Laissez les bon temps roules – Happy Mardi Gras! What’s on your mind?

aloha tut — let the good times roll — how’s paradise tonight dood?
glad ya liked it nahant — i like his take on the old tune and that backing band — wow!!!
Some sun actually peaked out from behind the clouds today…!
It’s was a welcome sight indeed…! ;-)
have been out of the loop, guess i’ll have to do some catching up. what’s the firebagger thing?
Really and Tommy boy usually turns me off.. Way too much bubble gum in his old days…
weather dood see’s nothing but rain in our forecast for the next 16 days or so — welcome to la nina march in oregon :)
i think it was a term used to deride firedoglakers that several pups have taken as their own.
like van morrison, he’s got a way with the blues that a lotta folks are not exposed to.
argh, fdl says i joined on the 9th. east-coast bias?
hmmm
van
must be :( still a founding member tho spur
got Wet?? But hey it is just “Oregon” sunshine….
liquid sunshine — don’t bother me – i learned a long time ago, contrary to what ex#2 said, i don’t melt when wet
Dam time zones….. Get ya every time…
How ya doing Spur?? your partner doing OK?
Hey no pup has ever called you a witch did they?? so no melting allowed!!
hi nahant. so far so good, thanks for asking.
mmm Yallooo!
Hi Suz!
But of course Spur… That is what the Lake is all about! Caring about other pups and their others…
naw — folks around here are real nice
i got called the b word so much when i was working patrol that i responded to it almost as if one had said my name…
yalloo kelly! how’s denver tonight?
No wonder why the Oregonians named themselves the Ducks and Beavers, eh…? ;-)
We’re good. Was a day here. :)
thanks, nahant ((( )))
crawling off to bed, nite all
here at the lake or in denver?
Aloha, Spur…!
g’nite spur
Hey all. Garlic sprouts are up and spring is coming!
hey openhope — a sure sign! how’s the sound tonight?
Fucking gorgeous! A day that’s worth all the other ones.
woohoo! the sunshine around here (when we have it) makes it all worthwhile
Gtreat we are already eating “snow” peas from the garden…planted more last week and will be putting beans this week… we just love the fruits of our garden… can’t wait for the maters…mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Garlic! That’s what I gotta grow, I go through so much of it.
Vampires have been real bad in Ohio…oh wait, that’s Republicans, never can tell the fuckers apart…
I’m thinking the weatherman doesn’t have a real grasp on day-by-day. MHO.
I’m planting lettuce seeds tomorrow, knowing I may be out 50 cents in seeds if the Weatherman’s right. Radish, also.
hey margot — hahahaha — how ya doing tonight?
he wasn’t implying that it would be 24/7 just that he saw rain in the forecast each day. it could just be bands of showers
i love snow peas
Whoa, you have snow peas, right now? I’m just figuring out the first planting.
Truly!! There can’t be any difference!! They both want to suck the life out of ya!!
tell me about it — ex #2 is an r *and* a fundy…
yep
I planted in December hoping the frost wouldn’t get them… it didn’t thank doG! And boy are they sweet!!
no wonder he is EX! You had to be blinded by “Love”…
or maybe Lust??
I think I’m doing OK, thanks Suz. It’s a great song you chose, I love Tom Jones.
still trying to figure out what the hell i was thinking….
glad ya like it margot — there’s a van i linked to upthread i think you will like too
“evenin’, all-
A great day. Thousands of people in the streets in FL. It felt good. Huge turnout in Tampa; Stephen King showed up and spoke at the rally in Sarasota.
USUncut crashes BoA
Edward Teller, (the physicist-not the blogger) once compared nuclear fission to spontaneous combustion, where a lot of tiny point-sources cause the whole heap to burst into flame. I couldn’t help but think of that, watching the news today, and going to the Tampa demonstration.
Liked the TJ Featured Vid, but that’s one of Van I’ve not seen . . . stellar.
Never seen him live in his own show, saw him after midnight on stage one New YEar’s Eve at Cow Palace I think, with Marshall Tucker, Alman Brothers, Daniels Band.
After the midnight stuff died down, Greg Alman disappeared, so did a few others but it seemed like every SF Musician and his cuzzin came out on stage, and Van was wailin sax till 3am. Boz Scaggs, Jerry, others . . . BIshop showed up I thin, . . ’72 or ’73 or so?
It all started with Mountain Jam, of course . . . *G*
Suz you weren’t thinking at all… Hormones got the best of ya… not uncommon.. we are all guilty of it..
hey rond — sounds like a great day in the great swamp! wisconsin has set a lotta little ‘fires’
hey larue — glad ya liked them — how’s sac tonight?
evening, Suzzzz
67F today maybe 70F tomorrow . . . all the wet is north your way . . . lo 60′s after tomorrow. Guess I need to plant beans fast . . . Nahant got the drop on ALL of us!
hey ppd — how was your day?
