I’ve been calling a lot of the people who have joined the FDL Membership Program over the past couple of days, and it’s been one of the most fun things I’ve ever done in the five (yikes!) years since we opened the doors. Much to my surprise, many were people who have never even commented here before, and it was the first time I’d ever had the opportunity to interact with many of them.
- Hugh said that he joined because FDL “has become an indispensable source of news.” Civil liberties, and the issues Marcy covers, are important to him: Indefinite detentions, black sites, military commissions. “What was once an aberration under Bush has now become normalized.”
- Robert has been around since the Plame days. Told me “I have no problem financially supporting a news organization, I subscribe to magazines.” Number one issue for him: “We need to start winning the class war back. They are winning.”
- Charles said FDL “is the #1 site I go to when I turn on my computer. I am just grateful for all the good work you do.” Excited about participating in membership conference calls.
- Christopher wants to see an FDL store that carries union-made swag, and perhaps goods made by FDL members. Volunteered to proofread if we need it. (As the world’s worst speller, I may take him up on that.)
- Twain is doing great, she’s always a big supporter. I got to her name and said “I know Twain,” but thought “heck, I’ll call her anyway, just to hear her voice.” She offered to pay for a membership for somebody who needed one, and we helped set that up.
- Jerry has been around since the blogspot days. Says it’s his first read in the morning. Loves what Marcy does, and likes it when he sees FDL folks on TV. Thinks the work we’re doing here is important and wants to support it.
-Maydaze lives in a very red state where his GOP member of Congress ran unopposed in the last election, so FDL is sort of an oasis. Just wants to be supportive.
- Frank is a regular commenter, but I didn’t know he was Frank33 until he told me. I thanked him for always keeping things lively in the comments! He is interested in national security issues, and volunteered to write about topics that need exposing.
- BlueJeansTShirt – I didn’t know his real name either, and let out a whoop when he told me he was BJTS. He says “every time he comes on the blog, there is something new.” When I asked him what he’d like to see in the future, he said “just keep doing what you’re doing. Truly.”
- Terri said she has been reading us for a long time, and “when I figured out it was 30 cents a days, I felt guilty.” I asked her if there was anything we should be covering that we don’t. She said no, “the reason I read you every day is because you cover everything I care about.”
- Susan is very concerned about the economy, the lack of jobs, the environment, and the war on teachers and public workers. She appreciates the wonderful FDL writers like Dave Dayen, Jon Walker and Marcy. She’s been “reading the Lake for a long time, and just happy to help out.”
- Kelly – I know Kelly too, but it was just good to call him and hear his voice. He said everything was good, he was excited to be a founding member of the Membership program, and congratulated everyone on all their hard work. “Kudos to all.”
FDL regulars like Suzanne, Richard and Mary have also been calling new members and letting them know they have someone to contact when they have questions or issues they want to raise. So if you’re a new member, and you get a call from one of us, don’t be surprised.

About Firedoglake
You guys are awesome.
As are you!
Gonna have Mauimom here calling with me soon. She’s coming to town.
I’ve been ignoring an 888 number for 2 days….is that FDL?
I’ve gotten the change to email back and forth with Ryan over the last couple of days, and talked at length on the phone with RBG yesterday. I’m really amazed with the level of interaction with the general readership and the openness of the organization. FDL is truly one of a kind.
I got a call from Richard.. you know the guy with the Cocateil on his head. ☺ ☺. Was a great conservation.. But But I was hoping to talk to you Jane Oh well… Maybe next time and I know You and the whole crew will continue to shine the light of Truth on this “War” on the Middle Class.. And all the other issues we are facing during these very trying times…
Thanks for FDL Jane and thanks to Kelly for encouraging me to participate more when I left Americablog.
Morning Peg. How is the job front going?? And I am sure glad led you to the Lake your wit has been very refreshing… Keep on going girl!!
AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Hamsher:
Now THAT’s what I’m talkin’ about…you go woman!!! The phone calls are a tremendous idea to maintain the “community” idea of FDL, especially as the site grows now, kinda like a corporation goin “public”. But more than personal phone calls from “the boss”, I would like to say that the grunts in the trenches like Rayne, who responded immediately when called to clear up a billing glitch, represent what FDL is all about. Give Rayne and the folks supporting him some public love, Sister Jane. This is the new politics and maybe the new political economy that might just save the idea of democracy. Now if you can just get Lawrence O’Donnell out of Olbermann’s seat we’ll get you elected Empress of the Realm.
Sorry I missed your phone call but I didn’t get the billin’ problem fixed until a few minutes ago.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THE STRUGGLE GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
What a treat it was to hear “hi, this is Jane Hamsher.” Bowled me over. Thanks, Jane, for this wonderful place.
