominate.
Given this reality, it’s important to have institutions that can act as counterweights to the power of big money.
This is why I love Firedoglake.
Krugman starts to get at what I think FDL does, and does fairly well, as it has grown from Jane’s personal blog into a more institutional presence — and that last sentence explains why FDL’s membership drive is so important.
FDL has proven that it has the chops to take on policy in a deep way — see Libby, health care, BP, warrantless wiretapping, whitewashing torture, LGBT rights, etc. — to counter some of the spin coming from the Village, the Traditional Media, and/or the corporate and political Powers That Be. We don’t do “he said, she said” journalism. We go after what isn’t said, and try to bring it to light. We take what is said and dissect it, teasing out the truth that the spinners either don’t see or don’t want anyone else to see.
Not mentioned in Krugman’s description but central to FDL, I think, is humor in all its flavors. Subtle satire, over-the-top flagrant mockery, politically pointed parody, and inspired photoshops/visual humor play a big role at FDL, and serve to puncture the self-importance of many of those who set themselves up as Those Who Know Things despite plenty of evidence to the contrary. Including ourselves.
The diaries at MyFDL are a big part of this institutional counterweight to corporate big money as well. The diaries serve not only to give writers a platform, but also to bind the readership of FDL to the broader institution (“I don’t just read and comment, but put up my own stuff on the FDL community site!”), and to strengthen FDL more generally by pointing folks to important stories that might otherwise get missed. A given MyFDL diarist may not be the greatest blogger in general, but then comes that one subject where he or she has incredible personal insights, professional expertise, or fresh on-the-scene information about a current news story, and the editor can push that to the FDL front page immediately.
Then there are the lurkers — a term of endearment for those who read but do not comment. I am convinced by seeing the effects of FDL’s activism efforts (trying to influence legislation, for instance) that the lurkers are a huge part of FDL’s presence in the political conversations around this country. (If you don’t think lurkers matter, you might want to keep it to yourself, lest the Lurking Mod take offense. What other blog do you know that has its own Lurking Mod?)
I am often stunned to discover the range of talents, professional backgrounds, and personal expertise of the writers and commenters at FDL. I’ll plow through posts and comments, and sit back with a silly grin on my face as I think “Damn, we’re an impressive bunch.”
FDL doesn’t have billions of dollars, but we’ve got a growing ability to serve as a counterweight to those who do. If you’re looking for a pithy description of FDL’s mission and a reason to become a member of FDL, I think The Shrill One may have handed it to you.
And with every member who joins, that counterweight gets just a little bigger.

About Firedoglake
Well said!! Cracks me up when some of the teevee shows follow a format that pretty much matches the order and content of the posts of the day. FDL humorous quips get quoted fairly often too…hahahaha
Thanks, Peterr, and thanks for all your posts and comments to help us along the way.
Speaking of activists — many of us are involved in various efforts, some local, some global, but all important.
I live in Bellingham, WA, a beautiful spot. Coal interests and other corporations are trying to ram through a COAL SHIPPING TERMINAL just north of our town. This facility would ship coal to CHINA! Yes, China!
While this target of this petition effort is WA State elected officials, we encourage all interested parties to sign on! SOLIDARITY!
Please consider adding your voice to PROTECT CHERRY POINT FROM COAL SHIPPERS
…now, I’d better get out my credit card and put my money where my mouth is for FDL. :-)
Krugman’s getting as bad as Mustache of Wisdom: a moderate command of the obvious.
In your dreams. Obama received $500 Million reasons in his election campaign why this is just not the case. I understand he’s now out looking for another $1 Billion reasons to continue his good work.
I am personally familiar with that “silly grin” Peterr
there are two UT Law professors probably still scratching their heads wondering how that old waitress knew the advantages and pitfalls in employing the “Scottish Defense”
- firedog Prof Andy (he was ‘only’ a nuclear physicist at Yale :D) explaining to all us firedogs why so much of the hair on fire claims on Iran’s centrifuges was bunk

ARE YOU KIDDING? Fed Investigation Can’t Find Single Homeowner Wrongfully Foreclosed Upon