Yeah, the band of showers is something modern tech can’t figure out real well. I just assume it’s going to be another shitty, cloudy, rainy, cold day. Then I get pleasantly surprised 3 times this week. Even if it’s only 4 hours of gorgeous sunshine. Today was a full day of sun.
So I pulled out last years seeds and seed catalog.
*sigh* snow peas
but then, you still got ‘maters…
i got my territorial seed catalog in the mail last week….
Grow garlic and eat well. The Others will always be there. :]
Hi Suz and pups. Thanks, Suzanne, for hooking me up with the archives earlier. What a trip down memory lane!
And, hey, everybody join up…….and call Ryan for sponsorship if needed. What a fiine family we have here.
but but we do live in the city that has been voted the best weather by government test!! Oh the onions are doing great also… still can’t wait for the Sun Gold matters… mmmm talk about TOMATO flavor… and sweet hoy boy!!
How goes it Larue?? Hope the little lady is doing great also ☺ ☺
Man, I’m 10 weeks away from planting beans. Maybe I can put in potatoes in 2 weeks.
Watching House of Flying Daggers — bamboo forest scene — amazing.
hiya nahant
hey dearie — how ya doing tonight? sure did bring back some long ago memories…
It was. I quit going to demonstrations some time back, because I seemed to be something of a tear-gas magnet. Got gassed at anti-apartheid, anti-US policy in central America, and pro-legalization rallies, and trust me, I did absolutely nothing to warrant or provoke it-ever. Since then, I have mostly been an organizer or campaign foot soldier. So it was with some trepidation that I went today, but it felt really good, seeing so many out. And for me, I felt like I broke a hex. I managed to go out and raise my voice without getting gassed. The worm may have really turned at last.
double yay! you gonna diary what ya heard and saw?
Hey, I have a tech question that might be better left alone.?
The Notification section on the top of FDL’s banner is a “friend” thing. Right?
Not for people who don’t do Facebook or actually know the wonders their computers are capable of? Right?
It’s starting to freak me out.
But I dig in dirt for fun.
hey ppdcus hows Salinas these days?? Hope you were able to join the “Club” today ya gotta be in at the ground floor ya know!! The other comp they should offer is monogrammed towels for the swimmers here at the Lake! Specially when that crazy diver shows up and gets us all WET..
SUZ!!!
I plan on it:) A day without garlic…well, I’m either not on the planet or maybe in the hospital.
yup — its a notice that someone has sent ya a friend request or that someone accepted your friendship request
Thank you so much, RonD, for standing up and being present.
been too cold to dive lately dood still in the 30′s at night but at least i’m not dipping below freezing anymore
Thanks. I’ve been an activist for a long time, and we are at a remarkable moment of possibility here, IMO.
Is the hospital a thing to think about?
I don’t want to be prying, but, I’m thinking about your comments and concerned you’re going thru shit.. peace, strength
Moment of possibility indeed! I hope we can make something of it.
I’m also glad you managed to get rid of the giant teargas target on your back, that sounds highly frustrating to have suffered that sort of thing more than once.
Maybe. I hate being medium well-read in history sometimes. It makes life hard.
you must be making good use of that Yodel stove..yes?.. I know we are keeping the wood burner going 24/7…
hey chareronea — how ya doing tonight? am sorry i missed your delurking the other nite
I’m good Suzanne, how are you? And don’t worry, my delurking wasn’t too exciting, but thank you.
the jotul is keeping me cozy and does great at chasing the damp away. i’m not having to get the coals going immediately after waking anymore — today i didn’t start the fire until around 4ish…
i’m just fine :) gotta full cup of coffee, token snoring (it sounds like drip drip) in his bed at my feet, and bailey cat is curled up on the bed next to the wood stove.
what part of earth do ya call home?
If a truly dynamic, grassroots populism can arise out of this groundswell, truly good things could happen.
No no, I just remember being there a few years ago for a broken bone repair and how awful the food was! Not to worry. Just meant I eat a lotta garlic:)
Doin well, both of us! Thanks hoss . . .
WE still have one yellow mini pear plant and one Sun Gold Cherry plant flowering and fruiting . . . *G*
I also have a chili serrano that’s been putting out peppers all winter long . . . this plant is a monster producer . . . insane, I can’t give them away there’s so many . . .
was that when you broke your foot?
Throwing this out there, if you’re interested fire away!