Still awaiting a phone call but the call on Tuesday was encouraging so I’m not fretting about it any more.
best of luck Peg. Hope it is something you like to do..
Citizen Margaret:
Hang in there Sister Margaret…and hello from Madison.
Indeed I agree with Kris@1 but I would like to add that yesterday I had a question about monthly payments so emailed Ryan. It was such a pleasure to get an, almost, instant, courteous and helpful reply.
You guys do incredible work. Emptywheel has had some pretty damn good things happening over in her neck of the woods and today’s revelations are marvelous. Congratulations.
FDL is the required morning reading and venting in this house. Thank you.
Thanks Norske…and hello back from all of those remote from Madison but extremely grateful that there are people like you standing up for workers everywhere.
Norski you must be livid with what has happened in WI be these despicable Repukes!! Hope you guys win in court over this and that a few of them go to jail for their illeageal passing of the bill… You and your fellow citizens are leading the way!! Don’t give in to these fucking Bullies!!
POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!
Citizen Hamsher:
What’s the latest “count” on the membership pledges. Are ya gunna be able to put up a membership graphic with number of people and dollars…maybe post it daily?
Really glad to support all of you here at FDL! Just got my call this morning – since I missed the one last night lol. I thought it was a telemarketer because I keep getting calls from all over the US about how I’ve won cruises and all this other stuff. Anyway, love the slogan too – Independent Media. Kick-Ass Activism. Awesome!
I don’t expect a phone call because I got email about a year ago asking my opinions about what FDL should do. There were a few things that haven’t happened yet. I would like to see more coverage of Latin America. Perhaps there is a contact that you could establish that could keep FDL updated on events there. There doesn’t seem to be very much done on Asia. China and Korea and the smaller Asian states should be covered. I know that expansion takes money, but maybe now you will be on a more solid footing.
I certainly don’t want to see FDL become beholden to big money givers. If someone wants to give a large gift, it should be with the understanding that it buys him/her nothing but a membership on equal footing with everyone else.
Looks like Walker slipped in a provision to enable firing of any striking public sector workers:
He’s really unconcerned or entirely clueless about his future in politics.
i will mail my payment today, just took a look at bank acct.im an animal rescue/animal advocate and allocate most my expendable cash there.i love FDL,and will financially contribute as much as i can…thanks FDL
my only compaint is being mod revued on my comments at book salon…i have almost given up there
Why are you being modded on book salons? I don’t spend a lot of time there but I hope to when I can afford books again.
i dont know why,but it kills the conversation for me
Wait, can I get a phone call from Ms. Hamsher if I join the Lake? That’s motivation enough for me!
Citizen nahant:
We’re recoverin’ here in the Norske bunker…Mrs. Norske is the one in the family that is gettin’ clobbered in all a this but the fascists don’t know what they brought down on themselves by radicalizin’ Mrs. Norske and her sisters in arms in the teachin’ profession. We drove down yesterday and were half way home last evening when we got the word of the putsch in the Assembly. There is so much I’ve seen and learned in the last 3 weeks from bein in Madison and then comin home with the wave of democracy that is sweepin’ this state that at some point I’ll post a few memos of the experience.
We really need to get FDL to put someone on the ground in Madison for regular reports and to provide another outlet for information on orgainzin’ and local actions to people outstate, especially in western Wisconsin. David Dayen has done a great job but his perspective seems to be to a more national audience…maybe if we can get an FDLer that lives in Madison to provide morning and evening reports and schedules FDL could become a go-to place for moment info.
What a wonderful collection of ideas, reactions, and contributions. Thanks for sharing these calls with us, Jane. Glad to hear others are getting good feedback, too. Having a direct point of contact is going to make the FDL membership experience entirely different; it’s something above and beyond what other organizations do.
I’m very excited to see this develop, since I think it will take FDL new places in ways we don’t all entirely understand yet.
Onward!
i am also feeding a few elderly in my neighborhood, mostly beans ,rice cornbread, and spaghetti, chicken in the pot soup etc.
Citizen sadlyyes:
Me too.
hang in there Norski
Yep, I can see that. One of the neocon “user moderators” at Huffington Post put me into automatic moderation one time and it made participation impossible. That’s one reason, (but not the only one), I left.
i guess we are too radical…..hahahahaha
well i just dont participate….thats all
Norske, thanks for going to Madison to represent all of us and our support for these honorable people. Hooray for you and your teacher wife. Teachers are formidable people when they get their backs up.
by the way pups get out the crock pots
chicken soup great for family colds

No. I have a 202 number and am calling from my cell.
I missed your call the other day. When I listened to your message, I just assumed it was Sarah Palin impersonating you. Forgive me, please.
The best things I’ve read this week are the reports of anonymous membership gifts to guys like Margaret and Demi especially since no one’s more deserving of being Founding Members than they are.