–ARE YOU KIDDING?
Fed Investigation Can’t Find Single Homeowner Wrongfully Foreclosed Upon
Fed Report Finds No Wrongful Foreclosures By Banks, Consumer Advocates Slam Methodology
WASHINGTON, D.C. — A months-long investigation into abusive mortgage practices by the Federal Reserve found no wrongful foreclosures, members of the Fed’s Consumer Advisory Council said Thursday.
During a public meeting attended by Fed chairman Ben Bernanke and other regulators, consumer advocates on the panel criticized federal bank regulators for narrowly defining what constitutes a “wrongful foreclosure.” At least one member of the panel voiced concerns that the public would not take the Fed’s findings of improper practices seriously, since the wide-ranging review did not find a single homeowner who was wrongfully foreclosed upon.
I recognize it’s not for everyone, but auto-renewal gives any organization some financial stability and cost savings. First of all, FDL can anticipate an income stream next March that closely tracks the money raised in the inaugural membership drive now. Secondly, the cost of raising next year’s money goes way, way down if people agree to auto-renew: no need to design new webpages, the tech crew can keep focused on making this a better website, writer can focus on issues in the news rather than ‘pledge drive asks.’
Again, I understand not everyone is comfortable with the auto-renew, but I hope folks will trust our security and privacy while lowering FDL’s cost of fundage.
Thanks for your support!
These people are insane; they are covering up for the banks.
Here’s one big plus for automatic renewals. It gives Jane a possibility of raising capital on the strength of the anticipated cash flow. There may be situations (I don’t know what they might be) where a quick injection of capital could help the site. The security of an expected cash flow is the basis for credit.
Now, if Jane were really crafty, she’d set up one of those high-leverage hedge funds, do some naked shorts on these newfangled financial instruments that Yves Smith is always writing about and give us a share of her ill-gotten gains. People’s capitalism, or something like that.
A long time, daily lurker here who’s relied on the FDL Community for moral support in these times for years now.
Thanks for the monthly option – it’s made it possible for me to sign up as a member. What a privilege to be in the same club as Norske Flamethrower, Peterr, Phoenix Woman, MsMolly, Suzanne, Demi, ecahn, et al – unnamed, only because your list is so long, but none of you less important or appreciated. Thanks to each of you, along with special thanks to Jane for giving us a place to gather for respite as well as for planning/doing battle.
I may not be much of a swimmer, but that sitting by the fire to stay warm (-especially during Laker games!) on cool nites: that’s something else!
From 2009, right here at FDL — “Talking Economic Accountability with William Black“:
Sad to say, it appears that the Fed has confirmed Bill Black’s diagnosis of their abilities.
Note, please, that this diagnosis was reported here at FDL almost exactly two years ago. TWO YEARS AGO.
Sorry for the shouting. It was either that, or bang my head against the desk.
Can you see why this place matters?
Welcome out of the shadows, friend!
oh Teddy is there any institution in this country not corrupt ?
oh yes,a great deal
I’ve got some questions.
If money is given to this organization who determines which candidates will receive support and which values it is okay to compromise on?
As someone who feels like politically I have no home because of massive betrayals from the traditional Democratic party I tend to be cautious about donating.
Still I think some of the reporting here and alot of the values are ones I could get behind.
I understand the situation as you describe it, but I still prefer to renew w/o the auto feature. Burned a couple of times.
I trust FDL! No problem there.
As someone who joined on the first day memberships were offered, I’m here to report that I got a call this morning from someone at FDL who’s like my own concierge or something. Concierge isn’t the right word; I think she said “ambassador,” but I think it’s cool to have my own concierge or ambassador or whatever.
Join if only for the concierge, I say!
Maybe it was membership coordinator?
oh crap

Wis. lawmakers pass bill to curb union rights
Gov. Scott Walker says he’ll sign legislation as soon as possible

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin lawmakers have voted to strip nearly all collective bargaining rights from the state’s public workers in one of the strongest blows to the power of unions in years.
The state’s Assembly passed Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s explosive proposal 53-42 Thursday. The state’s Senate approved it the night before after using a procedural move to bypass its AWOL Democrats.
Walker says he’ll sign the legislation as quickly as possible.
The vote brings a swift end to a standoff over union rights that has rocked Wisconsin and the nation. Tens of thousands of protesters have converged on the state’s Capitol for weeks of demonstrations.