What do you folks look for in a diary post? Should there be an introductory post? Or some sort of marginally directional statement on what one might end up writing in their diary on here?
dang I never could spell… jotul not yodel… sheesh blew it again…
you spelled it like it sounds….
wheww, we eat a lot of garlic as a health/food thing.
I’m a bit jumpy these days,…:]
Yeah, next weekend we’ll buy potting soil, fill some 50 pots of varying sizes, put in two ‘mater plants (not sure which one’s) in our small 2 x 12 foot plot (has one rosemary bush a year old and a new sage bush this winter).
Gotta start basil seeds in shallow carton tops . . . n of course, honey wants wildflowers and such interspersed amongst it all . . .
I got some cuke seeds (roundish lemon cukes) I want to see if they will start in a shallow dig out front. Apartment living means we don’t have a lot of room . . . ergo the pots.
If I get enough basil grown and frozen and pesto made regularly I’m happy!
*G*
Coffee? That would be my favorite vice of late, I try to avoid abusing caffeine this late to at least get some sleep. Sounds pretty cozy to me, cats seem to always find that warmest place and immediately monopolize it.
I hail from the foothills of western New York for now, but I’ve been around far too much in the past. Its a nice corner of the earth, if you don’t mind the snow, and the cold. But you do get all four seasons quite nicely.
i eat a lotta garlic too. besides being good for ya, i think if ya eat a lotta garlic ya don’t get as many bug bites in the summertime. i tend to be a flavor of the month
nothing wrong with eating boatloads of garlic! Does impressive things for the body, I always forget to try and fit it in more.
Fully agreed . . . more ‘mo than I’ve seen in decades . . .
Hey just go for it.. It will be read by the pups..
here’s the about us/faq’s for the diaries. i look for a good headline, clear opening statements. an introductory diary isn’t required but there is nothing wrong with saying in your diary that it is your first.
No intro really necessary, IMO-it is the ideas expressed that matter. Beyond certain authors, what I personally look for is a title that clearly says what the diary is about, and gives me reason to anticipate a novel or unique viewpoint. There are diaries on all kinds of stuff, from cosmology and cultural history to revolutionary politics, book reviews, and personal expositions. Whatever you feel strongly, we’d like to read.
FUCK i did it again
Don’t forget to try the Thai basil… makes the best pesto evah!!
this is my first experience living on the oregon coast — been here 3 years — and my first time living where one gets all four seasons. i like it and the eye candy scenery is just gaga
Ankle, but yeah, that was it. Man I have cords taped down like anything now.
dammit, and i hit the wrong reply button too… can ya’ll tell its my forking monday
Yes you did. I was sitting here laughing my ass off.
(((Suzanne)))
I’m planning on it, was kinda just curious. I’m not sure anyone really wants to read 8 pages worth of rant or something like that, but we’ll see!
the good old thumper days :) dang, that seems like it was so long ago
You are in such a different growing climate than me! I’m officially giving up, throwing in the towel on growing fucking tomatoes. I can grow tomatillos. I can baby the shit out of basil and get a crop. Heat loving veggies will break a Nor’westerner’s heart. It’s hard to give it up.
grrrrr
when ya do, be sure to drop a link in the late late night thread just in case i miss it
Yeah, I’m big on garlic, thyme and cayenne as blood cleaners. Also, tasty.
thanks for the FAQ link, I’ll try not to break all of the rules at once ;)
Good titles seem to be the rule then, that makes sense, and thanks for that those who have pointed that out.
I like the Genovese basil for pesto, but I ALWAYS have some purple Thai basil plants. GREAT for salads . . . or anything. N GARLIC! Garlic in everything! Haven’t grown garlic yet, I should try as much as I use it . . . what’s killin my pocket book and food prep is the phreakin HUGE rise in veggies . . . . red onions at $1.79 lb, zukes and such at 2.00 lb, ‘maters $2.00 lb or more . . . lettuce n greens are insane . . . a head of ICEberg is over $2, same with romaine . . . buying more canned goods and dried beans now . . . produce is insane.
Ahh, as a kid I lived up in Tacoma, it was interesting out there, I loved the weather. The scenery is probably even more gorgeous where you are, that must be really nice.
Tweety, on replay, is talking about how Jim Demented is pushing a national right-to-work law. To a degree, it WILL split working people, but what I’m seeing right now makes me think that might really be the match that the fuse demands. Therefore, I’m almost hoping Dement, and the Republicans in general, try to go for it.
What do you guys think?