It’s a great proof of concept, this membership drive.
Citizen Sadlyyes:
I had an email conversation with Eric Alterman after his session here and he essentailly wrote off the experience and the FDL market for his book. I’m not entirely certain that prepping the authors and contributors with information about the nature of conversation and the freedom that this very well-read and book centered community has on this site wouldn’t be better than tryin to run interferrence for these folks who actually need us more’n we need them. The authors who appear need to understand that they will need to defend their theses with more than the simple response of “read the book”.
I was wondering why I hadn’t gotten a call, and Ryan just helped me figure out that I didn’t complete the registration process. Sweet, now I’m all set. I was hoping to get a <100 number on my membership card, though. Don't think that's in the offing now.
Were you guys surprised by the response to the drive?
dearest Citizen Flamethrower
- no one’s asked, but I would be happy to start cloning the good people of Wisconsin – something in the DNA that makes (purported apathetic) high school students leave class to march in support of dedicated public servants like Mrs Norkse – as I type, Wisconsinites are making a run on the M & I Bank in Madison (2nd highest Walker supporter) I am tellin’ ya, I no longer give a shit how this whole magilla works out, at a very dark time, you good people have shown us what it means to fight on your feet and not live on your knees – this dfh is forever indebted
heh, okay, I’ll call anyone who joins in the next 10 min & notes it in this comment thread.
i agree,Eli said the book was better, but as my college English professor said to me you have to teach me something to get an A…i got As in his class
I stopped even reading Huff. Huff censored (didn’t post) everything I’d write (e.g. I supported the women linked to Tiger Woods who were being word-raped). I wondered if my comments were even getting to them, so I wrote that Huff has the best moderators in the blogosphere. It posted hahaha.
Okay, calling you back now. So you’ll know it’s me.
Citizen cbl:
Bless your heart Citizen but don’t worry about cloning anything, you got everything it takes already… just organize your neighborhood and keep the red flags flyin.
Margret…heading over to “CRITTER SUPPLY” need any viddles?
Huffpo,Kos= dead to me
!!! ding * ding * ding !!!
I think we have a winner. That is EXACTLY the sort of protest that will make a difference!
We’ll know it works if Walker tries to pass a law against withdrawing your money from the bank.
Just had a very nice conversation with AitchD, thanked him for all his support and his participation in the comments throughout the years.
I really like this calling business.
I was really surprised (awestruck might not be too strong a term) by Jane’s call and therefore a little tongue-tied.
Before I discovered blogs like FDL I felt very isolated as a leftist here in OK. I guess I did manage to say that FDL allows me to feel a part of a great community.
one more thing – you have your hands full right now, but read this when you have a chance – Elk has been on the ground for weeks – excellent piece confirming this has come from the bottom up, from the people to their leaders – no top down bs for y’all – mwaaaah !
Link
Are you Volunteering Norski?? With your writing skills I think you would do a great job of keeping all the P8ups up to date with the Fascist Pukes in WI…
I know about Teachers we have a small private Music school and there is nothing like living with the School Marm to give you a great perspective of what it is all about…
Keep the Faith norski we will prevail… just might take some time…
The Pukes have awoken the Sleeping giant and now they are pissed from coast to coast!!
AGREED!
HEY !
lost amidst all the day’s events – Look at what Emptywheel/bmaz did !
who in the world wouldn’t want to support an effort like this ?!?!
JOIN TODAY !
That was a definite WIN for the Rule of Law… Now we must lock up a whole bunch more of Bush and his cronies…
OK, I joined. First time as a financial supporter of any website. Even though I’m on a big austerity drive until things turn around in my life, this place seems to actually make a difference.
I guess I’ll have to hang around more now, eh?
The calls are a wonderful thing to do, though I know time and energy consuming. Just hope I have been around long enough to get one.
Double ditto
Way to go, 4cdave! Hoping you get a thank-you call like I got. Also hoping there’s nothing to worry about to those studies about cellphone EMR hazards.
I starting following the fraudclosure reporting sometime in 2010 and then started reading the other columns. FDL is my go to site for all news and I tell everyone I meet about the great, honest reporting here so they can see for themselves that there are still those in this country who are not bought and paid for by Wall Street!
I am truly sorry that I cannot become a paid member because I am a 99er and no longer have an income. After paying a small number of essential bills this week, I will no longer have any money left either and am really wondering what everyone in my situation in this country is supposed to do to survive. However, I will continue to read, and make the occasional comment, for as long as possible.
g’morning Jane & Pups (2nd shift worker, it’s morning to me)
I was utterly thrilled to talk to RBG yesterday … so touched that he recognized my name and wanted to talk to ndfg! Great conversation even if i was somewhat preoccupied by being at work. I appreciate the behind-the-curtains folks immensely, and felt honored to talk to one of ‘em.