i might just take this shriveled old body to Madison
may i ask what you take turmeric for,im a curious nutrionist……. g
I’m one of those lurkers (here, at least) who registered just to post this. We’re out there, and we appreciate all the effort put into this site. I use it all the time for staying abreast of the issues as I debate on other sites. In particular, Jane Hamsher and Marcy Wheeler are incredible assets to the progressive community.
Jane Hamsher deserves enormous credit for stepping up to the plate and starting FDL, for her ability to counter whatever bull is thrown at her, and for her dedication to the Progressive cause above any party or individual. Additionally I’d like to thank her for how she’s reached out to Bradley Manning – solitary is no place for a human being, let alone the situation he’s in.
Marcy Wheeler has an unparalleled ability to hunt out a story, pursue it mercilessly, and to summarize it directly and concisely. It’s not flashy and she’s not an attention seeker – it’s just good journalism.
Thanks again for being here for us!
Hi, you asked me that in a thread yesterday, and I answered..now I don’t know which thread it was…Muscle and joint pain resulting from having to completely rebuild my body after being bedridden for months and months. Half tsp. turmeric, pinch of cardamon, honey, stirred and heated in milk..whenever needed. Works like a charm.
I wish there were more blogs that cared more about policy than the letter after somebody’s name. Daily Kos has a lot of resources but they waste them defending this indefensible administration. I can’t think of many Obama policies at all that they wouldn’t have clearly been dead against had they been Bush policies. In fact, many of them were Bush policies.
” naked shorts ” – - love that term – - :-)
Perhaps we could securitize the American factory asset value backed debt of some businesses that are next on China’s list of jobs to move to China (or on a US M&A list of candidates to buy and improve by moving the jobs offshore) – and then short the derivatives – it is a proven winner for getting rich. And since the only losers will be the banks and a few pension funds we do not care about who buy the other side of the short derivative – and the tax payer will bail out the bank – it is more or less “win-win”.
The idea that US corps would never give up trade secrets in return for cheap labor overseas seems so old. The idea that there is a corp “loyal” to the US and the US worker seems so quaint. Only thing left of that idea is the “need to lower the corporate income tax so that “small business” (we do not say corporations) can create American jobs” and “get rid of unions and regulations so that American exceptionalism can be brought forth by small business (“corporations”) to bring us prosperity”.
Thank you, Peterr. You are someone whose opinion I always look forward to seeing – both for affirmation and inspiration.
Who the Lake supports depends on the community. The Lake itself doesn’t give money to candidates but if a candidate has a progressive record the community is encouraged to support that candidate both financially and by working for him/her if s/he is in your district/state. ActBlue and BlueAmerica are the main vehicles for donating to candidates.
It’s really too bad the cards don’t say “Aging Hippie Liberal Douche”.
Hilarious!
thank you,i was looking for answer last nite,am going through horrible shoulder pain….hugs
It works for me unbelievably…you can take it like that 2x a day or in food. About an hour later, you’ll notice it stops hurting…at least that has been my experience. I don’t take medications…this works for me, and I’m pretty skeptical about stuff like that. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory and analgesic…
a million thanx…..me no likey Rxs either
There’s a certified nutritionist who has an hour show on WMNF every other Monday. She swears by tumeric for a variety of stuff.
Welcome !
this should help to allay your concerns :D
It’s been a miracle for me. It has a gazillion benefits…lots of research on it.
it is wunnerful,i give it to dogs and cats for anti inflamatory properties
I can’t claim credit. I stole it from South Park when aging hippie liberal douche was debating pissed off redneck.
i know it sounds crazy,if somebody drives me,i would go to WI,we are being destroyed

At this point, I think General Strike is their best option…in fact, for the whole country.