Your part of OR is that sun deficient it hampers ‘maters? And such?
the titles are the hook that draws the reader in…. that and subject matter. write enough diaries and you can have folks looking for your name in the diaries list
Frustrating =(
Nothing like noticing just how much you’re being stolen from to actually have produce that’s good for you.
forking cost of everything is going up…. esp food and gas *spitting*
i was in california from 63 to 08 — mainly in the san francisco bay area. i forking love it up here
What would such a national law MEAN to employees and employers?
I know CA is ‘at will’ meaning you can get fired for anything or nothing . . . and not get unemployment depending on how the employer tries to rig the termination sitch.
Thanks for the advice as well. As for a specific topic(s), I’ve got interests and some knowledge all over the board. It’s probably one of the reasons I like this place. I tend to really get riled up over statecraft, foreign policy fail, and totally misrepresentations of past history. So I’ll probably be drifting off to somewhere out there.
folks are starting to wake up to the idea that the r’s are going after workers and worker rights.
didja see rachel maddow tonight? she spent the first 20 minutes documenting the its not the budget shit the r’s have been doing and then went right into an interview with naomi klein and started talking about shock doctrine. amazing
and none of that food is part of the CPI!! Fuck dam St Ronnie that and making SS taxable.. what a prick he was/is!!
Goodnight,all.
Hopefully I’m planting lettuce tomorrow, if the weather forecast for crap doesn’t turn out bad.
We can only hope. And not plant too many seeds at one time, in case that tanned, weird hair asshole is actually right about the weather.
Peace, laughter, strength
¥ep . . . and this past year we have changed our food intake considerably to more produce/veggies and less meat based proteins . . . you can get full on a ton of produce with few calories, and the impact on the body/immune system, etc. is really good for us.
The time to plant as much as you can is now, we all probably know how much its going to get worse before it gets better. It would be really nice to get some subsidy reform, or research done. Someone was arguing in the time oped the other day about that, trying to refocus funds on actually getting people to buy somewhat more local food to try and save on the transportation(oil) costs.
But hey, that’s not what will make money for the folks up top right?
g’nite openhope
That’s a huge development! I’m stealing PDDCUS’ line now … G’evening Fire Gods. Congrats on the launch of the new program Suz et al.
Northern Puget Sound. Oregon is like traveling to southern locals. We’re close to Canada.
Yes, I did. Remarkable.
Yep . . .$3.81 here for cheap stuff . . . but the food . . . once a week for $100 gets me half today what I got a year ago . . . trying to avoid pastas, and bulk carbs that are less expensive . . . but it’s all up . . . have to hit 3 different stores and prowl aisles for hidden gems . . . sometimes the paper ads show good deals but most of it is come on shit now.
LeSigh.
Eh? Portland(ia), OR has a healthy heaping of Canadians as well. I’ve always been fond of the Maple Leaves.
You just come sit right over here by me…
mother’s day weekend is our traditional safe to plant date. but yeah, we should all be planting, even if it is in pots on a deck or patio or balcony.
hey mzchief — how’s your side of the coast range?
I’m very tempted to borrow some of the land on my Dad’s property to try and defray a little bit of what I will be eating this summer, unfortunately I’m not sure if I will be able to keep in the area so we’ll see. It’s completely worth it to remove animal protein, I’m really attempting to try to almost eliminate it, although that is somewhat through abuse of whey and egg whites.
That’s some of the most beautiful country in the whole world . . . wow.
My sis n hers are in Bellingham, WA . . . they know border travel! lol
All’s a bit more calm today. Sunshine in PDX and folks stir although its still officially winter here. Two gorgeous cats decided out of the blue to come visit me. I gave them each a bit of chicken so we are fast friends now.
How are you, Suz?
P.S. Re basil … I’ve been able to grow it indoors under a full spectrum grow bulb then transfer and propagate the plants outdoors when the weather turns right. I think you could do the same thing with tomatoes. I like the fast-ripening varieties as Early Girls. Even under the best conditions, the Beef Steaks don’t ripen until football season starts again.
blahh, I’m glad you ignored my typo…. or didn’t. I will probably take a peek at your diary when I get a chance then.
I’ll look forward to seeing your diaries.:)
awwww…. the air still has a bite to it here but my daffs are starting to bloom
everyone in the pool, then nahant!
¥ep, less cheese, eggs, meats, more fowl (can’t afford fish other n canned tuna and Tilipia), much less breads and ONLY whole grain artisan breads but it’s hella expensive.
It’s almost been fun trying to save money and eat better . . . till the prices doubled.
Well pups time to head off… night all.. And don’t put off planting a veggie garden.. always gives ya back with good fresh veggies…
I’ll have to get on writing a few then!