Jane’s introduction of us Pups to facebook several years ago was a stroke of genius, a way for us Pups to connect individually and something that has benefited me far past this community.
So glad to be able to give my subscription money to FDL … i gave up dead-tree news subscriptions in disgust a number of years ago and FDL is where i turn to find out news and informed commentary.
Hope some of the Pups will be at Netroots this summer in lovely Minneapolis, i’d love a chance to meet more of the Pups.
If your federal government actually represented YOU, they would...

End the foreclosure crisis by giving bankruptcy judges the power to order reductions in mortgage principal owed

Reform Social Security – raise the ceiling on income subject to the Social Security tax to $180,000 to restore solvency
Reform Wall St. – break up the big banks and strengthen the Volker Rule
Reform Federal Elections – enact the Fair Elections Now Act. Strictly voluntary. Matching funds. $100.00 maximum donation
I had a great 25-minute chat with RBG yesterday. We “knew” each other because I forward him tech glitches occasionally. He said Ryan and the tech crew are trying to figure out how I can share a membership sponsorship with Kelly.
This has been great fun. I too would like to see a daily membership count. (RBG said when you get over 500 you may start that…)
IANAL, but am trying to figure out how bmaz and Marcy have “standing” to file a
briefsentencing recommendation in that case. I would love someone to explain (not justify, only to enlighten) that to me.Ah-I missed your post Jane but glad to become a member anyway! You guys are fantastic.
The PEN has a new vidieo out:
Sneak Peak At The Last War Crime, The New Feature Film About Indicting Cheney For Torture: The Water Boarding Scene
Calling you now, so you’ll know it’s me.
Wow. The last thing in the world I could imagine would be Jane Hamsher chatting with me. And then I get mentioned in a Hamsher Post.
I did say “I love you Jane but not in a creepy way.” The reason is Jane is a national hero and real patriot. She has fought and mobilized against some of the most evil men the world has ever seen. She has fought against the most corrupt wars in modern history. She has fought the fraud and the lies of that warmongering corporate empire.
But I think Jane’s greatest contribution is inspiring others to fight for peace, justice and freedom.
For all the meticulous planning and very hard work that went into the launch of the FDL Membership program, it is a tremendous testimony to the community at large that, almost immediately, a new process for Membership Scholarships needed to be accommodated. The organic development of this idea, that folks would sponsor Memberships for those who cannot participate at this time, due to circumstances we all understand too well, showed me that nothing can stop us.
The trolls — paid for by Big Big — can come around and try to derail this thing all they want. The core of this community, its caring and helpful nature, will not be thwarted.
Thanks to everyone who’s joined.
Thanks, cypresstree! I’ll look for you in the system and if I see your # I’ll call.
She’s the best news & opinion writer in the language, which tends to be overlooked because her writing is always secondary to her content. I’d say she’s also the best commentator on TV, but I don’t watch any and only view the clips here.
We will try to connect you with someone who has volunteered to donate a membership.
I have seen you post this on other threads, and normally that would annoy me, but in this case it needs to be said again and again.
Bravo!
Wow! I talked to an actual celebrity! Thanks for the call, Jane, keep up the good work.
The trolls-for-hire have been great theater, plus they get to report back nothing but their failure.
I’ll be happy to donate a membership for her. Ryan has my email but he needs her info.
(see NMVoiceofreason’s comment here)
Thanks Jane! Proud to be a donor to an actual 4th estate.
a recent major business setback has me on the financial ropes, otherwise I’d already have chipped in.
:~(
Jane:
Due to my aversion to “automatic renewal” for anything, whether it is magazines, groups, etc., would it be possible to instead send a check for membership? I read the privacy policy and recognize that there may be an “opt-out” for automatic renewal, but I still prefer making the choice each year. FDL is a great site and I want to contribute to its continuation. Thanks.
Please
Thanks for your continued support!
It was such a pleasant surprise to get a personal phone call from Jane! I’m getting very excited by this new concept, and think I’ll up my basic membership pledge to the next level. Looking forward to helping this snowball keep rolling!
i just walked my check over to the mailbox. i didn’t pay by credit card because of the automatic yearly renewal. i prefer not to do that for anything.
i’m very excited about getting a call! and i’m very happy to support fdl. fdl and democracynow are where i get my news. thank you so much for being here. it’s really wonderful to get the news and be part of a community of like-minded folks.
I joined the membership drive last night, but then I couldn’t figure out (until just now) how to donate more money to help sponsor others.
I sent an unrestricted gift tonight through the FDL donation site. Hope that was right. Someone update us if there was a better way to do this.
Thanks, FDL, for all you do!
I will be sending a check out tomorrow and it is money well spent..glad to join the fight and I am working some of my frends to join as well! Hey I am just an old hippie :)