Ah … I’ll try that too!
When I first tried it, I was a chickensh*t, then I called my friend and said, “You won’t believe this…no pain for the first time in 10 months”…I kept waiting to see if I was imagining it..Nope.
GO team!!!!
I would like to de-lurk (ever so briefly) to say thanks to everyone for the education you’ve given me. I proudly became a member today to support the important work you’re doing. Keep it up – you’re reaching more people than you know!
De-lurk more! :)
Where’d you find that stuff?
I’m finding yoga has been great for me, but some old injuries are acting up and the yoga is taking time to resolve them. And when I *overdo* it (easy with my chronic troubles) I can get completely whacked out. I know it’s inflammation and I know some of my symptoms have been resolved by resolving some specific inflammations, so I think this might be really helpful to me! Thanks for sharing the info!
All the way at the bottom of the page, little box that says “site meter”.
Click on it :)
I have the exact same thing…and it can leave me sore for days..but not anymore.
… and a world of wonders shall be revealed! :-)
Well, JHFC, duh. I never look down there. *g*
Here’s to our health! And the kittehs’ too. Me no likey any big pharma no more.
Yup..tastes pretty good too. I forgot to add that you add a little “ghee” to smooth it out…just a tiny bit. You can use water or milk. It is often used to relieve chest colds too. It also has an anti-histamine effect.
I’m apparently too healthy for my own good. Nothing other than aspirin for 30+ years.
Yeah, I’ve only looked at it once or twice. Just remembered it was there because of IsIs’ post.
So glad to hear that, SD! Plain old asparin is *very* helpful, ain’t it.
I’ve been like you also. Now, I’m allergic to aspirin and can’t take other stuff either, that’s why I ended up with the turmeric. I’m actually very healthy and athletic..just had one humungous series of events/injuries that laid me up and hurt my organs for awhile. Now, I’m fine.
Anti-histamine, you say! Wow. I coulda used this years ago. I used to live on otc anti-histamines. My histamines have histamines ~ no kidding. But I got *over* all of that. Used to cost me a minor fortune in pills.
Started taking 1 a day to help prevent stroke. VA doc’s advice. I get colds and flu but just let them burn themselves out. Do not like putting crap in me.
Thanks. Now that I’m a card-carrying member, maybe I will. It always seems that someone has already said what I’m thinking (but has said it better), so I just clam up. I hereby resolve to at least say “hi”.
Just jump right on in any old time.
I remember feeling that way when I first discovered the Lake. Lurked for quite a while but it doesn’t take long for ya to hit your stride once you start commenting.
Welcome to the Lake!
ditto!
Thank you very much. I promise to jump in – it really is the best way to get into the water.
It’s a kick when people just pop in and say “I agree!” ~ I can say that from personal experience. Welcome to the Lake!
Late to this discussion but Google “turmeric” and you see a lot of good info, including from doctors, about its benefits.
I have the same feeling, janetplanet. Most of what I say doesn’t have the wisdom so many commenters have. But we’re a good group and you’re always welcome to chime in!
Margaret, if you’re still around, did you email me this morning? Your comment said, “Incoming” in reply to my invitation to everyone to send me email, but I never got any from you or anyone.
That’s what I’ve been talking about. There is tons of info on it. It works. :)
Didja check yer spam folder? Happens to me occasionally.
Yes, I did. Gmail must have a really good spam filter, because the only things that wind up there are real spam, and very little of it. Which means they are blocking most of it, I think. My work email has a spam filter too, but I get a couple a day trapped in there.
I received a call from Mary Mcurmin (I think that’s how it’s spelled) I couldn’t believe someone called little ole me. Pretty impressive.
I’ve been having a few little issues keeping me away more than I like and I’ve missed you folks! I’m glad to support FDL, financially and otherwise. I genuinely like and respect my fellow firedogs, and I’m proud to claim that I hang out here, a place which was at one time referred to as a “foulmouthed femblog”. I’m pretty sure that Jane has had the last laugh on that one!
You have a lurker mod? Seriously, what does a lurker mod do?
I, too, am one of the lurkers. On other sites I comment a lot. Here I read and learn. This is one of the few sites that I read every day. You people impress me. You think big thoughts and dream big dreams.
I found this site because of Jane being a guest on Countdown. Damn, I miss Keith.