There are grammar Nazis on FDL, but I’m not one of them. I’ve been here since 2006, but I’ve only written one diary, about the role of warfare in evolving civilizations. I look forward to yours-
g’nite nahant
Well, gotta run Pups . . . tahnks for two GREAT vids Suz, thanks to all for the tunage and chattage . . . stay warm, dry, safe and hug ‘em close.
Oh, Happy International Women’s Day, Happy Fat Tuesday and congrats FDL on the new fund raising efforts . . . what a ton of response I read during the course of the day, so kewl.
*G*
Niters now . . . zzzzz
Yeah, I completely hear that. I usually got for the cheapest breads I can find without HFCS, and attempt to keep myself as cheap as possible. Lettuce tends to really become your friend.
The crocuses have been out for weeks now.
Please do. I’ll guaranteed you’ll get comments. :-)
Someone mention Garlic?
g’nite larue
I’m guilty of multiple tabbing when surfing usually, so its a bit easy to start a sentence and then change the wording without editing correctly. Or at least it’s easy for me to do that. When I’m starting at one document this tends not to happen, and I usually double check for it.
I’ve started reading some of your post, I’m interested.
hey nonq — how ya doing tonight?
You’ve almost inspired me to think about sleep so I can fit in a bunch of reading on Libya. I’d like to thought experiment out varying levels of intervention there currently, or lack thereof.
Hey chaeronea. I just wrote a long reply to this question but my battery died. :-(
So I’ll just say go at it and let us know when it is up. I usually drop a few folks a note when I write one.
You might check out the view point at Avaaz.Org regarding that as part of your research. They are asking for the UN to intervene and implement a no-fly zone. Sweet dreams! I think I’ll mosey myself shortly …
hey spocko — oh noz! how was your day?
Fading fast, now.
It’s spring in the Swamp, whatever the calendar says. The world is covered with pollen, and there has been a crazy explosion of local fauna. You can open your car door, and hear mockingbirds mocking the sound of your ignition alarm. The Spanish moss hanging from the trees has doubled almost overnight, the crickets and frogs are back in force-a buzzing, dissonant symphony in the dark, occasionally punctuated by the sounds of far off dogs, bobcats, and gators. Possums and raccoons will be tearing up the trash soon…Way up on the highway, I can hear a werewolf on a motorcycle, way up in the revs…the mechanical shriek fades, and the Swamp goes back to its own concerns.
Goodnight, all. The best of all possible tomorrows to you all.
Vielen Dank!
sorry about your battery, perhaps wait and see what I throw out there, then critique away?
Worked a bit on some CAD revisions and commented here on Wanker’s Gawd fixation over at ddayen’s great coverage today, wrote about 6 emails to State Republican Senators and Assembly persons. Expecting 6 to 12 inches of snow next 18 hours. Must have worked hard enough to fall asleep in the chair, tea and back to my bed soon.
g’nite rond
My pleasure!
a busy busy day! and *brrrrr*
Goodnight RonD
And to Margot, if you still around and I think you said Ohio, garlic gets planted in the fall, overwinters under the snow, one of the first sprouts of spring. I’m north of you and the ground is still frozen, I am envious of the people with an extra couple months of growing season.
I’ll say goodnight/good morning in advance here, trying to be polite. Reloads are slooowww, today.
G’nite folks and rest well. Mañana!
Goodnight all!
’bout time for me to turn back into a pumpkin myself. thanks for letting me hang out with ya tonight.
g’nite all
I’ll be sure to check it out.
Today I picked up 22 avocados off the ground. They’d been blown off our tree in a recent storm.
Good thing I have a lemon tree as well.
CT, c’mon over. Bring chips & beer.
Hi Susie,
Skip the GMOs
You can thank me in the morning.
I am late to the party.

This station has a Traditional Jazz program weekdays from 10 AM until noon ET. There are many other shows which might be of interest, e.g., Irish music, Cuban music, Cajun music, etc. See the program guide at this site.

Sidney Bechet
I believe the woman in the video is film actress Louise Brooks.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000315/
“Pandora’s Box” (silent) is good.
Bobby Blue Bland does the definitive version of St James Infirmary IMO.
Allen Toussaint, St. James Infirmary
The initial reason I posted was I thought Louis Armstrong had the best version of St. James Infirmary I have heard. I heard it on WWOZ 1 morning about 15 years ago. I stumbled around youtube for a while, but couldn’t find a version of his that sounded nearly as spectacular as I remembered.
“Diary of a Lost Girl” (silent) with Louise Brooks is also good. She was born in 1906 and so made both of these films before she was 24 years old. Her haircut was all the rage, I believe.
